Abstract:Atomic spin sensors offer precision measurements using compact, microfabricated packages, placing them in a competitive position for both market and research applications. Performance of these sensors such as dynamic range may be enhanced through magnetic field control. In this work, we discuss the design of miniature coils for three-dimensional, localized field control by direct placement around the sensor, as a flexible and compact alternative to global approaches used previously. Coils are designed on biplanar surfaces using a stream-function approach and then fabricated using standard printed-circuit techniques. Application to a laboratory-scale optically pumped magnetometer of sensitivity approximately 20 fT/Hz$^{1/2}$ is shown. We also demonstrate the performance of a coil set measuring $7 \times 17 \times 17$ mm$^3$ that is optimized specifically for magnetoencephalography, where multiple sensors are operated in proximity to one another. Characterization of the field profile using $^{87}$Rb free-induction spectroscopy and other techniques show $>$96% field homogeneity over the target volume of a MEMS vapor cell and a compact stray field contour of approximately 1% at 20 mm from the center of the cell.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to design and fabricate miniature bi - planar coils for atomic magnetometers (especially zero - field magnetometers) in order to achieve precise control of the magnetic field. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following points: 1. **Improve magnetic field uniformity and control precision**: By designing miniature bi - planar coils, a highly uniform magnetic field can be generated within the target area, and the magnetic field strength and direction can be precisely controlled. This is crucial for improving the performance of atomic spin sensors (such as zero - field magnetometers) based on alkali - metal vapors. 2. **Reduce stray magnetic fields**: In multi - sensor applications, especially in applications where multiple sensors need to be closely arranged, such as magnetoencephalography (MEG), reducing the stray magnetic fields between coils can significantly reduce crosstalk between sensors and improve the dynamic range and measurement precision of the system. 3. **Achieve a compact and flexible design**: By using standard printed circuit board (PCB) technology, a compact and easy - to - fabricate bi - planar coil system is designed, making it suitable for laboratory - scale devices as well as future commercial products. 4. **Optimize coil design**: The stream - function approach is used to optimize the current path of the coils, ensuring that the best balance between manufacturability and performance is achieved while meeting the requirements for magnetic field uniformity and stray magnetic fields. Through detailed design processes, optimization methods, and experimental verification, the paper demonstrates the effectiveness and advantages of these miniature bi - planar coils in practical applications.
