Abstract:We give a partial answer to a conjecture of A. Balog, concerning the size of AA+A, where A is a finite subset of real numbers. Also, we prove several new results on the cardinality of A:A+A, AA+AA and A:A + A:A.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:In 1970,R.L.Graham asked if the following is true: Let A be a finite sequence of n different positive integers a_i,1≤i≤n.Then(max)i,ja_i(a_i,a_j)≥n.Many number theorists have studied the problem.In 1996,this old conjecture though long and complicated,was proved correct in an outstandingly original by Balasubramanian and Soundararajan.Recently,Granville and Roesler conjectured that the largest element of the set agcd(a,b),bgcd(a,b),a∈A,b∈B is≥min(|A|,(|B|)),which generalizes Graham's conjecture.In this paper the conjecture is verified when both A and B have a prime.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Abstract:The following is a 2008 conjecture of Abraham, Bonnet and Kubiś: [ABK Conjecture] Every well quasi order (wqo) is a countable union of better quasi orders (bqo). We obtain a partial progress on the conjecture, by showing that the class of orders that are a countable union of better quasi orders (sigma-bqo) is closed under various operations. These include diverse products, such as the Dress-Shieffels product. We develop various properties of the latter product. In relation with the main question, we explore the class of alpha-wqo for countable ordinals alpha and obtain several closure properties and a Hausdorff-style classification theorem. Our main contribution is the discovery of various properties of sigma-bqos and ruling out potential counterexamples to the ABK Conjecture.

Abstract:We address several questions of Donald Monk related to irredundance and spread of Boolean algebras, gaining both some ZFC knowledge and consistency results. We show in ZFC that irr(B_0 times B_1)= max(irr(B_0),irr(B_1)). We prove consistency of the statement ``there is a Boolean algebra B such that irr(B)<s(B otimes B)'' and we force a superatomic Boolean algebra B_* such that s(B_*)=inc(B_*)=kappa, irr(B_*)=Id(B_*)=kappa^+ and Sub(B_*)=2^(kappa^+). Next we force a superatomic algebra B_0 such that irr(B_0)<inc(B_0) and a superatomic algebra B_1 such that t(B_1)>Aut(B_1). Finally we show that consistently there is a Boolean algebra B of size lambda such that there is no free sequence in B of length lambda, there is an ultrafilter of tightness lambda (so t(B)=lambda) and lambda notin Depth_(Hs)(B).

Abstract:In this note, we prove a certain hypergraph generalization of the Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers Theorem. Our result shares some features in common with a similar such generalizsation due to Sudakov, Szemeredi and Vu, though the conclusion of our result is somewhat different.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A1,…,An(n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b1,…,bn be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m⩽(k−1)/(n−1) there are more than (k−1)n−(m+1)(n2) sets {a1,…,an} such that a1∈A1,…,an∈An, and both ai≠aj and mai+bi≠maj+bj (or both mai≠maj and ai+bi≠aj+bj) for all 1⩽i<j⩽n. This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.

Abstract:Using algebraic transformations and equivalent reformulations we derive a number of new results from some earlier ones (by the author) in more accepted terms closely related to well-known conjectures of Bondy and Jung including a number of classical results in hamiltonian graph theory (due to Dirac, Ore, Nash-Williams, Bondy, Jung and so on) as special cases. A number of extended and strengthened versions of these conjectures are proposed.

Abstract:Around 20 years ago, M. Van den Bergh introduced double Poisson brackets as operations on associative algebras inducing Poisson brackets under the representation functor. Weaker versions of these operations, called modified double Poisson brackets, were later introduced by S. Arthamonov in order to induce a Poisson bracket on moduli spaces of representations of the corresponding associative algebras. Moreover, he defined two operations that he conjectured to be modified double Poisson brackets. The first case of this conjecture was recently proved by M. Goncharov and V. Gubarev motivated by the theory of Rota-Baxter operators of nonzero weight. We settle the conjecture by realising the second case as part of a new family of modified double Poisson brackets. These are obtained from mixed double Poisson algebras, a new class of algebraic structures that are introduced and studied in the present work.

Effective results on the size and structure of sumsets

Abstract:Let $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ be a finite set. It is known that $NA$ has a particular size ($\vert NA\vert = P_A(N)$ for some $P_A(X) \in \mathbb{Q}[X]$) and structure (all of the lattice points in a cone other than certain exceptional sets), once $N$ is larger than some threshold. In this article we give the first effective upper bounds for this threshold for arbitrary $A$. Such explicit results were only previously known in the special cases when $d=1$, when the convex hull of $A$ is a simplex or when $\vert A\vert = d+2$, results which we improve.

Channeling as a method of making nanosized beams of particles

Abstract:Particle channeling in a bent crystal lattice has led to an efficient instrument for beam steering at accelerators, demonstrated from MeV to TeV energies. In particular, crystal focusing of high energy protons to micron size has been demonstrated at IHEP with the results well in match with Lindhard (critical angle) prediction. Channeling in crystal microstructures has been proposed as a unique source of a microbeam of high-energy particles. Channeling in nanostructures (single-wall and multi-wall nanotubes) offers the opportunities to produce ion beams on nanoscale. Particles channeled in a nanotube (with typical diameter of about 1 nanometer) are trapped in two dimensions and can be steered (deflected, focused) with the efficiency similar to that of crystal channeling or better. This technique has been a subject of computer simulations, with experimental efforts under way in several high energy labs, including IHEP. We present the theoretical outlook for making channeling-based nanoscale ion beams and report the experience with crystal-focused microscale proton beams.

Part A consists of 100 unsolved conjectures of the author while conjectures in Part B have been recently confirmed. We hope that this material will interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Number theorists are welcome to work on those open conjectures.

Abstract:We solve some problems about relative lengths of Maltsev conditions, in particular, we provide an affirmative answer to a classical problem raised by A. Day more than 50 years ago. In detail, both congruence distributive and congruence modular varieties admit Maltsev characterizations by means of the existence of a finite but variable number of appropriate terms. A. Day showed that from Jónsson terms witnessing congruence distributivity it is possible to construct terms witnessing congruence modularity. We show that Day's result about the number of such terms is sharp when n is even. We also deal with other kinds of terms, such as alvin, Gumm, directed, as well as with possible variations we will call "specular" and "defective". All the results hold when restricted to locally finite varieties.

Abstract:We show that, consistently, every MAD family has cardinality strictly bigger than the dominating number, that is a > d, thus solving one of the oldest problems on cardinal invariants of the continuum. The method is a contribution to the theory of iterated forcing for making the continuum large.

Abstract:We investigate subsets with small sumset in arbitrary abelian groups. For an abelian group $G$ and an $n$-element subset $Y \subseteq G$ we show that if $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, then the number of subsets $A \subseteq Y$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$ is at most \[2^{o(s)}\binom{\frac{m+\beta}{2}}{s},\] where $\beta$ is the size of the largest subgroup of $G$ of size at most $\left(1+o(1)\right)m$. This bound is sharp for $\mathbb{Z}$ and many other groups. Our result improves the one of Campos and nearly bridges the remaining gap in a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris, and Samotij. We also explore the behaviour of uniformly chosen random sets $A \subseteq \{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$. Under the same assumption that $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, we show that with high probability there exists an arithmetic progression $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ of size at most $m/2 + o(m)$ containing all but $o(s)$ elements of $A$. Analogous results are obtained for asymmetric sumsets, improving results by Campos, Coulson, Serra, and Wötzel. The main tool behind our proofs is a graph container theorem combined with a variant of an asymmetric hypergraph container theorem.

A note on surjective cardinals

Abstract:For cardinals $\mathfrak{a}$ and $\mathfrak{b}$, we write $\mathfrak{a}=^\ast\mathfrak{b}$ if there are sets $A$ and $B$ of cardinalities $\mathfrak{a}$ and $\mathfrak{b}$, respectively, such that there are partial surjections from $A$ onto $B$ and from $B$ onto $A$. $=^\ast$-equivalence classes are called surjective cardinals. In this article, we show that $\mathsf{ZF}+\mathsf{DC}_\kappa$, where $\kappa$ is a fixed aleph, cannot prove that surjective cardinals form a cardinal algebra, which gives a negative solution to a question proposed by Truss [J. Truss, Ann. Pure Appl. Logic 27, 165--207 (1984)]. Nevertheless, we show that surjective cardinals form a ``surjective cardinal algebra'', whose postulates are almost the same as those of a cardinal algebra, except that the refinement postulate is replaced by the finite refinement postulate. This yields a smoother proof of the cancellation law for surjective cardinals, which states that $m\cdot\mathfrak{a}=^\ast m\cdot\mathfrak{b}$ implies $\mathfrak{a}=^\ast\mathfrak{b}$ for all cardinals $\mathfrak{a},\mathfrak{b}$ and all nonzero natural numbers $m$.

Abstract:We obtain box-counting estimates for the pinned distance sets of (dense subsets of) planar discrete Ahlfors-regular sets of exponent $s>1$. As a corollary, we improve upon a recent result of Orponen, by showing that if $A$ is Ahlfors-regular of dimension $s>1$, then almost all pinned distance sets of $A$ have lower box-counting dimension $1$. We also show that if $A,B\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ have Hausdorff dimension $>1$ and $A$ is Ahlfors-regular, then the set of distances between $A$ and $B$ has modified lower box-counting dimension $1$, which taking $B=A$ improves Orponen's result in a different direction, by lowering packing dimension to modified lower box-counting dimension. The proofs involve ergodic-theoretic ideas, relying on the theory of CP-processes and projections.
