Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:We study the singularities of the moduli space of degree $e$ maps from smooth genus $g$ curves to an arbitrary smooth hypersurface of low degree. For $e$ large compared to $g$, we show that these moduli spaces have at worst terminal singularities. Our main approach is to study the jet schemes of these moduli spaces by developing a suitable form of the circle method.

Abstract:In this paper we study low-degree low-genus curves in a generic hypersurface X of degree (3, 3) in ℙ2 × ℙ2. We prove that the genus 0 and genus 1 curves of degree up to (2, 2) are smooth and rigid. We then use the multiple cover formula to compute the Gromov-Witten invariants of X of degree up to (2, 2) and genus up to 2. This provides some initial conditions to determine the full genus 1 and genus 2 Gromov-Witten invariants via Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa’s Feynman rule, which is expected to be proved in the near future.

Abstract:We investigate the moduli space ${\mathcal P}_g$ of smooth complex projective curves of genus $g$ equipped with a projective structure. When $g\, \geq\, 3$, it is shown that this moduli space ${\mathcal P}_g$ does not admit any nonconstant algebraic function. This is in contrast with the case of ${\mathcal P}_2$ which is known to be an affine variety.

Abstract:Suppose $Y$ is a smooth variety equipped with a top form. We prove a simple theorem giving a sharp lower bound on the geometric genus of a family of subvarieties of $Y$, in terms of the dimension of this family. Two elementary applications are presented. On the one hand, we show that for a very general curve $C$ and a very general hypersurface $Y\subset \mathbb P^{n+1}$ of degree $\ge 2n+1$, any map $C \to Y$ is constant. On the other hand, we give a lower bound on the genus of a family of curves with an isotrivial factor in the associated family of Jacobians; we also characterize the families of curves attaining this bound as the families of degree $2$ branched covers of a fixed curve.

On the duals of smooth projective complex hypersurfaces

Abstract:We show first that a generic hypersurface $V$ of degree $d\geq 3$ in the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^n$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ has at least one hyperplane section $V \cap H$ containing exactly $n$ ordinary double points, alias $A_1$ singularities, in general position, and no other singularities. Equivalently, the dual hypersurface $V^{\vee}$ has at least one normal crossing singularity of multiplicity $n$. Using this result, we show that the dual of any smooth hypersurface with $n,d \geq 3$ has at least a very singular point $q$, in particular a point $q$ of multiplicity $\geq n$.

Abstract:Browning and Vishe used the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to show the moduli space of rational curves on smooth hypersurfaces of low degree is irreducible and of the expected dimension. We reinterpret the circle method geometrically and prove a generalization for higher genus smooth projective curves. In particular, we explain how the geometry of numbers can be understood via the Beauville-Laszlo theorem in terms of vector bundles on curves and their slopes, allowing us to prove a higher genus variant of Davenport's shrinking lemma. As a corollary, we apply this result to show the Fujita invariant of any proper subvariety of a smooth hypersurface of low degree is less than 1.

The Degeneracy Loci for Smooth Moduli of Sheaves

Abstract:Let S be a smooth projective surface over $\mathbb{C}$. We prove that, under certain technical assumptions, the degeneracy locus of the universal sheaf over the moduli space of stable sheaves is either empty or an irreducible Cohen-Macaulay variety of the expected dimension. We also provide a criterion for when the degeneracy locus is non-empty. This result generalizes the work of Bayer, Chen, and Jiang for the Hilbert scheme of points on surfaces. The above result is a special case of a general phenomenon: for a perfect complex of Tor-amplitude [0,1], the geometry of the degeneracy locus is closely related to the geometry of the derived Grassmannian. We analyze their birational geometry and relate it to the incidence varieties of derived Grassmannians. As a corollary, we prove a statement previously claimed by the author in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2408.06860" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2408.06860">arXiv:2408.06860</a>.

Abstract:Let dimensions $d \ge 3$ and codimensions $c \ge 3$ be positive integers, and define the exceptional set $E = \{3, 4\}$. We prove that, for $d \notin E$ with arbitrary $c$, or for $d \in E$ with $c \le d$, for any $d$-dimensional integral homology class $[\Sigma]$ on a compact (not necessarily orientable) $(d+c)$-dimensional smooth manifold $M$, there exist open sets $\Omega_{[\Sigma]}$ in the space of smooth Riemannian metrics such that all area-minimizing integral currents in $[\Sigma]$ are singular for metrics in $\Omega_{[\Sigma]}$. This resolves a conjecture by White regarding the generic regularity of area-minimizing surfaces and provides a sharp dimension-wise answer. As a corollary, we determine the moduli space of area-minimizing currents in the vicinity of any area-minimizing transverse immersion with dimension $d \ge 3$ and codimension $c \ge 3$ that satisfies an angle condition of asymptotically sharp order in $d$. Analogous conclusions apply to mod $2$ area-minimizing surfaces.

Abstract:Fix integers $r\geq 4$ and $i\geq 2$. Let $C$ be a non-degenerate, reduced and irreducible complex projective curve in $\mathbb P^r$, of degree $d$, not contained in a hypersurface of degree $\leq i$. Let $p_a(C)$ be the arithmetic genus of $C$. Continuing previous research, under the assumption $d\gg \max\{r,i\}$, in the present paper we exhibit a Castelnuovo bound $G_0(r;d,i)$ for $p_a(C)$. In general, we do not know whether this bound is sharp. However, we are able to prove it is sharp when $i=2$, $r=6$ and $d\equiv 0,3,6$ (mod $9$). Moreover, when $i=2$, $r\geq 9$, $r$ is divisible by $3$, and $d\equiv 0$ (mod $r(r+3)/6$), we prove that if $G_0(r;d,i)$ is not sharp, then for the maximal value of $p_a(C)$ there are only three possibilities. The case in which $i=2$ and $r$ is not divisible by $3$ has already been examined in the literature. We give some information on the extremal curves.

Abstract:It is a classical fact going back to F. Klein that an elliptic curve $E$ over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is defined by a homogeneous polynomial in $3$ variables with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(j_{E})$, where $j_{E}$ is the $j$-invariant of $E$, and $\mathbb{Q}(j_{E})$ is the field of moduli of $E$. The general definition of field of moduli goes back to T. Matsusaka and G. Shimura. With few exceptions, it coincides with the intersection of the fields where the curve is defined. We prove that every smooth plane curve of degree prime with $6$ is defined by a homogeneous polynomial with coefficients in the field of moduli. Furthermore, we show that most plane curves in arbitrary degree, and more generally most algebraic cycles in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ with finite automorphism group, descend to a Brauer-Severi surface over the field of moduli.

Abstract:(abbreviated) We use a semi-numerical approach to study the secular behavior of a system composed of a central star and two massive planets in eccentric co-planar orbits. We show that the secular dynamics of this system can be described using only two parameters, the ratios of the semimajor axes and the planetary masses. The main dynamical features of the system are presented in geometrical pictures that allows us to investigate a large domain of the secular phase space of this three-body problem without time-expensive numerical integrations of the equations of motion, and without any restriction on the magnitude of the planetary eccentricities. We show that three different regimes of secular motion with respect to the secular angle $\Delta\varpi$ are possible: they are circulation, oscillation (around 0 and $180^\circ$), and high eccentricity libration in a nonlinear secular resonance. The first two regimes are a continuous extension of the classical linear secular perturbation theory; the last is a new feature, hitherto unknown, in the secular dynamics of the three-body problem.

Abstract:In this paper we study asymptotic directions in the tangent bundle of the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_g$ of curves of genus $g$, namely those tangent directions that are annihilated by the second fundamental form of the Torelli map. We give examples of asymptotic directions for any $g \geq 4$. We prove that if the rank $d$ of a tangent direction $\zeta \in H^1(T_C)$ (with respect to the infinitesimal deformation map) is less than the Clifford index of the curve $C$, then $\zeta$ is not asymptotic. If the rank of $\zeta$ is equal to the Clifford index of the curve, we give sufficient conditions ensuring that the infinitesimal deformation $\zeta$ is not asymptotic. Then we determine all asymptotic directions of rank 1 and we give an almost complete description of asymptotic directions of rank 2.

Abstract:Sbrana and Cartan gave local classifications for the set of Euclidean hypersurfaces $M^n\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which admit another genuine isometric immersions in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $n\geq 3$. The main goal of this paper is to extend their classification to higher codimensions. Our main result is a complete description of the moduli space of genuine deformations of generic hypersurfaces of rank $(p+1)$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+p}$ for $p\leq n-2$. As a consequence, we obtain an analogous classification to the ones given by Sbrana and Cartan providing all local isometric immersions in $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ of a generic hypersurface $M^n\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $n\geq 4$. We also show how the techniques developed here can be used to study conformally flat Euclidean submanifolds.

Abstract:We prove the genus zero part of the generalized Witten conjecture relating moduli spaces of spin curves to Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies. That is, we show that intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable r-spin curves assemble into a generating function which yields a solution of the semiclassical limit of the KdV_r equations. We formulate axioms for a cohomology class on this moduli space which allow one to construct a cohomological field theory of rank $r-1$ in all genera. In genus zero it produces a Frobenius manifold which is isomorphic to the Frobenius manifold structure on the base of the versal deformation of the A_{r-1} singularity. We prove analogs of the puncture, dilaton, and topological recursion relations by drawing an analogy with the construction of Gromov-Witten invariants and quantum cohomology.
