Abstract:Under extreme conditions of temperature and/or density, quarks and gluons are expected to undergo a deconfinement phase transition. While this is an ephemeral phenomenon at the ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collider (BNL-RHIC), quark matter may exist naturally in the dense interior of neutron stars. Herein, we present an appraisal of the possible phase structure of dense quark matter inside neutron stars, and the likelihood of its existence given the current status of neutron star observations. We conclude that quark matter inside neutron stars cannot be dismissed as a possibility, although recent observational evidence rules out most soft equations of state.

Abstract:Based on a quasiparticle model for \beta stable and electrically neutral deconfined matter we address the mass-radius relation of pure quark stars. The model is adjusted to recent hot lattice QCD results for 2 + 1 flavors with almost physical quark masses. We find rather small radii and masses of equilibrium configurations composed of cold deconfined matter, well distinguished from neutron or hybrid stars.

Neutron-quark stars: Discerning viable alternatives for the higher-density part of the equation of state of compact stars

Abstract:By taking into account the latest observations and theoretical constraints, we investigate the merger and post-merger of binary neutron stars (NSs) with general-relativistic numerical simulations employing hadronic and hybrid equations of state (EOSs). We name our hybrid stars neutron-quark stars (NQS), because the transition from hadrons to quarks starts at a density lower than the central density of $\sim 1 M_{\odot}$ stars. We address two viable scenarios for the transition to quark matter: a crossover or a strong first-order phase transition (1PT). We find that a crossover transition is in principle observable when both the inspiral and post-merger signals are detected because the post-merger gravitational-wave (GW) main frequency $f_2$ is generally lower than that of hadronic models with the same tidal deformability ($\Lambda$). Since it is viable according to current multi-messenger constraints, we also highlight the possibility of an EOS with a strong 1PT that takes place at 1.8 times the nuclear saturation density, with a stiff quark EOS after the transition. It is the first time that mergers of binary NQSs with a deconfined quark-matter core are studied numerically in full general relativity. In this case, although ($\Lambda$, compactness) lies significantly outside the hadronic relation, ($\Lambda$, $f_2$) is close to the relation valid for hadronic EOSs. We also point out a linear correlation, valid within the observational constraints and not sensitive to the presence of a hadron-quark transition, between the emitted energy in GWs and their frequency.

Abstract:It is usually thought that a single equation of state (EoS) model "correctly" represents cores of all compact stars. Here we emphasize that two families of compact stars, viz., neutron stars and strange stars, can coexist in nature, and that neutron stars can get converted to strange stars through the nucleation process of quark matter in the stellar center. From our fully general relativistic numerical computations of the structures of fast-spinning compact stars, known as millisecond pulsars, we find that such a stellar conversion causes a simultaneous spin-up and decrease in gravitational mass of these stars. This is a new type of millisecond pulsar evolution through a new mechanism, which gives rise to relatively lower mass compact stars with higher spin rates. This could have implication for the observed mass and spin distributions of millisecond pulsars. Such a stellar conversion can also rescue some massive, spin-supported millisecond pulsars from collapsing into black holes. Besides, we extend the concept of critical mass $M_{\rm cr}$ for the neutron star sequence (Berezhiani et al. 2003; Bombaci et al. 2004) to the case of fast-spinning neutron stars, and point out that neutron star EoS models cannot be ruled out by the stellar mass measurement alone. Finally, we emphasize the additional complexity for constraining EoS models, for example, by stellar radius measurements using X-ray observations, if two families of compact stars coexist.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the gravity theory, which introduces a coupling between matter and curvature, through the simplest linear functional form . We derive the modified Einstein field equations and conservation equations for this theory. We then apply this framework to study the structural properties of quark stars (QSs) composed of interacting quark matter, considering perturbative QCD corrections and color superconductivity. By solving the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations, we investigate the mass-radius relation, stability criteria, and energy conditions of QSs. Our results indicate that the gravity significantly influences the properties of QSs, leading to deviations from General Relativity. The analysis shows consistency with recent observational data, suggesting that the modified gravity framework could provide viable models for the study of compact stars.

Abstract:Are there quark stars in nature? We review the question in the light of modern astrophysical observations. Quark stars have properties which are very similar to those of neutron stars. For example they are now known to have the same kind of cooling properties. Their masses may also be similar. On the other hand, gamma ray bursts (GRB), the brightest phenomenon observable at present in the sky, could possibly be conversion of normal or neutron matter on the surface of a quark star.The best observational evidence for the existence of quark stars seems to be some compact objects, the X-Ray burst source 4U 1820-30, the X-ray pulsar Her X-l, the star 4U 1728-34 and SAX J-1808.4-3658, this last one being the stablest and fastest rotating hard X-ray pulsar known to date. The mass of at least these four objects is high and their radius is low, placing them close to the black hole line, in the mass-radius (M-R) plot.

Abstract:Whether or not deconfined quark phase exists in neutron star cores and represents the ground state of neutral matter at moderate densities are open questions. We use two realistic effective quark models, the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and the modified quark-meson coupling model, to describe the neutron star matter. After constructing possible hybrid equations of state (EOSes) with unpaired or color superconducting quark phase, we systematically discuss the observational constraints of neutron stars on the EOSes. It is found that the neutron star with pure quark matter core is unstable and the hadronic phase with hyperons is denied, while hybrid EOSes with two-flavor color superconducting phase or unpaired quark matter phase are both allowed by the tight and most reliable constraints from two stars Ter 5 I and EXO 0748-676. And the hybrid EOS with unpaired quark matter phase is allowed even compared with the tightest constraint from the most massive pulsar star PSR J0751+1807. Therefore, we conclude that the ground state of neutral matter at moderate densities is in deconfined quark phase likely.

Abstract:Since the derivation of a well-defined D→4 limit for 4D Einstein Gauss-Bonnet (4DEGB) gravity coupled to a scalar field, there has been interest in testing it as an alternative to Einstein's general theory of relativity. Using the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations modified for 4DEGB gravity, we model the stellar structure of quark stars using a novel interacting quark matter equation of state. We find that increasing the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant α or the interaction parameter λ both tend to increase the mass-radius profiles of quark stars described by this theory, allowing a given central pressure to support larger quark stars in general. These results logically extend to cases where λ<0 , in which increasing the magnitude of the interaction effects instead diminishes masses and radii. We also analytically identify a critical central pressure in both regimes, below which no quark star solutions exist due to the pressure function having no roots. Most interestingly, we find that quark stars can exist below the general relativistic Buchdahl bound and Schwarzschild radius R=2M , due to the lack of a mass gap between black holes and compact stars in the 4DEGB theory. Even for small α well within current observational constraints, we find that quark star solutions in this theory can describe extreme compact objects, objects whose radii are smaller than what is allowed by general relativity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.024026 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:More and more observational hints of quark stars are proposed these years though pulsars are considered conventionally to be normal neutron stars. The existence of low-mass quark stars is a direct consequence of the possibility that pulsar-like stars are actually quark stars, because of the ability that quark matter can confine itself by color interaction. After a brief introduction to the study of quark stars, the various astrophysical implications of low-mass quark stars are investigated. It is addressed that some of the transient unidentified γ -ray sources are probably merging quark stars. The observability of low-mass quark stars is discussed.

Abstract:Recent observations of massive pulsars having masses of the order of two solar mass pose a new challenge for compact objects such as hybrid stars and neutron stars. Extensions of the bag model and the Nambu-Jona-Lasino model have been used to model these stars to get higher mass stars. Quark matter has been predicted in the cores of these massive stars. In this work we show that an extension of the bag model, with a chemical potential dependent bag parameter can lead to an isentropic phase transition in the core of the neutron star. Our model shows that an equation of state having all three quarks u, d and s would lead to massive stars with stable quark matter. We find that the mass of the stars not only depends on the bag constant but also on the mass of the strange quark. The mass - radius ratio which determines the redshift values on the surface, indicates that it is possible to obtain stable self bound strange quark matter stars with reasonable values of the bag pressure which correspond to the recent observations of large mass stars.

Abstract:A class of hybrid compact star equations of state is investigated that joins by a Maxwell construction a low-density phase of hadronic matter, modeled by a relativistic mean-field approach with excluded nucleon volume, with a high-density phase of color superconducting two-flavor quark matter, described within a nonlocal covariant chiral quark model. It is found that the occurrence of a stable branch of hybrid compact stars requires a nonvanishing vector meson coupling in the quark model that exceeds a minimal value which depends on the presence of a diquark condensate. It is shown that these hybrid stars do not form a third family disconnected from the second family of ordinary neutron stars unless additional (de)confining effects are introduced with a density-dependent bag pressure. A suitably chosen density dependence of the vector meson coupling assures that at the same time the 2 M⊙ maximum mass constraint is fulfilled on the hybrid star branch. A twofold interpolation method is realized which implements both the density dependence of a confining bag pressure at the onset of the hadron-to-quark matter transition and the stiffening of quark matter at higher densities by a density-dependent vector meson coupling. For three parametrizations of this class of hybrid equation of state the properties of corresponding compact star sequences are presented, including mass twins of neutron and hybrid stars at 2.00, 1.39 and 1.20 M⊙, respectively, and the hybrid compact star (third) families. The sensitivity of the hybrid equation of state and the corresponding compact star sequences to variations of the interpolation parameters at the 10% level is investigated and it is found that the feature of third family solutions for compact stars is robust against such a variation. This advanced description of hybrid star matter allows us to interpret GW170817 as a merger not only of two neutron stars but also of a neutron star with a hybrid star or of two hybrid stars.

Abstract:Strange quark matter in beta equilibrium at high densities is studied in a quark confinement model. Two equations of state are dynamically generated for the same set of model parameters used to describe the nucleon: one corresponds to a chiral restored phase with almost massless quarks and the other to a chiral broken phase. The chiral symmetric phase saturates at around five times the nuclear matter density. Using the equation of state for this phase, compact bare quark stars are obtained with radii and masses in the ranges R ~ 5?8 km and M ~ M?. The energy per baryon number decreases very slowly from the centre of the star to the periphery, remaining above the corresponding values for iron or nuclear matter, even at the edge. Our results point out that strange quark matter at very high densities may not be absolutely stable and the existence of an energy barrier between the two phases may prevent the compact quark stars from decaying to hybrid stars.

Phase Structure of Compact Star in Modified Quark-Meson Coupling Model

Abstract:The K− condensation and quark deconfinement phase transitions are investigated in the modified quark- meson coupling model. It is shown that K− condensation is suppressed because of the quark deconfinement when B1/4 <202.2MeV, where B is the bag constant for unpaired quark matter. With the equation of state (EOS) solved self-consistently, we discuss the properties of compact stars. We find that the EOS of pure hadron matter with condensed K− phase should be ruled out by the redshift for star EXO0748-676, while EOS containing unpaired quark matter phase with B1/4 being about 180MeV could be consistent with this observation and the best measured mass of star PSR 1913+16. We then probe into the change of the phase structures in possible compact stars with deconfinment phase as the central densities increase. But if the recent inferred massive star among Terzan 5 with M>1.68M⊙ is confirmed, all the present EOSes with condensed phase and deconfined phase would be ruled out and therefore these exotic phases are unlikely to appear within neutron stars.
Study of Compact Stars and their Properties based on General Relativistic Core-Envelope Models

Abstract:This thesis explores compact objects, particularly neutron stars, focusing on their properties, classification, and stability within the framework of general relativity. Two distinct studies are presented. The first study examines the properties of compact stars, including neutron stars, using an equation of state from a core-envelope model. By solving Einstein's equations with pseudo-spheroidal and spherically symmetric geometries, the mass-radius relationship is derived, leading to the classification of compact stars into three categories: highly compact self-bound stars (radii $<$ 9 km), normal neutron stars (radii 9--12 km), and soft matter neutron stars (radii 12--20 km). Other parameters such as Keplerian frequency, surface gravity, and gravitational redshift are also computed, offering insights into highly compact neutron stars with exotic compositions. The second study investigates the impact of density perturbations and local anisotropy on stellar stability. Using the cracking concept and a core-envelope model with anisotropic pressure in the envelope, we explore the potential of these configurations as progenitors for starquakes. The buildup of strain energy in the envelope, linked to anisotropy, can reach up to $10^{50}$ erg -- comparable to energy released in giant gamma-ray bursts. This study thus contributes to understanding the relationship between starquakes and gamma-ray bursts. Overall, this work advances the understanding of neutron stars by classifying them based on their radii and investigating the stability of their matter structures, providing new insights into starquakes and their possible connections with gamma-ray bursts.

Abstract:The stellar configurations of quark stars have been studied using perturbative QCD (pQCD). The effective equation of state (EoS) for cold quark matter from pQCD has been used which goes beyond the MIT bag model description. The neutron star structures with EoS obtained from NRAPR Skyrme interaction have also been explored. The quark-hadron deconfinement phase transition in matter under extreme pressure in stellar interior has been studied using Maxwell construction. The influence of hybrid EoS on the jump in energy density has been investigated. To study hybrid stars, the NRAPR hadronic model and pQCD EoS for the quark phase have been used. The effects of the different parameters of the pQCD model on the structural properties of Quark stars and Hybrid stars have been investigated in light of various recent astrophysical observations. The mass-radius variation of Quark stars, Neutron stars and Hybrid stars with quark matter cores in the context of twin stars and appearance of special points have been studied.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of compact stars admixed with non-self annihilating self-interacting fermionic dark matter, delineating the dependence on the nuclear equation of state by considering the two limiting parametrized equations of state for neutron star matter obtained by smoothly matching the low-density chiral effective theory and the high-density perturbative QCD. These two parametrizations are the limiting cases of a wide variety of smooth equations of state, i.e. the softest and stiffest possible one without a phase transition, that generate masses and radii compatible with 2M$_\odot$ observations and the tidal constraint from GW170817. With an exhaustive analysis of the possible stable mass-radius configurations, we determine the quantity of dark matter contained in stars with masses and radii compatible with the aforementioned astrophysical constraints. We find that for dark particle masses of a few tenths of GeV, the dark core collapses and no stable solutions are found for the two limiting ordinary matter equations of state. For lower masses, the dark matter fraction is limited to 10%, being at most 1% for masses ranging from 0.1 to 10 GeV for the limiting soft nuclear equation of state. For the limiting stiff nuclear equation of state, the dark matter fraction can reach values of more than 10%, but the dark particle mass is being constrained to 0.3 GeV and 10 GeV for the weak self-interacting case and has to be at least 5 GeV for the strong self-interacting one. For dark particle masses of less than 0.1 GeV, stable neutron star configurations should have less than 1% of self-interacting dark matter to be compatible with the constraint of the tidal deformability from GW170817 for the two limiting ordinary matter equations of state studied.

Quark stars in generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

Abstract:We investigate the physical properties of quark stars with two different equations of state in generalized hybrid metric-Palatini gravity. This theory corresponds to a bi-scalar gravitational theory in which there are two non-minimally-coupled scalar fields. The field equations of the metric tensor and scalar fields are derived by varying the action with respect to the dynamical fields. We obtain the field equations for static spherically symmetric geometry interior of compact objects. The numerical solutions for two types of quark stars, the MIT bag and CFL model are studied. The solutions reveal the structure of the compact objects. The solutions are obtained for different values of the model parameters. All considered cases show that compact objects are more massive than their general relativity counterpart. The surface redshift and compactness are also obtained which shows that the generalized hybrid metric-Palatini quark stars have higher surface redshift and are more compact than general relativity quark stars.
