Abstract:Ideas that are used in the design, development, and performance of concurrency control mechanisms have been summarized. The locking, time-stamp, optimistic-based mechanisms are included. The ideas of validation in the optimistic approach are presented in some detail. The degree of concurrency and classes of serializability for various algorithms have been presented. Questions that relate arrival rate of transactions with degree of concurrency and performance have been briefly presented. Finally, several useful ideas for increasing concurrency have been summarized. They include flexible transactions, adaptability, prewrites, multidimensional time stamps, and relaxation of two-phase locking.

Abstract:Concurrent computations resemble conversations. In a conversation, participants direct utterances at others and, as the conversation evolves, exploit the known common context to advance the conversation. Similarly, collaborating software components share knowledge with each other in order to make progress as a group towards a common goal. This dissertation studies concurrency from the perspective of cooperative knowledge-sharing, taking the conversational exchange of knowledge as a central concern in the design of concurrent programming languages. In doing so, it makes five contributions: 1. It develops the idea of a common dataspace as a medium for knowledge exchange among concurrent components, enabling a new approach to concurrent programming. While dataspaces loosely resemble both "fact spaces" from the world of Linda-style languages and Erlang's collaborative model, they significantly differ in many details. 2. It offers the first crisp formulation of cooperative, conversational knowledge-exchange as a mathematical model. 3. It describes two faithful implementations of the model for two quite different languages. 4. It proposes a completely novel suite of linguistic constructs for organizing the internal structure of individual actors in a conversational setting. The combination of dataspaces with these constructs is dubbed Syndicate. 5. It presents and analyzes evidence suggesting that the proposed techniques and constructs combine to simplify concurrent programming. The dataspace concept stands alone in its focus on representation and manipulation of conversational frames and conversational state and in its integral use of explicit epistemic knowledge. The design is particularly suited to integration of general-purpose I/O with otherwise-functional languages, but also applies to actor-like settings more generally.

Abstract:In this work, we present a family of operational semantics that gradually approximates the realistic program behaviors in the C/C++11 memory model. Each semantics in our framework is built by elaborating and combining two simple ingredients: viewfronts and operation buffers. Viewfronts allow us to express the spatial aspect of thread interaction, i.e., which values a thread can read, while operation buffers enable manipulation with the temporal execution aspect, i.e., determining the order in which the results of certain operations can be observed by concurrently running threads. Starting from a simple abstract state machine, through a series of gradual refinements of the abstract state, we capture such language aspects and synchronization primitives as release/acquire atomics, sequentially-consistent and non-atomic memory accesses, also providing a semantics for relaxed atomics, while avoiding the Out-of-Thin-Air problem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first formal and executable operational semantics of C11 capable of expressing all essential concurrent aspects of the standard. We illustrate our approach via a number of characteristic examples, relating the observed behaviors to those of standard litmus test programs from the literature. We provide an executable implementation of the semantics in PLT Redex, along with a number of implemented litmus tests and examples, and showcase our prototype on a large case study: randomized testing and debugging of a realistic Read-Copy-Update data structure.

Scenario-Based Proofs for Concurrent Objects [Extended Version]

Abstract:Concurrent objects form the foundation of many applications that exploit multicore architectures and their importance has lead to informal correctness arguments, as well as formal proof systems. Correctness arguments (as found in the distributed computing literature) give intuitive descriptions of a few canonical executions or "scenarios" often each with only a few threads, yet it remains unknown as to whether these intuitive arguments have a formal grounding and extend to arbitrary interleavings over unboundedly many threads. We present a novel proof technique for concurrent objects, based around identifying a small set of scenarios (representative, canonical interleavings), formalized as the commutativity quotient of a concurrent object. We next give an expression language for defining abstractions of the quotient in the form of regular or context-free languages that enable simple proofs of linearizability. These quotient expressions organize unbounded interleavings into a form more amenable to reasoning and make explicit the relationship between implementation-level contention/interference and ADT-level transitions. We evaluate our work on numerous non-trivial concurrent objects from the literature (including the Michael-Scott queue, Elimination stack, SLS reservation queue, RDCSS and Herlihy-Wing queue). We show that quotients capture the diverse features/complexities of these algorithms, can be used even when linearization points are not straight-forward, correspond to original authors' correctness arguments, and provide some new scenario-based arguments. Finally, we show that discovery of some object's quotients reduces to two-thread reasoning and give an implementation that can derive candidate quotients expressions from source code.

The Problem of Programming Language Concurrency Semantics

Abstract:Despite decades of research, we do not have a satisfactory concurrency semantics for any general-purpose programming language that aims to support concurrent systems code. The Java Memory Model has been shown to be unsound with respect to standard compiler optimisations, while the C/C++11 model is too weak, admitting undesirable thin-air executions.Our goal in this paper is to articulate this major open problem as clearly as is currently possible, showing how it arises from the combination of multiprocessor relaxed-memory behaviour and the desire to accommodate current compiler optimisations. We make several novel contributions that each shed some light on the problem, constraining the possible solutions and identifying new difficulties.First we give a positive result, proving in HOL4 that the existing axiomatic model for C/C++11 guarantees sequentially consistent semantics for simple race-free programs that do not use low-level atomics (DRF-SC, one of the core design goals). We then describe the thin-air problem and show that it cannot be solved, without restricting current compiler optimisations, using any per-candidate-execution condition in the style of the C/C++11 model. Thin-air executions were thought to be confined to programs using relaxed atomics, but we further show that they recur when one attempts to integrate the concurrency model with more of C, mixing atomic and nonatomic accesses, and that also breaks the DRF-SC result. We then describe a semantics based on an explicit operational construction of out-of-order execution, giving the desired behaviour for thin-air examples but exposing further difficulties with accommodating existing compiler optimisations. Finally, we show that there are major difficulties integrating concurrency semantics with the C/C++ notion of undefined behaviour.We hope thereby to stimulate and enable research on this key issue.
Interests, Difficulties, Sentiments, and Tool Usages of Concurrency Developers: A Large-Scale Study on Stack Overflow

Abstract:Context: Software developers are increasingly facing the challenges of writing code that is not only concurrent but also correct. Objective: To help these developers, it is necessary to understand concurrency topics they are interested in, their difficulty in finding answers for questions in these topics, their sentiment for these topics, and how they use concurrency tools and techniques to guarantee correctness. Method: We conduct a large-scale study on the entirety of Stack Overflow to understand interests, difficulties, sentiment, and tool usages of concurrency developers. We discuss the implications of our findings for the practice, research, and education of concurrent software development, and investigate the relation of our findings with the findings of the previous work. Results: A few findings of our study are: (1) questions that concurrency developers ask can be grouped into a hierarchy with 27 concurrency topics under 8 major categories, (2) thread safety is among the most popular concurrency topics and client-server concurrency is among the least popular, (3) irreproducible behavior is among the most difficult topics and memory consistency is among the least difficult, (4) data scraping is among the most positive concurrency topics and irreproducible behavior is among the most negative, (5) root cause identification has the most number of questions for usage of data race tools and alternative use has the least. Conclusion: The results of our study can not only help concurrency developers but also concurrency educators and researchers to better decide where to focus their efforts, by trading off one concurrency topic against another.

Abstract:Concurrency control with a reasonable granularity is one of open challenges in cooperative design systems. In this paper, a fine granular concurrency control mechanism is proposed to support simultaneous feature modifications during cooperative design activities. First, extend a de-centralized mutual exclusion agreement on a single critical section to a fully distributed concurrency control mechanism supporting multiple critical sections. Second, a feature-level concurrency control framework is devised for peer-to-peer cooperative design environments to ensure the consistency of replicated models after concurrent manipulations. Finally, a prototype of the proposed mechanism is realized on a real-time cooperative design environment consisting of two heterogeneous CAD systems, SolidWorks and Autodesk Mechanical Desktop.

Abstract:Step net bisimulation is a coinductive behavioral relation for finite Petri nets, which is a smooth generalization of the definition of standard step bisimulation \cite{NT84} on finite Petri nets. Its induced equivalence offers an alternative, much simpler characterization of causal-net bisimilarity \cite{G15,Gor22}, as it does not resort to any causality structure, and of structure-preserving bisimilarity \cite{G15}, as it does not require bijective mappings between related markings. We show that step net bisimilarity can be characterized logically by means of a suitable modal logic, called NML (acronym of net modal logic): two markings are step net bisimilar if and only if they satisfy the same NML formulae.

Adding Concurrency to Smart Contracts

Abstract:Modern cryptocurrency systems, such as Ethereum, permit complex financial transactions through scripts called smart contracts. These smart contracts are executed many, many times, always without real concurrency. First, all smart contracts are serially executed by miners before appending them to the blockchain. Later, those contracts are serially re-executed by validators to verify that the smart contracts were executed correctly by miners. Serial execution limits system throughput and fails to exploit today's concurrent multicore and cluster architectures. Nevertheless, serial execution appears to be required: contracts share state, and contract programming languages have a serial semantics. This paper presents a novel way to permit miners and validators to execute smart contracts in parallel, based on techniques adapted from software transactional memory. Miners execute smart contracts speculatively in parallel, allowing non-conflicting contracts to proceed concurrently, and "discovering" a serializable concurrent schedule for a block's transactions, This schedule is captured and encoded as a deterministic fork-join program used by validators to re-execute the miner's parallel schedule deterministically but concurrently. Smart contract benchmarks run on a JVM with ScalaSTM show that a speedup of of 1.33x can be obtained for miners and 1.69x for validators with just three concurrent threads.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore remarkable similarities between multi-transactional behaviors of smart contracts in cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum and classical problems of shared-memory concurrency. We examine two real-world examples from the Ethereum blockchain and analyzing how they are vulnerable to bugs that are closely reminiscent to those that often occur in traditional concurrent programs. We then elaborate on the relation between observable contract behaviors and well-studied concurrency topics, such as atomicity, interference, synchronization, and resource ownership. The described contracts-as-concurrent-objects analogy provides deeper understanding of potential threats for smart contracts, indicate better engineering practices, and enable applications of existing state-of-the-art formal verification techniques.

DGCC: A New Dependency Graph based Concurrency Control Protocol for Multicore Database Systems.

Abstract: Multicore CPUs and large memories are increasingly becoming the norm in modern computer systems. However, current database management systems (DBMSs) are generally ineffective in exploiting the parallelism of such systems. In particular, contention can lead to a dramatic fall in performance. In this paper, we propose a new concurrency control protocol called DGCC (Dependency Graph based Concurrency Control) that separates concurrency control from execution. DGCC builds dependency graphs for batched transactions before executing them. Using these graphs, contentions within the same batch of transactions are resolved before execution. As a result, the execution of the transactions does not need to deal with contention while maintaining full equivalence to that of serialized execution. This better exploits multicore hardware and achieves higher level of parallelism. To facilitate DGCC, we have also proposed a system architecture that does not have certain centralized control components yielding better scalability, as well as supports a more efficient recovery mechanism. Our extensive experimental study shows that DGCC achieves up to four times higher throughput compared to that of state-of-the-art concurrency control protocols for high contention workloads.

Abstract:We introduce negotiations, a model of concurrency close to Petri nets, with multiparty negotiation as primitive. We study the problems of soundness of negotiations and of, given a negotiation with possibly many steps, computing a summary, i.e., an equivalent one-step negotiation. We provide a complete set of reduction rules for sound, acyclic, weakly deterministic negotiations and show that, for deterministic negotiations, the rules compute the summary in polynomial time.

An Empirical Study on C++ Concurrency Constructs

Abstract:Nowadays concurrent programming is in large demand. The inherent support for concurrency is therefore increasingly important in programming languages. As for C++, an abundance of standard concurrency constructs have been supported since C++ 11. However, to date there is little work investigating how these constructs are actually used in developing real software. In this paper, we perform an empirical study to investigate the adoption of C++ concurrency constructs in open-source applications, with the goal to provide insightful information for practitioners to use concurrency constructs efficiently. To this end, we analyze 127 open-source applications that adopt C++ concurrency constructs, comprising 34 million lines of C++ code, to conduct the experiment. The experimental results show that: (1) to implement concurrency code, thread-based constructs are significantly more often used than atomics-based constructs and task-based constructs; (2) to manage synchronization, lock-based constructs are significantly more often used than lock-free constructs and blocking constructs; (3) among the key thread-based constructs and task-based constructs (i.e. mutex, promise, and future), there is not a construct significantly more commonly misused than others; (4) small-size applications introduce concurrency constructs more intensively and more quickly than medium-size applications and large-size applications; and (5) an increasing use of standard concurrency constructs does not result in a substantially decreasing use of unstandardized concurrency constructs. Based on these findings, we make actionable suggestions for language designers, developers, and novices to assist them in designing and using C++ concurrency constructs.

Abstract:In this article we extend the framework of execution of concurrent functions on different abstract levels from previous work with communication between the concurrent functions. We classify the communications and identify problems that can occur with these communications. We present solutions for the problems based on encapsulation and abstraction to obtain correct behaviours. The result is that communication on a low level of abstraction in the form of shared memory and message passing is dealt with on an higher level of abstraction.

Abstract:Termination is a central property in sequential programming models: a term is terminating if all its reduction sequences are finite. Termination is also important in concurrency in general, and for message-passing programs in particular. A variety of type systems that enforce termination by typing have been developed. In this paper, we rigorously compare several type systems for $\pi$-calculus processes from the unifying perspective of termination. Adopting session types as reference framework, we consider two different type systems: one follows Deng and Sangiorgi's weight-based approach; the other is Caires and Pfenning's Curry-Howard correspondence between linear logic and session types. Our technical results precisely connect these very different type systems, and shed light on the classes of client/server interactions they admit as correct.

The Right Kind of Non-Determinism: Using Concurrency to Verify C Programs with Underspecified Semantics

Abstract:We present a novel and well automatable approach to formal verification of C programs with underspecified semantics, i.e., a language semantics that leaves open the order of certain evaluations. First, we reduce this problem to non-determinism of concurrent systems, automatically extracting a distributed Active Object model from underspecified, sequential C code. This translation process provides a fully formal semantics for the considered C subset. In the extracted model every non-deterministic choice corresponds to one possible evaluation order. This step also automatically translates specifications in the ANSI/ISO C Specification Language (ACSL) into method contracts and object invariants for Active Objects. We then perform verification on the specified Active Objects model, using the Crowbar theorem prover, which verifies the extracted model with respect to the translated specification and ensures the original property of the C code for all possible evaluation orders. By using model extraction, we can use standard tools, without designing a new complex program logic to deal with underspecification. The case study used is highly underspecified and cannot be handled correctly by existing tools for C.
