Of Classic Western Poetics

Abstract:On Western Classical PoeticsLU Yang(Department of Chinese, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200433, China) Poetics,in a specific sense,is concerned with theory and criticism of poetry,while poetics,in a general sense,can be regarded as the synonym of literary theory. Since Aristotle,the Western poetics had been dominated by mimesis for more than two thousand years till the 19th century when romanticism turned to the inner world. However, a return to Aristotelian paradigm e-merged in the past century. Classical poetics won its full connotation during Renaissance,a period characterized with rediscovery of ancient writers and writings and advocacy of humanism in the idea,style,genre and subject. After 17th century, poetics was divorced from rhetoric in its transition from neo-classicism to romanticism. It’ s no wonder to witness a symposium of poetic spec-ter and the absolute spirit in Hegel’ s Lectures on Aesthetics.
