Abstract:The PandaX project consists of a series of xenon-based experiments that are used to search for dark matter (DM) particles and to study the fundamental properties of neutrinos. The next DM experiment PandaX-4T will be using 4 ton liquid xenon in the sensitive volume, which is nearly a factor of seven larger than that of the previous experiment PandaX-II. Due to the increasing target mass, the sensitivity of searching for both DM and neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) signals in the same detector will be significantly improved. However, the typical energy of interest for $0\nu\beta\beta$ signals is at the MeV scale, which is much higher than that of most popular DM signals. In the baseline readout scheme of the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), the dynamic range is very limited. Signals from the majority of PMTs in the top array of the detector are heavily saturated at MeV energies. This deteriorates the $0\nu\beta\beta$ search sensitivity. In this paper we report a new design of the readout base board of the PMTs for future PandaX DM experiments and present its improved performance on the dynamic range.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problem of the limited dynamic range of the photomultiplier tube (PMT) read - out board in the PandaX dark matter experiment. Specifically, the PandaX - 4T experiment plans to use 4 tons of liquid xenon as the detection medium, which is nearly seven times the target mass of the previous PandaX - II experiment. This not only improves the detection sensitivity of dark matter (DM) and neutrinoless double - beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) signals, but also brings new challenges. ### Main problems 1. **Dynamic range limitation**: - In the PandaX - II experiment, the response of the PMT in the top array starts to be nonlinear when the energy is higher than about 100 keV, resulting in a significant deterioration of the energy scale and resolution, especially in the energy range above MeV. - This saturation phenomenon affects the search sensitivity of the $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal, because the energy of these signals is mainly concentrated in the 2 - 3 MeV range. 2. **Energy resolution and background rate**: - The typical energy range of the $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal is far from that of the dark matter signal (usually less than 10 keV). - The design of the PandaX - II experiment is mainly for the search of dark matter, so its performance in the MeV energy range is limited, with a high background rate and poor energy resolution. ### Solutions To overcome the above problems, the paper proposes an improved PMT read - out board design. The main improvements include: 1. **Increasing the dynamic range**: - In the new design, by changing the connection method of the coupling capacitors, each capacitor is directly connected to the ground instead of being connected in series. - The ability to read signals from the eighth dynode (DY8) is increased. DY8 has a smaller gain but a larger dynamic range. 2. **Reducing oscillation**: - During the test process, some damped oscillations were observed on the falling edge of the DY8 signal. By adding a matching resistor near DY8, this oscillation was significantly reduced. ### Experimental verification To verify the effectiveness of the new design, the research team set up a measurement system, as shown in Figure 2. The system includes a laser diode, a spectroscopic system, a dark box, a waveform digitizer and a data acquisition server. By adjusting the laser intensity, signals of different energies can be simulated and the dynamic range of the PMT can be measured. ### Results - **Dynamic range improvement**: - When the newly - designed PMT reads signals using DY8, the dynamic range reaches about 200k PE, meeting the requirements of the PandaX - 4T experiment. - Compared with the baseline design, the dynamic range of the new design is increased by more than 10 times. - **Non - linear correction**: - Between 150k PE and 200k PE, there is a certain non - linearity in the DY8 signal, but it can be corrected by actual data. ### Summary In the future, the PandaX dark matter experiment will search for dark matter and $0\nu\beta\beta$ signals more sensitively. The PandaX - 4T experiment requires that the dynamic range of the PMT should reach at least 150k PE. The newly - designed read - out board has successfully achieved this goal by improving the capacitor configuration and increasing the ability to read signals from DY8. The new read - out board has been assembled in the central area of the top and bottom PMT arrays in the PandaX - 4T experiment, and its performance will be evaluated using actual data.
