Abstract:Given a smooth variety $X$ and an effective Cartier divisor $D \subset X$, we show that the cohomological Chow group of 0-cycles on the double of $X$ along $D$ has a canonical decomposition in terms of the Chow group of 0-cycles ${\rm CH}_0(X)$ and the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$ on $X$. When $X$ is projective, we construct an Albanese variety with modulus and show that this is the universal regular quotient of ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$. As a consequence of the above decomposition, we prove the Roitman torsion theorem for the 0-cycles with modulus. We show that ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$ is torsion-free and there is an injective cycle class map ${\rm CH}_0(X|D) \hookrightarrow K_0(X,D)$ if $X$ is affine. For a smooth affine surface $X$, this is strengthened to show that $K_0(X,D)$ is an extension of ${\rm CH}_1(X|D)$ by ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$.

Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.

Abstract:In this paper, we proved generating functions of Gromov-Witten cycles of the elliptic orbifold lines with weights (3,3,3), (4,4,2), and (6,3,2) are cycle-valued quasi-modular forms. This is a generalization of Milanov and Ruan's work on cycle-valued level. First we construct a global cohomology field theory (CohFT) for simple elliptic singularities (modulo an extension problem) and prove its modularity. Then, we apply Teleman's reconstruction theorem to prove mirror theorems on cycled-valued level and match it with a CohFT from Gromov-Witten theory of a corresponding <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://orbifold.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> solves the extension property as well as inducing the modularity for a Gromov-Witten CohFT.

Hecke and Galois Properties of Special Cycles on Unitary Shimura Varieties

Abstract:We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Using methods and recent results of Koskivirta, we prove the congruence relation in this case. Finally, using the action of the local Hecke algebra on the Bruhat--Tits building, we establish explicit relations (distribution relations) between the Hecke action and the Galois action on the special cycles. These relations are key for a work in progress by the author on constructing a new Euler system from these cycles and using it to prove instances of the Bloch{Kato{ Beilinson conjecture for certain Galois representations associated to automorphic forms on unitary groups.

Zero-cycles in families of rationally connected varieties

Abstract:We study zero-cycles in families of rationally connected varieties. We show that for a smooth projective scheme over a henselian discrete valuation ring the restriction of relative zero cycles to the special fiber induces an isomorphism on Chow groups if the special fiber is separably rationally connected. We further extend this result to certain higher Chow groups and develop conjectures in the non-smooth case. Our main results generalise a result of Kollár [31].

Abstract:We use the method of Bruinier--Raum to show that symmetric formal Fourier--Jacobi series, in the cases of norm-Euclidean imaginary quadratic fields, are Hermitian modular forms. Consequently, combining a theorem of Yifeng Liu, we deduce Kudla's conjecture on the modularity of generating series of special cycles of arbitrary codimension for unitary Shimura varieties defined in these cases.

Noether-Lefschetz cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:The locus of non-simple abelian varieties in the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties gives rise to Noether-Lefschetz cycles. We study their intersection theoretic properties using the tautological projection constructed in [CMOP24], and show that projection defines a homomorphism when restricted to cycles supported on that locus. Using Hecke correspondences and the pullback by Torelli we prove that $[\mathcal {A}_1 \times \mathcal A_{g-1}]$ is not tautological in the sense of [vdG99] for $g=12$ and $g\geq 16$ even. We also explore the connections between Noether-Lefschetz cycles and the Gromov-Witten theory of a moving elliptic curve.

On zero-cycles of varieties over Laurent fields

Abstract:We generalize a recent result of Pavic--Schreieder regarding the surjectivity of the obstruction morphism defined in [PS23]. As a consequence of this result, we show that geometrically (retract) rational varieties over a Laurent field of characteristic 0, which admit a strictly semi-stable model, have trivial Chow group of zero-cycles. Our key new ingredient comes from toric geometry.

Abstract:We consider the generating series of special cycles on $\mathcal{A}_1(N)\times \mathcal{A}_g(N)$, with full level $N$ structure, valued in the cohomology of degree $2g$. The modularity theorem of Kudla-Millson for locally symmetric spaces implies that these series are modular. When $N=1$, the images of these loci in $\mathcal{A}_g$ are the $d$-elliptic Noether-Lefschetz loci, which are conjectured to be modular. In the appendix, it is shown that the resulting modular forms are nonzero for $g=2$ when $N\geq 11$ and $N\neq 12$.

Modularity of higher theta series II: Chow group of the generic fiber

Abstract:Higher theta series on moduli spaces of Hermitian shtukas were constructed by Feng--Yun--Zhang and conjectured to be modular, parallel to classical conjectures in the Kudla program. In this paper we prove the modularity of higher theta series after restriction to the generic locus. The proof is an upgrade, using motivic homotopy theory, of earlier work of Feng--Yun--Zhang which established generic modularity of $\ell$-adic realizations. In the process, we develop some general tools of broader utility. One such is the "motivic sheaf-cycle correspondence", a categorical trace formalism for extracting computations in the Chow group from computations in Voevodsky's derived category of motives. Another new tool is the "derived homogeneous Fourier transform", which we use to implement a form of Fourier analysis for motives.

On the Chow ring of Cynk-Hulek Calabi-Yau varieties and Schreieder varieties

Abstract:This note is about certain locally complete families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Cynk and Hulek, and certain varieties constructed by Schreieder. We prove that the cycle class map on the Chow ring of powers of these varieties admits a section, and that these varieties admit a multiplicative self-dual Chow-Kuenneth decomposition. As a consequence of both results, we prove that the subring of the Chow ring generated by divisors, Chern classes, and intersections of two cycles of positive codimension injects into cohomology, via the cycle class map. We also prove that the small diagonal of Schreieder surfaces admits a decomposition similar to that of K3 surfaces. As a by-product of our main result, we verify a conjecture of Voisin concerning zero-cycles on the self-product of Cynk-Hulek Calabi-Yau varieties, and in the odd-dimensional case we verify a conjecture of Voevodsky concerning smash-equivalence. Finally, in positive characteristic, we show that the supersingular Cynk-Hulek Calabi-Yau varieties provide examples of Calabi-Yau varieties with "degenerate" motive.

Abstract:We prove that the moduli space of rational curves with cyclic action, constructed in our previous work, is realizable as a wonderful compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a product of projective spaces. By proving a general result on such wonderful compactifications, we conclude that this moduli space is Chow-equivalent to an explicit toric variety (whose fan can be understood as a tropical version of the moduli space), from which a computation of its Chow ring follows.

Tautological and non-tautological cycles on the moduli space of abelian varieties

Abstract:The tautological Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ was defined and calculated by van der Geer in 1999. By studying the Torelli pullback of algebraic cycles classes from $\mathcal{A}_g$ to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}}$ of genus $g$ of curves of compact type, we prove that the product class $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]\in \mathsf{CH}^{5}(\mathcal{A}_6)$ is non-tautological, the first construction of an interesting non-tautological algebraic class on the moduli spaces of abelian varieties. For our proof, we use the complete description of the the tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ in genus 6 conjectured by Pixton and recently proven by Canning-Larson-Schmitt. The tautological ring $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_6^{\mathrm{ct}})$ has a 1-dimensional Gorenstein kernel, which is geometrically explained by the Torelli pullback of $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_5]$. More generally, the Torelli pullback of the difference between $[\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}]$ and its tautological projection always lies in the Gorenstein kernel of $\mathsf{R}^*(\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{ct}})$. The product map $\mathcal{A}_1\times \mathcal{A}_{g-1}\rightarrow \mathcal{A}_g$ is a Noether-Lefschetz locus with general Neron-Severi rank 2. A natural extension of van der Geer's tautological ring is obtained by including more general Noether-Lefschetz loci. Results and conjectures related to cycle classes of Noether-Lefschetz loci for all $g$ are presented.

Abstract:In this paper we present a geometric way to extend the Shintani lift from even weight cusp forms for congruence subgroups to arbitrary modular forms, in particular Eisenstein series. This is part of our efforts to extend in the noncompact situation the results of Kudla-Millson and Funke-Millson relating Fourier coefficients of (Siegel) modular forms with intersection numbers of cycles (with coefficients) on orthogonal locally symmetric spaces. In the present paper, the cycles in question are the classical modular symbols with nontrivial coefficients. We introduce "capped" modular symbols with coefficients which we call "spectacle cycles" and show that the generating series of cohomological periods of any modular form over the spectacle cycles is a modular form of half-integral weight. In the last section of the paper we develop a new simplicial homology theory with local coefficients (that are not locally constant) that allows us to extend the above results to orbifold quotients of the upper half plane.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Oort conjecture concerning the non-existence of Shimura subvarieties contained generically in the Torelli locus in the Siegel modular variety A(g). Using the poly-stability of Higgs bundles on curves and the slope inequality of Xiao on fibered surfaces, we show that a Shimura curve C is not contained generically in the Torelli locus if its canonical Higgs bundle contains a unitary Higgs subbundle of rank at least (4g + 2)/5. From this we prove that a Shimura subvariety of SU(n, 1) type is not contained generically in the Torelli locus when a numerical inequality holds, which involves the genus g, the dimension n + 1, the degree 2d of CM field of the Hermitian space, and the type of the symplectic representation defining the Shimura subdatum. A similar result holds for Shimura subvarieties of SO(n, 2) type, defined by spin groups associated to quadratic spaces over a totally real number field of degree at least 6 subject to some natural constraints of signatures.

Abstract:Let $V$ be quadratic space of even dimension and of signature $(p, q)$ with $p \geq q > 0$. We show that the Kudla-Millson lift of toric cycles - attached to algebraic tori - is a cusp form that is the diagonal restriction of a Hilbert modular form of parallel weight one. We deduce a formula relating the dimension of the span of such diagonal restrictions and the dimension of the span of toric and special cycles.

Abstract:We study the modular symmetry of localized modes on fixed points of $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold. First, we find that the localized modes with even (odd) modular weight generally have $\Delta(6n^2)$ ($\Delta'(6n^2)$) modular flavor symmetry. Moreover, when we consider an additional Ansatz, the localized modes with even (odd) modular weight generally enjoy $S_3$ ($S'_4$) modular flavor symmetry, and we show the concrete wave functions of the localized modes.
