Abstract:This invited memoir looks back on my scientific career that straddles the solar and stellar branches of astrophysics, with sprinklings of historical context and personal opinion. Except for a description of my life up to my Ph.D. phase, the structure is thematic rather than purely chronological, focusing on those topics that I worked on throughout substantial parts of my life: stars like the Sun and the Sun-as-a-star, surface field evolution, coronal structure and dynamics, heliophysics education, and space weather. Luck and a broadly inquisitive frame of mind shaped a fortunate life on two continents, taking me from one amazing mentor, colleague, and friend to another, working in stimulating settings to interpret data from state-of-the-art space observatories.

The nature and results of collaborations with key people from abroad and with students is mentioned at length. Finally, other important aspects of my life are mentioned briefly before wrapping up.

Abstract:This review provides a brief account of the life of Eugene Parker (1927-2022) and discusses his contributions to plasma astrophysics. Growing up in Michigan, he went to graduate school at Caltech and then worked at the University of Utah before shifting to the University of Chicago, where he spent the rest of his illustrious career. Parker's most important scientific works are discussed in the context of the historical development of plasma astrophysics. In the study of the Sun, he made enormous contributions both to the MHD of the solar convection zone (including the formulation of turbulent dynamo theory) and to the understanding of the outer solar atmosphere (including the theory of coronal heating and the prediction of the solar wind). Parker's non-solar contributions include the Parker instability in the interstellar gas and the Parker limit of magnetic monopoles. We also try to convey an idea of Parker's highly individualistic personality and his very unique way of doing science.

Abstract:Several phenomena connected with the magnetic field of the Sun (the cool sunspots, the hot corona, solar flares, the solar wind) are collectively known as solar activity. This paper discusses how one uses the MHD equations to understand how the magnetic field of the Sun is produced by the dynamo process and then gives rise to these diverse activities, making the Sun the best laboratory for plasma physics in the limit of high magnetic Reynolds number (defined at the end of the Introduction).

A glimpse into the student life of Rudolph Peierls, when he was 18{22 years old, gives us a °avor of happenings during the birth of quantum mechanics and how one started understanding properties of matter such as a metal and a semiconductor, using the newly found quantum mechanics. It also shows how a bright young mind could get nurtured and shaped when placed in a proper environment. Peierls, during his college days, had the opportunity to work closely with three great physicists, Sommerfeld, Heisenberg and Pauli, in succession spending one year with each. This experience had its e®ect { Peierls's discovery of hole theory of electrical conduction in solids, formulation of the theory of thermal conduction in solids, analysis of anharmonic interactions and discovery of Umklapp process. It is also interesting that the academic load was far from a burden and was ̄lled with weekend activities and summer vacations involving sailing, skiing, hiking and concerts.

Abstract:The paper provides a review of A.M. Mathai's applications of the theory of special functions, particularly generalized hypergeometric functions, to problems in stellar physics and formation of structure in the Universe and to questions related to reaction, diffusion, and reaction-diffusion models. The essay also highlights Mathai's recent work on entropic, distributional, and differential pathways to basic concepts in statistical mechanics, making use of his earlier research results in information and statistical distribution theory. The results presented in the essay cover a period of time in Mathai's research from 1982 to 2008 and are all related to the thematic area of the gravitationally stabilized solar fusion reactor and fractional reaction-diffusion, taking into account concepts of non-extensive statistical mechanics. The time period referred to above coincides also with Mathai's exceptional contributions to the establishment and operation of the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, India, as well as the holding of the United Nations (UN)/European Space Agency (ESA)/National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States/ Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Workshops on basic space science and the International Heliophysical Year 2007, around the world. Professor Mathai's contributions to the latter, since 1991, are a testimony for his social conscience applied to international scientific activity.

Abstract:The Sun has been observed through a telescope for four centuries. However, its study made a prodigious leap at the end of the nineteenth century with the appearance of photography and spectroscopy, then at the beginning of the following century with the invention of the coronagraph and monochromatic filters, and finally in the second half of the twentieth century with the advent of space exploration (satellites, probes). This makes it possible to observe the radiations hidden by the Earth's atmosphere (Ultra Violet, X-rays, $\gamma$) and to carry out ''in situ'' measurements in the solar environment. This article retraces the major stages of this fantastic epic in which renowned scientists such as Janssen, Deslandres, d'Azambuja, Lyot and Dollfus entered the scene, giving the Paris-Meudon Observatory a pioneering role in the history of solar physics until 1960. After this golden age, space exploration required large resources shared between nations, which could no longer be implemented within teams or even individual institutes. The development of numerical simulation, a new research tool, also required the pooling of supercomputers.
