Abstract:Abstract Chinese aesthetics mainly derives from Confucianism and Taoism. This essay attempts to revisit the main theories that run through Confucian and Taoist aesthetics in order to make them comprehensible within a broader global context. Aesthetics in Confucianism pertains to fields as various as literature, art, music and the natural environment. It holds the idea of ren 仁 (human-heartedness) as the essential attribute of beauty. In comparison, Taoist aesthetics emphasizes the centrality of tao 道 (way), which transpires through naturalness, and, as such, considers natural forms to offer the highest degree of beauty. In order to understand variations of representation and interpretation in Confucian and Taoist aesthetics, the essay discusses accordingly the three fundamentals of Chinese aesthetics: beauty, feeling of beauty, and artistic image. This comparative study will hopefully bring to light differences and similarities between two traditions, which may also resonate within the wider context of modern global aesthetics.

Abstract:The ideology about the relation between goodness and beauty for Confucius and the early Confucians is the continuation of the aesthetic tradition long before Confucius’s time, which sees more value in Yuejiao, namely, music/beauty education, than in Lijiao, Moral education. No doubt Confucius’s aesthetic idea is featured as the juxtaposition of Li and Yue, goodness and beauty. But we must not forget that Confucius, taking himself as a preserver of the sages’ tradition, personally values Yue (music/beauty) over Li (ritual/moral). It is in this context that we argue that taking the unity of beauty and goodness as a Confucian aesthetic feature is a misinterpretation of his teaching and is poles apart from the ancient Chinese aesthetic tradition and from Confucius’ aesthetics.

Abstract:As the core of John Keats' poetics, based on rich and colorful poetry creation practice, in the background of deep emotional experience, "negative capability" promoted an intervention of poem creation subject that was different from the one that pursued the essence of matter by logical reasoning and contained a dynamic and developing process of relationship between the subject and the object: keep a certain psychological distance by the subject's realization of sophomoric of the object and regard the object as the existence equal to the subject; restore the free and natural state of the object through the subject's imagination; further refine the relationship between the subject and the object by emotional experience and change the equal relation between subject and object into harmony of subject and object. Although Keats's poetic thoughts originated from the specific cultural tradition and appeared in the context of the times, it had the light of modernity that transcended his times. The awareness of respecting and liberating object and the harmony of subject and object contained in "negative capability" had an important influence on Keats' famous theory of "poet being no character", reflected an open cognitive style and contained the eco-ethical thought of pursuing harmonious co-existence between human and nature.

Abstract:The essence of Wang Bi's philosophy is non-being. The meaning of "non-being" makes the awakening of man possible, and furthermore, makes the awakening of literature and arts possible. Mood, as a core concept in Chinese aesthetics, has transcendence from concrete to abstract, from existence to non-existence and from finite to infinite. It also has a character of "non-being" and there must be an inner connection between them. The experience of "non-being", as part of Wang's philosophy, has inner influence on the experience of beauty.

His category of gewu laid thefoundation for the transition and made the "Thing" one of the focal points of the Chineseaesthetics. Abstract:Despite the prevalence of aesthetic education as one of the main developmental objectives in curricular worldwide, the mainstream philosophical discourse on its definition is predominately framed by western philosophy due to a paucity of cross-cultural studies on the subject. The article aims to achieve a contemporary understanding of aesthetic education from both the Chinese and Western aesthetic perspectives. Through the lens of postmodernism, the relationship between Daoist aesthetics and the western postmodern aesthetic perspectives, particularly the Deleuzian concept of rhizome, is identified. Both aesthetic perspectives concern de-authorship and promote self-consciousness/self-awareness. The study reconceptualises the functions of aesthetic education with the Chinese aesthetic philosophy that promotes the nurture of better people through benevolence.

Abstract:Adorno' s criticism of phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger is essentially a dialogue between freedom and truth,whereas as a conscientious consciousness of non - identity,negative dialectics signifies different approaches to their directions of truth and freedom in the conflict between the critical theory and Heidegger' s phenomenology.No excuses or reasons for criticisms of principls and standpoints should be resorted to Adorno' s criticism of phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger, which should be made a turning point at which such questions as how to develop contemporary aesthetics in China are to be reflected.

Abstract:The beauty of poetic sentiment,silence and nature in the contemporary Chinese literature,is related with Taoist aesthetic orientation.From the suspicion,negation,being against dissimilation and advoca- ting individual spirit in the contemporary Chinese literature,we can find the resource support of Taoist culture and tradition.Beyond the main topics such as equity,justice,democracy and legality,the contemporary Chi- nese literature inherits and surpasses the spiritual resource of Taoist culture,and participates in the construc- tion of contemporary culture.Taoist culture does not regard the moral construction as the main purpose,and it would not conquer the spiritual space of human being with logical deduction.Instead,it pursues the signifi- cance of the relationship between individual existence and the world from individual cognition,independent character and intuitionistic aesthetic style.Therefore,Taoist culture enriches the expressive mode of contem- porary Chinese literature and takes part in the creationary construction of it.

Abstract:The dualistic epistemology is one of serious obstacles to the development of Chinese contemporary aesthetic theory,for this reason,the dualism between subject and object must be cast aside.Beauty is not ready-made object but exists in aesthetic activity,which is a starting point in aesthetic research and a basic practice of human beings,so the author advances a new view that beauty in a broad sense is a state of life.In brief,one of valuable attempts is to form practical existential aesthetics for giving impetus to Chinese aesthetic research.

Abstract:Aesthetic transcendence is a problem that the Chinese literary theory and aesthetics are facing in the 21th century.The peculiar nature of aesthetic transcendence lies in the realization of inner freedom in one's life.Cultural studies are only complement and improvement to the conception and methods of traditional literary studies,therefore can not take the place of aesthetic transcendence,but rather,takes it as its ultimate pursuit.Aesthetic transcendence is an organic unity between individuality and sociality in the sense of becoming,for which modern artistic activity like surrealism has provided a convincing evidence.The aesthetic can only transcend the reasonable,but can not transcend reason manifested in the protective forces of existence,thus realizing the organic unity between sensibility and reason through consciousness that transcends its temporary relief to itself,through individual consciousness that transcends universal consciousness,and through man's changing nature that transcends the nature of general freedom.

Abstract:From the 1990s, with deeper influence of modernity, Chinese aesthetic research often regards aesthetics as the activity full of pure individuality, which transcends or gives priority to sociality. However,this understanding misunderstands modernity,and this understanding also sees both individuality and sociality, which seems fixed and divisive each other, as the preexistent things. Hence this understanding also insists on metaphysical standpoint.To clear up the long time controversy of this significant aesthetic problem, this paper is based on Practice-ontology aesthetics and the purpose of transcending metaphysics, and points that aesthetics is generative oneness of individuality and sociality. Marx and Heidegger left important thinking clues. What's more,the actual aesthetic activities prove this nature.

Abstract:Neo-Confucianism’s understanding of the relationship between heaven and man greatly reflects their view of nature and their aesthetic pursuits. Confucianism revolves around the perfection of human virtue, and the profundity of its theory of the relationship between heaven and humanity lies in the recognition of the value of all natural things. Therefore, the Confucian view of nature and humans emphasises the Unity of Heaven and Man by virtue. The concept of ‘the Unity of Heaven and Man by virtue’ unfolds the characteristic of symbiosis between humans and all things, which is manifested by the natural view of oneness of all things. The virtue of Sheng reflects the natural aesthetic consciousness of Confucianism. In Confucianism, virtue and beauty are unified, and this characteristic is mainly manifested as the beauty of ShengSheng. Sheng is not only a kind of great virtue but also a kind of great beauty, and the idea of the beauty of ShengSheng embodies the Confucian pursuit of the beauty of natural life.Contribution: This article mainly examines the relationship between humans and heaven in Neo-Confucianism. In particular, it focusses on the thought of ‘the Unity of Heaven and Man’, and analyses the natural aesthetic influence of this thought.

Abstract:Influenced by philosophical thoughts of Daoism and Zen Buddhism,an important theory of hedging the artificial trace by modeling nature is created in the field of China's aesthetics,which has deeply influenced the formation of aesthetic characteristics in China as well as Chinese people's appreciation of beauty and art.By analyzing the formation and connotation of this theory,this paper investigates into the techniques of evading the artificial trace and thoughts including transcending beauty and ugliness as well as releasing from emotional bondage.It argues that the essential point of advocating natural beauty and rejecting artificial marks lies in the pursuit of a world with true meaning and takes the settlement of human life as the final goal.Though the idea is biased,it has an important theoretical value.

Abstract:In this paper, I will show that classical Chinese artists adopted either Daoist or Chan Buddhist meditation to cultivate their mind to be in accord with the Dao, and that their view of the detached mental state as an ideal mental state for art appears to fit in with Kant's notion of aesthetic freedom. Even though it might be claimed that sensibilities are stressed over rationality in the classical Chinese artistic tradition, I suggest that the detached mental state cultivated through Daoist or Chan Buddhist meditation and experienced in artistic practice helps artists restore a balanced human nature. By projecting Schiller's account of the play drive, and the account of aesthetic freedom he developed from Kant's ideas, into the classical Chinese artistic context, I attempt to explain the balanced nature realised through artistic play by classical Chinese artists and point out the differences behind the parallels between these two approaches.

Abstract:Both Confucius and Lao-tzu had the thought and action of being a "recluse" to express their dissatisfaction with social realities. Associating with their doctrine and ideological thoughts,Confucius was disappointed with the bulgy desire as to break the norms of the "System of Ceremonial Music",while Lao-tzu lamented the "System" beguiled people to take it as "unquestionable truth" thus to entail endless harms for later generation. Chinese arts acquire its value features in the melancholy of Confucius and Lao-tzu.

Abstract:This paper interprets the theoretical framework of the pre-Qin Taoist deep ecology from the aesthetical perspective. Its theoretical framework is based on the following: (1)Taoism follows as the ultimate norm is the core of the framework, from which we can draw the principle of eco-centric equality, that is, everything is equal. (2) Following this principle, we can deduce a set of rules for actions, which involvesno interference with nature. (3) People can identify more and more with nature through introspection and character-cultivation and eventually reach the stage of ecological self, that is, perfect carefree state in Taoism.

Abstract:As an important concept of Confucianism,the Mean is the core and the highest ethics of Confucianism.The Mean isn't special and can apply to the daily life and behavior of most people.The Mean has the three major meanings that are related and successive: taking hold of two extremes and determining the Mean;the Mean is a golden rule;a golden rule is a permanent solution.Therefore,the doctrine of the Mean inherently the dialectic of easier said than done and the dialectic of more difficult said than done,that is,the Mean is the most simple and the highest ethics.In order to achieve the Mean,there is no shortcut,people should act sure-footedly and make efforts a hundred and even thousand times than others.Therefore,the doctrine of the Mean points out a feasible path and method for people's moral practice.
