Abstract:Here we study the instabilities of a quadratic band crossing system to Chern insulating states and uncorrelated disorder. We determined the phase diagram in the plane of topological mass versus disorder strength, characterizing the system with respect to spectral, localization and topological properties. In the clean limit, the system has two gapped Chern insulating phases with Chern numbers C=\pm2, and a trivial phase with C=0. For finite disorder, the quadratic band crossing points are unstable to emergent gapless Chern insulating phases with C=\pm1, not present in the clean limit. These phases occupy a considerable region of the phase diagram for intermediate disorder and show features of topological Anderson insulators: it is possible to reach them through disorder-driven transitions from trivial phases.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the instability issues of Quadratic Band Crossing (QBC) systems in the phase transition of Topological Anderson Insulators (TAI). ### Research Background and Objectives - **Topological Insulators**: These materials exhibit special quantum effects that are proportional to topological invariants and are very stable against perturbations. - **QBC Systems**: 2D QBC systems have a special band structure where bands intersect quadratically at certain points, which are associated with finite Berry phases. - **Anderson Disorder**: Random disorder introduced in the study to simulate imperfections in real materials. ### Main Research Content - **Topological Properties**: The authors studied the topological properties of QBC systems under different parameters, including changes in the Chern number and topological phase transitions. - **Impact of Disorder**: Examined the effect of disorder strength on QBC systems, particularly its role in forming topological Anderson insulators. - **New Topological Phases**: Discovered new topological phases with gapless states and Chern numbers of ±1, which do not exist in the absence of disorder. - **Instability of QBC Points**: Found that QBC points are unstable for forming the aforementioned new topological phases, even under minimal disorder. - **Topological Anderson Insulators**: By increasing disorder, it is possible to transition from a trivial phase to these new topological phases, indicating that they belong to topological Anderson insulators. ### Main Conclusions - In the presence of disorder, QBC systems can exhibit new topological properties, including the topological Anderson insulator phase. - These new topological phases (Chern numbers ±1) do not appear in the absence of disorder but can be induced by disorder-driven phase transitions. - QBC points are unstable for forming these topological phases, even under minimal disorder conditions. - Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, the authors provided a detailed phase diagram of QBC systems under the influence of disorder, showing the transition path from trivial to topological phases. In summary, this paper reveals the novel topological behavior of QBC systems under disorder conditions and highlights the importance of QBC points in forming specific topological phases. These results are significant for understanding the effects of disorder in topological materials.
