Abstract:Newton's identities provide a way to express elementary symmetric polynomials in terms of power polynomials over fields of characteristic zero. In this article, we study the failure of this relation in positive characteristic and what can be recovered. In particular, we show how one can write the elementary symmetric polynomials as rational functions in the power polynomials over any commutative unital ring.

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:In this paper, we study arithmetic dynamics in arbitrary characteristic, in particular in positive characteristic. We generalise some basic facts on arithmetic degree and canonical height in positive characteristic. As applications, we prove the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces of positive entropy, the Zariski dense orbit conjecture for automorphisms of projective surfaces and for endomorphisms of projective varieties with large first dynamical degree. We also study ergodic theory for constructible topology. For example, we prove the equidistribution of backward orbits for finite flat endomorphisms with large topological degree. As applications, we give a simple proof for weak dynamical Mordell-Lang and prove a counting result for backward orbits without multiplicities. This gives some applications for equidistributions on Berkovich spaces.

Abstract:Updated version. Includes comments on the advances in the field from the Kyoto workshop on Resolution of Singularities in Positive Characteristic, December 2008. The article surveys the theory of kangaroo points as they appear in the resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. They represent one of the main obstructions for transcribing the characteristic zero proof of resolution to positive characteristic. Kangaroo points are classified through the concept of oblique polynomials. The results of the article are used in Hironaka's recent program towards the resolution of singularities in positive characteristic.

Abstract:In this article, we characterize the image of the Brylinski-Radon transform in characteristic $p>0$ via Beilinson's theory of singular supports. We also provide an alternate proof of Brylinski's results over $\mathbb{C}$, which also works for sheaves with finite coefficients. Along the way, we also obtain a microlocal criterion for the descent of perverse sheaves which could be of independent interest.

Abstract:We aim in this manuscript to describe a specific notion of geometric positivity that manifests in cohomology rings associated to the flag variety $G/B$ and, in some cases, to subvarieties of $G/B$. We offer an exposition on the the well-known geometric basis of the homology of $G/B$ provided by Schubert varieties, whose dual basis in cohomology has nonnegative structure constants. In recent work [22] we showed that the equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties satisfies a positivity phenomenon similar to that for Schubert calculus for $G/B$. Here we explain how this positivity extends to this particular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, and offer some open questions about the ingredients for extending positivity results to other Hessenberg varieties.

Abstract:We prove the Demailly--Peternell--Schneider conjecture in positive characteristic: if $X$ is a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ with $-K_X$ is nef, then the Albanese morphism $a: X \to A$ is surjective. We also show strengthenings either allowing mild singularities for $X$, or proving more special properties of $a$. The above statement for compact Kähler manifolds was conjectured originally by Demailly, Peternell and Schneider in 1993, and for smooth projective varieties of characteristic zero it was shown by Zhang in 1996. In positive characteristic, all earlier results involved tameness assumptions either on cohomology or on the singularities of the general fibers of $a$. The main feature of the present article is the development of a technology to avoid such assumptions.

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to lay the foundations for a classification of isolated hypersurface singularities in positive characteristic. Although our article is in the spirit of Arnol'd who classified real an complex hypersurfaces in the 1970's with respect to right equivalence, several new phenomena occur in positive characteristic. Already the notion of isolated singularity is different for right resp. contact equivalence over fields of characteristic other than zero. The heart of this paper consists of the study of different notions of non-degeneracy and the associated piecewise filtrations induced by the Newton diagram of a power series f. We introduce the conditions AC and AAC which modify and generalise the conditions A and AA of Arnol'd resp. Wall and which allow the classification with respect to contact equivalence in any characteristic. Using this we deduce normal forms and rather sharp determinacy bounds for f with respect to right and contact equivalence. We apply this to classify hypersurface singularities of low modality in positive characteristic.

Abstract:A $\mathbf{GL}$-variety is a (typically infinite dimensional) variety modeled on the polynomial representation theory of the general linear group. In previous work, we studied these varieties in characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain results in positive characteristic: for example, we prove a version of Chevalley's theorem on constructible sets. We give an application of our theory to strength of polynomials.

Abstract:We prove a microlocal characterisation of character sheaves on a reductive Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of sufficiently large positive characteristic: a perverse irreducible G-equivariant sheaf is a character sheaf if and only if it has nilpotent singular support and is quasi-admissible. We also present geometric proofs, in positive characteristic, of the equivalence between being admissible and being a character sheaf, and various characterisations of cuspidal sheaves, following the work of Mirković.

On Covering Radii in Function Fields

Abstract:In this paper, we shall discuss topics in geometry of numbers in the positive characteristic setting, such as covering radii. We find a closed form for covering radii with respect to convex bodies, which will lead to a proof of the positive characteristic analogue of Woods' conjecture in this setting. Then, we will prove a positive characteristic analogue of Minkowski's conjecture about the multiplicative covering radius. To do this, we shall prove a positive characteristic analogue of Solan's result that every diagonal orbit intersects the set of well rounded lattices. This implies that the Gruber-Mordell spectrum in positive characteristic is trivial in every dimension.

Hook-Shape Immanant Characters from Stanley-Stembridge Characters

Abstract:We consider the Schur-positivity of monomial immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices, in particular whether a non-negative coefficient of the trivial Schur function implies non-negative coefficients for other Schur functions in said immanants. We prove that this true for hook-shape Schur functions using combinatorial methods in a representation theory setting. Our main theorem proves that hook-shape immanant characters can be written as finite non-negative integer sums of Stanley-Stembridge characters, and provides an explicit combinatorial formula for these sums. This resolves a special case of a longstanding conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge that posits such a sum exists for all immanant characters. We also provide several simplifications for computing immanant characters, and several corollaries applying the main result to cases where the coefficient of the trivial Schur function in monomial immanants of Jacobi-Trudi matrices is known to be non-negative.
