Abstract:In this study, the aim is to determine optimized calcination and sintering temperatures for the synthesis of lead-free K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 (KNN) ceramics to achieve excellent di-/piezo-/ferro-electric characteristics. The solid-state reaction method was used to synthesize KNN ceramics. Initially, KNN ceramic powders were prepared by calcination at different temperatures in the range 850–1050 °C. The crystalline structure and phase analysis of calcined KNN powdered samples were done by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) combined with Rietveld Refinement. Based on XRD and Rietveld refinement data, KNN powder calcined at 1050 °C was chosen as the optimized calcination temperature. Keeping the calcination temperature to be fixed at 1050 °C, KNN pellets were sintered at temperatures in the range 1075–1150 °C and were characterized for their structural, morphological, dielectric, piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images showed increase in average grain size with increase in sintering temperature. Furthermore, significant influence of densification and average grain size were observed on all the measured electrical properties. The KNN ceramics which were calcined at 1050 °C and sintered at 1125 °C displayed enhanced di-/piezo-/ferro-electrical characteristics in comparison to other sintered KNN samples. The results obtained in the present work suggest that the optimized calcination and sintering temperatures for the preparation for KNN ceramics were 1050 °C and 1125 °C, respectively. For KNN sample sintered at 1125 °C, the values of various measured parameters are: ε r ~ 460 (@ RT, @10 kHz), d 33 ~ 290 pC/N, d 33 * max ~ 718 pm/V, d 33 * avg. ~ 321 pm/V, E c ~ 5.73 kV/cm and P r ~ 98.21 μC/ making them a viable lead-free piezo-/ferro-electric contender.
