Abstract:In this paper we study the Oort conjecture concerning the non-existence of Shimura subvarieties contained generically in the Torelli locus in the Siegel modular variety A(g). Using the poly-stability of Higgs bundles on curves and the slope inequality of Xiao on fibered surfaces, we show that a Shimura curve C is not contained generically in the Torelli locus if its canonical Higgs bundle contains a unitary Higgs subbundle of rank at least (4g + 2)/5. From this we prove that a Shimura subvariety of SU(n, 1) type is not contained generically in the Torelli locus when a numerical inequality holds, which involves the genus g, the dimension n + 1, the degree 2d of CM field of the Hermitian space, and the type of the symplectic representation defining the Shimura subdatum. A similar result holds for Shimura subvarieties of SO(n, 2) type, defined by spin groups associated to quadratic spaces over a totally real number field of degree at least 6 subject to some natural constraints of signatures.

Abstract:We show that there does not exist any Shimura curve with strictly maximal Higgs field generically in the Torelli locus of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 4$. In particular, Shimura curves of Mumford type are not generically in the Torelli locus of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 4$.

Abstract:We prove that a Shimura curve in the Siegel modular variety is not generically contained in the open Torelli locus as long as the rank of unitary part in its canonical Higgs bundle satisfies a numerical upper bound. As an application we show that the Coleman–Oort conjecture holds for Shimura curves associated with partial corestriction upon a suitable choice of parameters, which generalizes a construction due to Mumford.
Torsion Vanishing for Some Shimura Varieties

Abstract:We generalize the torsion vanishing results of Caraiani-Scholze and Koshikawa. Our results apply to the cohomology of general Shimura varieties $(\mathbf{G},X)$ of PEL type $A$ or $C$, localized at a suitable maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ in the spherical Hecke algebra at primes $p$ such that $\mathbf{G}_{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}$ is a group for which we know the Fargues-Scholze local Langlands correspondence is the semi-simplification of a suitably nice local Langlands correspondence. This is accomplished by combining Koshikawa's technique, the theory of geometric Eisenstein series over the Fargues-Fontaine curve, the work of Santos describing the structure of the fibers of the minimally and toroidally compactified Hodge-Tate period morphism for general PEL type Shimura varieties of type $A$ or $C$, and ideas developed by Zhang on comparing Hecke correspondences on the moduli stack of $G$-bundles with the cohomology of Shimura varieties. In the process, we also establish a description of the generic part of the cohomology that bears resemblance to the work of Xiao-Zhu. Moreover, we also construct a filtration on the compactly supported cohomology that differs from Manotovan's filtration in the case that the Shimura variety is non-compact, allowing us to circumvent some of the circumlocutions taken by Cariani-Scholze. Our method showcases a very general strategy for proving such torsion vanishing results, and should bear even more fruit once the inputs are generalized. Motivated by this, we formulate an even more general torsion vanishing conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that certain points in the Hecke orbit of a CM point in the Siegel modular variety do not lie in the open Torelli locus under suitable conditions on the field of definition and the CM factors that arise in the corresponding CM abelian variety. The proof is a combination of properties of stable Faltings height and known cases of the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and is motivated by an analogue over function fields proved by Kukulies. We also discuss the relation of our result with questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and refine a previous result showing that certain Shimura subvarieties of unitary type in the Siegel modular variety only meet the open Torelli locus in dimension zero.

Abstract:Using the theory of Higgs bundles and their stabitlity properties associated to fibered surfaces and the Viehweg-Zuo characterization of Shimura curves in the moduli space of abelian varieties in terms of Higgs bundles, we prove that there does not exist any non-compact Shimura curves in the Prym locus of totally ramified $\Z_{2p}$- or $\Z_{2p}\times (\Z_{p})^{m-1}$-covers of the projective line in $A_{g}$ for $g\geq 8$, where $p\geq 5$ is a prime number.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field in which a prime number $p>2$ is inert. We continue the study of the (generalized) Goren--Oort strata on quaternionic Shimura varieties over finite extensions of $\mathbb F_p$. We prove that, when the dimension of the quaternionic Shimura variety is even, the Tate conjecture for the special fiber of the quaternionic Shimura variety holds for the cuspidal $\pi$-isotypical component, as long as the two unramified Satake parameters at $p$ are not differed by a root of unity.

Abstract: In this paper we study various aspects of the Ekedahl-Serre problem. We formulate questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and Coleman-Oort type for general weakly special subvarieties in the Siegel moduli space, propose a conjecture relating these two questions, and provide examples supporting these questions. The main new result is an upper bound of genera for curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isogeneous to products of elliptic curves satisfying the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and we also refine previous results showing that certain weakly special subvarieties only meet the open Torelli locus in at most finitely many points.
Topological Hyperbolicity of Moduli spaces of Elliptic Surfaces

Abstract:We introduce the notion of topological hyperbolicity to characterize the largeness of the topological fundamental group of a complex variety. Inspired by the Shafarevich conjecture, we propose to study the topological hyperbolicity of moduli spaces of polarized manifolds. We provide two pieces of supporting evidence: first, we show that moduli spaces where the infinitesimal Torelli theorem holds are very close to being topologically hyperbolic. Second, we establish a weak form of topological hyperbolicity for moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces of Kodaira dimension one without multiple fibers, where the infinitesimal Torelli theorem generally does not hold.

Abstract:Recent developments on the uniformity of the number of rational points on curves and subvarieties in a moving abelian variety rely on the geometric concept of the degeneracy locus. The first-named author investigated the degeneracy locus in certain mixed Shimura varieties. In this expository note we revisit some of these results while minimizing the use of mixed Shimura varieties while working in a family of principally polarized abelian varieties. We also explain their relevance for applications in diophantine geometry.

Abstract:We define the notion of special automorphisms on Shimura curves. Using this notion, for a wild class of elliptic curves defined over Q, we get rank one quadratic twists by discriminants having any prescribed number of prime factors. Finally, as an application, we obtain some new results on Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture for the rank one quadratic twists of the elliptic curve X 0(49).

Abstract:For quadratic curves over $F_p$, the number of solutions, which is governed by an analogue of the Mordell-Weil group, is expressed with the Legendre symbol of a coefficient of quadratic curves. Focusing on the number of solutions, a quadratic curve analogue of the modular form in the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture is proposed. This modular form yields the Gaussian sum and also possesses some modular transformation structure.

We define the Goren–Oort stratification of the characteristic-$p$fiber of a quaternionic Shimura variety of maximal level at$p$. We show that each stratum is a$(\mathbb{P}^{1})^{r}$-bundle over other quaternionic Shimura varieties (for an appropriate integer$r$). As an application, we give a necessary condition for the ampleness of a modular line bundle on a quaternionic Shimura variety in characteristic$p$.

Abstract:This paper concerns the characteristic-$p$ fibers of $\mathsf{GU}(q-2,2)$ Shimura varieties, which classify abelian varieties with additional structure. These Shimura varieties admit two stratifications of interest: the Ekedahl-Oort stratification, based on the isomorphism class of the $p$-torsion subgroup scheme, and the Newton stratification, based on the isogeny class of the $p$-divisible group. It is natural to ask which Ekedahl-Oort strata intersect the unique closed Newton stratum, called the supersingular locus. In this paper, we present several novel techniques that give information about the interaction between the two stratifications for general signature $(q-2,2)$, and as an application, we completely answer this question for the signature $(3,2)$.

Abstract:Abstract We formulate and prove a version of the arithmetic Siegel–Weil formula for (zero dimensional) Shimura varieties attached to tori, equipped with some additional data. More precisely, we define a family of “special” divisors in terms of Green functions at archimedean and non-archimedean places and prove that their degrees coincide with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series. The proof relies on the usual Siegel–Weil formula to provide a direct link between both sides of the identity, and in some sense, offers a more conceptual point of view on prior results in the literature.

Abstract:This paper is a complement of the modularity result of Bruinier, Howard, Kudla, Rapoport and Yang (BHKRY) for the special case $U(1,1)$ not considered there. The main idea to embed a $U(1, 1)$ Shimura curve to many $U(n-1, 1)$ Shimura varieties for big $n$, and prove a precise pullback formula of the generating series of arithmetic divisors. Afterwards, we use the modularity result of BHKRY together with existence of non-vanishing of classical theta series at any given point in the upper half plane to prove the modulartiy result on $U(1, 1)$ Shimura curves.

Abstract:We prove that Shimura varieties of abelian type satisfy a $p$-adic Borel-extension property over discretely valued fields. More precisely, let $\mathsf{D}$ denote the rigid-analytic closed unit disc and $\mathsf{D}^{\times} = \mathsf{D} \setminus \{0\}$, let $X$ be a smooth rigid-analytic variety, and let $S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}$ denote a Shimura variety of abelian type with torsion-free level structure. We prove every rigid-analytic map defined over a discretely valued $p$-adic field $\mathsf{D}^{\times} \times X \rightarrow S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}^{\textrm{an}}$ extends to an analytic map $\mathsf{D} \times X \rightarrow (S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}^{\textrm{BB}})^{\textrm{an}}$, where $S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}^{\textrm{BB}}$ is the Baily-Borel compactification of $S(G,\mathcal{H})_{\mathsf{K}}$. We also deduce various applications to algebraicity of analytic maps, degenerations of families of abeloids, and to $p$-adic notions of hyperbolicity. Along the way, we also prove an extension result for Rapoport-Zink spaces.
