Abstract:This is an introduction to the algebras $A\subset B(H)$ that the linear operators $T:H\to H$ can form, once a complex Hilbert space $H$ is given. Motivated by quantum mechanics, we are mainly interested in the von Neumann algebras, which are stable under taking adjoints, $T\to T^*$, and are weakly closed. When the algebra has a trace $tr:A\to\mathbb C$, we can think of it as being of the form $A=L^\infty(X)$, with $X$ being a quantum measured space. Of particular interest is the free case, where the center of the algebra reduces to the scalars, $Z(A)=\mathbb C$. Following von Neumann, Connes, Jones, Voiculescu and others, we discuss the basic properties of such algebras $A$, and how to do algebra, geometry, analysis and probability on the underlying quantum spaces $X$.

Abstract:We apply to operator algebra theory a monotone selection principle which apparently escaped attention (of operator algebra theorists) so far. This principle relates to the basic order theoretic characterisation of von Neumann algebras given by Kadison, and the simplified form this result takes in separable Hilbert spaces. In the separable case we need only consider increasing sequences rather than increasing nets. We apply an argument of Klaus Floret to show that, within the realm of commutativity, there exists a general monotone selection principle providing for this simplification. Thereby we obtain a valuable shortcut and a handy tool for related purposes. Actually, a more general selection principle is proved within the framework of vector lattices.

Abstract:Motivated by the sharp contrast between classical and quantum physics as probability theories, in these lecture notes I introduce the basic notions of operator algebras that are relevant for the algebraic approach to quantum physics. Aspects of the representation theory of C*-algebras will be motivated and illustrated in physical terms. Particular emphasis will be given to explicit examples from the theory of quantum phase transitions, where concepts coming from strands as diverse as quantum information theory, algebraic quantum physics and statistical mechanics agreeably converge, providing a more complete picture of the physical phenomena involved.

Abstract:Given two unital C*-algebras $A$ and $B$, we study, when it exists, the universal unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ generated by the coefficients of a unital $*$-homomorphism $\rho\,:\, A\rightarrow B\otimes\mathcal{U}(A,B)$. When $B$ is finite dimensional, it is well known that $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ exists and we study in this case properties LP, RFD, primitiveness and the UCT as well as $K$-theory. We also construct a reduced version of $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ for which we study exactness, nuclearity, simplicity, absence of non-trivial projection and $K$-theory. Then, we consider the von Neumann algebra generated by the reduced version and study factoriality, amenability, fullness, primeness, absence of Cartan, Connes' invariants, Haagerup property and Connes' embeddability. Next, we consider the case when $B$ is infinite dimensional: we show that for any non-trivial separable unital $C^*$-algebra $A$, $\mathcal{U}(A,B)$ exists if and only if $B$ is finite dimensional. Nevertheless, we show that there exists a unique unital locally $C^*$-algebra generated by the coefficients of a unital continuous $*$-homomorphism $\rho\,:\, A\rightarrow B\otimes\mathcal{U}(A,B)$. Finally, we study a natural quantum semigroup structure on $\mathcal{U}(A,A)$.

Abstract:We study $p$-adic operator algebras, which are nonarchimedean analogues of $C^*$-algebras. We demonstrate that various classical examples of operator algebras - such as group(oid) algebras - have a nonarchimedean counterpart. The category of $p$-adic operator algebras exhibits a similar flavor to the category of real and complex $C^*$-algebras, featuring limits, colimits, tensor products, crossed products and an enveloping construction permitting us to construct $p$-adic operator algebras from involutive algebras over $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$. Finally, we briefly discuss an analogue of topological $K$-theory for Banach $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-algebras, and compute it in basic examples, like Cuntz algebras and rotation algebras.

The main goal of the paper is to find large classes of noncommutative domains in B(H) with prescribed universal operator models, acting on the full Fock space with n generators, and to study these domains and their universal models in connection with the Hardy algebras and the C^*-algebras they generate.

Abstract:The article associates two fundamental lattice constructions with each regular unital real ordered Banach space (function system). These are used to establish certain results in the theory of operator algebras, specifically relating the injective envelope of a separable C*-algebra with its enveloping von Neumann algebra in a given faithful separable representation. The last section investigates on lattices of projections arising in injective C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras and certain nonlinear maps sending projections to projections which are essentially determined by their values on positive projections.

Abstract:An operator algebra $\mathcal{A}$ acting on a Hilbert space is said to have the closability property if every densely defined linear transformation commuting with $\mathcal{A}$ is closable. In this paper we study the closability property of the von Neumann algebra consisting of the multiplication operators on $L^2(\mu)$, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for a normal operator $N$ such that the von Neumann algebra generated by $N$ has the closability property. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for an operator $T$ of class $C_0$ such that the algebra generated by $T$ in the weak operator topology and the algebra $H^\infty(T)=\{u(T):u\in H^\infty\}$ have the closability property.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to exploit the structure of strongly continuous operator semigroups in order to formulate a categorical framework in which a fresh perspective can be applied to past operator theoretic results. In particular, we investigate the inverse-producing Arens extension for Banach algebras (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 88:536-548, 1958) adapted for operators and operator semigroups by Batty and Geyer (J. Operator Theory 78(2):473-500, 2017) in this new framework, asking and answering questions using categorical language. We demonstrate that the Arens extension defines an extension functor in this setting and that it forms an adjunction with the suitably defined forgetful functor. As a by-product of this categorical framework, we also revisit the work on Banach direct sums by Lachowicz and Moszyński (Semigroup Forum 93(1):34-70, 2016). This paper can be considered as a brief exploration of the triple interface between operator semigroups, Banach algebras, and category theory.

On $C^*$-algebras associated to transfer operators for countable-to-one maps

Abstract:Our initial data is a transfer operator $L$ for a continuous, countable-to-one map $\varphi:\Delta \to X$ defined on an open subset of a locally compact Hausdorff space $X$. Then $L$ may be identified with a `potential', i.e. a map $\varrho:\Delta\to X$ that need not be continuous unless $\varphi$ is a local homeomorphism. We define the crossed product $C_0(X)\rtimes L$ as a universal $C^*$-algebra with explicit generators and relations, and give an explicit faithful representation of $C_0(X)\rtimes L$ under which it is generated by weighted composition operators. We explain its relationship with Exel-Royer's crossed products, quiver $C^*$-algebras of Muhly and Tomforde, $C^*$-algebras associated to complex or self-similar dynamics by Kajiwara and Watatani, and groupoid $C^*$-algebras associated to Deaconu-Renault groupoids. We describe spectra of core subalgebras of $C_0(X)\rtimes L$ and use it to characterise simplicity of $C_0(X)\rtimes L$ and prove the uniqueness theorem for $C_0(X)\rtimes L$. We give efficient criteria for $C_0(X)\rtimes L$ to be a Kirchberg algebra, and we discuss relationship between KMS states on the core subalgebra of $C_0(X)\rtimes L$ and conformal measures for $\varphi$.

Abstract:We study the relationship between operator algebras, $C^*$ and von Neumann, acting on a Hilbert space and unitary representations of topological groups on the same space. We obtain certain correspondences between both these families of objects. In particular, we prove that the study of Abelian subalgebras of a norm-separable $C^*$-algebra can be, in many aspects, reduced to the study of unitary representations of Polish groups. It is shown that our techniques have applications to the construction and classification of Abelian subalgebras of operator $C^*$-algebras on separable Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:Differential operators acting on functions defined on graphs by different studies do not form a consistent framework for the analysis of real or complex functions in the sense that they do not satisfy the Leibniz rule of any order. In this paper we propose a new family of operators that satisfy the Leibniz rule, and as special cases, produce the specific operators defined in the literature, such as the graph difference and the graph Laplacian. We propose a framework to define the order of a differential operator consistently using the Leibniz rule in Lie algebraic setting. Furthermore by identifying the space of functions defined on graph edges with the tensor product of node functions we construct a Lie bialgebra of graph functions and reinterpret the difference operator as a co-bracket. As an application, some explicit solutions of Schrödinger and Fokker-Planck equations are given.

Abstract classification theorems for amenable C*-algebras

Abstract:In the 1970s Alain Connes identified the appropriate notion of amenabilty for von Neumann algebras, and used it to obtain a deep internal finite dimensional approximation structure for these algebras. This structure is exactly what is needed for classification, and one of many consequences of Connes' theorem is the uniqueness of amenable II$_1$ factors, and later a complete classification of all simple amenable von Neumann algebras acting on separable Hilbert spaces. The Elliott classification programme aims for comparable structure and classification results for $C^*$-algebras using operator $K$-theory and traces. The definitive unital classification theorem was obtained in 2015. This is a combination of the Kirchberg--Phillips theorem and the large scale activity in the stably finite case by numerous researchers over the previous 15--20 years. It classifies unital simple separable amenable $C^*$-algebras satisfying two extra hypotheses: a universal coefficient theorem which computes $KK$-theory in terms of $K$-theory and a regularity hypothesis excluding exotic high dimensional behaviour. Today the regularity hypothesis can be described in terms of tensor products (Jiang-Su stability). These hypotheses are abstract, and there are deep tools for verifying the universal coefficient theorem and Jiang-Su stability in examples. This article describes the unital classification theorem, its history and context, together with the new abstract approach to this result developed in collaboration with Carrión, Gabe, Schafhauser and Tikuisis. This method makes a direct connection to the von Neumann algebraic results, and does not need to obtain any kind of approximation structure inside $C^*$-algebras en route to classification. A companion survey will focus on the role of the Jiang-Su stability hypothesis, and the associated work on "regularity."
