Abstract:This article holds a view that although there are some weak points,the aesthetic thoughts of Liu Haisu,focusing on the issue of "human" and based upon a transcendental ground,persistently promote the individuality and creativity of mankind,which remains to be the perspective of "Enlightenment" in the May 4th Movement of 1919 as well as the New Culture Movement.This thus constitutes a profound and continuous trend in the revolution of Chinese modern fine arts.In a revolutionary context where the aspiration "to save the nation from subjugation and ensure its survival" prevailed over the acclaim "to enlighten",Liu Haisu hammed up the idea advocated by Cai Yuanpei that "the art education,instead of religion,bears the burden to cultivate the people".Liu Haisu,therefore,basing himself on "Enlightenment",develops "pure aesthetics"-oriented revolutionary thoughts of art education,which,purporting that Chinese aesthetic revolution functions as an enlightenment similar to Renaissance,regards the representation of life as its essence and takes the fine arts as the propellant of social progress.
