Abstract:This contribution presents the results of workshop 8 (supernovae) held during the IAU Symposium 339 "Southern Horizons in Time-Domain Astronomy" at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. Workshop 8 covered a cornucopia of topics with each one having a short presentation by a pre-determined participant followed by a round table discussion. During the first of two sessions, G. Hosseinzadeh and H. Kuncarayakti presented results of their recent works on interacting supernovae. This includes both the intriguing Type Ibn supernova subclass, as well as SN 2017dio, which appears to be the first Type Ic supernova to exhibit signatures of hydrogen-rich circumstellar interaction at all phases. During the second session, M. Sullivan provided an excellent summary related to the future of transient science in the era of Big Data, and the participants discussed strategies to determine which targets and fields should be selected for spectroscopic followup. Workshop 8 concluded with a rather heated discussion regarding the need for the IAU supernova working group to consider to modify the current criteria for a confirmed supernova to receive an official IAU designation.

Abstract:In the study of the process of cosmic structure formation numerical simulations are crucial tools to interface observational data to theoretical models and to investigate issues otherwise unexplored. Enormous advances have been achieved in the last years thanks to the availability of sophisticated codes, now allowing to tackle the problem of cosmic structure formation and subsequent evolution by covering larger and larger dynamical ranges. Moreover, computational cosmology is the ideal interpretative framework for the overwhelming amount of new data from extragalactic surveys and from large sample of individual objects. The Workshop Novicosmo 2008 "The Impact of Simulations in Cosmology and Galaxy Formation' held in SISSA was aimed at providing the state-of-the-art on the latest numerical simulations in Cosmology and in Galaxy Formation. Particular emphasis was given to the implementation of new physical processes in simulation codes, to the comparison between different codes and numerical schemes and how to use best supercomputing facilities of the next generation. Finally, the impact on our knowledge on the Physics of the Universe brought by this new channel of investigation has also been focused. The Workshop was divided in three sections corresponding (roughly) to three main areas of study: Reionization and Intergalactic medium; Dark and Luminous matter in galaxies; Clusters of galaxies and Large scale Structures. This paper will provide i) a short resume' of the scientific results of the Workshop ii) the complete list of the talks and the instructions on how to retrieve the .pdf of the related (powerpoint) presentations iii) a brief presentation of the associated Exhibition "Space Art"

Abstract:Supernova remnants (SNRs) offer the means to study SN explosions, dynamics, and shocks at sub-parsec scales. X-ray observations probe the hot metals synthesized in the explosion and the TeV electrons accelerated by the shocks, and thus they are key to test recent, high-fidelity three-dimensional SN simulations. In this white paper, we discuss the major advances possible with X-ray spectro-imaging at arcsecond scales, with a few eV spectral resolution and a large effective area. These capabilities would revolutionize SN science, offering a three-dimensional view of metals synthesized in explosions and enabling population studies of SNRs in Local Group galaxies. Moreover, this future X-ray mission could detect faint, narrow synchrotron filaments and shock precursors that will constrain the diffusive shock acceleration process.

The molecular emission from old supernova remnants

Abstract:Supernovae constitute a critical source of energy input to the interstellar medium (ISM). In this short review, we focus on their latest phase of evolution, the supernova remnants (SNRs). We present observations of three old SNRs that have reached the phase where they interact with the ambient ISM: W28, IC443, and 3C391. We show that such objects make up clean laboratories to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in molecular shock environments. Our studies subsequently allow us to quantify the impact of SNRs on their environment in terms of mass, momentum, and energy dissipation. In turn, their contribution to the energy balance of galaxies can be assessed. Their potential to trigger a further generation of star formation can also be investigated. Finally, our studies provide strong support for the interpretation of gamma-ray emission in SNRs, a crucial step to answer questions related to cosmic rays population and acceleration.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the three-day international workshop "Radio Stars and Their Lives in the Galaxy", held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Haystack Observatory on 2012 October 3-5. The workshop was organized to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of advances in stellar and solar astrophysics recently (or soon to be) enabled by the latest generation of state-of-the-art observational facilities operating from meter to submillimeter wavelengths. The meeting brought together both observers and theorists to discuss how radio wavelength observations are providing new and unique insights into the workings of stars and their role in the Galactic ecosystem. Topics covered included radio emission from hot and cool stars (from the pre- to post-main-sequence), the Sun as a radio star, circumstellar chemistry, planetary nebulae, white dwarf binaries and novae, supernova progenitors, and radio stars as probes of the Galaxy.

Abstract:A summary critique is presented of the topics discussed at a workshop entitled ``Probing the Physics of Active Galactic Nuclei by Multi-wavelength Monitoring'' held at Goddard Space Flight Center 21-23 June 2000. Particular emphasis is placed on the larger astronomical context of research on active galactic nuclei. An important goal is to use multi-wavelength monitoring to produce ``engineering drawings'' of how gas flows in the vicinity of a black hole, as well is in the associated accretion disk inflows and jet outflows. Some of the clear choices that have to be made before formulating a model of a particular class of source are outlined. Future observational possibilities are briefly summarized.

Abstract:We present the science cases and technological discussions that came from the workshop entitled "Finding the UV-Visible Path Forward" held at NASA GSFC June 25-26, 2015. The material presented outlines the compelling science that can be enabled by a next generation space-based observatory dedicated for UV-visible science, the technologies that are available to include in that observatory design, and the range of possible alternative launch approaches that could also enable some of the science. The recommendations to the Cosmic Origins Program Analysis Group from the workshop attendees on possible future development directions are outlined.

Abstract:We use data from the pilot observations of the EMU/POSSUM surveys to study the "missing supernova remnant (SNR) problem", the discrepancy between the number of Galactic SNRs that have been observed and the number that are estimated to exist. The Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) and the Polarization Sky Survey of the Universe's Magnetism (POSSUM) are radio sky surveys that are conducted using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). We report on the properties of 7 known SNRs in the joint Galactic pilot field, with an approximate longitude and latitude of 323$^\circ\leq$ l $\leq$ 330$^\circ$ and -4$^\circ\leq$ b $\leq$ 2$^\circ$ respectively, and identify 21 SNR candidates. Of these, 4 have been previously identified as SNR candidates, 3 were previously listed as a single SNR, 13 have not been previously studied, and 1 has been studied in the infrared. These are the first discoveries of Galactic SNR candidates with EMU/POSSUM and, if confirmed, they will increase the SNR density in this field by a factor of 4. By comparing our SNR candidates to the known Galactic SNR population, we demonstrate that many of these sources were likely missed in previous surveys due to their small angular size and/or low surface brightness. We suspect that there are SNRs in this field that remain undetected due to limitations set by the local background and confusion with other radio sources. The results of this paper demonstrate the potential of the full EMU/POSSUM surveys to uncover more of the missing Galactic SNR population.

Abstract:The nearby Supernova 1987A was accompanied by a burst of neutrino emission, which indicates that a compact object (a neutron star or black hole) was formed in the explosion. There has been no direct observation of this compact object. In this work, we observe the supernova remnant with JWST spectroscopy, finding narrow infrared emission lines of argon and sulfur. The line emission is spatially unresolved and blueshifted in velocity relative to the supernova rest frame. We interpret the lines as gas illuminated by a source of ionizing photons located close to the center of the expanding ejecta. Photoionization models show that the line ratios are consistent with ionization by a cooling neutron star or a pulsar wind nebula. The velocity shift could be evidence for a neutron star natal kick.

Dusty Blastwaves of Two Young LMC Supernova Remnants: Constraints on Postshock Compression

Abstract:We present results from mid-IR spectroscopic observations of two young supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) done with the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}. We imaged SNRs B0509-67.5 and B0519-69.0 with {\it Spitzer} in 2005, and follow-up spectroscopy presented here confirms the presence of warm, shock heated dust, with no lines present in the spectrum. We use model fits to {\it Spitzer} IRS data to estimate the density of the postshock gas. Both remnants show asymmetries in the infrared images, and we interpret bright spots as places where the forward shock is running into material that is several times denser than elsewhere. The densities we infer for these objects depend on the grain omposition assumed, and we explore the effects of differing grain porosity on the model fits. We also analyze archival {\it XMM-Newton} RGS spectroscopic data, where both SNRs show strong lines of both Fe and Si, coming from ejecta, as well as strong O lines, which may come from ejecta or shocked ambient medium. We use model fits to IRS spectra to predict X-ray O line strengths for various grain models and values of the shock compression ratio. For 0509-67.5, we find that compact (solid) grain models require nearly all O lines in X-ray spectra to originate in reverse-shocked ejecta. Porous dust grains would lower the strength of ejecta lines relative to those arising in the shocked ambient medium. In 0519-69.0, we find significant evidence for a higher than standard compression ratio of 12, implying efficient cosmic-ray acceleration by the blast wave. A compact grain model is favored over porous grain models. We find that the dust-to-gas mass ratio of the ambient medium is significantly lower than what is expected in the ISM.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We report a detailed multi-wavelength study of the supernova remnant G296.5+10.0 using archival data from XMM–Newton and Fermi-LAT complemented with ATCA observations. In the X-ray band, we performed an adaptive smoothing on the double background subtracted images to construct an X-ray mosaic map with six individual observations. Below 2.0 keV, G296.5+10.0 is asymmetrical, with the south-east side of the radio shell brighter than the south-west one. The spatially resolved X-ray spectral study confirms the thermal origin of the plasma, with enhanced metal abundances, probably arising from ejecta material according to the H i and infrared ($140~{\mu \rm m}$) distributions. In the γ-ray band, we analysed 14 years of accumulated Fermi observations below 500 GeV via different fitting processes. To discuss the origin of the γ-ray emission, we compare the GeV results with H i structures probably associated with the SNR and with the radio spectral indices found at various positions towards the radio shell. Moreover, we identified diverse sources candidates to contribute γ-ray emissions observed. Also, we calculated the lepto-hadronic spectral energy distribution of the remnant for synchrotron, inverse Compton, Bremsstrahlung, and proton–proton processes. The emission at low energies can be explained by electron-synchrotron radiation, with a weak magnetic field of $B=25\, {\rm \mu G}$, while the γ-ray data can be explained by hadronic interactions. Employing the reddening-distance method, we computed a distance of 1.4 kpc for the SNR, implying an age of 14 000 yr.

Revisiting the dust destruction efficiency of supernovae

Abstract:Dust destruction by supernovae is one of the main processes removing dust from the interstellar medium (ISM). Estimates of the efficiency of this process, both theoretical and observational, typically assume a shock propagating into a homogeneous medium, whereas the ISM possesses significant substructure in reality. We self-consistently model the dust and gas properties of the shocked ISM in three supernova remnants (SNRs), using X-ray and infrared (IR) data combined with corresponding emission models. Collisional heating by gas with properties derived from X-ray observations produces dust temperatures too high to fit the far-IR fluxes from each SNR. An additional colder dust component is required, which has a minimum mass several orders of magnitude larger than that of the warm dust heated by the X-ray emitting gas. Dust-to-gas mass ratios indicate that the majority of the dust in the X-ray emitting material has been destroyed, while the fraction of surviving dust in the cold component is plausibly close to unity. As the cold component makes up virtually all the total dust mass, destruction timescales based on homogeneous models, which cannot account for multiple phases of shocked gas and dust, may be significantly overestimating actual dust destruction efficiencies, and subsequently underestimating grain lifetimes.

Supernova Remnants in the Local Group I: A model for the radio luminosity function and visibility times of supernova remnants

Abstract:Supernova remnants (SNRs) in Local Group galaxies offer unique insights into the origin of different types of supernovae. In order to take full advantage of these insights, one must understand the intrinsic and environmental diversity of SNRs in the context of their host galaxies. We introduce a semi-analytic model that reproduces the statistical properties of a radio continuum-selected SNR population, taking into account the detection limits of radio surveys, the range of SN kinetic energies, the measured ISM and stellar mass distribution in the host galaxy from multi-wavelength images and the current understanding of electron acceleration and field amplification in SNR shocks from first-principle kinetic simulations. Applying our model to the SNR population in M33, we reproduce the SNR radio luminosity function with a median SN rate of $\sim 3.1 \times 10^{-3}$ per year and an electron acceleration efficiency, $\epsilon_{\rm{e}} \sim 4.2 \times 10^{-3}$. We predict that the radio visibility times of $\sim 70\%$ of M33 SNRs will be determined by their Sedov-Taylor lifetimes, and correlated with the measured ISM column density, $N_H$ ($t_{\rm{vis}} \propto N_H^{-a}$, with $a \sim 0.33$) while the remaining will have visibility times determined by the detection limit of the radio survey. These observational constraints on the visibility time of SNRs will allow us to use SNR catalogs as `SN surveys' to calculate SN rates and delay time distributions in the Local Group.

Far-Ultraviolet to Near-Infrared Observations of SN 2023ixf: A high energy explosion engulfed in complex circumstellar material

Abstract:We present early-phase panchromatic photometric and spectroscopic coverage spanning far-ultraviolet (FUV) to the near-infrared (NIR) regime of the nearest hydrogen-rich core-collapse supernova in the last 25 years, SN 2023ixf. We observe early 'flash' features in the optical spectra due to a confined dense circumstellar material (CSM). We observe high-ionization absorption lines (FeII, MgII) in the ultraviolet spectra from very early on. We also observe a multi-peaked emission profile of H-alpha in the spectrum beginning ~16 d, which indicates ongoing interaction of the SN ejecta with a pre-existing shell-shaped CSM having an inner radius of ~75 AU and an outer radius of ~140 AU. The shell-shaped CSM is likely a result of enhanced mass loss ~35-65 years before the explosion assuming a standard Red-Supergiant wind. The UV spectra are dominated by multiple highly ionized narrow absorption features and broad emission features from elements such as C, N, O, Si, Fe, and Ni. Based on early light curve models of Type II SNe, we infer that the nearby dense CSM confined to (7+-3)e14cm (~45 AU) is a result of enhanced mass loss (10^{-3.0+-0.5} Msol/yr) two decades before the explosion.

Abstract:This document summarizes the discussions which took place during the PITT-PACC Workshop entitled "Non-Standard Cosmological Epochs and Expansion Histories," held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sept. 5-7, 2024. Much like the non-standard cosmological epochs that were the subject of these discussions, the format of this workshop was also non-standard. Rather than consisting of a series of talks from participants, with each person presenting their own work, this workshop was instead organized around free-form discussion blocks, with each centered on a different overall theme and guided by a different set of Discussion Leaders. This document is not intended to serve as a comprehensive review of these topics, but rather as an informal record of the discussions that took place during the workshop, in the hope that the content and free-flowing spirit of these discussions may inspire new ideas and research directions.

Abstract:The all-sky Planck survey in 9 frequency bands was used to search for emission from all 274 known Galactic supernova remnants. Of these, 16 were detected in at least two Planck frequencies. The radio-through-microwave spectral energy distributions were compiled to determine the mechanism for microwave emission. In only one case, IC 443, is there high-frequency emission clearly from dust associated with the supernova remnant. In all cases, the low-frequency emission is from synchrotron radiation. As predicted for a population of relativistic particles with energy distribution that extends continuously to high energies, a single power law is evident for many sources, including the Crab and PKS 1209-51/52. A decrease in flux density relative to the extrapolation of radio emission is evident in several sources. Their spectral energy distributions can be approximated as broken power laws, S-v proportional to v(-alpha), with the spectral index, alpha, increasing by 0.5-1 above a break frequency in the range 10-60 GHz. The break could be due to synchrotron losses.
Advanced γ-ray studies of the SNR Kes 79 region with Fermi Large Area Telescope

Abstract:Context. Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data and analysis tools improved a lot after the last analysis on Kes 79 (Auchettl et al. 2014) whose age is 4.4-6.7 kyr. Recent multi-wavelength studies on this mid-aged supernova remnant (SNR) revealed more physical properties of it, e.g., the age, the size, the shock-cloud interaction. Aims. In this work, we analyse the 11.5-year Fermi-LAT data to investigate the γ-ray features in this region. Then, we explore several models to infer their origins. Methods. We use the ≥5 GeV Fermi-LAT data to better distinguish sub-features in the SNR region, and then extend the energy down to 100 MeV to investigate the spectrum of the entire SNR region. We explored hadronic models with leaked cosmic-rays (CRs) from the shock-cloud collision, and also examine the leptonic contribution from pulsars in/around this region. Results. In our work, our result shows a more significant detection (∼34.8σ) with 4FGL J1852.4+0037e. And it also shows a low peak energy Ebreak ∼ 0.5 GeV with the spectrum down to 100 MeV with BPL model fit. In ≥5 GeV, we detect two extend sources, Src-N located to the north of the SNR and Src-S to the south of the SNR. They have different spectral shapes. Conclusions. Our hadronic model with leaked CRs from the SNR Kes 79 after the shock-cloud collision can predominantly reproduce the GeV emission at a northeast part of Src-S with typical values of parameters. Three known pulsars inside Src-S release a total power that is too low to account for the γ-ray emission. On the other hand, we found that the SNR cannot provide enough CRs reaching clouds at Src-N to explain the local GeV spectrum, and we propose that the Src-N emission may be dominated by a putative pulsarwind-nebula powered by PSR J1853+0056.

Abstract:In this Research Highlights, we summarize 31 contributions provided during the Workshop \textit{Multifrequency Behaviour of High Energy Cosmic Sources - XIV}, held in Palermo (Italy) from the 12th to the 17th of June 2023. We will start with the most recent discoveries in the field of gravitational waves (GWs). We will connect this topic to the contributions of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) associated with GWs and with the Kilonovae (KNe) hunting and, more in general, on GRBs. Continuing on high-energy astrophysics objects, we will delve into Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), neutrino astronomy and the study of the primordial universe, both from the space telescopes' observation and from the very recent proposals in terms of cosmological models. From the faraway universe, we will move to the more local scales and discuss the recent observations in Supernova Remnants (SNRs), massive star binaries, globular cluster dynamics, and exoplanets observed by Kepler.
