Abstract:Why do the Chinese relate rhetoric only to stylistic devices in writing? This question, which has puzzled scholars for decades, is finally answered. Modern Chinese rhetoric began to form in the late 1800s when Chinese students learned Western rhetoric from their Japanese professors, who translated it into “the study of beautiful prose,” subsequently severing it from oratory. In the early twentieth century, scholars returning from Japan and the US integrated Japanese theories and Anglo-American figures of speech into Chinese literary and literacy traditions despite nativists' protests and appropriated them into a canon of aesthetics only for writing studies.

Abstract:Zhou Xian proposes that the linguistic turn has exerted a vital influence upon the current literary theory.A new paradigm of studying literary theory has been established and has brought about a change in literary assumptions.Then produce a new concept of textual production,and literature has become a product of subjective linguistic construction.Zhao Kuiying holds that the common effort of linguistic turn and the revival of rhetoric has greatly influenced people’s view of literature and lan- guage.The"pure poetics"has lost its foundation of existence in perspective of logic language,thus gives the birth of"linguistic-cultural poetics"which combines the studies of literature and culture. Zhao Yiheng believes that the revival of rhetoric is induced by the linguistic turn and an"overflowing of semiotics".Rhetoric proves to be a study of the basic expression of intention of human being,and the semiotic rhetoric has become the kernel of the new rhetoric.

Abstract:"Negative news" as a concept lacks perspicuity and accuracy,and easily brings various meanings,so it hasn't the character that the academic concept should have.It may be the special subjects' peg to stem the supervision by public opinion."Negative news" distinguishes with the concepts of "negative news information," "negative theme news," "critic news," "negative effects news." Journalism circle,industries and governments should caution the "negative news".Most of its meanings can be substituted by "negative theme news."

Abstract:Was there rhetoric thought in ancient China? In the 1970s,a few Western scholars said: that there was no rhetoric tradition in the East or Middle East.Up to now,has this changed or not? Should we interpret Chinese classic rhetoric technically or philosophically? Should we interpret it by the categories of ancient Greece,from a single cultural background or from multi-cultural and global perspectives? This is a proposition which has puzzled both occidental and oriental scholars.In order to highlight the extensive and profound thought of rhetorical culture in ancient China,this paper conducts a dialogue with such ancient Chinese masters as Confucius,Kuei Ku Tzu(鬼谷子),Han Fei Tzu(韩非子),Shusun Bao(叔孙豹) and Zhufu Yan(主父偃).The author tries to discuss and answer the following questions in this paper: Was there rhetoric in ancient China? Is the statement that no rhetoric tradition outside the West is cultural bias or arrogance? What is Chinese classic rhetoric? What concept of rhetoric should we take in times of globalization? What are the new trends of international rhetoric studies from the visual angle of Chinese classical rhetoric? The author thinks that rhetoric is a kind of moral cultivation,a life pursuit,a way which can make human life eternal and a tool of argument and persuasion.It is not only the important means of doing a good job in administering state affairs and ensuring national security,but also a social order,and a form of human culture and civilization.Rhetoric is also an effective way leading to benevolence,supreme good and universal harmony in the world.Global rhetoric is becoming a new social order of all human beings and a new vision of the confrontation and amalgamation of academic thoughts.

Advances in the History of Rhetoric

Abstract:This paper reviews and compares diverse rhetorical conceptualizations within Chinese rhetorical tradition during the fifth to third century B.C.E. Textual evidence shows that three schools of thoughts, namely Confucianism, Daoism, and Mohism, have contested with and challenged one another on the components and functions of rhetoric. Confucianism is more concerned with the moral character of the speaker while Mohism claims that rhetoric is used for mutual benefit and contains a rational element. Daoism, on the other hand, approaches rhetoric with a transcendental and dialectical outlook. This overview demonstrates the multi-faceted characteristics of ancient Chinese rhetoric.

Abstract:This paper defines language rhetoric act and visual rhetoric act, discusses the theoretical and practical values of visual rhetoric studies. The author thinks that visual rhetoric includes language visual rhetoric, image rhetoric and multiple vision rhetoric. Language visual rhetoric is different from image rhetoric in the nature of symbol, characteristics of sense organs, coding and decoding, nature of message sending and receiving, and their functions. Visual rhetoric is an active and intentional communication action for the best effects. The research of visual rhetoric is helpful to create new rhetoric theory, open up new fields of rhetoric, and solve practical problems of public rhetoric.

Abstract:Wang Guowei's theory about the poetic states of being"veiled( ge) and unveiled( buge) "derives from Schopenhauer's distinction between concept and intuition as well as the traditional dualistic antithesis of rationality and emotion of modern Western aesthetics. This paper argues that Wang's theory is displaced from and contradicted with the critical paradigm of"Fu-Bi- Xing( straightforward narrative,explicit comparison,implicit comparison) "in Chinese ancient poetics. Due to this displacement and contradiction,Wang Guowei regards Bi and Xing as"the veiled". The rupture inherent in Wang Guowei's poetics has long been overlooked and his theory of"artistic conception"has been treated as a fusion of Chinese and Western aesthetics.Moreover,critics have utilized the Western poetic categories such as"image"to interpret and reconstruct Chinese ancient poetics,claiming that it is a"modern interpretation"of Chinese ancient poetics. This methodology overshadows and oppresses some of the most significant spirits and values in traditional poetics and thus requires some serious reflections on our part.

Abstract:The article was written in response and gratutude to Chinese Professor Ma Yinmao in connection with his article ‘On the Academician Abdusalam A. Guseynov’s “negative ethics” and its borders’. It consists of three parts. In the first part, the author examines the question of why negative ethics is at the same time the beginning of a positive moral program of human activity. Proceeding from the belief that philosophy is an ethical project and an act is its first principle, he shows that the path of man as a living rational individual to being lies through denial. The act is deployed in two opposite directions: as a fact, it goes into the individual and is in the zone of his exclusive responsibility, and by its content it is included in the social being, its rationally organized cultural space. The contradictory integrity of the act is considered in the context of the concept of non-alibi in being introduced by M.M. Bakhtin. The second part is devoted to two main arguments against an expansive understanding of negative ethics. The first is that it does not take into account the existence of people with pure moral intentions. According to the second, the positive normative content of public morality falls out of the field of negative ethics. The third part discusses the moral paradoxes that the consciousness of one’s own moral imperfection is an indicator of one’s perfection and that good deeds should be done in secret.
The Rhetorical Application of Ancient Chinese Poetry and Idiom in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Abstract:Facing the rapid development of Chinese comprehensive strength and overseas Confucius Institute, teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress needs further study of rhetoric. The spread of Chinese splendid culture needs rhetoric as a support. An excellent Chinese teacher needs more in-depth understanding of rhetoric. This article from two aspects of ancient poetry and idioms illustrates the importance of rhetoric in teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress. The main rhetorical devices are metaphor, personification, allusion, exaggeration, repeated and intertextuality, which explore the secrets and greatness of the Chinese rhetorical applications. At the same time, the paper has made some analyses and put forward some suggestions for the problems which may occur to the application of ancient poetry and idoms in the teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress.

Abstract:On the ascending of the theoretical resources of rhetoric and communication, this paper analyses the natures of rhetoric and communication, and discusses the relationship between them. And then the paper compares the similarities and differences on research objects, research methods and theoretical systems of the two disciplines. The author finds that rhetoric and communication are consistent in nature. They are all symbolic acts of human being. In the process of rhetoric and communication studies,the two disciplines have been infiltrated and syncretized to some extent. Their academic natures, research objects, approaches and outcomes are basically consistent on some sides. The studies of rhetoric and communication should benefit from each other. Rhetoric studies should use communication theories as for reference and open up research fields in every human communication form.

Abstract:Cao Shi-zhu's A Study of Chinese Character Rhetoric is a new contribution to the study of Chinese rhetoric after the work of Chinese Rhetoric Study. This work breaks forth a new thinking mode for the further development of the Chinese rhetoric.In this work,it is agreed that the forms of Chinese characters are the material form of Chinese rhetoric,that Chinese character is a tool for thinking,and that the Chinese character rhetoric and Chinese rhetoric are of the same contextual level.This work makes a systematic trimming and analyzing of the de-construction and re-combination of Chinese characters.It makes a tentative study of the marginal issues of the relationship between Chinese character rhetoric and Chinese rhetoric.

Abstract:Mr. Wang Li covered a wide range and made a unique study of Chinese rhetorical forms. In his writings,he discussed as many as 22 kinds of rhetorical forms,some of which had never been touched upon by other rhetoricians. In his discussion about rhetoric forms in both modern Chinese and ancient Chinese,he associated them closely with Chinese grammar. He was quite different from other rhetoricians in his way of doing research. Especially when he dealt with modern Chinese rhetoric,he completely abandoned the method of "first studying a foreign system,and then fitting it with examples selected from the Chinese language ", which was often found in the books on rhetoric from the 1930s. He systematically studied A Dream of Red Mansions,from which he selected examples. As a result,he was rarely affected by Western rhetoric,and he got many original ideas with his conclusions in conformity with the reality of Chinese rhetoric. Mr. Wang Li made a holistic and profound analysis of antithesis in the Chinese language. As he had not only made a delicate description of it structurally,but also made a high generalization and analysis of it theoretically,his statement about antithesis in the Chinese language is very helpful for us to have a correct understanding of the characteristics of the Chinese language. Mr. Wang Li’s study on the issue concerning ellipsis in the Chinese language revealed the features of the close association of Chinese grammar with rhetoric,which is far more comprehensive than other general rhetorical works.
The Discipline of Happiness: The Foucauldian Use of the “Positive Energy” Discourse in China’s Ideological Works

Abstract:One important question about ideological works in China concerns the tension between mobilisation (encouraging public expression) and control (limiting public expression). Recently Xi Jinping’s administration has doubled down on both strategies. To study the rationale of this seemingly self-contradictory move, the authors examine the recently prominent ideological discourse of “positive energy.” Through a combination of online ethnography and discourse analysis using Foucauldian methods, we find that the discourse borrows and evolves from previous ideological works, but most importantly and distinguishably features a more dispersive, rather than centralised power structure. It penetrates popular culture and private lives, and by doing so disciplines people’s subjectivities, rather than only aiming at top-down persuasion or control. The logic of “positive energy” produces self-disciplined docile subjects, and quietly resolves the tension between mobilisation and control by having subjects internalise the interests of the state as their own good.

Abstract:Sir LI Jin-xi’s Chinese rhetoric studies achieved remarkably and with characteristics, which are represented in five aspects: (i) ingenious combination of Chinese grammar and rhetoric study, which explicates effectively various types of Chinese phenomena that are hard to explain in either way alone; (ii) a holistic view of the rhetoric study, which is one of the earliest complete disciplinary theoretic system, which hence gains an initiative status in the history of Chinese rhetoric; (iii) appropriate summarization of relevant rhetoric principles and due attention to the guiding function of the theory per se; (iv) attention to the integration of the inheritance of traditional attempts and the references to classical and foreign views for his unique rhetoric theory system; and (v) advances from the perspective of development, which points out a correct direction for later Chinese rhetorical studies.

Abstract:The development of language is based on the usage of it.Without the usage of language,there is no development.The generation and development of such words as indicators of resemblance,metonymy words and onomatopoeias in Chinese and classifiers all have close relations with rhetoric.Grammar and pronunciation are the same as vocabulary.Thus,from the view of academic principles,the research on the history of Chinese should include the research on the history of Chinese rhetoric besides the history of Chinese phonetics,Chinese grammar and Chinese vocabulary.Only in this way can we finally establish an integral system of the history of the development of Chinese.There are at least three reasons: First,the research on the history of Chinese can not be without the problems of rhetoric.The generations of many linguistic phenomena need to be explained by the theories of rhetoric.Second,the research on the history of Chinese with the complement of rhetoric can help to get the correct explanation of the meanings of the words.Third,the research with rhetoric is beneficial to the textual research and collation.
