Abstract:In this study, the fabrication and characterization of a two-dimension vector bending sensor based on helical long-period gratings (HLPGs) in four core fiber (FCF) are demonstrated. The three outer cores of FCF are distributed at a regular triangle, and one inner core is distributed in the center of the FCF. The HLPGs with the period of 435 μm and period number of 60 were fabricated in FCF by a CO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> laser. Thanks to the special spatial distribution of the cores in FCF, the proposed FCF-HLPGs can achieve vector bending sensing. In the range from 0.7855 m −1 to 1.8157 m −1 , the bending sensing characteristics exhibit different sensitivities in the directions of 0° and 180°. The bending sensitivity of FCF-HLPGs at the direction of 0° and 180° are 7.27 nm/m −1 and -11.39 dB/m −1 , 21.37 nm/m −1 and -3.87 dB/m −1 , respectively. The FCF-HLPGs have a potential application in the field of vector bend sensing.
