Abstract:We obtain in this paper new application of the classical E.C. Titchmarsh' discrete method (1934) in the theory of the Riemann $\zf$ - function. Namely, we shall prove the first localized $\Omega$-theorem for short trigonometric sum. This paper is the English version of the work of reference \cite{4}.

Abstract:The research in the subfield of analytic number theory around error term of summation of sigma functions possesses a history which can be dated back to the mid-19th century when Dirichlet provided an $O(\sqrt{n})$ estimation of error term of summation of $d(n)$. Later, G. Voronoi, G. Kolesnik, and M.N. Huxley (to name just a few) contributed more on the upper bound on the error term of summation of sigma functions. As for $\Omega$-theorems, G.H. Hardy was the first contributor. Later researchers on this topic include G.H. Hardy and T.H. Gronwall, but the amount of academic effort is much sparser than $O$-theorems. This research aims to provide a better $\Omega$-bound for the error term of summation of fractional sigma function $\sigma_{\alpha}(n)$ on the range $0 < \alpha < \frac{1}{2}$, obtaining the result $\Omega((x \ln x)^{\frac{1}{4}+\frac{\alpha}{2}})$.

An effective Linear Independence conjecture for the zeros of the Riemann zeta function and applications

Abstract:Using the same heuristic argument leading to the Lang-Waldschmidt Conjecture in the theory of linear forms in logarithms, we formulate an effective version of the Linear Independence conjecture for the ordinates of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. Then assuming this conjecture, we obtain Omega results for the error term in the prime number theorem, which are conjectured to be best possible by Montgomery. This was claimed to appear in Monach's thesis by Montgomery and Vaughan in their classical book, but such a result or its proof is nowhere to be found in this thesis or in the litterature. Moreover, if in addition to this effective Linear Independence conjecture we assume a conjecture of Gonek and Hejhal on the negative moments of the derivative of the Riemann zeta function, we can show that the summatory function of the Möbius function $M(x)$ is $\Omega_{\pm}\left(\sqrt{x}(\log\log\log x)^{5/4}\right)$. This conditionally resolves a part of a conjecture of Gonek.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the finite sum of cosecants $\sum\csc\big(\varphi+a\pi l/n\big),$ where the index $l$ runs through 1 to $n-1$ and $\varphi$ and $a$ are arbitrary parameters, as well as several closely related sums, such as similar sums of a series of secants, of tangents and of cotangents. These trigonometric sums appear in various problems in mathematics, physics, and a variety of related disciplines. Their particular cases were fragmentarily considered in previous works, and it was noted that even a simple particular case $\sum\csc\big(\pi l/n\big)$ does not have a closed-form, i.e. a compact summation formula. In the paper, we derive several alternative representations for the above-mentioned sums, study their properties, relate them to many other finite and infinite sums, obtain their complete asymptotic expansions for large $n$ and provide accurate upper and lower bounds (e.g. the typical relative error for the upper bound is lesser than $2\times10^{-9}$ for $n\geqslant10$ and lesser than $7\times10^{-14}$ for $n\geqslant50$, which is much better than the bounds we could find in previous works). Our researches reveal that these sums are deeply related to several special numbers and functions, especially to the digamma function (furthermore, as a by-product, we obtain several interesting summations formulae for the digamma function). Asymptotical studies show that these sums may have qualitatively different behaviour depending on the choice of $\varphi$ and $a$; in particular, as $n$ increases some of them may become sporadically large. Finally, we also provide several historical remarks related to various sums considered in the paper. We show that some results in the field either were rediscovered several times or can easily be deduced from various known formulae, including some formulae dating back to the XVIIIth century.

Abstract:In a recent paper Vinay, Shweta, and Harshitha use Ramanujan's theta functions to prove several trigonometric equalities. Elementary proofs for some of these equalities were given by the author and Zeilberger, then for all but one by Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu. The remaining equality was proved in the same paper of Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu in a non-totally elementary way, in that it uses a result of Gauss in cyclotomy: here we give an elementary proof of the same equality. Also we show how to use automated tools to discover and prove some generalizations.

Omega Theorems for Logarithmic Derivatives of Zeta and L-functions Near the 1-line

Abstract:We establish an omega theorem for logarithmic derivative of the Riemann zeta function near the 1-line by resonance method. We show that the inequality $\left| \zeta^{\prime}\left(\sigma_A+it\right)/\zeta\left(\sigma_A+it\right) \right| \geqslant \left(\left(e^A-1\right)/A\right)\log_2 T + O\left(\log_2 T / \log_3 T\right)$ has a solution $t \in [T^{\beta}, T]$ for all sufficiently large $T,$ where $\sigma_A = 1 - A / \log_2 {T}.$Furthermore, we give a conditional lower bound for the measure of the set of $t$ for which the logarithmic derivative of the Riemann zeta function is large. Moreover, similar results can be generalized to Dirichlet $L$-functions.

Abstract:We study lower bounds for the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ along vertical arithmetic progressions in the right-half of the critical strip. We show that the lower bounds obtained in the discrete case coincide, up to the constants in the exponential, with the ones known for the continuous case, that is when the imaginary part of $s$ ranges on a given interval. Our methods are based on a discretization of the resonance method for estimating extremal values of $\zeta(s)$.

Abstract:The authors derive a linear ODE (ordinary differential equation) whose particular solution is the Butzer–Flocke–Hauss complete real-parameter Omega function Ω(w), which is associated with the complex-index Bernoulli function Bα(z) and with the complex-index Euler function Eα(z). This is accomplished here with the aid of an integral representation of the alternating Mathieu series S˜(w). A new integral representation and some two-sided bounding inequalities are also given for the Omega function.

Abstract:We obtain $\Omega$-results for linear exponential sums with rational additive twists of small prime denominators weighted by Hecke eigenvalues of Maass cusp forms for the group $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb Z)$. In particular, our $\Omega$-results match the expected conjectural upper bounds when the denominator of the twist is sufficiently small compared to the length of the sum. Non-trivial $\Omega$-results for sums over short segments are also obtained. Along the way we produce lower bounds for mean squares of the exponential sums in question and also improve the best known upper bound for these sums in some ranges of parameters.

Abstract:In this paper we study the finite trigonometric sum $\sum a_l\csc\big(\pi l/n\big)$, where $a_l$ are equal to $\cos(2\pi l \nu/n)$ and where the summation index $l$ and the discrete parameter $\nu$ both run through $1$ to $n-1$. This sum is a generalization of Watson's trigonometric sum, which has been extensively studied in a series of previous papers, and also may be regarded as the so-called Dowker sum of order one half. It occurs in various problems in mathematics, physics and engineering, and plays an important role in some number-theoretic problems. In the paper, we obtain several integral and series representations for the above-mentioned sum, investigate its properties, derive various, including asymptotic, expansions for it, and deduce very accurate upper and lower bounds for it (both bounds are asymptotically vanishing). In addition, we obtain two relatively simple approximate formulae containing only several terms, which are also very accurate and can be particularly appreciated in applications. Finally, we also derive several advanced summation formulae for the digamma functions, which relate the gamma and the digamma functions, the investigated sum, as well as the product of a sequence of cosecants $\prod\big(\csc(\pi l/n)\big)^{\csc(\pi l/n)}$

Abstract:Non-negative trigonometric polynomials satisfying certain properties are employed when studying a number of aspects of the Riemann zeta function. When establishing zero-free regions in the critical strip, the classical polynomial $3+4\cos(\theta)+\cos(2\theta)$ used by de la Vallée Poussin has since been replaced by more beneficial polynomials with larger degree. The classical polynomial was also employed by Titchmarsh to provide a lower bound on $|\zeta(\sigma+it)|$ when $\sigma>1$. We show that this polynomial is optimal for this purpose.

Abstract:In this paper, we perform a further investigation for finite trigonometric sums. We establish some connections between the higher-order trigonometric functions and Zeta functions. As applications, various known finite trigonometric sums are explicitly expressed as linear combinations of the Bernoulli and Euler polynomials and numbers.

Abstract:Many variations of the multiple zeta values have been found to play important roles in different branches of mathematics and theoretical physics in recent years, such as the cyclotomic/color version, which appears prominently in the computation of Feynman integrals. In this paper, we introduce a trigonometric variant of the Kaneko–Tsumura ψ-function (called the Kaneko–Tsumura ψ ̃-function) and discover some nice properties similar to those for ordinary Kaneko–Tsumura ψ-values using the method of iterated integrals, which was first studied systematically by K.T. Chen in the 1960s. In particular, we establish some duality formulas involving the Kaneko–Tsumura ψ ̃-function and alternating multiple T-values by adapting Yamamoto's graphical representation method for computing special types of iterated integrals.

Abstract:We derive Vorono\"{\dotlessi} summation formulas for the Liouville function $\lambda(n)$, the Möbius function $\mu(n)$, and for $d^{2}(n)$, where $d(n)$ is the divisor function. The formula for $\lambda(n)$ requires explicit evaluation of certain infinite series for which the use of the Vinogradov-Korobov zero-free region of the Riemann zeta function is indispensable. Several results of independent interest are obtained as special cases of these formulas. For example, a special case of the one for $\mu(n)$ is a famous result of Ramanujan, Hardy, and Littlewood. Cohen type and Ramanujan-Guinand type identities are established for $\lambda(n)$ and $\sigma_a(n)\sigma_b(n)$, where $\sigma_s(n)$ is the generalized divisor function. As expected, infinite series over the non-trivial zeros of $\zeta(s)$ now form an essential part of all of these formulas. A series involving $\sigma_a(n)\sigma_b(n)$ and product of modified Bessel functions occurring in one of our identities has appeared in a recent work of Dorigoni and Treilis in string theory. Lastly, we obtain results on oscillations of Riesz sums associated to $\lambda(n), \mu(n)$ and of the error term of Riesz sum of $d^2(n)$ under the assumption of the Riemann Hypothesis, simplicity of the zeros of $\zeta(s)$, the Linear Independence conjecture, and a weaker form of the Gonek-Hejhal conjecture.

New bounds and progress towards a conjecture on the summatory function of $(-2)^{Ω(n)}$

Abstract:In this article, we study the summatory function \begin{equation*} W(x)=\sum_{n\leq x}(-2)^{\Omega(n)}, \end{equation*} where $\Omega(n)$ counts the number of prime factors of $n$, with multiplicity. We prove $W(x)=O(x)$, and in particular, that $|W(x)|<2260x$ for all $x\geq 1$. This result provides new progress towards a conjecture of Sun, which asks whether $|W(x)|<x$ for all $x\geq 3078$. To obtain our results, we computed new explicit bounds on the Mertens function $M(x)$. These may be of independent interest. Moreover, we obtain similar results and make further conjectures that pertain to the more general function \begin{equation*} W_a(x)=\sum_{n\leq x}(-a)^{\Omega(n)} \end{equation*} for any real $a>0$.
