Abstract:Using the Schulze model for Monte Carlo simulations of language competition, we include a barrier between the top half and the bottom half of the lattice. We check under which conditions two different languages evolve as dominating in the two halves.

Abstract:This white paper informs the nuclear astrophysics community and funding agencies about the scientific directions and priorities of the field and provides input from this community for the 2015 Nuclear Science Long Range Plan. It summarizes the outcome of the nuclear astrophysics town meeting that was held on August 21-23, 2014 in College Station at the campus of Texas A&M University in preparation of the NSAC Nuclear Science Long Range Plan. It also reflects the outcome of an earlier town meeting of the nuclear astrophysics community organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA) on October 9- 10, 2012 Detroit, Michigan, with the purpose of developing a vision for nuclear astrophysics in light of the recent NRC decadal surveys in nuclear physics (NP2010) and astronomy (ASTRO2010). The white paper is furthermore informed by the town meeting of the Association of Research at University Nuclear Accelerators (ARUNA) that took place at the University of Notre Dame on June 12-13, 2014. In summary we find that nuclear astrophysics is a modern and vibrant field addressing fundamental science questions at the intersection of nuclear physics and astrophysics. These questions relate to the origin of the elements, the nuclear engines that drive life and death of stars, and the properties of dense matter. A broad range of nuclear accelerator facilities, astronomical observatories, theory efforts, and computational capabilities are needed. With the developments outlined in this white paper, answers to long standing key questions are well within reach in the coming decade.

Abstract:In a companion paper (to be presented), lattice field theory methods are used to show that in two-color, two-flavor QCD there are stable nuclear states in the spectrum. As a commonly studied theory of composite dark matter, this motivates the consideration of possible nuclear physics in this and other composite dark sectors. In this work, early Universe cosmology and indirect detection signatures are explored for both symmetric and asymmetric dark matter, highlighting the unique features that arise from considerations of dark nuclei and associated dark nuclear processes. The present day dark matter abundance may be composed of dark nucleons and/or dark nuclei, where the latter are generated through it dark nucleosynthesis. For symmetric dark matter, indirect detection signatures are possible from annihilation, dark nucleosynthesis, and dark nuclear capture and we present a novel explanation of the galactic center gamma ray excess based on the latter. For asymmetric dark matter, dark nucleosynthesis may alter the capture of dark matter in stars, allowing for captured particles to be processed into nuclei and ejected from the star through dark nucleosynthesis in the core. Notably, dark nucleosynthesis realizes a novel mechanism for indirect detection signals of asymmetric dark matter from regions such as the galactic center, without having to rely on a symmetric dark matter component.

Abstract:The quest to discover the nature of dark matter continues to drive many of the experimental and observational frontiers in particle physics, astronomy, and cosmology. While there are no definitive signatures to date, there exists a rich ecosystem of experiments searching for signals for a broad class of dark matter models, at different epochs of cosmic history, and through a variety of processes with different characteristic energy scales. Given the multitude of candidates and search strategies, effective field theory has been an important tool for parametrizing the possible interactions between dark matter and Standard Model probes, for quantifying and improving model-independent uncertainties, and for robust estimation of detection rates in the presence of large perturbative corrections. This white paper summarizes a wide range of effective field theory applications for connecting dark matter theories to experiments.

Abstract:This white paper provides a comprehensive review of our present understanding of experimental neutrino anomalies that remain unresolved, charting the progress achieved over the last decade at the experimental and phenomenological level, and sets the stage for future programmatic prospects in addressing those anomalies. It is purposed to serve as a guiding and motivational "encyclopedic" reference, with emphasis on needs and options for future exploration that may lead to the ultimate resolution of the anomalies. We see the main experimental, analysis, and theory-driven thrusts that will be essential to achieving this goal being: 1) Cover all anomaly sectors -- given the unresolved nature of all four canonical anomalies, it is imperative to support all pillars of a diverse experimental portfolio, source, reactor, decay-at-rest, decay-in-flight, and other methods/sources, to provide complementary probes of and increased precision for new physics explanations; 2) Pursue diverse signatures -- it is imperative that experiments make design and analysis choices that maximize sensitivity to as broad an array of these potential new physics signatures as possible; 3) Deepen theoretical engagement -- priority in the theory community should be placed on development of standard and beyond standard models relevant to all four short-baseline anomalies and the development of tools for efficient tests of these models with existing and future experimental datasets; 4) Openly share data -- Fluid communication between the experimental and theory communities will be required, which implies that both experimental data releases and theoretical calculations should be publicly available; and 5) Apply robust analysis techniques -- Appropriate statistical treatment is crucial to assess the compatibility of data sets within the context of any given model.

Abstract:White dwarfs and neutron stars are far-reaching and multi-faceted laboratories in the hunt for dark matter. We review detection prospects of wave-like, particulate, macroscopic and black hole dark matter that make use of several exceptional properties of compact stars, such as ultra-high densities, deep fermion degeneracies, low temperatures, nucleon superfluidity, strong magnetic fields, high rotational regularity, and significant gravitational wave emissivity. Foundational topics first made explicit in this document include the effect of the ``propellor phase" on neutron star baryonic accretion, and the contribution of Auger and Cooper pair breaking effects to neutron star heating by dark matter capture.

Abstract:Astrophysical observations suggest that most of the matter in the cosmos consists of a new form that has not been observed on Earth. The nature and origin of this mysterious dark matter are among the most pressing questions in fundamental science. In this review we summarize the current state of dark matter research from two perspectives. First, we provide an overview of the leading theoretical proposals for dark matter. And second, we describe how these proposals have driven a broad and diverse global search program for dark matter involving direct laboratory searches and astrophysical observations. This review is based on a Green Paper on dark matter prepared as part of the 2020 Astroparticle Community Planning initiative undertaken by the Canadian Subatomic Physics community but has been significantly updated to reflect recent advances.

Abstract:Direct detection experiments for light (sub-GeV) dark matter are making enormous leaps in reaching previously unexplored theory space. The need for accurate characterizations of target responses has led to a growing interplay between particle and condensed matter physics. This white paper summarizes recent progress on direct detection calculations that utilize state-of-the-art numerical tools in condensed matter physics and effective field theory techniques. These new results provide the theoretical framework for interpreting ongoing and planned experiments using electronic and collective excitations, and for optimizing future searches.

Abstract:In a search for a solution of the galaxy rotation problem, a novel view on cosmological gravity is developed. In this view, the origin of gravity is traced back to the basic nuclear field of energy, spread by quarks as elementary pointlike sources. This gives a common basis for gravity, electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force. After a review on gravimagnetism and the causality problem of gravity, a hypothetical concept for the gravity field is proposed, which solves the rotation problem without the need to accept dark matter as the deus ex machina.

Abstract:From the observed results, we deduced that the mass of the neutrino is about 10^(-1) eV and the mass of the fourth stable elementary particle (delta) is about 10^(0) eV. While neutrino is related to electro-weak field, the fourth stable elementary particle delta is related to gravitation-"strong" field, and some new meta-stable baryons may appear near the TeV region. Therefore, a twofold standard model diagram is proposed, and involves some experiment phenomena: The new meta-stable baryons' decays produce delta particles, which are helpful in explaining the Dijet asymmetry phenomena at LHC of CERN, the different results for the Fermilab's data peak, etc; However, according to the (B-L) invariance, the sterile "neutrino" about the event excess in MiniBooNe is not the fourth neutrino but rather the delta particle; We think that the delta particles are related to the phenomenon about neutrinos FTL, and that anti-neutrinos are faster than neutrinos. FTL is also related to cosmic inflation, singular point disappearance, a finite universe, and abnormal red shift of SN Ia. Besides, the dark matter particles with low mass are helpful in explaining missing solar neutrinos, the CMB angular power spectrum measured by WMAP etc. Some experiments and observations are suggested, especially about the measurement for the speed of gravitational wave c'. c' and c, in physics, represent the limit speeds of moving particles made by different categories of matter with different Lorentz factors. Lorentz transformation is compatible with FTL. This will be helpful to look for new particles.

Abstract:Fundamental neutron physics, combining precision measurements and theory, probes particle physics at short range with reach well beyond the highest energies probed by the LHC. Significant US efforts are underway that will probe BSM CP violation with orders of magnitude more sensitivity, provide new data on the Cabibbo anomaly, more precisely measure the neutron lifetime and decay, and explore hadronic parity violation. World-leading results from the US Fundamental Neutron Physics community since the last Long Range Plan, include the world's most precise measurement of the neutron lifetime from UCN$\tau$, the final results on the beta-asymmetry from UCNA and new results on hadronic parity violation from the NPDGamma and n-${^3}$He runs at the FNPB (Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline), precision measurement of the radiative neutron decay mode and n-${}^4$He at NIST. US leadership and discovery potential are ensured by the development of new high-impact experiments including BL3, Nab, LANL nEDM and nEDM@SNS. On the theory side, the last few years have seen results for the neutron EDM from the QCD $\theta$ term, a factor of two reduction in the uncertainty for inner radiative corrections in beta-decay which impacts CKM unitarity, and progress on {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear structure for medium-mass and heavy nuclei which can eventually improve the connection between nuclear and nucleon EDMs. In order to maintain this exciting program and capitalize on past investments while also pursuing new ideas and building US leadership in new areas, the Fundamental Neutron Physics community has identified a number of priorities and opportunities for our sub-field covering the time-frame of the last Long Range Plan (LRP) under development. This white paper elaborates on these priorities.

Abstract:Plots summarizing the constraints on Dark Matter models can help visualize synergies between different searches for the same kind of experiment, as well as between different experiments. In this whitepaper, we present an update to the European Strategy Briefing Book plots, from the perspective of collider searches within the Dark Matter at the Energy Frontier (EF10) Snowmass Topical Group, starting from inputs from future collider facilities. We take as a starting point the plots currently made for LHC searches using benchmark models recommended by the Dark Matter Working Group, also used for the BSM and Dark Matter chapters of the European Strategy Briefing Book. These plots can also serve as a starting point for cross-frontier discussions about dark matter complementarity, and could be updated as a consequence of these discussions. This is a whitepaper submitted to the APS Snowmass process for the EF10 topical group.

Physics of the Dark Universe

Abstract:Neutrinos are the Standard Model (SM) particles which we understand the least, often due to how weakly they interact with the other SM particles. Beyond this, very little is known about interactions among the neutrinos, i.e., their self-interactions. The SM predicts neutrino self-interactions at a level beyond any current experimental capabilities, leaving open the possibility for beyond-the-SM interactions across many energy scales. In this white paper, we review the current knowledge of neutrino self-interactions from a vast array of probes, from cosmology, to astrophysics, to the laboratory. We also discuss theoretical motivations for such self-interactions, including neutrino masses and possible connections to dark matter. Looking forward, we discuss the capabilities of searches in the next generation and beyond, highlighting the possibility of future discovery of this beyond-the-SM physics.

Abstract:In this talk, we briefly review our recent investigations on the properties of dark matter (DM) particle.(1) In 2008 PAMELA released their first results on the positron and antiproton ratios.Stimulated by the new data, we studied systematically [1] the cosmic ray propagation models and calculated the secondary positron and antiproton spectra.Above ∼ 10 GeV PAMELA data shows a clear excess on the positron ratio.However, the secondary antiproton is roughly consistent with data.The positron excess may be a direct evidence of dark matter.We compared the positron and anti-proton spectra with data by assuming dark matter annihilates or decays into different final states.The PAMELA data actually excludes quark pairs being the main final states, disfavors gauge boson final states.Only in the case of leptonic final states the positron and anti-proton spectra can be explained simultaneously.Finally we considerd a decaying neutralino dark matter model in the frame of supersymmetry with R-parity violation.The PAMELA data is well fit-

Abstract:This whitepaper presents the research priorities decided on by attendees of the 2022 Town Meeting for Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons and Neutrinos, which took place December 13-15, 2022 in Chapel Hill, NC, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 275 scientists registered for the meeting. The whitepaper makes a number of explicit recommendations and justifies them in detail.

Abstract:For physicists, recent developments in astrophysics and cosmology present exciting challenges. We are conducting "experiments" in energy regimes some of which will be probed by accelerators in the near future, and others which are inevitably the subject of more speculative theoretical investigations. Dark matter is an area where we have hope of making discoveries both with accelerator experiments and dedicated searches. Inflation and dark energy lie in regimes where presently our only hope for a fundamental understanding lies in string theory.

Abstract:This is a report on the findings of the dark matter science working group for the white paper on the status and future of TeV gamma-ray astronomy. The white paper was commissioned by the American Physical Society, and the full white paper can be found on astro-ph (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0810.0444" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0810.0444">arXiv:0810.0444</a>). This detailed section discusses the prospects for dark matter detection with future gamma-ray experiments, and the complementarity of gamma-ray measurements with other indirect, direct or accelerator-based searches. We conclude that any comprehensive search for dark matter should include gamma-ray observations, both to identify the dark matter particle (through the charac- teristics of the gamma-ray spectrum) and to measure the distribution of dark matter in galactic halos.

Abstract:From the observed results of the space distribution of quasars we deduced that neutrino mass is about10^(-1) eV. The fourth stable elementary particle (delta particle) with mass about 10^(0) eV can help explain the energy resource mechanism in quasars, the peaks of Extra-galactic Background Light (EBL) etc. The key is the annihilation of dark matter particles under the super-strong gravitational/electromagnetic fields from supermassive compact celestial bodies (SCCB) such as galactic nuclei, quasars etc. Their origin is at the early era of the universe (EEU) as universe density lo large than lo(cr) and lo/c^(2)=const, and physical singularities (PSs) are produced from inflation-explosion stage. PSs can still hide in SCCB with FTL matter now. The energy scale at lo(cr) is the critical energy E(cr). At E(cr), inner symmetries are degenerated; below E(cr), it can hold at most 4-fold SM. Appendix is the theoretical/phenomenal part related to the mass scales sequence (MSS), inflation-explosion, spherical universe, BSM, new particles etc. The MSS, like a Mendeleev's periodic table, can be used to cosmology.

Dark Matter Annihilation inside Large Volume Neutrino Detectors

Abstract:New particles in theories beyond the standard model can manifest as stable relics that interact strongly with visible matter and make up a small fraction of the total dark matter abundance. Such particles represent an interesting physics target since they can evade existing bounds from direct detection due to their rapid thermalization in high-density environments. In this work we point out that their annihilation to visible matter inside large-volume neutrino telescopes can provide a new way to constrain or discover such particles. The signal is the most pronounced for relic masses in the GeV range, and can be efficiently constrained by existing Super-Kamiokande searches for di-nucleon annihilation. We also provide an explicit realization of this scenario in the form of secluded dark matter coupled to a dark photon, and we show that the present method implies novel and stringent bounds on the model that are complementary to direct constraints from beam dumps, colliders, and direct detection experiments.
