Abstract:On 25 March 1935 John Tate, the then editor of Physical Review, received a paper that had co-authored with Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen, his younger colleagues at Princeton. The logbooks of Physical Review show that the EPR paper, as it has since become known, bypassed the refereeing process and went straight to press. Four printed pages of beautifully constructed argument appeared in the 15 May issue. They were heralded by a brief article in the New York Times titled Einstein attacks quantum theory. And so he did.

Abstract:In 1965 the Nobel Foundation honored Sin-Itiro Tomonaga, Julian Schwinger, and Richard Feynman for their fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics and the consequences for the physics of elementary particles. In contrast to both of his colleagues only Richard Feynman appeared as a genius before the public. In his autobiographies he managed to connect his behavior, which contradicted several social and scientific norms, with the American myth of the "practical man". This connection led to the image of a common American with extraordinary scientific abilities and contributed extensively to enhance the image of Feynman as genius in the public opinion. Is this image resulting from Feynman's autobiographies in accordance with historical facts? This question is the starting point for a deeper historical analysis that tries to put Feynman and his actions back into historical context. The image of a "genius" appears then as a construct resulting from the public reception of brilliant scientific research.

Abstract:The advent and dominance of social media in our daily lives is not a matter of discussion, and very few minimalistic individuals have tried to decrease this technological dependency, which can become toxic and noxious for the development of an autonomous personality and free thinking. Academic faculties claim a depauperation in terms of their freedom but are also not free from duties, responsibilities, and obligations. Here, duties, responsibilities, obligations, and freedom are addressed in historical terms as the university as an institution developed over the centuries after its founding in the 11th century is currently under attack. We premonish that these concepts must still be reiterated and divulgated to students and fellows in academia. Galilei's "Eppur si muove" ("and yet it moves") are the words pronounced by the Italian mathematician, physicist, and philosopher Galileo Galilei that should resonate in censorship bodies now and in the future.

Abstract:A recent essay [1] reminds us of how richly Boltzmann deserves to be admiringly commemorated for the originality of his ideas on the occasion of his 150th birthday. Without any doubt, the scientific community owes Boltzmann a great debt of gratitude for his ingenious and pathfinding contributions. However, the essay chooses to illustrate this important memorial by statements and inferences that perhaps are questionable today even to Boltzmann himself. I will comment only on three issues.

Abstract:It is reasonable to affirm that madness is inborn with the human spirit and that only in lunacy it is possible to be creative, being the intellect a system of rules that make possible to live with the least conflict possible, as masterfully said by Umberto Galimberti. To understand madness we must glean our lunacy and put aside the reason which relates to the non contradiction principle thus being not capable to comprehend madness that does not respond to the rational principles, whereas as Schopenhauer says, is the essence and the strength of the will to live.

Abstract:In Europe (e.g., in Italy), and in the States, the opinion is widely spreading that the negative consequences of modern progress are the fault of "Science". A lively debate on this topic took place among the famous writer Leonardo Sciascia and Italian physicists like Edoardo Amaldi and Emilio Segre', when Sciascia wrote his known book about the disappearance of Ettore Majorana, a book that presented Majorana (a very reserved theoretical physicist) as an example of the scientist that keeps his discoveries secret when afraid of possible evil applications. We wish to contribute now to such a question, since many special meetings did recently return to it, while celebrating the centenary of Majorana's birth (2006), or 30 years (2005) from Sciascia's book publication. It appeared natural to us to start with the figure of Einstein, who, even if extremely peaceable, supported the atomic bomb construction by his letter to Roosvelt. We discuss first the significance of part of Einsteins's scientific work (which flourished in particular one century ago): We seize this opportunity for presenting a derivation of the "twins paradox", so simple that it has been taught to Senior High School last-year students or University undergraduate students; all the present work, more in general, is addressed mainly to them. In the second part of this paper, we analyse the general meaning of Einstein's contributions to philosophy and pedagogy. The third part is entirely devoted to our main subject, i.e., to discussing the "Responsibility of the Intellectuals". The reader interested chiefly in this last part, can find it re-expounded in a self-contained way in the Appendix. More information in the Contents of this article.

Abstract:Abstract This article is an afterword to the book Rise of the Self-Replicators: Early Visions of Machines, AI and Robots That Can Reproduce and Evolve, coauthored by Tim Taylor and Alan Dorin (2020). The book covered the early history of thought about self-reproducing and evolving machines, from initial speculations in the 17th century up to the early 1960s (from which point onward the more recent history is already well covered elsewhere). This article supplements the material discussed in the book by presenting several relevant sources that have come to the author’s attention since the book was published. The most significant additions to the history are from the German-born, 19th-century inventor and utopian John Adolphus Etzler in the 1830s–1840s, the Hungarian author and satirist Frigyes Karinthy in 1916, and the U.S. mathematician and computer scientist Fred Stahl in 1960.

The Peculiar Destiny of Sentiment de Monsieur Leibnitz (May 1705 -- March 1706)

Abstract:During the querelle des infiniment petits, Leibniz wrote several texts to justify using Differential calculus among Parisian savants. However, only three were published. Among these publications, ''Sentiment de Monsieur Leibnitz'' had a peculiar destiny. Although we are aware of the manuscript (Gotha FB A 448--449, Bl. 41--42), it is only recently that we have identified a copy of its impression in the British Library catalogue. This copy was printed in 1706 together with writings by other mathematicians united in the defence of the new calculus -- Joseph Saurin, Jacob Hermann and the Bernoulli brothers. Recently published epistolary exchanges indicate that Jean-Paul Bignon, at the time director of the Royal Academy of Sciences, in order to calm down the institution, had prohibited this publication and confiscated the prints.This article examine the epistemological and institutional issues at stake in ''Sentiment de Monsieur Leibnitz''.

Abstract:Childhood and Schooldays: Albert Einstein, and the family members seemed to have exaggerated the story of Albert who developed slowly, learned to talk late, and whose parents thought he was abnormal. These and other stories were adopted by biographers as if they really happened in the form that Albert and his sister told them. Hence biographers were inspired by them to create a mythical public image of Albert Einstein. Albert had tendency toward temper tantrums, the young impudent rebel Einstein had an impulsive and upright nature. He rebelled against authority and refused to learn by rote. He could not easily bring himself to study what did not interest him at school, especially humanistic subjects. And so his sister told the story that his Greek professor, to whom he once submitted an especially poor paper, went so far in his anger to declare that nothing would ever become of him. Albert learned subjects in advance when it came to sciences; and during the vacation of a few months from school, Albert independently worked his way through the entire prospective Gymnasium syllabus. He also taught himself natural science, geometry and philosophy by reading books that he obtained from a poor Jewish medical student of Polish nationality, Max Talmud, and from his uncle Jacob Einstein.

Abstract:Annotated parallel text in Latin and English of the paper of Adam Adamandy Kochański "Solutio Theorematum Ab illustri Viro in Actis hujus Anni Mense Januario, pag. 28. propositorum", Acta Eruditorum, Lipsiae 1682, pp. 230-236, in which he presented solutions of two geometric problems proposed by an anonymous author in the same journal in January 1682. The Latin text of "Solutio theorematum" presented here closely follows the original text published in "Acta Eruditorum". Punctuation, capitalization, and mathematical notation have been preserved. Several misprints which appeared in the original are also reproduced unchanged, but with a footnote indicating correction. Every effort has been made to preserve the layout of original tables. The translation is as faithful as possible, often literal, and it is mainly intended to be of help to those who wish to study the original Latin text. In the appendix, all propositions from Euclid's "Elements" mentioned in the text are listed in both Latin and English.

Abstract:Starting with two statements made by two great artists and witnesses of the XXth century - Joseph Brodsky and the Polish poet, Tadeusz Rozewicz - the author discusses the roots of our current moral crisis to which we ourselves bear witness: in the unchecked population explosion (Brodsky), and in the sinister legacy of World War II, the effects of which we witness on a daily basis (Rozewicz). The author recalls a third witness: Czeslaw Milosz, who wrote that the world's progress exhibits an inevitable tendency toward nihilism. In his discourse with the three statements mentioned, the author refers to certain XXth century intellectuals - Ortega y Gasset, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Mircea Eliade, Herbert Read - who confirm and develop the thesis of man s spiritual fall and rejection of transcendence through technology. The author further illustrates his thesis with examples taken from the scientific research concerning IT, cloning, euthanasia, as well as from the world of the arts from the apocalyptic works of Hieronymous Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder to the latest performers. He invokes a worldview which, by rejecting the metaphysics of man s birth, aging, and death, also rejects the judeo-christian taboo of the human body as a "dwelling place for the spirit" (porno festivals, exhibitions of human corpses by Prof. von Hagens in Germany).
