Mr. Wang Li’s Study on Chinese Rhetorical Forms

Abstract:Mr. Wang Li covered a wide range and made a unique study of Chinese rhetorical forms. In his writings,he discussed as many as 22 kinds of rhetorical forms,some of which had never been touched upon by other rhetoricians. In his discussion about rhetoric forms in both modern Chinese and ancient Chinese,he associated them closely with Chinese grammar. He was quite different from other rhetoricians in his way of doing research. Especially when he dealt with modern Chinese rhetoric,he completely abandoned the method of "first studying a foreign system,and then fitting it with examples selected from the Chinese language ", which was often found in the books on rhetoric from the 1930s. He systematically studied A Dream of Red Mansions,from which he selected examples. As a result,he was rarely affected by Western rhetoric,and he got many original ideas with his conclusions in conformity with the reality of Chinese rhetoric. Mr. Wang Li made a holistic and profound analysis of antithesis in the Chinese language. As he had not only made a delicate description of it structurally,but also made a high generalization and analysis of it theoretically,his statement about antithesis in the Chinese language is very helpful for us to have a correct understanding of the characteristics of the Chinese language. Mr. Wang Li’s study on the issue concerning ellipsis in the Chinese language revealed the features of the close association of Chinese grammar with rhetoric,which is far more comprehensive than other general rhetorical works.
