Abstract:I summarize the excitement of my role primarily in the early years of X-ray Astronomy. As a "second-generation" X-ray astronomer, I was privileged to participate in the enormous advance of the field, both technically and astrophysically, that occurred in the late 1960's and 1970's. The remainder of my career has concentrated on the design, construction, calibration, operation, and scientific maintenance of the "cathedral" that is the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. I contrast my early experiences with the current environment for the design and development of instrumentation, especially X-ray optics, which are absolutely essential for the development of the discipline. I express my concerns for the future of X-ray astronomy and offer specific suggestions that I hope will advance the discipline at a more effective and rapid pace.

Abstract:I review the operational capabilities of the Chandra X-ray Observatory, including some of the spectacular results obtained by the general observer community. A natural theme of this talk is that Chandra is revealing outflows of great quantities of energy that were not previously observable. I highlight the Chandra studies of powerful X-ray jets. This subject is only possible due to the sub-arcsecond resolution of the X-ray telescope.

Abstract:In this chapter, we briefly review the history of X-ray astronomy through its missions. We follow a temporal development, from the first instruments onboard rockets and balloons to the most recent and complex space missions. We intend to provide the reader with detailed information and references on the many missions and instruments that have contributed to the success of the exploration of the X-ray universe. We have not included missions that are still operating, providing the worldwide community with high-quality observations. Specific chapters for these missions are included in a dedicated section of the handbook.

Abstract:A decade of X-ray stellar observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton has led to significant advances in our understanding of the physical processes at work in hot (magnetized) plasmas in stars and their immediate environment, providing new perspectives and challenges, and in turn the need for improved models. The wealth of high-quality stellar spectra has allowed us to investigate, in detail, the characteristics of the X-ray emission across the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram. Progress has been made in addressing issues ranging from classical stellar activity in stars with solar-like dynamos (such as flares, activity cycles, spatial and thermal structuring of the X-ray emitting plasma, and evolution of X-ray activity with age), to X-ray generating processes (e.g., accretion, jets, magnetically confined winds) that were poorly understood in the preChandra/XMM-Newton era. I will discuss the progress made in the study of high energy stellar physics and its impact in a wider astrophysical context, focusing on the role of spectral diagnostics now accessible.
The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory: twenty-five years of on-orbit operation

Abstract:As the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory completes a quarter century of on orbit operations, it continues to perform well and produce spectacular scientific results. The response of ACIS has evolved over the lifetime of the observatory due to radiation damage, molecular contamination, changing particle environment, and aging of the spacecraft in general. We present highlights from the instrument team's monitoring program and our expectations for the future of ACIS. Performance changes on ACIS continue to be manageable, and do not indicate any limitations on ACIS lifetime. We examine aspects of the design and operation of ACIS that have impacted its long lifetime with lessons learned for future instruments.

Abstract:X-ray astronomy is a mature area of observational astronomy. After the discovery of the first non-solar X-ray source in 1962, X-ray astronomy proliferated during the Apollo era's space race. Then, it matured as an established area of research during the period of Great Observatories, and now it has become an indispensable tool to understand a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena. Consequently, in recent times, niche observational areas in X-ray astronomy have been explored, and attempts have been made to expand the sensitivity of observations vastly. India was an active partner in the growth of X-ray astronomy. In the initial years, India leveraged its expertise in balloon technology to get significant results in the research area of hard X-ray astronomy. During the rapid growth phase of X-ray astronomy, India made divergent all-round efforts. Later on, however, the technical expertise available in India was insufficient to compete with the highly sophisticated satellite experiments from around the world. During this phase, work in X-ray astronomy continued in a few low-key experiments, eventually resulting in the launch of India's first multi-wavelength astronomical satellite, AstroSat, in 2015. In this article, I will trace the journey of X-ray astronomy and the developments in the Indian context. I will also explore the sociological aspects of the growth of X-ray astronomy, and, in the end, I will present a speculative sketch of the future of X-ray astronomy with an emphasis on the Indian contribution.

Abstract:NASA's Great Observatories have opened up the electromagnetic spectrum from space, providing sustained access to wavelengths not accessible from the ground. Together, Hubble, Compton, Chandra, and Spitzer have provided the scientific community with an agile and powerful suite of telescopes with which to attack broad scientific questions, and react to a rapidly changing scientific landscape. As the existing Great Observatories age, or are decommissioned, community access to these wavelengths will diminish, with an accompanying loss of scientific capability. This report, commissioned by the NASA Cosmic Origins, Physics of the Cosmos and Exoplanet Exploration Program Analysis Groups (PAGs), analyzes the importance of multi-wavelength observations from space during the epoch of the Great Observatories, providing examples that span a broad range of astrophysical investigations.

Abstract:This article offers an insight into the history of the U.S. space program, including its cultural and political aspects. Starting from the vision of space as a new field of peaceful and exciting exploration, predominant in the first half of the 20 th century, moving through the period of the intensive and eventually fruitful Cold War competition between the two bel-ligerent ideological blocs led by the United States and the Soviet Union, and ending with the present-day cooling of the space enthusiasm, it focuses on the main actors and events of the century-long struggle for reaching the stars. The article is based in part on primary journalistic sources in order to capture the social atmosphere of the times it focuses on. It points out to the mid-1960s as the time when the noble aspirations and optimism of the early cosmic endeavors started to succumb to the pressure of reality, which caused the overwhelming stagnation of space initiatives, effectively ending the Golden Age of extra-terrestrial exploration. This argument is backed by an analysis of historical developments leading to and following the American conquest of the Moon.

Abstract:In this paper we first provide a brief history of the handful of X-ray polarization measurements that have been accomplished to date. We then outline new technological developments that indicate more detailed polarization measurements in this important band of the spectrum can, and should be, accomplished in the near future. Finally, we depart somewhat from our original assignment and mention a preliminary result of the most recent observation of the Crab with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory and compare measurement of the X-ray spectral index as a function of pulse phase with optical polarization measurements that will be presented in detail elsewhere in these proceedings.

Abstract:The X-ray observatories XMM-Newton and Chandra provided a wealth of exciting new results. Chandra delivered X-ray images of outstanding detail, reaching subarcsecond spatial resolution for the first time in X-ray astronomy. XMM-Newton provided the highest-signal X-ray spectra ever taken. The imaging and spectral observations are greatly improving our understanding of the physical processes in the central region of active galaxies. The increased sensitivity also allows to peer into the high-redshift universe beyond z=5. I shall provide a review of recent X-ray highlights on (radio-quiet) AGN from low to high redshift, and exciting questions still open. I conclude with a glimpse into the future of X-ray astronomy.

Abstract:The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) is a Probe-class concept that will build on the legacy of the Chandra X-ray Observatory by providing low-background, arcsecond-resolution imaging in the 0.3-10 keV band across a 450 arcminute$^2$ field of view, with an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity. AXIS utilizes breakthroughs in the construction of lightweight segmented X-ray optics using single-crystal silicon, and developments in the fabrication of large-format, small-pixel, high readout rate CCD detectors with good spectral resolution, allowing a robust and cost-effective design. Further, AXIS will be responsive to target-of-opportunity alerts and, with onboard transient detection, will be a powerful facility for studying the time-varying X-ray universe, following on from the legacy of the Neil Gehrels (Swift) X-ray observatory that revolutionized studies of the transient X-ray Universe. In this paper, we present an overview of AXIS, highlighting the prime science objectives driving the AXIS concept and how the observatory design will achieve these objectives.

Abstract:With its excellent spatial resolution, low background, and hard-band response, the Chandra X-ray Observatory is ideal for performing exploratory surveys. These efficient, sensitive observations can place constraints on fundamental properties of a quasar continuum including the X-ray luminosity, the ratio of X-ray to UV power, and the X-ray spectral shape. To demonstrate the power of such surveys to provide significant insight, we consider two examples, a Large Bright Quasar Survey sample of broad absorption line quasars and a sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars with extreme CIV blueshifts. In both cases, exploratory Chandra observations provide important information for a physical understanding of UV spectroscopic differences in quasars.

Abstract:This invited memoir looks back on my scientific career that straddles the solar and stellar branches of astrophysics, with sprinklings of historical context and personal opinion. Except for a description of my life up to my Ph.D. phase, the structure is thematic rather than purely chronological, focusing on those topics that I worked on throughout substantial parts of my life: stars like the Sun and the Sun-as-a-star, surface field evolution, coronal structure and dynamics, heliophysics education, and space weather. Luck and a broadly inquisitive frame of mind shaped a fortunate life on two continents, taking me from one amazing mentor, colleague, and friend to another, working in stimulating settings to interpret data from state-of-the-art space observatories.

Abstract:Identifying trends between observational data and the range of physical parameters of massive stars is a critical step to the still-elusive full understanding of the source, structure, and evolution of X-ray emission from the stellar winds, requiring a substantial sample size and systematic analysis methods. The \emph{Chandra} data archive as of 2022 contains 37 high resolution spectra of O, B, and WR stars, observed with the \emph{Chandra}/HETGS and of sufficient quality to fit the continua and emission line profiles. Using a systematic approach to the data analysis, we explore morphological trends in the line profiles (i.e., O, Ne, Mg, Si) and find that the centroid offsets of resolved lines versus wavelength can be separated in three empirically-defined groups based on the amount of line broadening and centroid offset. Using \ion{Fe}{17} (15.01 Å, 17.05 Å) and \ion{Ne}{10} $\alpha$ (12.13 Å) lines which are prevalent among the sample stars, we find a well-correlated linear trend of increasing Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) with faster wind terminal velocity. The H-like/He-like total line flux ratio for strong lines displays different trends with spectral class depending on ion species. Some of the sources in our sample have peculiar properties (e.g., magnetic and $\gamma$ Cas-analogue stars) and we find that these sources stand out as outliers from more regular trends. Finally, our spectral analysis is presented summarily in terms of X-ray spectral energy distributions in specific luminosity for each source, plus tables of line identifications and fluxes.

Abstract:The importance of archival science increases significantly for astrophysical observatories as they mature and their archive holdings grow in size and complexity. Further enhancing the science return of archival data requires engaging a larger audience than the mission reference community, mostly because of the growth of interest in multi-wavelength and transient/time variability research. Such a goal, though, can be difficult to achieve. In this paper I will describe a different approach to this question that, while minimizing technological friction and leveraging existing services, makes archival observations more accessible and increases our capability to proactively engage astronomers on potentially interesting archival records. Inspired by this strategy, the Chandra Data Archive team is working on two specific experimental projects that will hopefully demonstrate their potential while contributing to the maximization of the scientific return of the Chandra mission.

Abstract:This white paper is a summarising report of the Forum on monitoring the transient X-ray Universe in the multi-messenger era organized by the International Space Science Institute in Beijing (ISSI-BJ) on May 6-7, 2014. Time-domain astronomy will enter a golden era towards the end of this decade with the advent of major facilities across the electromagnetic spectrum and in the multi-messenger realms of gravitational wave and neutrino. In the soft X-ray regime, the novel micro-pore lobster-eye optics provides a promising technology to realise, for the first time, focusing X-ray optics for wide-angle monitors to achieve a good combination of sensitivity and wide field of view. In this context, Einstein Probe - a soft X-ray all-sky monitor - has been proposed and selected as a candidate mission of priority in the space science programme of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This report summarises the most important science developments in this field towards 2020 and beyond and how to achieve them technologically, which were discussed at this brainstorming forum. It also introduces briefly the Einstein Probe mission, including its key science goals and mission definition, as well as some of the key technological issues.

Abstract:Details are presented of the Whipple Observatory’s 10m atmospheric Cherenkov telescope and camera, as it evolved during the period 1997 until 2006. The design of the telescope and camera’s optical and electronic systems is discussed together with a detailed description of the four-stage GRANITE (Gamma-RAy New Imaging TElescope) upgrade program, undertaken during the same time period. The objective of the upgrade was to improve the telescope’s sensitivity for the detection of very-high-energy gamma-rays. Results from the program are provided and are briefly discussed in the context of the design of VERITAS.
A Chandra X-ray Investigation of the Violent Interstellar Medium: From Dwarf Starbursts to Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

Abstract:We have analyzed observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory of the diffuse emission by hot gas in 7 dwarf starburst galaxies, 6 edge-on starburst galaxies, and 9 Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies. These systems cover ranges of \~ 10^4 in X-ray luminosity and several thousand in star formation rate and K-band luminosity (a proxy for stellar mass). Despite this range in fundamental parameters, we find that the properties of the diffuse X-ray emission are very similar in all three classes of starburst galaxies. The spectrum of the diffuse emission is well fit by thermal emission from gas with kT ~ 0.25 to 0.8 keV and with several-times-solar abundance ratios of alpha elements to Fe. The ratio of the thermal X-ray to far-infrared luminosity is roughly constant, as is the characteristic surface brightness of the diffuse X-ray emission. The size of the diffuse X-ray source increases systematically with both far-infrared and K-Band luminosity. All three classes show strong morphological relationships between the regions of hot gas probed by the diffuse X-ray emission and the warm gas probed by optical line emission. These findings suggest that the same physical mechanism is producing the diffuse X-ray emission in the three types of starbursts, and are consistent with that mechanism being shocks driven by a galactic "superwind'' powered by the kinetic energy collectively supplied by stellar winds and supernovae in the starburst.
