Abstract:We investigate the type I dual pairs over the quaternion algebra H, namely the family of dual pairs (Sp(p,q),O∗(2n)). We give a complete and explicit description of duality correspondence for p+q⩽n as well as some of the cases for p+q>n, in terms of the Langlands parameters.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Oort conjecture concerning the non-existence of Shimura subvarieties contained generically in the Torelli locus in the Siegel modular variety A(g). Using the poly-stability of Higgs bundles on curves and the slope inequality of Xiao on fibered surfaces, we show that a Shimura curve C is not contained generically in the Torelli locus if its canonical Higgs bundle contains a unitary Higgs subbundle of rank at least (4g + 2)/5. From this we prove that a Shimura subvariety of SU(n, 1) type is not contained generically in the Torelli locus when a numerical inequality holds, which involves the genus g, the dimension n + 1, the degree 2d of CM field of the Hermitian space, and the type of the symplectic representation defining the Shimura subdatum. A similar result holds for Shimura subvarieties of SO(n, 2) type, defined by spin groups associated to quadratic spaces over a totally real number field of degree at least 6 subject to some natural constraints of signatures.

We prove also Luna's conjecture saying that these varieties are spherical, i.e. admit a dense orbit of a Borel subgroup.

Abstract:This paper concerns the characteristic-$p$ fibers of $\mathsf{GU}(q-2,2)$ Shimura varieties, which classify abelian varieties with additional structure. These Shimura varieties admit two stratifications of interest: the Ekedahl-Oort stratification, based on the isomorphism class of the $p$-torsion subgroup scheme, and the Newton stratification, based on the isogeny class of the $p$-divisible group. It is natural to ask which Ekedahl-Oort strata intersect the unique closed Newton stratum, called the supersingular locus. In this paper, we present several novel techniques that give information about the interaction between the two stratifications for general signature $(q-2,2)$, and as an application, we completely answer this question for the signature $(3,2)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notion of incoherent definite orthogonal and Hermitian spaces, and use their neighboring spaces as a tool for the local study of orthogonal and unitary Shimura varieties. This generalizes earlier work, using incoherent definite quaternion algebras in the local study of Shimura curves.

We define the Goren–Oort stratification of the characteristic-$p$fiber of a quaternionic Shimura variety of maximal level at$p$. We show that each stratum is a$(\mathbb{P}^{1})^{r}$-bundle over other quaternionic Shimura varieties (for an appropriate integer$r$). As an application, we give a necessary condition for the ampleness of a modular line bundle on a quaternionic Shimura variety in characteristic$p$.

Abstract:We develop a new method of constructing non-arithmetic lattices in the projective orthogonal group $\text{PO}(n,1)$ for every integer $n$ larger than one. The technique is to consider anti-holomorphic involutions on a complex arithmetic ball quotient, glue their fixed loci along geodesic subspaces, and show that the resulting metric space carries canonically the structure of a complete real hyperbolic orbifold. The volume of various of these non-arithmetic orbifolds can be explicitly calculated.

Abstract:In this paper we study the BM quasi-Hermitian varieties introduced in [A. Aguglia, A. Cossidente, G. Korchmàros, On quasi-Hermitian Varieties, J. Combin. Des. 20 (2012) 433-447.] in characteristc $2$ and dimension $3$. After a brief investigation of their combinatorial properties, we first show that all of these varieties are projectively equivalent in non-zero even characteristic, exhibiting a behavior which is strikingly different from what happens in odd characteristic, see [A. Aguglia, L. Giuzzi, On the equivalence of certain quasi-Hermitian varieties, J. Combin. Des. 1-15 (2022)]. This completes the classification project started in that paper. Next, by using previous results, we explicitly determine and investigate the structure of the full collineation group stabilizing these varieties. Finally, as a byproduct of our investigation, we also construct and a family of simple orthogonal arrays $OA(q^5,q^4,q,2)$ with entries in ${\mathbb F}_q$ where $q$ is a power of $2$.

Abstract:We work towards completely classifying all bielliptic Shimura curves $X_0^D(N)$ with nontrivial level $N$ coprime to $D$, extending a result of Rotger that provided such a classification for level one. Combined with prior work, this allows us to determine the list of all relatively prime pairs $(D,N)$ for which $X_0^D(N)$ has infinitely many degree $2$ points. As an application, we use these results to make progress on determining which curves $X_0^D(N)$ have sporadic points. Using tools similar to those that appear in this study, we also determine all of the geometrically trigonal Shimura curves $X_0^D(N)$ with $\gcd(D,N)=1$ (none of which are trigonal over $\mathbb{Q}$).

Generalised theta operators on unitary Shimura varieties

Abstract:The main result of this paper is the construction of a new class of weight shifting operators, similar to the theta operators of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1902.10911" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1902.10911">arXiv:1902.10911</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1712.06969" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1712.06969">arXiv:1712.06969</a> and others, which are defined on the lower Ekedahl-Oort strata of the geometric special fibre of unitary Shimura varieties of signature $(n-1, 1)$ at a good prime $p$, split in the in the reflex field $E$, which we assume to be quadratic imaginary. These operators act on certain graded sheaves which are obtained from the arithmetic structure of the EO strata, in particular the $p$-rank on each stratum. We expect these operators to have applications to the study of Hecke-eigensystems of modular forms modulo $p$ and generalisations of the weight part of Serre's conjecture.

Abstract:We give a lattice-theoretic characterization for a manifold of $\mathrm{OG}10$ type to be birational to some moduli space of (twisted) sheaves on a K3 surface. We apply it to the Li-Pertusi-Zhao variety of $\mathrm{OG}10$ type associated to any smooth cubic fourfold. Moreover we determine when a birational transformation is induced by an automorphism of the K3 surface and we use this to classify all induced birational symplectic involutions.
