Abstract:The understanding of neutron star equation of state hinges on a comprehensive analysis of multi-messenger, multi-wavelength data. The recent scrutiny of PSR J0030+0451 data by NICER introduces complexities, unveiling a tension with another X-ray observation of the central compact object in HESS J1731-347, specifically concerning the mass-radius constraint of low-mass neutron stars. This tension persists when integrating NICER's updated data with LIGO/Virgo's gravitational-wave data from the GW170817 binary neutron star merger. Despite attempts to reconcile these disparate observations, the current combined data still can not distinguish different types of neutron stars -- whether they are pure neutron stars or hybrid stars. Bayesian inference indicates only modest changes in the posterior ranges of parameters related to the nuclear matter and deconfinement phase transition. This ongoing exploration underscores the intricate challenges in precisely characterizing neutron stars. It also points out that it is possible to probe the equation of state at different density regimes from future more accurate radii of neutron stars with various masses.

Abstract:Neutron stars are compact and dense celestial objects that offer the unique opportunity to explore matter and its interactions under conditions that cannot be reproduced elsewhere in the Universe. Their extreme gravitational, rotational and magnetic energy reservoirs fuel the large variety of their emission, which encompasses all available multi-messenger tracers: electromagnetic and gravitational waves, neutrinos, and cosmic rays. However, accurately measuring global neutron-star properties such as mass, radius, and moment of inertia poses significant challenges. Probing internal characteristics such as the crustal composition or superfluid physics is even more complex. This article provides a comprehensive review of the different methods employed to measure neutron-star characteristics and the level of reliance on theoretical models. Understanding these measurement techniques is crucial for advancing our knowledge of neutron-star physics. We also highlight the importance of employing independent methods and adopting a multi-messenger approach to gather complementary data from various observable phenomena as exemplified by the recent breakthroughs in gravitational-wave astronomy and the landmark detection of a binary neutron-star merger. Consolidating the current state of knowledge on neutron-star measurements will enable an accurate interpretation of the current data and errors, and better planning for future observations and experiments.

Abstract:White dwarfs and neutron stars are stellar objects with masses comparable to that of our sun. However, as the endpoint stages of stellar evolution, these objects do not sustain any thermonuclear burning and therefore can no longer support the gravitational load of their own mass by generating thermal pressure. Rather, matter in their interiors is compressed to much higher densities than commonly found in normal stars, and pressure is created by degenerate fermion kinetic energy and particle interactions. As a result, white dwarfs and neutron stars offer unique cosmic laboratories for studying matter at very high densities. In this review we discuss the basic properties of condensed matter at extreme densities and summarize the extent to which these properties can be examined by observations of compact objects.

Abstract:White dwarfs and neutron stars are far-reaching and multi-faceted laboratories in the hunt for dark matter. We review detection prospects of wave-like, particulate, macroscopic and black hole dark matter that make use of several exceptional properties of compact stars, such as ultra-high densities, deep fermion degeneracies, low temperatures, nucleon superfluidity, strong magnetic fields, high rotational regularity, and significant gravitational wave emissivity. Foundational topics first made explicit in this document include the effect of the ``propellor phase" on neutron star baryonic accretion, and the contribution of Auger and Cooper pair breaking effects to neutron star heating by dark matter capture.

Abstract:Neutron stars are versatile in their application to studying various important aspects of fundamental physics, in particular strong-field gravity tests and the equation of state for super-dense nuclear matter at low temperatures. However, in many cases these two objectives are degenerate to each other. We discuss how pulsar timing and gravitational waves provide accurate measurements of neutron star systems and how to effectively break the degeneracy using tools like universal relations. We also present perspectives on future opportunities and challenges in the field of neutron star physics.

Abstract:In the late age of developing quantum mechanics, Lev Landau made great efforts to understand the nature of matter, even stellar matter, by applying the quantum theory. Ninety years ago, he published his idea of "neutron " star, which burst upon him during his visit over Europe in the previous year. The key point that motivated Landau to write the paper is to make a state with lower energy for "gigantic nucleus ", avoiding extremely high kinematic energy of electron due to the new Fermi-Dirac statistics at that time. Landau had no alternative but to neutralize by "combining a proton and an electron " before the discovery of neutron. However, our understanding of the nature has fundamentally improved today, and another way (strangeonization) could also embody neutralization and thus a low-energy state that Landau had in mind, which could further make unprecedented opportunities in this multi-messenger era of astronomy. Strangeon matter in "old " physics may impact dramatically today's physics, from compact stars initiated by Landau, to cosmic rays and dark matter. In this essay, we are making briefly the origin and development of neutron star concept to reform radically, to remember Landau's substantial contribution to astrophysics and to recall those peculiar memories.

On the potential of probing the neutron star composition in accreting X-ray binaries

Abstract:Transiently accreting Low Mass X-Ray Binaries have the potential to probe the core composition of their neutron stars via deep crustal heating caused by nuclear reactions. We statistically assess this deep crustal heating scenario, taking into account the various microphysical and astrophysical uncertainties. We find that despite the sizable uncertainties there is the chance to discriminate different compositional scenarios. Several observed sources statistically challenge a minimal hadronic matter composition, where cooling proceeds exclusively via slow modified Urca reactions. Considering here two exemplary extended uniform compositions, namely ultra-dense hadronic matter with direct Urca emission and ungapped quark matter, we find that they are even within uncertainties distinguishable. We show that although exotic forms of matter are generally only expected in an inner core, which could in principle have any size, sufficiently large astrophysical data sets nonetheless have the potential to statistically discriminate compositional scenarios, in particular when further mass measurements become available.

Abstract:Neutron stars are one of the most extreme objects in the universe, with densities that can exceed those of atomic nuclei and gravitational fields that are among the strongest known. Theoretical and observational research on neutron stars has revealed a wealth of information about their structural characteristics and physical properties. The structural characteristics of neutron stars are determined by the equations of state that describe the relationship between their density, pressure, and energy. These equations of state are still not well understood, and ongoing theoretical research aims to refine our understanding of the behavior of matter under these extreme conditions. Observational research on neutron stars, such as measurements of their masses and radii, can provide valuable constraints on the properties of the equation of state. The physical properties of neutron stars are also of great interest to researchers. Neutron stars have strong magnetic fields, which can produce observable effects such as pulsations and emission of X-rays and gamma rays. The surface temperature of neutron stars can also provide insight into their thermal properties, while observations of their gravitational fields can test predictions of Einstein's theory of general relativity. Observational research on neutron stars is carried out using a variety of techniques, including radio and X-ray telescopes, gravitational wave detectors, and optical telescopes. These observations are often combined with theoretical models to gain a more complete understanding of the properties of neutron stars.

Abstract:A common question about compact objects in high energy astrophysics is whether it is possible to distinguish black hole from neutron star systems with some other property that is not the mass of the compact object. Up to now a few characteristics have been found which are typical of neutron stars (like quasi periodic oscillations at kHz frequencies or type-I X-ray bursts), but in many respects black hole and neutron star systems show very similar behaviors. We present here a spectral study of low mass X-ray binaries containing neutron stars and show that these systems have spectral characteristics that are very similar to what is found for black hole systems. This implies that it is unlikely we can distinguish between black holes and neutron stars from their X-ray spectra, except for the fact that black hole systems show sometimes a more extreme behavior with respect to neutron star systems.

Abstract:This Cool Stars 16 splinter session was devoted to reviewing our current knowledge of correlated X-ray and radio emission from cool stars in order to prepare for new large radio observatories such as the EVLA. A key interest was to discuss why the X-ray and radio luminosities of some cool stars are in clear breach of a correlation that holds for other active stars, the so-called G\"udel-Benz relation. Abstract:This paper summarizes the three-day international workshop "Radio Stars and Their Lives in the Galaxy", held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Haystack Observatory on 2012 October 3-5. The workshop was organized to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of advances in stellar and solar astrophysics recently (or soon to be) enabled by the latest generation of state-of-the-art observational facilities operating from meter to submillimeter wavelengths. The meeting brought together both observers and theorists to discuss how radio wavelength observations are providing new and unique insights into the workings of stars and their role in the Galactic ecosystem. Topics covered included radio emission from hot and cool stars (from the pre- to post-main-sequence), the Sun as a radio star, circumstellar chemistry, planetary nebulae, white dwarf binaries and novae, supernova progenitors, and radio stars as probes of the Galaxy.

Abstract:A decade of X-ray stellar observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton has led to significant advances in our understanding of the physical processes at work in hot (magnetized) plasmas in stars and their immediate environment, providing new perspectives and challenges, and in turn the need for improved models. The wealth of high-quality stellar spectra has allowed us to investigate, in detail, the characteristics of the X-ray emission across the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram. Progress has been made in addressing issues ranging from classical stellar activity in stars with solar-like dynamos (such as flares, activity cycles, spatial and thermal structuring of the X-ray emitting plasma, and evolution of X-ray activity with age), to X-ray generating processes (e.g., accretion, jets, magnetically confined winds) that were poorly understood in the preChandra/XMM-Newton era. I will discuss the progress made in the study of high energy stellar physics and its impact in a wider astrophysical context, focusing on the role of spectral diagnostics now accessible.

Abstract:The quest for the origin of matter in the Universe had been the subject of philosophical and theological debates over the history of mankind, but quantitative answers could be found only by the scientific achievements of the last century. A first important step on this way was the development of spectral analysis by Kirchhoff and Bunsen in the middle of the 19$^{\rm th}$ century, which provided first insight in the chemical composition of the sun and the stars. The energy source of the stars and the related processes of nucleosynthesis, however, could be revealed only with the discoveries of nuclear physics. A final breakthrough came eventually with the compilation of elemental and isotopic abundances in the solar system, which are reflecting the various nucleosynthetic processes in detail. This review is focusing on the mass region above iron, where the formation of the elements is dominated by neutron capture, mainly in the slow ($s$) and rapid ($r$) processes. Following a brief historic account and a sketch of the relevant astrophysical models, emphasis is put on the nuclear physics input, where status and perspectives of experimental approaches are presented in some detail, complemented by the indispensable role of theory.

Abstract:The past years have witnessed tremendous progress in understanding the properties of neutron stars and of the dense matter in their cores, made possible by electromagnetic observations of neutron stars and the detection of gravitational waves from their mergers. These observations provided novel constraints on neutron-star structure, that is intimately related to the properties of dense neutron-rich matter described by the nuclear equation of state. Nevertheless, constraining the equation of state over the wide range of densities probed by astrophysical observations is still challenging, as the physics involved is very broad and the system spans many orders of magnitude in densities. Here, we review theoretical approaches to calculate and model the neutron-star equation of state in various regimes of densities, and discuss the related consequent properties of neutron stars. We describe how the equation of state can be calculated from nuclear interactions that are constrained and benchmarked by nuclear experiments. We review neutron-star observations, with particular emphasis on information provided by gravitational-wave signals and electromagnetic observations. Finally, we discuss future challenges and opportunities in the field.
