Abstract:The paper provides a review of A.M. Mathai's applications of the theory of special functions, particularly generalized hypergeometric functions, to problems in stellar physics and formation of structure in the Universe and to questions related to reaction, diffusion, and reaction-diffusion models. The essay also highlights Mathai's recent work on entropic, distributional, and differential pathways to basic concepts in statistical mechanics, making use of his earlier research results in information and statistical distribution theory. The results presented in the essay cover a period of time in Mathai's research from 1982 to 2008 and are all related to the thematic area of the gravitationally stabilized solar fusion reactor and fractional reaction-diffusion, taking into account concepts of non-extensive statistical mechanics. The time period referred to above coincides also with Mathai's exceptional contributions to the establishment and operation of the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, India, as well as the holding of the United Nations (UN)/European Space Agency (ESA)/National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States/ Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Workshops on basic space science and the International Heliophysical Year 2007, around the world. Professor Mathai's contributions to the latter, since 1991, are a testimony for his social conscience applied to international scientific activity.

A Half-Century Research Footpath in Statistical Physics

Abstract:We give an abridged account of a continued string of studies in condensed matter physics and in complex systems that span five decades. We provide links to access abstracts and full texts of a selected list of publications. The studies were carried out within a framework of methods and models, some developed in situ, of stochastic processes, statistical mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. The topics, techniques and outcomes reflect evolving interests of the community but also show a particular character that privileges the use of analogies or unusual viewpoints that unite the studies in distinctive ways. The studies have been grouped into thirty sets and these, in turn, placed into three collections according to the main underlying approach: stochastic processes, density functional theory, and nonlinear dynamics. We discuss the body of knowledge created by these research lines in relation to theoretical foundations and spread of subjects. We indicate unsuspected connections underlying different aspects of these investigations and also point out both natural and unanticipated perspectives for future developments. Finally, we refer to our most important and recent contribution: An answer with a firm basis to the long standing question about the limit of validity of ordinary statistical mechanics and the pertinence of Tsallis statistics.

Abstract:This book covers a wide range of problems involving the applications of stochastic processes, stochastic calculus, large deviation theory, group representation theory and quantum statistics to diverse fields in dynamical systems, electromagnetics, statistical signal processing, quantum information theory, quantum neural network theory, quantum filtering theory, quantum electrodynamics, quantum general relativity, string theory, problems in biology and classical and quantum fluid dynamics. The selection of the problems has been based on courses taught by the author to undergraduates and postgraduates in electronics and communication engineering. The theory of stochastic processes has been applied to problems of system identification based on time series models of the process concerned to derive time and order recursive parameter estimation followed by statistical performance analysis.

Abstract:I share some reminiscences of the late Steven Weinberg. Then I discuss a topic in quantum field theory which he taught me: the role of state wave functionals in deriving the $i\epsilon$ term of the Feynman propagator when using the functional formalism. This is perhaps a curiosity for in-out scattering amplitudes on flat space backgrounds, but it is has much greater significance for the in-in amplitudes of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism in cosmology. It also touches on the fate, about which Weinberg wondered, of the large logarithms one sometimes finds in quantum corrections from inflationary particle production.

Abstract:In the past 30 years there have been extensive discoveries in the theory of integrable statistical mechanical models including the discovery of non-linear differential equations for Ising model correlation functions, the theory of random impurities, level crossing transitions in the chiral Potts model and the use of Rogers-Ramanujan identities to generalize our concepts of Bose/Fermi statistics. Each of these advances has led to the further discovery of major unsolved problems of great mathematical and physical interest. I will here discuss the mathematical advances, the physical insights and extraordinary lack of visibility of this field of physics.

Abstract:Born in Sydney, Australia, on April 20, 1939, Chris Heyde shifted his interest from sport to mathematics thanks to inspiration from a schoolteacher. After earning an <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://M.Sc" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. degree from the University of Sydney and a Ph.D. from the Australian National University (ANU), he began his academic career in the United States at Michigan State University, and then in the United Kingdom at the University of Sheffield and the University of Manchester. In 1968, Chris moved back to Australia to teach at ANU until 1975, when he joined CSIRO, where he was Acting Chief of the Division of Mathematics and Statistics. From 1983 to 1986, he was a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Statistics at the University of Melbourne. Chris then returned to ANU to become the Head of the Statistics Department, and later the Foundation Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences (now the Mathematical Sciences Institute). Since 1993, he has also spent one semester each year teaching at the Department of Statistics, Columbia University, and has been the director of the Center for Applied Probability at Columbia University since its creation in 1993. Chris has been honored worldwide for his contributions in probability, statistics and the history of statistics. He is a Fellow of the International Statistical Institute and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and he is one of three people to be a member of both the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Social Sciences. In 2003, he received the Order of Australia from the Australian government. He has been awarded the Pitman Medal and the Hannan Medal. Chris was conferred a <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://D.Sc" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. honoris causa by University of Sydney in 1998. Abstract:This paper gives a short review of the history of statistical physics starting from D. Bernoulli's kinetic theory of gases in the 18th century until the recent new developments in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the last decades of this century. The most important contributions of the great physicists Clausius, Maxwell and Boltzmann are sketched. It is shown how the reversibility and the recurrence paradox are resolved within Boltzmann's statistical interpretation of the second law of thermodynamics. An approach to classical and quantum statistical mechanics is outlined. Finally the progress in nonequilibrium kinetic theory in the second half of this century is sketched starting from the work of N.N. Bogolyubov in 1946 up to the progress made recently in understanding the diffusion processes in dense fluids using computer simulations and analytical methods.

Four lectures on computational statistical physics

Abstract:In my lectures at the Les Houches Summer School 2008, I discussed central concepts of computational statistical physics, which I felt would be accessible to the very cross-cultural audience at the school. I started with a discussion of sampling, which lies at the heart of the Monte Carlo approach. I specially emphasized the concept of perfect sampling, which offers a synthesis of the traditional direct and Markov-chain sampling approaches. The second lecture concerned classical hard-sphere systems, which illuminate the foundations of statistical mechanics, but also illustrate the curious difficulties that beset even the most recent simulations. I then moved on, in the third lecture, to quantum Monte Carlo methods, that underly much of the modern work in bosonic systems. Quantum Monte Carlo is an intricate subject. Yet one can discuss it in simplified settings (the single-particle free propagator, ideal bosons) and write direct-sampling algorithms for the two cases in two or three dozen lines of code only. These idealized algorithms illustrate many of the crucial ideas in the field. The fourth lecture attempted to illustrate aspects of the unity of physics as realized in the Ising model simulations of recent years. More details on what I discussed in Les Houches, and wrote up (and somewhat rearranged) here, can be found in my book, "Statistical Mechanics: Algorithms and Computations", as well as in recent papers. Abstract:The education system for students in physics suffers (worldwide) from the absence of a deep course in probability and randomness. This is the real problem for students interested in quantum information theory, quantum optics, and quantum foundations. Here the primitive treatment of probability and randomness may lead to deep misunderstandings of theory and wrong interpretations of experimental results. Since during my visits (in 2013 and 2014) to IQOQI a number of students (experimenters!) asked me permanently about foundational problems of probability and randomness, especially inter-relation between classical and quantum structures, this year I gave two lectures on these problems. Surprisingly the interest of experiment-oriented students to mathematical peculiarities was very high. This (as well as permanent reminding of prof. Zeilinger) motivated me to write a text based on these lectures which were originally presented in the traditional black-board form. I hope that this might be useful for students from IQOQI as well as other young physicists.

Abstract:Over the last 25 years Monte Carlo programs were being developped in Cracow in the group guided by Prof. Stanislaw Jadach. Many of those programs became standard in their application domains. In the following let us review some aspects of such projects which were probably at the foundation of their success. We will concentrate on mathematical aspects of their design and history of their construction. It is rather difficult to cover 25 years of the research in a single talk. That is why, I have organized my presentation around Monte Carlo PHOTOS but stressing its relation to other activities and projects often realized together with Prof. Jadach. Many of omitted aspects will find their way into other perentations collected in this volume. I will concentrate on issues related to phasespace parametrization and spin amplitudes as used in our Monte Carlo programs such as MUSTRAAL, TAUOLA or KKMC and their similarities and differences with respect to solution used in PHOTOS.

Abstract:Among the impressive contributions of Andrej N. Kolmogorov's to mathematics in the 20th century, his 1954 invariant tori theorem is still little understood from a historical point of view [Dumas 2014]. Vladimir I. Arnold, who entered Moscow State University that same year and would became a student of Kolmogorov, 30 years after asked him about the origin of a research program to which Arnold himself gave a big contribution. In this paper we compare and put in historical and biographical context two different account's by Arnold on this conversation.

Abstract:In this report we discuss some results of non--commutative (quantum) probability theory relating the various notions of statistical independence and the associated quantum central limit theorems to different aspects of mathematics and physics including: $q$--deformed and free central limit theorems; the description of the master (i.e. central limit) field in matrix models along the recent Singer suggestion to relate it to Voiculescu's results on the freeness of the large $N$ limit of random matrices; quantum stochastic differential equations for the gauge master field in QCD; the theory of stochastic limits of quantum fields and its applications to stochastic bosonization of Fermi fields in any dimensions; new structures in QED such as a nonlinear modification of the Wigner semicircle law and the interacting Fock space: a natural explicit example of a self--interacting quantum field which exhibits the non crossing diagrams of the Wigner semicircle law.

The present articles have been prepared on the occasion of the Centenary (2006) of Majorana's birth. The preliminary notes for his Inaugural Lecture reveal Majorana's interest not only for scientific research, but also for the best didactical methods to be followed in order to teach classical and quantum physics in the most effective way (while his approach to Special Relativity is known to us from his lecture notes, published elesewhere).
