Abstract:This paper gives a criterion for a moduli point to be a point of non-transversal intersection of the hyperelliptic locus and the supersingular locus in the Siegel moduli stack $\mathfrak{A}_3 \times \mathbb{F}_p$. It is shown that for infinitely many primes $p$ there exists such a point.

Abstract:Let the bielliptic locus be the closure in the moduli space of stable curves of the locus of smooth curves that are double covers of genus 1 curves. In this paper we compute the class of the bielliptic locus in \bar{M}_3 in terms of a standard basis of the rational Chow group of codimension-2 classes in the moduli space. Our method is to test the class on the hyperelliptic locus: this gives the desired result up to two free parameters, which are then determined by intersecting the locus with two surfaces in \bar{M}_3.

Abstract:We study various naturally defined subvarieties of the moduli space ${\mathcal A}_g$ of complex principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav) in a neighborhood of the locus of products of $g$ elliptic curves. In this neighborhood, we obtain a local description for the locus of hyperelliptic curves, reproving the recent result of Shepherd-Barron that the hyperelliptic locus is locally given by tridiagonal matrices. We further reprove and generalize to arbitrary genus the recent result of Agostini and Chua showing that the locus of Jacobians of genus 5 curves with a theta-null is an irreducible component of the locus of ppav with a theta-null such that the singular locus of the theta divisor at the corresponding two-torsion point has tangent cone of rank at most 3. We further show that the locus of ppav such that the gradient vanishes, for some odd theta characteristic, locally has codimension $g$ near the diagonal. Finally, we obtain new results on the locus where the rank of the Hessian of the theta function at a two-torsion point that lies on the theta divisor is equal to 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we completely classify the canonical threefolds on the Noether line with geometric genus $p_g \ge 11$ by studying their moduli spaces. For every such moduli space, we establish an explicit stratification, estimate the number of its irreducible components and prove the dimension formula. A new and unexpected phenomenon is that the number of irreducible components grows linearly with the geometric genus, while the moduli space of canonical surfaces on the Noether line with any prescribed geometric genus has at most two irreducible components. The key idea in the proof is to relate the canonical threefolds on the Noether line to the simple fibrations in $(1, 2)$-surfaces by proving a conjecture stated by two of the authors in [CP].

Abstract:It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi–Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in ${\mathbb{P}^3}$ does not have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.

Abstract:We study genus 3 hyperelliptic curves which have an extra involution. The locus $Ł_3$ of these curves is a 3-dimensional subvariety in the genus 3 hyperelliptic moduli $\H_3$. We find a birational parametrization of this locus by affine 3-space. For every moduli point $\p \in \H_3$ such that $|\Aut (\p)|>2$, the field of moduli is a field of definition. We provide a rational model of the curve over its field of moduli for all moduli points $\p \in \H_3$ such that $|\Aut(\p)|>4$. This is the first time that such a rational model of these curves appears in the literature.

Abstract:A subvariety of a quasi-projective complex variety $X$ is called ``universally irreducible'' if its preimage inside the universal cover of $X$ is irreducible. In this paper we investigate sufficient conditions for universal irreducibility. We consider in detail complete intersection subvarieties of small codimension inside Siegel moduli spaces of any finite level. Moreover we show that, for $g\geq 3$, every Siegel modular form is the product of finitely many irreducible analytic functions on the Siegel upper half-space $\mathbb{H}_g$. We also discuss the special case of singular theta series of weight $\frac{1}{2}$ and of Schottky forms.

Abstract:We study generating series encoding linking numbers between geodesics in arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-folds. We show that the series converge to functions on the genus $2$ Siegel upper-half plane and that certain explicit modifications have the transformation properties of genus $2$ Siegel modular forms of weight $2$. This is done by carefully analysing the integral of the Kudla-Millson theta series over a surface with geodesic boundary.

Abstract:In the paper we consider the Jacobian locus $\overline{J_g}$ and the Prym locus $\overline{P_{g+1}}$, in the moduli space $A_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, for $g\geq 7$, and we study the extrinsic geometry of $\overline{J_g}\subset \overline{P_{g+1}}$, under the inclusion provided by the theory of generalized Prym varieties as introduced by Beauville. More precisely, we study certain geodesic curves with respect to the Siegel metric of $A_g$, starting at a Jacobian variety $[JC]\in A_g$ of a curve $[C]\in M_g$ and with direction $\zeta\in T_{[JC]}J_g$. We prove that for a general $JC$, any geodesic of this kind is not contained in $\overline{J_g}$ and even in $\overline{P_{g+1}}$, if $\zeta$ has rank $k<\Cliff C-3$, where $\Cliff C$ denotes the Clifford index of $C$.

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.

Abstract:We consider the loci of curves of genus 2 and 3 admitting a $d$-to-1 map to a genus 1 curve. After compactifying these loci via admissible covers, we obtain formulas for their Chow classes, recovering results of Faber-Pagani and van Zelm when $d=2$. The answers exhibit quasimodularity properties similar to those in the Gromov-Witten theory of a fixed genus 1 curve; we conjecture that the quasimodularity persists in higher genus, and indicate a number of possible variants.

Abstract:A curve over a perfect field $K$ of characteristic $p > 0$ is said to be superspecial if its Jacobian is isomorphic to a product of supersingular elliptic curves over the algebraic closure $\overline{K}$. In recent years, isomorphism classes of superspecial nonhyperelliptic curves of genus $4$ over finite fields in small characteristic have been enumerated. In particular, the non-existence of superspecial curves of genus $4$ in characteristic $p = 7$ was proved. In this note, we give an elementary proof of the existence of superspecial nonhyperelliptic curves of genus $4$ for infinitely many primes $p$. Specifically, we prove that the variety $C_p : x^3+y^3+w^3= 2 y w + z^2 = 0$ in the projective $3$-space with $p > 2$ is a superspecial curve of genus $4$ if and only if $p \equiv 2 \pmod{3}$. Our computational results show that $C_p$ with $p \equiv 2 \pmod 3$ are maximal curves over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ for all $3 \leq p \leq 269$.
