Abstract:We investigate several questions related to the notion of recognizable morphism. The main result is a new proof of Mossé's theorem and actually of a generalization to non primitive morphisms due to Berthé et al. We actually prove the result of Berthé et al. for the most general class of morphisms, including ones with erasable letters. It is derived from a result concerning elementary morphisms for which we also provide a new proof. We also show how to decide whether an injective morphism is recognizable on the full shift for aperiodic points.

Abstract:This note discusses the relationship between AU Introspection (i.e., an agent is unaware of some event, then she is unaware of that she is unaware of the event) and Symmetry (i.e., an agent is unaware of some event if and only if she is unaware of the complement set) for non-trivial unawareness (i.e., there is an event an agent is unaware of). without Negative Introspection using a set-theoretical approach in standard state-space models. Previous studies have explored the equivalence between Negative Introspection and AU Introspection, or the equivalence between Negative Introspection and Symmetry, by assuming Necessitation of the knowledge operator. As a corollary, AU Introspection is equivalent to Symmetry. However, no studies have shown the relationship between AU Introspection and Symmetry without Necessitation. Therefore, we explore this issue. Our main result shows that if the knowledge operator satisfies Monotonicity, Truth, and Positive introspection, then Modica and Rustichini's definition of unawareness leads to the equivalence of AU Introspection and Symmetry. In other words, we show that both AU Introspection and Symmetry hold without clashing with non-trivial unawareness.

Simpler algorithmically unrecognizable 4-manifolds

Abstract:Markov proved that there exists an unrecognizable 4-manifold, that is, a 4-manifold for which the homeomorphism problem is undecidable. In this paper we consider the question how close we can get to S^4 with an unrecognizable manifold. One of our achievements is that we show a way to remove so-called Markov's trick from the proof of existence of such a manifold. This trick contributes to the complexity of the resulting manifold. We also show how to decrease the deficiency (or the number of relations) in so-called Adian-Rabin set which is another ingredient that contributes to the complexity of the resulting manifold. Altogether, our approach allows to show that the connected sum #_9(S^2 x S^2) is unrecognizable while the previous best result is the unrecognizability of #_12(S^2 x S^2) due to Gordon.

Abstract:Plurality rule uniquely satisfies anonymity, monotonicity, neutrality, and tops-onlyness. However, it is not always able to produce resolute outcomes. We study singleton-valued refinements of plurality rule that satisfy all but one of these four axioms. Monotonicity is preserved by all refinements of plurality, whereas no refinement satisfies the remaining three except for a very limited case. We explore what dropping one of the three remaining axioms brings about towards singleton-valued refinements.

Cobham's famous theorem states that a set [math] is both [math]-recognizable and [math]-recognizable if and only if it is definable in Presburger arithmetic. Here we show the following strengthening: let [math] be [math]-recognizable, and let [math] be [math]-recognizable such that both [math] and [math] are not definable in Presburger arithmetic. Then the first-order logical theory of [math] is undecidable. This is in contrast to a well-known theorem of Büchi stating that the first-order logical theory of [math] is decidable.

Decidability of the isomorphism problem between multidimensional substitutive subshifts

Abstract:An important question in dynamical systems is the classification problem, i.e., the ability to distinguish between two isomorphic systems. In this work, we study the topological factors between a family of multidimensional substitutive subshifts generated by morphisms with uniform support. We prove that it is decidable to check whether two minimal aperiodic substitutive subshifts are isomorphic. The strategy followed in this work consists of giving a complete description of the factor maps between these subshifts. Then, we deduce some interesting consequences on coalescence, automorphism groups, and the number of aperiodic symbolic factors of substitutive subshifts. We also prove other combinatorial results on these substitutions, such as the decidability of defining a subshift, the computability of the constant of recognizability, and the conjugacy between substitutions with different supports.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Abstract:We prove the equivalence of the semantic version of Tarski's theorem on the undefinability of truth with a semantic version of the Diagonal Lemma, and also show the equivalence of syntactic Tarski's Undefinability Theorem with a weak syntactic diagonal lemma. We outline two seemingly diagonal-free proofs for these theorems from the literature, and show that syntactic Tarski's theorem can deliver Gödel-Rosser's Incompleteness Theorem.
