Commuting Local Hamiltonians Beyond 2D

Abstract:Commuting local Hamiltonians provide a testing ground for studying many of the most interesting open questions in quantum information theory, including the quantum PCP conjecture and the existence of area laws. Although they are a simplified model of quantum computation, the status of the commuting local Hamiltonian problem remains largely unknown. A number of works have shown that increasingly expressive families of commuting local Hamiltonians admit completely classical verifiers. Despite intense work, the largest class of commuting local Hamiltonians we can place in NP are those on a square lattice, where each lattice site is a qutrit. Even worse, many of the techniques used to analyze these problems rely heavily on the geometry of the square lattice and the properties of the numbers 2 and 3 as local dimensions. In this work, we present a new technique to analyze the complexity of various families of commuting local Hamiltonians: guided reductions. Intuitively, these are a generalization of typical reduction where the prover provides a guide so that the verifier can construct a simpler Hamiltonian. The core of our reduction is a new rounding technique based on a combination of Jordan's Lemma and the Structure Lemma. Our rounding technique is much more flexible than previous work, and allows us to show that a larger family of commuting local Hamiltonians is in NP, albiet with the restriction that all terms are rank-1. Specifically, we prove the following two results: 1. Commuting local Hamiltonians in 2D that are rank-1 are contained in NP, independent of the qudit dimension. Note that this family of commuting local Hamiltonians has no restriction on the local dimension or the locality. 2. We prove that rank-1, 3D commuting Hamiltonians with qudits on edges are in NP. To our knowledge this is the first time a family of 3D commuting local Hamiltonians has been contained in NP.

A Proof of the Box Conjecture for Commuting Pairs of Matrices

Abstract:We prove the Box Conjecture for pairs of commuting nilpotent matrices, as formulated by Iarrobino et al [28]. This describes the Jordan type of the dense orbit in the nilpotent commutator of a given nilpotent matrix. Our main tool is the Burge correspondence between the set of all partitions and a set of binary words [15, 16]. For connection with the algebraic and geometric setup of matrices and orbits we employ some of Shayman's results on invariant subspaces of a nilpotent matrix [45, 46]. Our proof is valid over an arbitrary field.

Abstract:The class of quasi-graphic matroids, recently introduced by Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle, is minor closed and contains both the class of lifted-graphic matroids and the class of frame matroids, each of which generalises the class of graphic matroids. In this paper, we prove that the matroids $U_{3,7}$ and $U_{4,7}$ are the only $9$-connected excluded minors for the class of quasi-graphic matroids.

Commuting Pairs in Quasigroups

Abstract:A quasigroup is a pair $(Q, *)$ where $Q$ is a non-empty set and $*$ is a binary operation on $Q$ such that for every $(a, b) \in Q^2$ there exists a unique $(x, y) \in Q^2$ such that $a*x=b=y*a$. Let $(Q, *)$ be a quasigroup. A pair $(x, y) \in Q^2$ is a commuting pair of $(Q, *)$ if $x * y = y * x$. Recently, it has been shown that every rational number in the interval $(0, 1]$ can be attained as the proportion of ordered pairs that are commuting in some quasigroup. For every positive integer $n$ we establish the set of all integers $k$ such that there is a quasigroup of order $n$ with exactly $k$ commuting pairs. This allows us to determine, for a given rational $q \in (0, 1]$, the spectrum of positive integers $n$ for which there is a quasigroup of order $n$ whose proportion of commuting pairs is equal to $q$.

Quantization commutes with reduction again: the quantum GIT conjecture I

Abstract:For a compact monotone symplectic manifold $X$ with Hamiltonian action of a compact Lie group $G$ and smooth symplectic reduction, we relate its gauged $2$-dimensional $A$-model to the $A$-model of $X/\!/G$. This (long conjectured) result is parallel to the ($B$-model!) \emph{quantization commutes with reduction} theorem of Guillemin and Sternberg in quantum mechanics. Here, we spell out some of the precise statements, and outline the proof of equality for the spaces of states (quantum cohomology). We also indicate the way to some related results in the non-monotone case. Additional Floer theory details will be included in a follow-up paper.

Abstract:Let $KQ$ be a path algebra, where $Q$ is a finite quiver and $K$ is a field. We study $KQ/C$ where $C$ is the two-sided ideal in $KQ$ generated by all differences of parallel paths in $Q$. We show that $KQ/C$ is always finite dimensional and its global dimension is finite. Furthermore, we prove that $KQ/C$ is Morita equivalent to an incidence algebra. The paper starts with the more general setting, where $KQ$ is replaced by $KQ/I$ with $I$ a two-sided ideal in $KQ$.

Abstract:A mixed graph is the graph obtained from an unoriented simple graph G by giving directions to some edges of G , where G is often called the underlying graph of . In this paper, we discuss the determinants of two classes of incidence matrices of the second kind of rootless mixed trees and unicyclic mixed graphs. Applying these results, we characterize the explicit expressions of various minors for Hermitian (quasi-)Laplacian matrix of the second kind of . Moreover, we give two sufficient conditions that the module of any cofactor of Hermitian (quasi-)Laplacian matrix of the second kind of the mixed graph is equal to the number of spanning trees of the underlying graph G .

Abstract:We use Maya diagrams to refine the criterion by Fulton and Woodward for the smallest powers of the quantum parameter $q$ that occur in a product of Schubert classes in the (small) quantum cohomology of partial flags. Our approach using Maya diagrams yields a combinatorial proof that the minimal quantum degrees are unique for partial flags. Furthermore, visual combinatorial rules are given to perform precise calculations.
Commuting Local Hamiltonian Problem on 2D beyond qubits

Abstract:We study the complexity of local Hamiltonians in which the terms pairwise commute. Commuting local Hamiltonians (CLHs) provide a way to study the role of non-commutativity in the complexity of quantum systems and touch on many fundamental aspects of quantum computing and many-body systems, such as the quantum PCP conjecture and the area law. Despite intense research activity since Bravyi and Vyalyi introduced the CLH problem two decades ago [BV03], its complexity remains largely unresolved; it is only known to lie in NP for a few special cases. Much of the recent research has focused on the physically motivated 2D case, where particles are located on vertices of a 2D grid and each term acts non-trivially only on the particles on a single square (or plaquette) in the lattice. In particular, Schuch [Sch11] showed that the CLH problem on 2D with qubits is in NP. Aharonov, Kenneth and Vigdorovich~[AKV18] then gave a constructive version of this result, showing an explicit algorithm to construct a ground state. Resolving the complexity of the 2D CLH problem with higher dimensional particles has been elusive. We prove two results for the CLH problem in 2D: (1) We give a non-constructive proof that the CLH problem in 2D with qutrits is in NP. As far as we know, this is the first result for the commuting local Hamiltonian problem on 2D beyond qubits. Our key lemma works for general qudits and might give new insights for tackling the general case. (2) We consider the factorized case, also studied in [BV03], where each term is a tensor product of single-particle Hermitian operators. We show that a factorized CLH in 2D, even on particles of arbitrary finite dimension, is equivalent to a direct sum of qubit stabilizer Hamiltonians. This implies that the factorized 2D CLH problem is in NP. This class of CLHs contains the Toric code as an example.

On the Quantum Chromatic Numbers of Small Graphs

Abstract:We make two contributions pertaining to the study of the quantum chromatic numbers of small graphs. Firstly, in an elegant paper, Mančinska and Roberson [\textit{Baltic Journal on Modern Computing}, 4(4), 846-859, 2016] gave an example of a graph $G_{14}$ on 14 vertices with quantum chromatic number 4 and classical chromatic number 5, and conjectured that this is the smallest graph exhibiting a separation between the two parameters. We describe a computer-assisted proof of this conjecture, thereby resolving a longstanding open problem in quantum graph theory. Our second contribution pertains to the study of the rank-$r$ quantum chromatic numbers. While it can now be shown that for every $r$, $\chi_q$ and $\chi^{(r)}_q$ are distinct, few small examples of separations between these parameters are known. We give the smallest known example of such a separation in the form of a graph $G_{21}$ on 21 vertices with $\chi_q(G_{21}) = \chi^{(2)}_q(G_{21}) = 4$ and $ \xi(G_{21}) = \chi^{(1)}_q(G_{21}) = \chi(G_{21}) = 5$. The previous record was held by a graph $G_{msg}$ on 57 vertices that was first considered in the aforementioned paper of Mančinska and Roberson and which satisfies $\chi_q(G_{msg}) = 3$ and $\chi^{(1)}_q(G_{msg}) = 4$. In addition, $G_{21}$ provides the first provable separation between the parameters $\chi^{(1)}_q$ and $\chi^{(2)}_q$. We believe that our techniques for constructing $G_{21}$ and lower bounding its orthogonal rank could be of independent interest.

Abstract:We explore the invariant theory of quantum symmetric spaces of orthogonal and symplectic types by employing R-matrix techniques. Our focus involves establishing connections among the quantum determinant, Sklyanin determinants associated with the orthogonal and symplectic cases, and the quantum Pfaffians over the symplectic quantum space. Drawing inspiration from twisted Yangians, we not only demonstrate but also extend the applicability of q-Jacobi identities, q-Cayley's complementary identities, q-Sylvester identities, and Muir's theorem to Sklyanin minors in both orthogonal and symplectic types, along with q-Pfaffian analogs in the symplectic scenario. Furthermore, we present expressions for Sklyanin determinants and quantum Pfaffians in terms of quasideterminants.

Abstract:The quantum coupling of two given quantum states denotes the set of bipartite states whose marginal states are these given two states. In this paper, we provide tight inequalities to describe the structure of quantum coupling. These inequalities directly imply that the trace distance between two quantum states cannot be determined by the quantum analog of the earth mover’s distance, thus ruling out the equality version of the quantum Kantorovich–Rubinstein theorem for trace distance even in the finite-dimensional case. In addition, we provide an inequality that can be regarded as a quantum generalization of the Kantorovich–Rubinstein theorem. Then, we generalize our inequalities and apply them to the three tripartite quantum marginal problems. Numerical tests with a three-qubit system show that our criteria are much stronger than the known criteria: the strong subadditivity of entropy and the monogamy of entanglement.

Abstract:An infinite graph is quasi-transitive if its vertex set has finitely many orbits under the action of its automorphism group. In this paper we obtain a structure theorem for locally finite quasi-transitive graphs avoiding a minor, which is reminiscent of the Robertson-Seymour Graph Minor Structure Theorem. We prove that every locally finite quasi-transitive graph $G$ avoiding a minor has a tree-decomposition whose torsos are finite or planar; moreover the tree-decomposition is canonical, i.e. invariant under the action of the automorphism group of $G$. As applications of this result, we prove the following. * Every locally finite quasi-transitive graph attains its Hadwiger number, that is, if such a graph contains arbitrarily large clique minors, then it contains an infinite clique minor. This extends a result of Thomassen (1992) who proved it in the 4-connected case and suggested that this assumption could be omitted. * Locally finite quasi-transitive graphs avoiding a minor are accessible (in the sense of Thomassen and Woess), which extends known results on planar graphs to any proper minor-closed family. * Minor-excluded finitely generated groups are accessible (in the group-theoretic sense) and finitely presented, which extends classical results on planar groups. * The domino problem is decidable in a minor-excluded finitely generated group if and only if the group is virtually free, which proves the minor-excluded case of a conjecture of Ballier and Stein (2018).

Abstract:Qudits with local dimension $d>2$ can have unique structure and uses that qubits ($d=2$) cannot. Qudit Pauli operators provide a very useful basis of the space of qudit states and operators. We study the structure of the qudit Pauli group for any, including composite, $d$ in several ways. To cover composite values of $d$, we work with modules over commutative rings, which generalize the notion of vector spaces over fields. For any specified set of commutation relations, we construct a set of qudit Paulis satisfying those relations. We also study the maximum size of sets of Paulis that mutually non-commute and sets that non-commute in pairs. Finally, we give methods to find near minimal generating sets of Pauli subgroups, calculate the sizes of Pauli subgroups, and find bases of logical operators for qudit stabilizer codes. Useful tools in this study are normal forms from linear algebra over commutative rings, including the Smith normal form, alternating Smith normal form, and Howell normal form of matrices. Possible applications of this work include the construction and analysis of qudit stabilizer codes, entanglement assisted codes, parafermion codes, and fermionic Hamiltonian simulation.
