Abstract:Journal of Asian and African Studies, Ahead of Print. This paper documents the traditional agricultural practices of Chuktia Bhunjia tribe of Odisha, India, and attempts to comprehend as to how they negotiate with their ecosystem in order to ensure sustainable agricultural production and livelihood. Data, collected using interview and observation, reveal that agricultural practices of the Chuktia Bhunjia are revolved around local ecology, beliefs, rituals and knowledge. The knowledge-based intercropping, agroforestry, crop rotation, crop diversity, rain-water harvesting and management of soil fertility are important domains involved in their agricultural practices that are found to as a function of long-term observation and experiments, and are reported to have been culturally reproduced through self-engagement and ritualistic practices associated with agriculture. Their agriculture is assumed to have significance in maintaining the soil fertility and moisture, and reducing greenhouse gases and enhancing carbon sequestration whereby to balance the landscape. The agroforestry-based agricultural practices, coupled with belief, ritual and technology, is also found to make their agriculture cost-effective and ensure conservation of ecological system. Climate change–driven agricultural decision-making among them is found to as a tool not only to arrest their crop failure but also to ensure sustainable food production and livelihood. Yet, the expected evacuation of inhabitant including Chuktia Bhunjia due to 'tiger-project' is assumed to be a threat to their agricultural knowledge and other cultural domains. Therefore, owing to the livelihood implication of traditional agriculture, any attempt to integrate their agricultural knowledge base with scientific knowledge would ensure sustainability of both ecology and livelihood together.

Abstract:Cholanaikkans are a diminishing tribe of India. With a population of less than 200 members, this tribe living in the reserved forests about 80 km from Kozhikode, it is one of the most isolated tribes. A programme of the Government of Kerala brings some of them to Kozhikode once a year. We studied various aspects of the tribe during such a visit in 2016. We report their science and technology.

Abstract:This is a concise review, addressed to undergraduate students, of S. Chandrasekhar's oeuvre in astrophysics, ranging from his early studies on white dwarfs using relativistic quantum statistics to topics as diverse as dynamical friction, negative hydrogen ion, fluid dynamical instabilities, black holes and gravitational waves. The exposition is based on simple physical explanations in the context of observational astronomy. Black holes and their role as central engines of active, compact, high energy sources have been discussed.

Abstract:<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://G.V.Juggarow" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> was one of the early pioneers of observational astronomy in India who built his own observatory in 1840 at Vizagapatnam. His legacy was continued by his son-in-law <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://A.V.Nursing" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> Row till 1892, his daughter till 1894, Madras Government till 1898, and his grandson till it became inactive in early 1900s. Observations of comets, planetary transits, stellar occultations etc have been continued along with meteorological observations. Celestial photography was also started at the observatory. After 1898 the observatory's activities were re-oriented towards meteorology. The establishment of the observatory, the personalities involved and the final closing of the institution are described here.

Abstract:IN these 160 pages, the author has endeavoured with success to bring before his readers, in as simple a way as is consistent with the subject, the elements of spherical astronomy. With the exception of a small knowledge of the rudiments of the differential calculus, the mathematical ability is by no means taxed. The order in which the subject-matter has been arranged, and the field which is covered, can be gathered from the following short summary. After dealing first with the sphere generally, and the form and daily motion of the earth, the annual motion round the sun, and the methods of the transformation of coordinates, the measurement of time is next explained, in which Kepler's equation, the equation of time, and the transformation of mean into sidereal time, and vice versâ, are discussed. Then follows a chapter in which the movements of the moon are clearly expounded.

This survey has resulted in the first arcsecond-resolution X-ray panorama of high-energy objects and their interaction with the unique environment of the center region. Abstract:The Gond community is considered to be one of the most ancient tribes of India with a continuing history of several thousand years. They are also known for their largely isolated history which they have retained through the millennia. Several of their intellectual traditions therefore are a record of parallel aspects of human intellectual growth, and still preserve their original flavour and have not been homogenised by the later traditions of India. In view of this, the Gonds provide a special window to the different currents that constitute contemporary India. In the present study, we summarise their mythology, genetics and script. We then investigate their astronomical traditions and try to understand this community through a survey of 15 Gond villages spread over Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. We show that they have a distinctly different view of the sky from the conventional astronomical ideas encountered elsewhere in India, which is both interesting and informative. We briefly comment on other aspects of their life as culled from our encounters with different members of the Gond community.

Abstract:X-ray astronomy is a mature area of observational astronomy. After the discovery of the first non-solar X-ray source in 1962, X-ray astronomy proliferated during the Apollo era's space race. Then, it matured as an established area of research during the period of Great Observatories, and now it has become an indispensable tool to understand a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena. Consequently, in recent times, niche observational areas in X-ray astronomy have been explored, and attempts have been made to expand the sensitivity of observations vastly. India was an active partner in the growth of X-ray astronomy. In the initial years, India leveraged its expertise in balloon technology to get significant results in the research area of hard X-ray astronomy. During the rapid growth phase of X-ray astronomy, India made divergent all-round efforts. Later on, however, the technical expertise available in India was insufficient to compete with the highly sophisticated satellite experiments from around the world. During this phase, work in X-ray astronomy continued in a few low-key experiments, eventually resulting in the launch of India's first multi-wavelength astronomical satellite, AstroSat, in 2015. In this article, I will trace the journey of X-ray astronomy and the developments in the Indian context. I will also explore the sociological aspects of the growth of X-ray astronomy, and, in the end, I will present a speculative sketch of the future of X-ray astronomy with an emphasis on the Indian contribution.
