Abstract:Non-negative trigonometric polynomials satisfying certain properties are employed when studying a number of aspects of the Riemann zeta function. When establishing zero-free regions in the critical strip, the classical polynomial $3+4\cos(\theta)+\cos(2\theta)$ used by de la Vallée Poussin has since been replaced by more beneficial polynomials with larger degree. The classical polynomial was also employed by Titchmarsh to provide a lower bound on $|\zeta(\sigma+it)|$ when $\sigma>1$. We show that this polynomial is optimal for this purpose.

Abstract:We prove that $|\zeta(\sigma+it)|\le 70.7 |t|^{4.438 (1-\sigma)^{3/2}}\log^{2/3}|t|$ for $1/2\le\sigma\le 1$ and $|t|\ge 3$. As a consequence, we improve the explicit zero-free region for $\zeta(s)$, showing that $\zeta(\sigma+it)$ has no zeros in the region $\sigma \geq 1-1 /\left(54.004(\log |t|)^{2 / 3}(\log \log |t|)^{1 / 3}\right)$ for $|t| \geq 3$ and asymptotically in the region $\sigma \geq 1-1 /\left(48.0718(\log |t|)^{2 / 3}(\log \log |t|)^{1 / 3}\right)$ for $|t|$ sufficiently large.

Abstract:In this article, we improve on two explicit bounds of order $\log t$ for $\sigma$ close to $1$: $|\zeta'(\sigma +it)/\zeta(\sigma +it)|$ and $|1/\zeta(\sigma +it)|$. Our method provides marked improvements in the constants, especially with regards to the latter. These savings come from replacing a lemma of Borel and Carathédory, with a Jensen-type one of Heath-Brown's. Using an argument involving the trigonometric polynomial, we additionally provide a slight asymptotic improvement: $1/\zeta(\sigma +it) \ll (\log t)^{11/12}$.

Abstract:The Zero-free regions of the Riemann zeta function play a pivotal role in understanding the distribution of prime numbers. These regions are often established using specific trigonometric polynomials and associated functionals. In this paper, we revisit the exact values of the infimum $V_n$ of a particular functional $v(f)$ over the set $C_n$ of cosine polynomials with nonnegative coefficients satisfying certain conditions, for $n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6$. By refining previous methods and classifying the polynomials based on the location of their roots, we provide improved calculations of $V_n$ for these values of $n$. Additionally, we extend our techniques to determine the exact values of $V_n$ for $n = 7, 8$, which were previously unknown. Our findings yield tighter bounds for the constant $R$ in the classical zero-free region $\sigma > 1 - \frac{1}{R \log |t|}$, thereby enhancing our comprehension of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function and contributing to advancements in analytic number theory and prime number theory.

On Littlewood's estimate for the modulus of the zeta function on the critical line

Abstract:Inspired by a result of Soundararajan, assuming the Riemann hypothesis (RH), we prove a new inequality for the logarithm of the modulus of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line in terms of a Dirichlet polynomial over primes and prime powers. Our proof uses the Guinand-Weil explicit formula in conjunction with extremal one-sided bandlimited approximations for the Poisson kernel. As an application, by carefully estimating the Dirichlet polynomial, we revisit a 100-year-old estimate of Littlewood and give a slight refinement of the sharpest known upper bound (due to Chandee and Soundararajan) for the modulus of the zeta function on the critical line assuming RH, by providing explicit lower-order terms.

Abstract:We present several new inequalities for trigonometric sums. Among others, we show that the inequality $$ \sum_{k=1}^n (n-k+1)(n-k+2)k\sin(kx) > \frac{2}{9} \sin(x) \bigl( 1+2\cos(x) \bigr)^2 $$ holds for all $n\geq 1$ and $x\in (0, 2\pi/3)$. The constant factor $2/9$ is sharp. This refines the classical Szegö-Schweitzer inequality which states that the sine sum is positive for all $n\geq 1$ and $x\in (0,2 \pi/3)$. Moreover, as an application of one of our results, we obtain a two-parameter class of absolutely monotonic functions.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to give a relatively simple proof of some known zero density estimates for Riemann zeta function which are sufficiently strong to break the density hypothesis in a nontrivial part of the critical strip. Apart from a simple but ingenious idea of Halasz the proof uses only classical knowledge about the zeta function, results known since at least hundred years.

Abstract:In a recent paper Vinay, Shweta, and Harshitha use Ramanujan's theta functions to prove several trigonometric equalities. Elementary proofs for some of these equalities were given by the author and Zeilberger, then for all but one by Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu. The remaining equality was proved in the same paper of Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu in a non-totally elementary way, in that it uses a result of Gauss in cyclotomy: here we give an elementary proof of the same equality. Also we show how to use automated tools to discover and prove some generalizations.

Abstract:We give bounds on the error in the asymptotic approximation of the log-Gamma function $\ln\Gamma(z)$ for complex $z$ in the right half-plane. These improve on earlier bounds by Behnke and Sommer (1962), Spira (1971), and Hare (1997). We show that $|R_{k+1}(z)/T_k(z)| < \sqrt{\pi k}$ for nonzero $z$ in the right half-plane, where $T_k(z)$ is the $k$-th term in the asymptotic series, and $R_{k+1}(z)$ is the error incurred in truncating the series after $k$ terms. If $k \le |z|$, then the stronger bound $|R_{k+1}(z)/T_k(z)| < (k/|z|)^2/(\pi^2-1) < 0.113$ holds. Similarly for the asymptotic approximation of $\ln\Gamma(z+\frac{1}{2})$, except that a factor $\eta_k = 1/(1-2^{1-2k})$ multiplies some of the bounds. We deduce similar bounds for asymptotic approximation of the Riemann-Siegel theta function $\vartheta(t)$. We show that the accuracy of a well-known approximation to $\vartheta(t)$ can be improved by including an exponentially small term in the approximation. This improves the attainable accuracy for real $t>0$ from $O(\exp(-\pi t))$ to $O(\exp(-2\pi t))$. We discuss a similar example due to Olver (1964), and a connection with the Stokes phenomenon.

The same result with explicit constants under the Riemann Hypothesis has been obtained by Conrey and Turnage‐Butterbaugh using a different method. We explain how to obtain explicit constants under the Riemann Hypothesis using our approach which is based on Selberg's and Tsang's arguments.

An effective Linear Independence conjecture for the zeros of the Riemann zeta function and applications

Abstract:Using the same heuristic argument leading to the Lang-Waldschmidt Conjecture in the theory of linear forms in logarithms, we formulate an effective version of the Linear Independence conjecture for the ordinates of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. Then assuming this conjecture, we obtain Omega results for the error term in the prime number theorem, which are conjectured to be best possible by Montgomery. This was claimed to appear in Monach's thesis by Montgomery and Vaughan in their classical book, but such a result or its proof is nowhere to be found in this thesis or in the litterature. Moreover, if in addition to this effective Linear Independence conjecture we assume a conjecture of Gonek and Hejhal on the negative moments of the derivative of the Riemann zeta function, we can show that the summatory function of the Möbius function $M(x)$ is $\Omega_{\pm}\left(\sqrt{x}(\log\log\log x)^{5/4}\right)$. This conditionally resolves a part of a conjecture of Gonek.

Abstract:We refine a previous work of K. Matsumoto and H. Ishikawa, obtaining an asymptotic formula for the mean square of the product of the Riemann zeta-function and a Dirichlet polynomial in the critical strip (1/4<$\sigma$<1/2), by obtaining an explicit formula of Atkinson type for its error term. This work is closely related to the generalized Dirichlet divisor problem. The form of these formulas is akin to, yet more complex than, Voronoi's formulas in the divisor problem.

Abstract:In these lectures we first review the important properties of the Riemann $\zeta$-function that are necessary to understand the nature and importance of the Riemann hypothesis (RH). In particular this first part describes the analytic continuation, the functional equation, trivial zeros, the Euler product formula, Riemann's main result relating the zeros on the critical strip to the distribution of primes, the exact counting formula for the number of zeros on the strip $N(T)$, and the GUE statistics of the zeros on the critical line. We then turn to presenting some new results obtained in the past year and describe several strategies towards proving the RH. First we describe an electrostatic analogy and argue that if the electric potential along the line $\Re (z) =1$ is a regular alternating function, the RH would follow. The main new result is that the zeros on the critical line are in one-to-one correspondence with the zeros of the cosine function, and this leads to a transcendental equation for the $n$-th zero on the critical line that depends only on $n$. If there is a unique solution to this equation for every $n$, denoting $N_0 (T)$ the number of zeros on the critical line, then $N_0(T) = N(T)$, i.e. all zeros are on the critical line. These results are generalized to two infinite classes of functions, Dirichlet $L$-functions and $L$-functions based on modular forms. We present extensive numerical analysis of the solutions of these equations. We apply these methods to the Davenport-Heilbronn $L$-function, which is known to have zeros off of the line, and explain why the RH fails in this case. We also present a new approximation to the $\zeta$-function that is analogous to the Stirling approximation to the $\Gamma$-function. In this updated version we added references to subsequent publications that made progress on open questions posed in the previous version from 10 years ago.

Abstract:This paper begins with a re-examination of the Riemann-Siegel Integral, which first discovered amongst by Bessel-Hagen in 1926 and expanded upon by C. L. Siegel on his 1932 account of Riemanns unpublished work on the zeta function. By application of standard asymptotic methods for integral estimation, and the use of certain approximations pertaining to special functions, it proves possible to derive a new zeta-sum for the Hardy function Z(t). In itself this new zeta-sum (whose terms made up of elementary functions, but are unlike those that arise from the analytic continuation of the Dirichlet series) proves to be a computationally inefficient method for calculation of Z(t). However, by further, independent analysis, it proves possible to correlate the terms the new zeta-sum with the terms of the Riemann-Siegel formula, thought, since its discovery by Siegel, to be the most efficient means of calculating Z(t). Closer examination of this correlation reveals that is possible to formulate a hybrid asymptotic formula for Z(t) consisting of a sum containing both Riemann-Siegel terms and terms from the new zeta-sum, in such a way as to reduce the overall CPU time required by a factor between 14-15 percent. Alongside the obvious computational benefits of such a result, the very existence of the new zeta-sum itself highlights new theoretical avenues of study in this field.

Abstract:In this article, we extend the result of Conrey [5, Theorem 2] to shorter intervals for higher-order derivatives of the zeta function. That is we study the mean value of the product of two finite order derivatives of the zeta function multiplied by a mollifier in short intervals. In this process, we obtain better mollifier length in some short intervals compared to the length of mollifier implied by Conrey's result. These finer studies allow us to refine the error term of some classical results of Levinson and Montgomery [13], Ki and Lee [11] on zero density estimates of $\zeta^{(k)}$.
