Abstract:This paper concerns the characteristic-$p$ fibers of $\mathsf{GU}(q-2,2)$ Shimura varieties, which classify abelian varieties with additional structure. These Shimura varieties admit two stratifications of interest: the Ekedahl-Oort stratification, based on the isomorphism class of the $p$-torsion subgroup scheme, and the Newton stratification, based on the isogeny class of the $p$-divisible group. It is natural to ask which Ekedahl-Oort strata intersect the unique closed Newton stratum, called the supersingular locus. In this paper, we present several novel techniques that give information about the interaction between the two stratifications for general signature $(q-2,2)$, and as an application, we completely answer this question for the signature $(3,2)$.

Abstract:The supersingular locus of the $\mathrm{GU}(1,n-1)$ Shimura variety at a ramified prime $p$ is stratified by Coxeter varieties attached to finite symplectic groups. In this paper, we compute the $\ell$-adic cohomology of the Zariski closure of any such stratum. These are known as closed Bruhat-Tits strata. We prove that the cohomology groups of odd degree vanish, and those of even degree are explicitely determined as representations of the symplectic group with a Frobenius action. Each closed Bruhat-Tits stratum is linearly stratified by Coxeter varieties attached to smaller symplectic groups. Thanks to results of Lusztig who computed the cohomology of Coxeter varieties for classical groups, we make use of the spectral sequence associated to this stratification and describe explicitely all the terms at infinity. We point out that the closed Bruhat-Tits strata have isolated singularities when the dimension is greater than 1. Our analysis requires discussing the smoothness of the blow-up at the singular points, as well as comparing the ordinary $\ell$-adic cohomology with intersection cohomology. A by-product of our computations is that these two cohomologies actually coincide, so that surprisingly the presence of singularities does not interfere with the cohomology.

Abstract:Motivated by the problem of giving an explicit description of the basic locus in the reduction of Shimura varieties, Görtz, He and Nie studied the cases where the basic affine Deligne-Lusztig variety, which serves as its group-theoretic model, is a union of classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to Coxeter elements. In this paper, we study a natural generalization of this stratification in the case of $GL_n$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Oort conjecture concerning the non-existence of Shimura subvarieties contained generically in the Torelli locus in the Siegel modular variety A(g). Using the poly-stability of Higgs bundles on curves and the slope inequality of Xiao on fibered surfaces, we show that a Shimura curve C is not contained generically in the Torelli locus if its canonical Higgs bundle contains a unitary Higgs subbundle of rank at least (4g + 2)/5. From this we prove that a Shimura subvariety of SU(n, 1) type is not contained generically in the Torelli locus when a numerical inequality holds, which involves the genus g, the dimension n + 1, the degree 2d of CM field of the Hermitian space, and the type of the symplectic representation defining the Shimura subdatum. A similar result holds for Shimura subvarieties of SO(n, 2) type, defined by spin groups associated to quadratic spaces over a totally real number field of degree at least 6 subject to some natural constraints of signatures.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the $\mu$-ordinary locus of a Shimura variety with parahoric level structure. Under the axioms in \cite{HR}, we show that $\mu$-ordinary locus is a union of some maximal Ekedahl-Kottwitz-Oort-Rapoport strata introduced in \cite{HR} and we give criteria on the density of the $\mu$-ordinary locus.

Abstract:Igusa proved in 1958 that the polynomial determining the supersingularity of elliptic curve in Legendre form is separable. In this paper, we get an analogous result for curves of genus $2$ in Rosenhain form. More precisely we show that the ideal determining the superspeciality of the curve has multiplicity one at every superspecial point. Igusa used a Picard-Fucks differential operator annihilating a Gauß hypergeometric series. We shall use Lauricella system (of type D) of hypergeometric differential equations in three variables.

Abstract:Recent developments on the uniformity of the number of rational points on curves and subvarieties in a moving abelian variety rely on the geometric concept of the degeneracy locus. The first-named author investigated the degeneracy locus in certain mixed Shimura varieties. In this expository note we revisit some of these results while minimizing the use of mixed Shimura varieties while working in a family of principally polarized abelian varieties. We also explain their relevance for applications in diophantine geometry.

Abstract:This paper gives a criterion for a moduli point to be a point of non-transversal intersection of the hyperelliptic locus and the supersingular locus in the Siegel moduli stack $\mathfrak{A}_3 \times \mathbb{F}_p$. It is shown that for infinitely many primes $p$ there exists such a point.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a real quadratic field in which a fixed prime $p$ is inert, and $E_0$ be an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits; put $E=E_0 F$. Let ${\rm Sh}_{1,n-1}$ be the special fiber over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ of the Shimura variety for $G(U(1,n-1)\times U(n-1,1))$ with hyperspecial level structure at $p$ for some integer $n\geq 2$. Let ${\rm Sh}_{1,n-1}(K_{\mathfrak{p}}^{1})$ be the special fiber over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ of a Shimura variety for $G(U(1,n-1)\times U(n-1,1))$ with parahoric level structure at $p$ for some integer $n\geq 2$. We exhibit elements in the higher Chow group of the supersingular locus of ${\rm Sh}_{1,n-1}$ and study the stratification of ${\rm Sh}_{1,n-1}.$ Moreover, we study the geometry of ${\rm Sh}_{1,n-1}(K_{\mathfrak{p}}^{1})$ and prove a form of Ihara lemma. With Ihara lemma, we prove the the arithmetic level raising map is surjective for $n=2.$

Abstract:We prove that the generic part of the mod l cohomology of Shimura varieties associated to quasi-split unitary groups of even dimension is concentrated above the middle degree, extending our previous work to a non-compact case. The result applies even to Eisenstein cohomology classes coming from the locally symmetric space of the general linear group, and has been used in joint work with Allen, Calegari, Gee, Helm, Le Hung, Newton, Taylor and Thorne to get good control on these classes and deduce potential automorphy theorems without any self-duality hypothesis. Our main geometric result is a computation of the fibers of the Hodge-Tate period map on compactified Shimura varieties, in terms of similarly compactified Igusa varieties.

Singular loci of Schubert varieties and the Lookup Conjecture in type $\tilde A_{2}$

Abstract:We describe the loci of non-rationally smooth (nrs) points and of singular points for any non-spiral Schubert variety of $\tilde{A}_2$ in terms of the geometry of the (affine) Weyl group action on the plane $\mathbb{R}^2$. Together with the results of Graham and Li for spiral elements, this allows us to explicitly identify the maximal singular and nrs points in any Schubert variety of type $\tilde{A}_2$. Comparable results are not known for any other infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody flag variety (except for type $\tilde{A}_1$, where every Schubert variety is rationally smooth). As a consequence, we deduce that if $x$ is a point in a non-spiral Schubert variety $X_w$, then $x$ is nrs in $X_w$ if and only if there are more than $\dim X_w$ curves in $X_w$ through $x$ which are stable under the action of a maximal torus, as is true for Schubert varieties in (finite) type $A$. Combined with the work of Graham and Li for spiral Schubert varieties, this implies the Lookup Conjecture for $\tilde{A}_2$.

On the singular loci of higher secant varieties of Veronese embeddings

Abstract:In this paper we study singular loci of higher secant varieties of the image of the $d$-uple Veronese embedding of projective $n$-space, $v_d(\mathbb{P}^n) \subset \mathbb{P}^{N={n+d\choose d}-1}$. We call the closure of the union of all the $(k-1)$-planes spanned by $k$ points on $X$ the `$k$-th secant of $X$' for a given embedded variety $X \subset\mathbb{P}^N$ and denote it by $\sigma_k(X)$. For the singular loci of $\sigma_k(v_d(\mathbb{P}^n))$, it has been known only for $k\le3$. As investigating geometry of moving tangents along subvarieties, we determine the (non-)singularity of so-called the `$m$-subsecant locus' of $\sigma_k(v_d(\mathbb{P}^n))$, consisting of $\sigma_k(v_d(\mathbb{P}^m))$ with any $m$-plane $\mathbb{P}^m \subset \mathbb{P}^n$. These loci with arbitrary $k,d,m,n$ show an interesting trichotomy between generic smoothness, non-trivial singularity and trivial singularity. In many cases, they can be served as a new source for the singular locus of the $k$-th secant other than a trivial one, the $(k-1)$-th secant variety. We also consider the case of the $4$-th secant of $v_d(\mathbb{P}^n)$ by applying main results and computing conormal space via a certain type of Young flattening. In the end, some generalization and discussions for further development are presented as well.

Abstract:We study the standard family of supercurves of genus 1 with an underlying odd spin structures. We give a simple algebraic description of this family and of the compactified family of stable supercurves with one Neveu-Schwarz puncture. We also describe the Gauss-Manin connection on the first de Rham cohomology of this family and compute the superperiods of global differentials.

Abstract:We determine the irreducible components of Igusa varieties for Shimura varieties of Hodge type and use that to compute the irreducible components of central leaves. In particular, we show that a strong version of the discrete Hecke orbit conjecture is false in general. Our method combines recent work of D'Addezio on monodromy groups of compatible local systems with a generalisation of a method of Hida, using the Honda--Tate theory for Shimura varieties of Hodge type developed by Kisin--Madapusi Pera--Shin. We also determine the irreducible components of Newton strata in Shimura varieties of Hodge type by combining our methods with recent work of Zhou--Zhu.
