Abstract:Lead free ceramics (K-0.5 Na0.5+x)NbO3 (0 <= x <= 0.3, KNN-x) were prepared by a novel method mixing perovskite structure of NaNbO3 and KNbO3 powders. Effects of Na excess and sintering temperatures on phase structure, microstructure and electrical properties of KNN ceramics were investigated. Result showed that the single phase perovskite structure was obtained in the KNN-0.1 ceramic sintered at 1070 degrees C, which also showed optimized ferroelectric property with P-r = 7.16 mC/cm(2) and E-c = 7.95 kV/cm. The KNN-x ceramic with x = 0.2 showed optimized piezoelectric property with d(33) = 116 pC/N because of the homogeneous dense microstructure.

Abstract:0.95(Li0.02Na0.50K0.48)(Nb0.95Sb0.05)O3–0.05AgTaO3@BaZrO3 (LNKNbSAT@BZ) lead-free ceramics were prepared via a sol–gel core–shell process, in which the LNKNbSAT core particles with 150–200 nm were prepared by solid-phase method and the “BaZrO3” shell with 5–6 nm was prepared by sol–gel technique. The sol–gel core–shell process synthesized LNKNbSAT@BZ powders exist in submicron and present uniform distribution of elements, which improves reaction activity and reduces calcination temperature. The LNKNbSAT@BZ ceramics calcined at 775 °C and sintered at 1150 °C exhibit pure perovskite phase, large density, and excellent electrical properties, correlating with the coexistence of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases and the sol–gel core–shell process utilized in this work. The LNKNbSAT@BZ ceramics approach to normal ferroelectrics with partially diffused phase transition characteristics proved by the Curie–Weiss law and the exponential law fitting simultaneously. The LNKNbSAT@BZ ceramics show thermal activation relaxation behavior, and the high-temperature Cole–Cole impedance performance can be fitted well by the two equivalent circuits (RQC) connected in series. Such space charges effect conforms to the Arrhenius relationship, which presents a hopping-type process and relates to oxygen vacancies produced by the evaporation of alkali metals during sintering.
Preparation and Characterization on Piezo-/Ferro-electric Properties Of(1-X)(knn+lt)+xbi Ceramics

Abstract:Lead free ferroelectric ceramics, (1-x)(0.97Na(0.5)K(0.5)NbO(3)+0.03LiTaO(3))+xBiInO(3)[(1-x)(KNN+LT)+xBI] ternary solid solution system were prepared by conventional solid state reaction method. The polycrystal structure, dielectric and piezo-/ferro-electric properties were systematically characterized. The results show that the (1-x)(KNN+LT)+xBI ceramics present pure perovskite structure in which the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases coexist at room temperature. With increasing of BI content, the tetragonal phase and the lattice parameter increase gradually and the Curie temperature T-c decreases, while the phase transition temperature To-t from orthorhombic to tetragonal phase increases. With more BI addition, the electric properties decrease with the appearance of oxygen vacancy due to Bi loss at high temperature. The optimal properties are achieved in the (1-x)(KNN+LT)+xBI ceramics (x=0.0015) with the Curie temperature T-c= 400 degrees C, phase transition temperature To-t =126 degrees C, piezoelectric constant d(33) =160 pC/N, remnant polarization P-r=19.26 mu C/cm(2) and coercive field E-c =7.75 kV/cm.

Abstract:(1-x)(Li0.02Na0.5K0.48)(Nb0.95Sb0.05)O-3-x(Bi0.5Na0.5)(Zr0.97W0.01Fe0.02)O-3 (LNKNbS-xBiNZWF, x = 0.035, 0.04, 0.045, 0.05, and 0.055) lead-free piezoceramics were fabricated by traditional solid-state sintering method via two-step sintering technique, where the effects of BiNZWF doping amount and ceramic processing were studied systematically. The formation of orthorhombic-tetragonal (O-T) phase boundary in the LNKNbS-xBiNZWF system is confirmed by X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement and Raman spectroscopy, where the BiNZWF doping amount affects the O-T phase proportion. The LNKNbS-xBiNZWF ceramics approach to normal ferroelectrics but have apparent relaxation characteristic. Oxygen vacancies dominate the high-temperature conduction in the LNKNbS-0.04BiNZWF ceramics, which are generated by the volatilization of Bi and alkali metals during sintering. The LNKNbS-0.04BiNZWF ceramics exhibit excellent electrical properties, correlating with using the two-step sintering method, appropriate proportion of O phase and T phase, high densification and improved microstructure uniformity.
Effects of nano-sized BCZT on structure and electrical properties of KNN-based lead-free piezoceramics

Abstract:The (1 − x)(Li 0.03 Na 0.5 K 0.47 )(Nb 0.92 Sb 0.05 Ta 0.03 )O 3 –xBa 0.85 Ca 0.15 Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (LNKNST–BCZT, x = 0, 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5%) lead-free piezoceramics were synthesized by the conventional solid-state reaction method with adding nano-sized Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15 Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (BCZT) powder to investigate their influences on crystal structure and electrical properties. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals that all the sintered LNKNST–BCZT ceramics exhibit pure perovskite structure with the mainly rhombohedral (R) phase or the coexistence of rhombohedral (R) phase and tetragonal (T) phase. The composition of the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics locates around the critical point, i.e., the ceramics changing from the coexistence of rhombohedral (R) phase and tetragonal (T) phase to purely rhombohedral (R) phase, and presents the most densified microstructure morphology, which can be confirmed further by the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) observation. There are two dielectric anomalies in the temperature dependent dielectric properties curves of the LNKNST–BCZT ceramics, which correlate with the ferroelectric rhombohedral (R) phase changing to the ferroelectric tetragonal (T) phase, and then to the paraelectric cubic (C) phase. Both the Curie–Weiss law and the power law fittings confirm the diffuse phase transition ferroelectrics characteristic of the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics, which is considered as correlating with the polar nanoregions (PNRs). Due to the densification effect caused by the chosen amount of nano-sized BCZT doping and the construction of R–T polymorphic phase boundary, the LNKNST–1.5%BCZT ceramics exhibit the best ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. The complex impedance spectroscopy analysis confirms that the extrinsic electrical conduction mechanism at high temperatures is dominated by the oxygen vacancies induced by the evaporation of the alkali metals during sintering.

Abstract:New (1–x)K0.48Na0.52NbO3–xBi(Zn0.5Zr0.5)O3 [(1–x)KNN–xBZZ] lead-free piezoceramics were prepared by the conventional solid state method. Effects of BZZ content on their phase structure, microstructure, and electrical properties were studied. As the BZZ content increases, both TO–T and TC gradually decrease, the dielectric constant increases and the dielectric loss almost decreases. The ceramic with x = 0.0075 has enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties (e.g., d33 ∼ 156 pC/N, kp ∼ 0.44, Pr ∼ 27.5 μC/cm2, and Ec ∼ 11.2 kV/cm). The underlying physical mechanism for enhanced electrical properties has been given. As a result, adding BZZ is an effective way to enhance the piezoelectric properties of KNN ceramics.

Abstract:0.95 (Li0.04Na0.48K0.48)(Nb0.94Sb0.06)O-3-0.05(Ba0.5Ca0.5)(Zr0.5Hf0.5)O-3 (LNKNbS-BCZH) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the solid-state reaction method via the two-step sintering process. Via composition designing pure perovskite LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics are synthesized, which present complex coexistence of orthogonal and tetragonal ferroelectric phases in rhombohedral matrix and high densification depending greatly on the two-step sintering conditions. Due to the addition of some metal elements and the second component BCZH, there appear dielectric peak at Curie temperature T-c/T-m of similar to 200 degrees C and dielectric shoulder around room temperature, and the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics approach to normal ferroelectrics with some diffused phase transition characteristic. Excellent ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity are obtained via composition designing and two-step sintering, in which the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics sintered at 1180 degrees C for 45 min and 1050 degrees C for 8 h exhibit the largest piezoelectric constant of 232 pC/N, which can be increased further by room-temperature aging and re-poling. The safe working temperature for piezoelectric applications of the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics should be below 100 degrees C. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics have been extensively investigated as replacements for Pb(Zr, Ti)O3-based ceramics. KNN-based ceramics exhibit an orthorhombic structure at room temperature and a rhombohedral–orthorhombic (R–O) phase transition temperature (TR–O), orthorhombic–tetragonal (O–T) phase transition temperature (TO–T), and Curie temperature of −110, 190, and 420 °C, respectively. Forming KNN-based ceramics with a multistructure that can assist in domain rotation is one technique for enhancing their piezoelectric properties. This review investigates and introduces KNN-based ceramics with various multistructures. A reactive-templated grain growth method that aligns the grains of piezoceramics in a specific orientation is another approach for improving the piezoelectric properties of KNN-modified ceramics. The piezoelectric properties of the [001]-textured KNN-based ceramics are improved because their microstructures are similar to those of the [001]-oriented single crystals. The improvement in the piezoelectric properties after [001] texturing is largely influenced by the crystal structure of the textured ceramics. In this review, [001]-textured KNN-based ceramics with different crystal structures are investigated and systematically summarized.

Abstract:(1-x)(Li0.02Na0.48K0.48Ag0.02)(Nb0.95Sb0.05)O-3-x(Ba0.4Bi0.3Na0.3)ZrO3 (LNKANbS-xBBiNZ, x = 0.04, 0.045, 0.05, 0.055 and 0.06) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method via the two-step sintering route. The effects of the content of BBiNZ on electrical properties and microstructural morphology of the LNKANbS-xBBiNZ ceramics were studied systematically. The designing of forming rhombohedral-tetragonal phase boundary in the LNKANbS-xBBiNZ system is confirmed by XRD Rietveld refinement and Raman spectroscopy, whose phase proportion is affected greatly by the BBiNZ amount. The LNKANbS-xBBiNZ ceramics exhibit complicated dielectric behavior, whose dielectric response characteristic can be fitted by the quadratic law and the Curie-Weiss law, and both having some deviation. The high-temperature conductivity of the LNKANbS-0.045BBiNZ ceramics is controlled by oxygen vacancies detected by both conductive activation energy and relaxation activation energy fitting. The LNKANbS-0.045BBiNZ ceramics exhibit excellent electrical properties, correlating with appropriate R-T phase composition proportion and improved densification and microstructural homogeneity obtained by adjusting the BBiNZ content and using the two-step sintering method.
Feasible Way to Achieve Multifunctional (K, Na)NbO 3 -Based Ceramics: Controlling Long-Range Ferroelectric Ordering

Abstract:It is challenging to achieve highly tunable multifunctional properties in one piezoelectric ceramic system through a simple method due to the complicated relationship between the microscopic structure and macroscopic property. Here, multifunctional potassium sodium niobate [(K, Na)NbO3 (KNN)]-based lead-free piezoceramics with tunable piezoelectric and electrostrictive properties are achieved by controlling the long-range ferroelectric ordering (LRFO) through antimony (Sb) doping. At a low Sb doping, the slightly distorted NbO6 octahedron and the softened B-O repulsion well maintain the LRFO and induce plenty of nanoscale domains coexisting with a few polar nanoregions (PNRs). Thereby, the diffused rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal (R-O-T) multiphase coexistence with distinct dielectric jumping is constructed near room temperature, by which the nearly 2-fold increase in the piezoelectric coefficient (d33 ∼ 539 pC/N) and the temperature-insensitive strain (the unipolar strain varies less than 8% at 27-120 °C) are obtained. At a high Sb doping, the LRFO is significantly destroyed, leading to predominant PNRs. Thus, a typical relaxor is obtained at the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition near room temperature, in which a large electrostrictive coefficient (Q33 = 0.035 m4/C2), independent of the electric field and temperature, is obtained and comparable to that of lead-based materials. Therefore, our results prove that controlling the LRFO is a feasible way to achieve high-performance multifunctional KNN-based ceramics and is beneficial to the future composition design for KNN-based ceramics.

Abstract:Lead-free MnO doped 0.955K0.5Na0.5NbO3-0.045Bi0.5Na0.5ZrO3(abbreviate as KNN-0.045BNZ) ceramics have been prepared by a conventional solid-state sintering method in a reducing atmosphere. The addition of MnO suppresses grain growth and eliminates the liquid phase. MnO dopant changes the crystalline structures of KNN-0.045BNZ ceramics from the classical Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB) with rhombohedral phase (R) and tetragonal phase (T) to the suppressed MPB with R/T phase. The 0.4% MnO doped KNN-0.045BNZ ceramics show an excellent electrical properties with quasi static piezoelectric constantd33=300 pC/N, Curie temperatureTC= 350 °C, insulation resistivity ρ=4.83 × 1011(Ω・cm), and high field piezoelectric constants =438 pm/V (atEmax= 25 kV/cm). The results indicate that the 0.4%Mn doped KNN-0.045BNZ ceramic is a promising lead-free piezoelectric candidate material for commercial applications.

Recently, solid solutions based on sodium potassium niobate (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN) have become one of the globally-important lead-free counterparts, due to their favourable dielectric and piezoelectric properties. This data article provides information on the ferroelectric properties and core–shell grain structures for the system, (1−y)[(1−x)Na0.5K0.5NbO3 – xLiTaO3] – yBiScO3 (x=0–0.1, y=0.02, abbreviated as KNN–xLT–2BS). We show elemental analysis with aid of TEM spot-EDX to identify three-type grain-types in the KNN–LT–BS ternary system. Melting behaviour has been assessed using a tube furnace with build-in camera. Details for the ferroelectric properties and core–shell chemical segregation are illustrated.
Effect of KNN substitution on the structural, electrical, and piezo characteristics of lead-free 0.94NBT–0.06SrTiO3 ceramics

Abstract:The conventional solid-state reaction approach was employed to develop 0.94NBT–0.06SrTiO 3 and 0.94NBT–0.06SrTiO 3 –KNN lead free electro ceramics. Both ceramics coexist in the rhombohedral structural phase ( R 3 c ) and tetragonal structural phase ( P 4 mm ) regions. When K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 (KNN) is introduced to 0.94Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 –0.06SrTiO 3 , the structure grows more symmetric without compromising electrical polarization. The surface morphology of both ceramics is measured by the average grain size, which is reduced somewhat from 3 to 2.6 μm, resulting in the influence of KNN. The composition-induced local structural transition—i.e., the change from order to disorder-occurs when KNN is added to the 0.94NBT–0.06SrTiO 3 binary system. Additionally, the depolarization temperature ( T d ) increases substantially with the inclusion of KNN. When KNN is present, the coercive field ( E c ) dramatically reduces from 32 to 21 kV/cm (~ Δ E = 11 kV/cm), without impairing the remaining remnant polarization ( P r ). When compared to 0.94NBT–0.06SrTiO 3 , the substitution of KNN produces a high strain response of roughly 0.25% (under a mild field of 60 kV/cm). The longitudinal strain value of 140pC/N was determined parallelly. As a result, both of these lead-free ceramics are attractive prospects for next-generation electro ceramic applications.

Abstract:(1-x)(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3–xBi(Li0.5Nb0.5)O3 [(1-x)KNN–xBLN, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.02] dielectric ceramics were synthesized by an ordinary sintering technique. The effects of Bi(Li0.5Nb0.5)O3 addition on the phase structure, microstructure and dielectric properties of KNN ceramics were studied. The phase structure of ceramics shifted from the orthorhombic to pseudo-cubic phase structure with increasing the content of Bi(Li0.5Nb0.5)O3. The addition of Bi(Li0.5Nb0.5)O3 depressed the transition temperature of the orthogonal and tetragonal phases, which is a benefit to the thermal stability of KNN ceramics. Especially, as x = 0.01, the ceramics have a high relative permittivity εr (~ 1557), low dielectric loss tanδ (< 2.4%) and good thermal stability Δε/ε150°C (≤ ± 10%) from 150 °C to 365 °C. Especially, when x = 0.005, the piezoelectric constant d33 was improved to 133 pC/N. Furthermore, the comprehensive properties of (1-x)KNN–xBLN (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.02) ceramics were enhanced significantly to those of pure KNN ceramics. These results indicate that these ceramics could be considered as the prominent promising candidates for high-temperature capacitor application.
Low-temperature Sintering of KNN with Excess Alkaline Elements and the Study of Its Ferroelectric Domain Structure

Abstract:In the present work, lead-free K0.48Na0.52NbO3 (KNN) ceramics were synthesized by conventional ceramics processes. The excess 3.3 mol% Na2CO3 and 1.1 mol% K2CO3 were added to decrease the sintering temperature to 990 °C and effectively promote the densification of KNN ceramics. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the excess Na2CO3 and K2CO3 would induce the formation of the A-site riched secondary phase with the sintering temperature. Compositional segregation phenomenon enhanced by different sintering temperature, spurs the formation of secondary phase in KNN-AEe ceramics. In addition, the difference between ferroelectric domain structure of the poled and as-sintered KNN-AEe samples for 990 °C was investigated. Via XRD analysis and SEM observation, it was found that the domain orientation was urged during the poling process.

Abstract:In this paper, lead-free (Na0.474K0.474Li0.052)(Nb0.948Sb0.052)O3 ceramics were synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction route. The effects of sintering temperature on the crystal structure, microstructure, densification, dielectric properties, and ferroelectric properties of the KNNLS ceramics were addressed. X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectrum indicated a transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal phase during the sintering temperature region. This transition is attributed to the migration of Li between the matrix grain and grain boundary. Scanning electron microscopy study revealed increased grain size and enhanced densification with increasing sintering temperature. The density of the ceramics sintered at 1080°C reached a maximum value of 4.22g/cm3. KNNLS ceramics sintered at an optimum temperature of 1080°C exhibited high piezoelectric properties, that is 242pC/N for d33, 0.42 for kp and 18.2μC/cm2 for Pr.

Abstract:Lead-free K0.48Na0.52NbO3 (KNN) ceramics doped with Li0.8Ni0.2Nb0.96O3 (LNN) were prepared by the mixed oxide method. The structure, microstructure, and electrical properties of the ceramics were investigated systematically. All the samples exhibited the main orthorhombic perovskite phase structure, and the secondary phase K5.75Nb10.85O30 was detected when x >= 0.010. Our work revealed that the Ni2+ ions entered into the B-site and lead to the formation of small amounts of the secondary phase. Moreover, the addition of LNN increased the density of the KNN ceramics. With increasing addition of LNN, the T-C increased while the TO-T decreased, respectively. The ceramic doped with 2 mol% LNN exhibited optimum electrical properties with P-r of 23.92 mu C/cm(2), d(33) of 110 +/- 3 pC/N, k(p) of 27.15% and k(t) of 27.75%. The Q(m) increased significantly with increasing LNN content, and the maximum value of 195 is obtained at x=0.035. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics 0.95(K0.5Na0.5)NbO3-0.05Li(Nb0.5S0.5)O-3 (KNN-5LNS) were synthesized by the conventional ceramic sintering technique. The phase structure, microstructure and electrical properties of KNN-5LNS ceramics were investigated. The results of XRD indicate that KNN-5LNS possess a pure tetragonal structure. With the sintering temperature increasing, the average size of grains first increases and then decreases. Maximum value 3.5 mu m was obtained for samples sintered at 1020 degrees C. The KNN-5LNS sintered at 1020 degrees C obtains the optimum electrical properties: d(33)=245 pC/N, K-p=0.42, tan delta=0.03, epsilon(T)(33)/epsilon(0)=640, E-c=2.1 kV/mm, and P-r=20 mu C/cm(2)

Abstract:Abstract0.92(Na0.51K0.49−xLix)NbO3–0.02Bi0.5K0.5TiO3–0.06BaZrO3 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, and 0.05) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by solid state reaction route. The effect of Li doping amount on the structure and electrical properties of the ceramics were investigated. All ceramics had pure perovskite structure, while the crystallographic symmetry changed from rhombohedral to tetragonal with the increase of Li doping amount. A PZT-like morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) with the coexistence of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases was identified in the composition of x = 0.03. As expected, the ceramics of the MPB composition showed optimal properties: piezoelectric coefficient d33 = 227 pC/N, planar electromechanical coupling coefficient kp = 39.3 %, dielectric permittivity ε33T/ε0$$ \varepsilon_{33}^{T} /\varepsilon_{0} $$ = 1,640, dielectric loss tanδ = 2.0 %, remnant polarization Pr = 13.3 μC/cm2, coercive field Ec = 1.53 kV/mm, and Curie temperature Tc = 253 °C. Together with good temperature stability to 200 °C, this KNN-based lead-free ceramics should be very promising for practical applications.
