Abstract:Let $(\mathcal{H}_k, \mathcal{H}_{\ell})$ be a pair of Hilbert function spaces with kernels $k, \ell$. In a 2005 paper, Shimorin showed that a certain factorization condition on $(k, \ell)$ yields a commutant lifting theorem for multipliers $\mathcal{H}_k\to\mathcal{H}_{\ell}$, thus unifying and extending previous results due to Ball-Trent-Vinnikov and Volberg-Treil. Our main result is a strong converse to Shimorin's theorem for a large class of holomorphic pairs $(k, \ell),$ which leads to a full characterization of the complete Pick property for such pairs. We also present a short alternative proof of sufficiency for Shimorin's condition. Finally, we establish necessary conditions for abstract pairs $(k, \ell)$ to satisfy the complete Pick property, further generalizing Shimorin's work with proofs that are new even in the single-kernel case $k=\ell.$ Our approach differs from Shimorin's in that we do not work with the Nevanlinna-Pick problem directly; instead, we are able to extract vital information for $(k, \ell)$ through Carathéodory-Fejér interpolation.

Abstract:We give a short new proof of the Arendt-Chernoff-Kato theorem, which characterizes generators of positive C0 semigroups in order unit spaces. The proof avoids half-norms and subdifferentials, and is based on a sufficient condition for an operator to have positive inverse, which is new even for matrices.

Abstract:We present a necessary and sufficient condition for the strict positive definiteness of a real, continuous, isotropic and positive definite kernel on a two-point compact homogeneous space. The characterization adds to others previously obtained by D. Chen at all (2003) in the case in which the space is a sphere of dimension at least 2 and Menegatto at all (2006) in the case in which the space is the unit circle. As an application, we use the characterization to improve upon a recent result on the differentiability of positive definite kernels on the spaces.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to give a precise proof of the completeness of Lamb modes and associated modes. This proof is relatively simple and short but relies on two powerful mathematical theorems. The first one is a theorem on elliptic systems with a parameter due to Agranovich and Vishik. The second one is a theorem due to Locker which gives a criterion to show the completeness of the set of generalized eigenvectors of a Hilbert-Schmidt discrete operator.

Abstract:In the seminal book Méchanique analitique, Lagrange, 1788, the notion of a Lagrange multiplier was first introduced in order to study a smooth minimization problem subject to equality constraints. The idea is that, under some regularity assumption, at a solution of the problem, one may associate a new variable (Lagrange multiplier) to each constraint such that an equilibrium equation is satisfied. This concept turned out to be central in studying more general constrained optimization problems and it has lead to the rapid development of nonlinear programming as a field of mathematics since the works of Karush and Kuhn-Tucker, who considered equality and inequality constraints. The usual proofs for the existence of Lagrange multipliers are somewhat cumbersome, relying on the implicit function theorem or duality theory. In the first section of this note we present an elementary proof of existence of Lagrange multipliers in the simplest context, which is easily accessible to a wide variety of readers. In addition, this proof is readily extended to the much more general context of conic constraints, which we present in the second section together with the background properties needed on the projection onto a closed and convex cone.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>5$. We show the existence of minimal models for pseudo-effective NQC klt generalized pairs in dimension three over $\mathbb{K}$. As a consequence, we prove the termination of flips for pseudo-effective threefold NQC klt generalized pairs over $\mathbb{K}$. This provides a new proof on the termination of flips for pseudo-effective pairs over $\mathbb{K}$ without using the non-vanishing theorems. A key ingredient of our proof is the ACC for lc thresholds in dimension $\leq 3$ and the global ACC in dimension $\leq 2$ for generalized pairs over $\mathbb{K}$.

Abstract:Zorn's Lemma is a well-known equivalent of the Axiom of Choice. It is usually regarded as a topic in axiomatic set theory, and its historically standard proof (from the Axiom of Choice) relies on transfinite recursion, a non-elementary set-theoretic machinery. However, the statement of Zorn's Lemma itself uses only elementary terminology for partially ordered sets. Therefore, it is worthy to establish a proof using only such elementary terminology. Following this line of study, we give a new simple proof of Zorn's Lemma, which does not even use the notion of a well-ordered set.

Abstract:We give a simple and direct proof that super-consistency implies the cut elimination property in deduction modulo. This proof can be seen as a simplification of the proof that super-consistency implies proof normalization. It also takes ideas from the semantic proofs of cut elimination that proceed by proving the completeness of the cut-free calculus. As an application, we compare our work with the cut elimination theorems in higher-order logic that involve V-complexes.

Abstract:A recent theorem of Diverio--Trapani and Wu--Yau asserts that a compact Kähler manifold with a Kähler metric of quasi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature is projective and canonically polarized. This confirms a long-standing conjecture of Yau. We consider the notion of $(\varepsilon,\delta)$--quasi-negativity, generalizing quasi-negativity, and obtain gap-type theorems for $\int_X c_1(K_X)^n>0$ in terms of the real bisectional curvature and weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature. These theorems are also a generalization of that results in \cite{ZhangZheng} by Zhang-Zheng and in \cite{ChuLeeTam} by Chu-Lee-Tam.
