Abstract:We study the notion of algebraic tangent cones at singularities of reflexive sheaves. These correspond to extensions of reflexive sheaves across a negative divisor. We show the existence of optimal extensions in a constructive manner, and we prove the uniqueness in a suitable sense. The results here are an algebro-geometric counterpart of our previous study on singularities of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections.

Abstract:This note is about the observation that the various transition formulas between bases of trigonometric polynomials can be expressed in terms binomial coefficients. More specifically, we write the entries of the Chebyshev matrices $ T$ and $ U$ in terms of binomial coefficients. We remark that the inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ T$ correspond to classical power reduction formulas for trigonometric functions. Therefore the entries of $ T^{-1}$ are expressible in terms of binomial coefficients and powers of two. The inverses of certain submatrices of the Chebyshev matrix $ U$ appear in power reduction formulas involving the Catalan triangles. We could not spot them in the literature. As a corollary the Catalan triangles are interpreted as inverses of rather natural matrices of binomial coefficients. We explain the matrix inversions in terms of Riordan arrays. We solve the integral $ \int _{0}^{2\pi }\cos^{2m}( x)\sin^{2n}( x) dx$ and deduce a hypergeometric identity from the Fourier expansion of $\cos^{2m}(x)$ and $ \sin^{2n}( x)$. As a corollary we prove that super Catalan numbers are integers. We emphasize that from the point of view of these base changes between the trigonometric polynomials it is more natural to work with $2\cos(x)$ and $2\sin(x)$ instead of $\cos(x)$ and $\sin(x)$, since the transition matrices become invertible over the integers. We do a similar analysis for the spread polynomials. This enables us to make a conjecture of Goh and Wildberger more precise. In this exposition we give a mostly self-contained account of the matter, the prerequisites just being four semesters of calculus, linear algebra, elementary complex variables and the residue theorem.

Abstract:A tangential quadrilateral is a convex quadrilateral whose sides are simultaneously tangent to a single circle. In this paper, the primary objective is to construct rational tangential quadrilaterals characterized by having rational area, as well as rational side and diagonal lengths. We relate the existence of such tangential quadrilaterals to properties of a certain elliptic curve. Studying the curve, we are able to construct an infinite family of rational tangential quadrilaterals.

Meromorphic Functions with a Polar Asymptotic Value

Abstract:This paper is part of a general program in complex dynamics to understand parameter spaces of transcendental maps with finitely many singular values. The simplest families of such functions have two asymptotic values and no critical values. These families, up to affine conjugation, depend on two complex parameters. Understanding their parameter spaces is key to understanding families with more asymptotic values, just as understanding quadratic polynomials was for rational maps more generally. The first such families studied were the one-dimensional slices of the exponential family, $\exp(z) + a$, and the tangent family $\lambda \tan z$. The exponential case exhibited phenomena not seen for rational maps: Cantor bouquets in both the dynamic and parameter spaces, and no bounded hyperbolic components. The tangent case, with its two finite asymptotic values $\pm \lambda i$, is closer to the rational case, a kind of infinite degree version of the latter. In this paper, we consider a general family that interpolates between $\exp(z) + a$ and $\lambda \tan z$. Our new family has two asymptotic values and a one-dimensional slice for which one of the asymptotic values is constrained to be pole, the "polar asymptotic value" of the title. We show how the dynamic and parameter planes for this slice exhibit behavior that is a surprisingly delicate interplay between that of the $\exp(z) + a$ and $\lambda \tan z$ families.

Abstract:A value on the extended complex plane is a radially distributed value of a transcendental meromorphic function if most of points at which the value is assumed distribute closely along a finite number of rays from the origin. In this chapter, we study the growth order of a meromorphic function with two radially distributed values and a distinct deficient value (in other words, this hints a condition under which deficient values do not exist). We respectively treat two cases: one is without assumption about the growth of the function considered and the other is under assumption of the function being of the finite lower order. The Nevanlinna characteristic for an angle plays crucial role in the investigation of this subject. Actually, the idea to study this subject is the following: the Nevanlinna characteristic T (r, f) for {vertical bar z vertical bar < r} is controlled by the corresponding proximate function m(r,*) to a deficient value; there exists a solid relation between m(r,*) and the sum of B(r,*) on the finitely many angular domains; and according to some fundamental theorems, we estimate B(r,*) in terms of two C(r,**), which describes the number of poles of the function ** in the angle. Thus T (r, f) is controlled in terms of the number of value-points in the angles. This way also produces discussion of the growth order dealing with other type of radially distributed values. Finally, we simply survey the background and other main results of the subject.

Abstract:We develop an effective algorithm to compute the derivative of a Bianchi modular form with respect to weight space as it varies in a $p$-adic family. This method is entirely local at the modular form, and does not compute the family anywhere outside an infinitesimal neighbourhood. We numerically verify some conjectures surrouding smoothness of the eigenvariety (equivalently, uniqueness of families) and the ``direction over weight space'' of the family. The methods are also applied to study elliptic modular forms and their $\mathcal{L}$-invariants.

Abstract:In this paper we show that if $\mathscr{C}$ is a tangent category then the Ind-category $\operatorname{Ind}(\mathscr{C})$ is a tangent category as well with a tangent structure which locally looks like the tangent structure on $\mathscr{C}$. Afterwards we give a pseudolimit description of $\operatorname{Ind}(\mathscr{C})_{/X}$ when $\mathscr{C}$ admits finite products, show that the $\operatorname{Ind}$-tangent category of a representable tangent category remains representable (in the sense that it has a microlinear object), and we characterize the differential bundles in $\operatorname{Ind}(\mathscr{C})$ when $\mathscr{C}$ is a Cartesian differential category. Finally we compute the $\operatorname{Ind}$-tangent category for the categories $\mathbf{CAlg}_{A}$ of commutative $A$-algebras, $\mathbf{Sch}_{/S}$ of schemes over a base scheme $S$, $A$-$\mathbf{Poly}$ (the Cartesian differential category of $A$-valued polynomials), and $\mathbb{R}$-$\mathbf{Smooth}$ (the Cartesian differential category of Euclidean spaces). In particular, during the computation of $\operatorname{Ind}(\mathbf{Sch}_{/S})$ we give a definition of what it means to have a formal tangent scheme over a base scheme $S$.

Abstract:We study the tangential case in 2-dimensional almost-Riemannian geometry. We analyse the connection with the Martinet case in sub-Riemannian geometry. We compute estimations of the exponential map which allow us to describe the conjugate locus and the cut locus at a tangency point. We prove that this last one generically accumulates at the tangency point as an asymmetric cusp whose branches are separated by the singular set.

Abstract:In this paper we describe the tangent vectors of the stable and unstable manifold of a class of Anosov diffeomorphisms on the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ using the method of formal series and derivative trees. We start with linear automorphism that is hyperbolic and whose eigenvectors are orthogonal. Then we study the perturbation of such maps by trigonometric polynomial. It is known that there exist a (continuous) map $H$ which acts as a change of coordinate between the perturbed and unperturbed system, but such a map is in general, not differentiable. By "re-scaling" the parametrization $H$, we will be able to obtain the explicit formula for the tangent vectors of these maps.

Abstract:In this paper, we survey and study definitions and properties of tropical polynomials, tropical rational functions and in general, tropical meromorphic functions, emphasizing practical techniques that can really carry out computations. For instance, we introduce maximally represented tropical polynomials and tropical polynomials in compact forms to quickly find roots of given tropical polynomials. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of tropical theorems for meromorphic functions with prescribed roots and poles. Moreover, we explain the relations between classical and tropical meromorphic functions. Different definitions and applications of tropical meromorphic functions are discussed. Finally, we point out the properties of tropical meromorphic functions are very similar to complex ones and prove some tropical analogues of theorems in complex analysis.

Abstract:Here we introduce a way to construct generalized trigonometric functions associated with any complex polynomials, and the well known trigonometric functions can be seen to associate with polynomial $x^2-1$. We will show that those generalized trigonometric functions have algebraic identities which generalizes the well known $\sin^2(x)+\cos^2(x)=1$. One application of the generalized trigonometric functions is evaluating infinite series of rational functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a Logarithmic Conjugation Theorem on finitely-connected tori. The theorem states that a harmonic function can be written as the real part of a function whose derivative is analytic and a finite sum of terms involving the logarithm of the modulus of a modified Weierstrass sigma function. We implement the method using arbitrary precision and use the result to find approximate solutions to the Laplace problem and Steklov eigenvalue problem. Using a posteriori estimation, we show that the solution of the Laplace problem on a torus with a few circular holes has error less than $10^{-100}$ using a few hundred degrees of freedom and the Steklov eigenvalues have similar error.

Abstract:We improve upon an Omega result due to Soundararajan with respect to general trigonometric polynomials having positive Fourier coefficients. Instead of Dirichlet's approximation theorem we employ the resonance method and this leads to better extreme results in lattice point problems such as Dirichlet's divisor problem and Gauss' circle problem. Moreover, the present approach shows that the resonance method can also be viewed as an additive device, which has been used in multiplicative problems so far. Its extension to trigonometric polynomials with complex coefficients is also discussed and its connection to Bohr and Jessen's proof of Kronecker's theorem is highlighted.
