Abstract:Pulsars (PSRs) were identified as neutron stars (NSs) soon after their discoveries,the study of which increases significantly our knowledge of nature.The Nobel prizes of physics had awarded pulsar researchers two times for discovering the first radio pulsar and checking the general theory of relativity with strong gravity,respectively.Recently some new breeds in "neutron star" family have been discovered:the so-called Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs),Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs),Compact Central Objects (CCOs) in supernova remnants (SNRs) and Dim Thermal Neutron Stars (DTNs).These are challenges for theorists:are some or all of the so-called "neutron stars" actually "strange stars (SSs)" in nature? are there any so-colled "magnetars" (a kind of neutron stars with super-strong magnetic field)? The observed properties of the "neutron stars",the theoretical efforts in understanding their nature,and the debates between different models (especially on SGRs/AXPs) are presented.

Abstract:PSR J2150+3427 is a 0.654 s pulsar discovered by the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey. From the follow-up observations, we find that the pulsar is in a highly eccentric orbit (e = 0.601) with an orbital period of 10.592 days and a projected semimajor axis of 25.488 lt-s. Using 2.7 yr of timing data, we also measured the rate of periastron advance omega(center dot) = 0.0115(4) deg yr(-1). An estimate for the total mass of the system using the omega(center dot) gives M-tot = 2.59(13)M-circle dot, which is consistent with most of the known double neutron star (DNS) systems and one neutron star (NS)-white dwarf (WD) system named B2303+46. Combining omega(center dot) with the mass function of the system gives the masses of M-p < 1.67 and M-c > 0.98 M-circle dot for the pulsar and the companion star, respectively. This constraint, along with the spin period and orbital parameters, suggests that it is possibly a DNS system, and we cannot entirely rule out the possibility of an NS-WD system. Future timing observations will vastly improve the uncertainty in omega(center dot), and are likely to allow the detection of additional relativistic effects, which can be used to modify the values of M-p and M-c. With a spin-down luminosity of omega(center dot) = 5.07(6) x 10(29) erg s(-1), PSR J2150+3427 is a very low-luminosity pulsar, with only the binary pulsar J2208+4610 having a smaller omega(center dot).

Abstract:This contribution presents the results of workshop 8 (supernovae) held during the IAU Symposium 339 "Southern Horizons in Time-Domain Astronomy" at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Workshop 8 covered a cornucopia of topics with each one having a short presentation by a pre-determined participant followed by a round table discussion. During the first of two sessions, G. Hosseinzadeh and H. Kuncarayakti presented results of their recent works on interacting supernovae. This includes both the intriguing Type Ibn supernova subclass, as well as SN 2017dio, which appears to be the first Type Ic supernova to exhibit signatures of hydrogen-rich circumstellar interaction at all phases. During the second session, M. Sullivan provided an excellent summary related to the future of transient science in the era of Big Data, and the participants discussed strategies to determine which targets and fields should be selected for spectroscopic followup. Workshop 8 concluded with a rather heated discussion regarding the need for the IAU supernova working group to consider to modify the current criteria for a confirmed supernova to receive an official IAU designation.

Abstract:Problems solved? Pulsar research must be considered - 35 years after the detection of pulsars - a mature science, where the basic questions have been raised and discussed. One would hope that many if not all generic and important problems have found some kind of answer and that scientific work can concentrate now on specific details requiring more in depth investigation. We know, however, that this picture is not true. Even well studied areas did in the past not always lead to a general accepted model and some were investigated at the beginning with enthusiasm but left behind. This paper will concentrate on one narrow topic, pulsar radio spectra. It is the attempt to work out, what features are now generally accepted, but also what features are still in discussion after so many years of pulsar research. In this sense the paper will enlighten in a personal view those aspects which are still under discussion.

Abstract:There are two types of timing irregularities seen in pulsars: glitches and timing noise. Both of these phenomena can help us to probe the interior of such exotic objects. This paper presents a brief overview of the observational and theoretical aspects of pulsar timing irregularities and the main results from the investigations of these phenomena in India. The relevance of such Indian programs for monitoring of young pulsars with the square kilometer array (SKA) is presented, highlighting possible contributions of the Indian neutron star community to the upcoming SKA endeavor.

Abstract:Symmetries play a fundamental role in modern theories of gravity. The strong equivalence principle (SEP) constitutes a collection of gravitational symmetries which are all implemented by general relativity. Alternative theories, however, are generally expected to violate some aspects of SEP. We test three aspects of SEP using observed change rates in the orbital period and eccentricity of binary pulsar J1713+0747: (1) the gravitational constant's constancy as part of locational invariance of gravitation; (2) the universality of free fall (UFF) for strongly self-gravitating bodies; (3) the post-Newtonian parameter to in gravitational Lorentz invariance. Based on the pulsar timing result of the combined data set from the North American Nanohertz Gravitational Observatory and the European Pulsar Timing Array, we find (G) over dot/G = (-0.1 +/- 0.9) x 10(-12) yr(-1) , which is weaker than Solar system limits, but applies for strongly self-gravitating objects. Furthermore, we obtain an improved test for a UFF violation by a strongly self-gravitating mass falling in the gravitational field of our Galaxy, with a limit of vertical bar Delta vertical bar< 0.002 (95 per cent C.L.). Finally, we derive an improved limit on the self-acceleration of a gravitationally bound rotating body, to a preferred reference frame in the Universe, with -3 x 10(-20) < <(alpha)over cap>(3) < 4 x 10(-20) (95 per cent C.L.). These results are based on direct UFF and (alpha) over cap (3 )tests using pulsar binaries, and they overcome various limitations of previous tests of this kind.

Abstract:The excellent sensitivity and high resolution capability of wide FoV ground-based imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes allow us for the first time to resolve the morphological structures of pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) which are older and more extended than the Crab Nebula. VHE gamma-ray observations of such extended nebulae (with field strengths below ~ 20 micro Gauss) probe the electron component corresponding to the unseen extreme ultraviolet (EUV) synchrotron component, which measures electron injection from earlier evolutionary epochs. VHE observations of PWN therefore introduce a new window on PWN research. This review paper also identifies conditions for maximal VHE visbility of PWN. Regarding pulsar pulsed emission, it is becoming clear that the threshold energies of current telescopes are not sufficient to probe the pulsed gamma-ray component from canonical pulsars. Theoretical estimates of pulsed gamma-ray emission from millisecond pulsars seem to converge and it becomes clear that such detections with current 3rd generation telescopes will not be possible, unless the geometry is favourable.

Abstract:In the late age of developing quantum mechanics, Lev Landau made great efforts to understand the nature of matter, even stellar matter, by applying the quantum theory. Ninety years ago, he published his idea of "neutron " star, which burst upon him during his visit over Europe in the previous year. The key point that motivated Landau to write the paper is to make a state with lower energy for "gigantic nucleus ", avoiding extremely high kinematic energy of electron due to the new Fermi-Dirac statistics at that time. Landau had no alternative but to neutralize by "combining a proton and an electron " before the discovery of neutron. However, our understanding of the nature has fundamentally improved today, and another way (strangeonization) could also embody neutralization and thus a low-energy state that Landau had in mind, which could further make unprecedented opportunities in this multi-messenger era of astronomy. Strangeon matter in "old " physics may impact dramatically today's physics, from compact stars initiated by Landau, to cosmic rays and dark matter. In this essay, we are making briefly the origin and development of neutron star concept to reform radically, to remember Landau's substantial contribution to astrophysics and to recall those peculiar memories.

Abstract:This whitepaper presents the research priorities decided on by attendees of the 2022 Town Meeting for Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons and Neutrinos, which took place December 13-15, 2022 in Chapel Hill, NC, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 275 scientists registered for the meeting. The whitepaper makes a number of explicit recommendations and justifies them in detail.
