Abstract:This article reviews some recent progress in our understanding of the structure of rational conformal field theories, based on ideas that originate for a large part in the work of A. Ocneanu. The consistency conditions that generalize modular invariance for a given RCFT in the presence of various types of boundary conditions—open, twisted—are encoded in a system of integer multiplicities that form matrix representations of fusion-like algebras. These multiplicities are also the combinatorial data that enable one to construct an abstract “quantum” algebra, whose 6j-and 3j-symbols contain essential information on the operator product algebra of the RCFT and are part of a cell system, subject to pentagonal identities. It looks quite plausible that the classification of a wide class of RCFT amounts to a classification of “Weak C*- Hopf algebras”.

Abstract:Conformal Quantum Field Theories (CFT) in 1 or 1+1 spacetime dimensions (respectively called chiral and full CFTs) admit several "axiomatic" (mathematically rigorous and model-independent) formulations. In this note, we deal with the von Neumann algebraic formulation due to Haag and Kastler, mainly restricted to the chiral CFT setting. Irrespectively of the chosen formulation, one can ask the questions: given a theory $\mathcal{A}$, how many and which are the possible extensions $\mathcal{B} \supset \mathcal{A}$ or subtheories $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathcal{A}$? How to construct and classify them, and study their properties? Extensions are typically described in the language of algebra objects in the braided tensor category of representations of $\mathcal{A}$, while subtheories require different ideas. In this paper, we review recent structural results on the study of subtheories in the von Neumann algebraic formulation (conformal subnets) of a given chiral CFT (conformal net). Furthermore, building on [BDG23], we provide a "quantum Galois theory" for conformal nets analogous to the one for Vertex Operator Algebras (VOA). We also outline the case of 3+1 dimensional Algebraic Quantum Field Theories (AQFT). The aforementioned results make use of families of (extreme) vacuum state preserving unital completely positive maps acting on the net of von Neumann algebras, hereafter called quantum operations. These are natural generalizations of the ordinary vacuum preserving gauge automorphisms, hence they play the role of "generalized global gauge symmetries". Quantum operations suffice to describe all possible conformal subnets of a given conformal net with the same central charge.

Geometric realization of algebraic conformal field theories

Abstract:We explore new connections between the fields and local observables in two dimensional chiral conformal field theory. We show that in a broad class of examples, the von Neumann algebras of local observables (a conformal net) can be obtained from the fields (a unitary vertex operator algebra) via a continuous geometric interpolation procedure involving Graeme Segal's functorial definition of conformal field theory. In particular, we construct conformal nets from these unitary vertex operator algebras by showing that 'geometrically mollified' versions of the fields yield bounded, local operators on the Hilbert space completion of the vertex algebra. This work is inspired by Henriques' picture of conformal nets arising from degenerate Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:A vertex algebra is an algebraic counterpart of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. By an equivalent characterization of vertex algebra using Lie conformal algebra and left-symmetric algebra given by Bakalov and Kac in [3], in studying vertex algebra, we have to deal with such a question: Do there exist compatible left-symmetric algebra structures on a class of special Lie algebras named formal distribution Lie algebras? In this paper, we study this question. We introduce the definitions of left-symmetric conformal algebra and Novikov conformal algebra. Many examples of these algebras are obtained. As an application, we present a construction of vertex algebra using left-symmetric conformal algebra.

Abstract:Motivated by the sharp contrast between classical and quantum physics as probability theories, in these lecture notes I introduce the basic notions of operator algebras that are relevant for the algebraic approach to quantum physics. Aspects of the representation theory of C*-algebras will be motivated and illustrated in physical terms. Particular emphasis will be given to explicit examples from the theory of quantum phase transitions, where concepts coming from strands as diverse as quantum information theory, algebraic quantum physics and statistical mechanics agreeably converge, providing a more complete picture of the physical phenomena involved.

Abstract:The notions of conformal Lie 2-algebras and conformal omni-Lie algebras are introduced and studied. It is proved that the category of conformal Lie 2-algebras and the category of 2-term conformal $L_{\infty}$-algebras are equivalent. We construct conformal Lie 2-algebras from conformal omni-Lie algebras and Leibniz conformal algebras.

Operator-state correspondence in simple current extended conformal field theories: Toward a general understanding of chiral conformal field theories and topological orders

Abstract:In this work, we revisit the operator-state correspondence in the Majorana conformal field theory (CFT) with emphasis on its semion representation. Whereas the semion representation gives a concise ``abelian" (or invertible) representation in the level of fusion rule and quantum states, there exists subtlety when considering the chiral multipoint correlation function. In this sense, the operator-state correspondence in the semion sector of the fermionic theory inevitably contains difficulty coming from its anomalous conformal dimension $1/16$ as a $Z_{2}$ symmetry operator. By analyzing the asymptotic behaviors of the existing correlation functions, we propose a nontrivial correspondence between the chiral conformal blocks and bulk correlation functions containing both order and disorder fields. One can generalize this understanding to $Z_{N}$ models (in which there exist long-standing open problems). We expect this may improve our understanding of the simple current extension of CFT which can appear commonly in the studies of topologically ordered systems.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is a mathematical construction of a non-perturbative deformation of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. We introduce a notion of a full vertex algebra which formulates a compact two-dimensional conformal field theory. Then, we construct a deformation family of a full vertex algebra which serves as a current-current deformation of conformal field theory in physics. The parameter space of the deformation is expressed as a double coset of an orthogonal group, a quotient of an orthogonal Grassmannian. As an application, we consider a deformation of chiral conformal field theories, vertex operator algebras. A current-current deformation of a "vertex operator algebra" may produce new vertex operator algebras. We give a formula for counting the number of the isomorphic classes of vertex operator algebras obtained in this way. We demonstrate it for some holomorphic vertex operator algebra of central charge $24$.

Abstract:Using the recently developed notion of a fractional Virasoro algebra, we explore the implied operator product expansions in nonlocal conformal field theories and their geometric meaning. We probe the interplay between classical nonlocality in the functional-analytic sense and quantization in a two-dimensional setting and find that nonlocal quantum dynamics realize this fractional Virasoro algebra exclusively with a state dependent central charge. Notably, we prove that the widely studied free Gaussian fixed points with a fractional Laplacian kinetic term does not fit this criterion but that the RG flow associated non-Gaussian fixed points do.

Algebraic structures and Hamiltonians from the equivalence classes of 2D conformal algebras

Abstract:The construction of superintegrable systems based on Lie algebras and their universal enveloping algebras has been widely studied over the past decades. However, most constructions rely on explicit differential operator realisations and Marsden-Weinstein reductions. In this paper, we develop an algebraic approach based on the subalgebras of the 2D conformal algebra $\mathfrak{c}(2)$. This allows us to classify the centralisers of the enveloping algebra of the conformal algebra and construct the corresponding Hamiltonians with integrals in algebraic form. It is found that the symmetry algebras underlying these algebraic Hamiltonians are six-dimensional quadratic algebras. The Berezin brackets and commutation relations of the quadratic algebraic structures are closed without relying on explicit realisations or representations. We also give the Casimir invariants of the symmetry algebras. Our approach provides algebraic perspectives for the recent work by Fordy and Huang on the construction of superintegrable systems in the Darboux spaces.

Conformal Mapping of Non-Lorentzian Geometries in SU(1,2) Conformal Field Theory

Abstract:We realize an explicit conformal mapping between the state and operator pictures in a class of (2+1)-dimensional non-Lorentzian field theories with SU(1,2)$\times$U(1) conformal symmetry. The state picture arises from null reducing four-dimensional relativistic conformal field theories on a three-sphere, yielding a non-Lorentzian geometry with the conformal Killing symmetry group SU(1,2). This is complementary to the operator picture recently studied by Lambert et al., where the geometry acquires an $\Omega$-deformation. We then use the geometric mapping between the two pictures to derive a correspondence between the generators. This provides a concrete realization of the state-operator correspondence in non-Lorentzian conformal field theories.

Abstract:We propose a variational method for identifying lattice operators in a critical quantum spin chain with scaling operators in the underlying conformal field theory (CFT). In particular, this allows us to build a lattice version of the primary operators of the CFT, from which we can numerically estimate the operator product expansion coefficients $C_{\alpha\beta\gamma}^{\textrm{ CFT}}$. We demonstrate the approach with the critical Ising quantum spin chain.

Conformal field theory on $T\bar{T}$-deformed space and correlators from dynamical coordinate transformations

Abstract:We study the map between two descriptions of the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of conformal field theory (CFT): One is the defining description as a deformation of CFT by the $T\bar{T}$-operator. The other is an alternative description as the undeformed CFT on the dynamical $T\bar{T}$-deformed space that backreacts to the state or operator insertions, reminiscent of the theory of gravity. Instead of adopting the topological gravity description, we develop a more literal CFT-based operator formalism that facilitates systematic and straightforward computations of the $T\bar{T}$-deformation of the stress tensor, operators, and their correlators, while rederiving known results in the literature. Along the way, we discuss the backreaction to the $T\bar{T}$-deformed space in response to local operators and exhibit the hard-disk and free-space structures in the UV-cutoff and Hagedorn phases, respectively, suggested by Cardy-Doyon and Jiang. To capitalize on the alternative description of the $T\bar{T}$-deformed CFT, we focus on the correlators of semi-heavy operators, i.e., the operators of large conformal dimension $\Delta\gg\sqrt{c}$, and show an intuitive and simple way to obtain the $T\bar{T}$-deformed correlators from those of the undeformed CFT on the $T\bar{T}$-deformed space via dynamical coordinate transformations. This may have implications in the holographic dual description, pointing towards a working dictionary for a class of matter correlators in the cutoff AdS picture.

Abstract:We study the higher spin algebras of two-dimensional conformal field theory from the perspective of quantum integrability. Starting from Maulik-Okounkov instanton R-matrix and applying the procedure of algebraic Bethe ansatz, we obtain infinite commuting families of Hamiltonians of quantum ILW hierarchy parametrized by the shape of the auxiliary torus. We calculate explicitly the first five of these Hamiltonians. Then, we numerically verify that their joint spectrum can be parametriezed by solutions of Litvinov's Bethe ansatz equations and we conjecture a general formula for the joint spectrum of all ILW Hamiltonians, based on results of Feigin, Jimbo, Miwa and Mukhin.

Abstract:We give an equivalence of categories between: (i) Möbius vertex algebras which are equipped with a choice of generating family of quasiprimary vectors, and (ii) (not-necessarily-unitary) Möbius-covariant Wightman conformal field theories on the unit circle. We do not impose any technical restrictions on the theories considered (such as finite-dimensional conformal weight spaces or simplicity), yielding the most general equivalence between these two axiomatizations of two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory. This provides new opportunities to study non-unitary vertex algebras using the lens of algebraic conformal field theory and operator algebras, which we demonstrate by establishing a non-unitary version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a formal variational calculus of super functions in one real variable and find the conditions for a "matrix differential operator" to be a Hamiltonian superoperator. Abstract:Lie conformal algebras appear in the theory of vertex algebras. Their relation is similar to that of Lie algebras and their universal enveloping algebras. Associative conformal algebras play a role in conformal representation theory. We introduce the notions of conformal identity and unital associative conformal algebras and classify finitely generated simple unital associative conformal algebras of linear growth. These are precisely the complete algebras of conformal endomorphisms of finite modules.
