Abstract:Pranab Kumar Sen was born on November 7, 1937 in Calcutta, India. His father died when Pranab was 10 years old, so his mother raised the family of seven children. Given his superior performance on an exam, Pranab nearly went into medical school, but did not because he was underage. He received a <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://B.Sc" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. degree in 1955 and an <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://M.Sc" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. degree in 1957 in statistics from Calcutta University, topping the class both times. Dr. Sen's dissertation on order statistics and nonparametrics, under the direction of Professor Hari Kinkar Nandi, was completed in 1961. After teaching for three years at Calcutta University, 1961--1964, Professor Sen came to Berkeley as a Visiting Assistant Professor in 1964. In 1965, he joined the Departments of Statistics and Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has remained. Professor Sen's pioneering contributions have touched nearly every area of statistics. He is the first person who, in joint collaboration with Professor S. K. Chatterjee, developed multivariate rank tests as well as time-sequential nonparametric methods. He is also the first person who carried out in-depth research in sequential nonparametrics culminating in his now famous Wiley book Sequential Nonparametrics: Invariance Principles and Statistical Inference and SIAM monograph. Professor Sen has over 600 research publications. In addition, he has authored or co-authored 11 books and monographs, and has edited or co-edited 11 more volumes. He has supervised over 80 Ph.D. students, many of whom have achieved distinction both nationally and internationally. Professor Sen is the founding co-editor of two international journals: Sequential Analysis and Statistics and Decisions.

Abstract:Thanu Padmanabhan was a renowned Indian theoretical physicist known for his research in general relativity, cosmology, and quantum gravity. In an extraordinary career spanning forty-two years, he published more than three hundred research articles, wrote ten highly successful technical and popular books, and mentored nearly thirty graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. He is best known for his deep work investigating gravitation as an emergent thermodynamic phenomenon. He was an outstanding teacher, and an indefatigable populariser of science, who travelled very widely to motivate and inspire young students. Paddy, as he was affectionately known, was also a close friend to his students and collaborators, treating them as part of his extended academic family. On September 17, 2021 Paddy passed away very unexpectedly, at the age of sixty-four and at the height of his research career, while serving as a Distinguished Professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune. His untimely demise has come as a shock to his family and friends and colleagues. In this article, several of them have come together to pay their tributes and share their fond memories of Paddy.

Abstract:Abstract Priyanath Mukhopadhyay (also referred to as PM subsequently) enjoyed an extraordinary career in the colonial police force in Calcutta, where he served as a detective from 1878 to 1911. In his later life, he wrote as a bhadralok and a detective—both important parts of his fashioned self-identity—using narratives of crime to showcase his rare professional expertise and his responsibilities as a cultured upholder of the law. Through an examination of Priyanath’s serialized police tales, it is possible to see how crime writing forged the values of respectability and civic sensibilities, and shaped the moral fiber of an urban society that appeared to be falling apart at its seams. Examining criminal activities in colonial Calcutta as recoverable from PM’s writings affords glimpses of a city being reordered by its material wealth, social aspirations, and moral attitudes. PM’s tales attempt to face this challenge by forging a moral authority in the finely calibrated colonial order. His readers too were evidently invested in it as they endorsed this stand with their purse, leading to soaring circulation figures. The middle classes of Calcutta emerge in these tales as part and parcel of Priyanath’s policing, providing neighborhood and community surveillance networks and backing up the efforts of their detective hero. PM wrote very much as a social commentator as well as a police officer, reaffirming traditional social and domestic values, and frowning upon transgression of class and gender boundaries. What also comes alive is the city itself—the spaces laid bare or concealed by crime—the writing providing access to different topographies of urban knowledge and information networks.

Abstract:The field of development studies owes a great debt to Amartya Sen. This paper reviews the strengths and weaknesses of Sen’s account of ‘development as freedom’. It considers how Sen has developed his arguments in terms of four key ‘spaces’: what he calls the space of economic or moral evaluation, and what I call the spaces of geography, culture and politics. If there are problematic areas in Sen’s work, they lie in his treatments of authoritarian rule, of the rights to difference of certain social groups, and of political power, and in the indeterminacy of some of his policy recommendations.

Abstract:This review provides a brief account of the life of Eugene Parker (1927-2022) and discusses his contributions to plasma astrophysics. Growing up in Michigan, he went to graduate school at Caltech and then worked at the University of Utah before shifting to the University of Chicago, where he spent the rest of his illustrious career. Parker's most important scientific works are discussed in the context of the historical development of plasma astrophysics. In the study of the Sun, he made enormous contributions both to the MHD of the solar convection zone (including the formulation of turbulent dynamo theory) and to the understanding of the outer solar atmosphere (including the theory of coronal heating and the prediction of the solar wind). Parker's non-solar contributions include the Parker instability in the interstellar gas and the Parker limit of magnetic monopoles. We also try to convey an idea of Parker's highly individualistic personality and his very unique way of doing science.

Abstract:The article begins with an obscure Bengali poem ‘Lenin’ published in 1924. Tracing the publication and its consequences, it explores the transmission of progressive ideas from Europe to Bengal, following the First World War and the Russian Revolution. Subsequently, the rise of fascism in Europe, and the Second World War marked a significant juncture in this trajectory, where the rhetoric of ‘peace’, championed during the years after the First World War, developed into a new relationship with popular struggles in Bengali progressive cultural practice.

A glimpse into the student life of Rudolph Peierls, when he was 18{22 years old, gives us a °avor of happenings during the birth of quantum mechanics and how one started understanding properties of matter such as a metal and a semiconductor, using the newly found quantum mechanics. It also shows how a bright young mind could get nurtured and shaped when placed in a proper environment. Peierls, during his college days, had the opportunity to work closely with three great physicists, Sommerfeld, Heisenberg and Pauli, in succession spending one year with each. This experience had its e®ect { Peierls's discovery of hole theory of electrical conduction in solids, formulation of the theory of thermal conduction in solids, analysis of anharmonic interactions and discovery of Umklapp process. It is also interesting that the academic load was far from a burden and was ̄lled with weekend activities and summer vacations involving sailing, skiing, hiking and concerts.

Abstract:The text is about the life and work of one of the most influential economists of the last century - Milton Friedman. The paper discusses some of Friedman's greatest contributions to economic theory and practice, starting with the earliest life of Milton Friedman, and the historical circumstances that were of decisive influence on his life. An analysis of several of Friedman's most significant works, written mainly in the years spent at the University of Chicago, examines Friedman's contribution to economic theory. Friedman's contribution to the reaffirmation of quantitative money theory and consumption analysis, controversial interpretation of the causes of the Great Depression, critique of the Phillips curve, with reference to the Keynesian-monetarist debate and Friedman's contribution to the methodology of economics are discussed. The last part of the paper presents the position on Friedman's socio-political influence on a global level. There is talk of Friedman's contribution to strengthening the concept of liberalism, affirmation of the ideas of the free market, individual freedom and personal integrity, while reducing the regulatory role of the state in the economy.

Personalities like Jim's make us still go on believing in the chances of the human species, whatever would be the foolish agitation of the world.

Abstract:On January 4, 2012, the centenary of Henri Poincar\'e's death, a colloquium was held in Nancy, France the subject of which was "Vers une biographie d'Henri Poincar\'e". Scholars discussed several approaches for writing a biography of Poincar\'e. In this paper I present a personal and scientific biographical sketch of Poincar\'e, which does not in any way reflect Poincar\'e's rich personality and immense activity in science: When Poincar\'e traveled to parts of Europe, Africa and America, his companions noticed that he knew well everything from statistics to history and curious customs and habits of peoples. He was almost teaching everything in science. He was so encyclopedic that he dealt with the outstanding questions in the different branches of physics and mathematics; he had altered whole fields of science such as non-Euclidean geometry, Arithmetic, celestial mechanics, thermodynamics and kinetic theory, optics, electrodynamics, Maxwell's theory, and other topics from the forefront of Fin de Si\`ecle physical science. It is interesting to note that as opposed to the prosperity of biographies and secondary papers studying the life and scientific contributions of Albert Einstein, one finds much less biographies and secondary sources discussing Poincar\'e's life and work. As opposed to Einstein, Poincar\'e was not a cultural icon. Beginning in 1920 Einstein became a myth and a world famous figure. Although Poincar\'e was so brilliant in mathematics, he mainly remained a famous mathematician within the professional circle of scientists. He published more papers than Einstein, performed research in many more branches of physics and mathematics, received more prizes on his studies, and was a member of more academies in the whole world. Despite this tremendous yield, Poincar\'e did not win the Nobel Prize.

Abstract:Bankimchandra was a stalwart in terms of his writings in the nineteenth-century Bengal. He was one of the pioneers of nationalism in India and a Hindu revivalist. Prior to the publication of his prose writings in the forms of novels, articles and essays, nationalism was not an Indian phenomenon. It had been imported from the West through English education. Such English education gave the Indians an exposure of utilitarianism and the ideologies of French Revolution. Bankimchandra’s political thought accords with the characteristic of utilitarianism and the ideologies of French revolution. He thought that like Europe the rise of India would be possible only with the help of nationalism. He was well aware that the rational element of English education, which is the basis of nationalism, independence and political liberty, could not solely revive Hindu society. There are certain differences between the European concept of nationalism and the Indian concept of nationalism. Bankim’s idea of nationalism or patriotism is based on the ideal of love for the well-being of all. His concept of nationalism took its shape in his revolutionary novel Anandamath. Both the novel and the song vandemātaram used in that novel played a crucial role in the nationalist movement in India. In this article, an attempt has been made to understand the concept of nationalism as found in Bankimchandra’s writings.
