Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that a component of the filled-in Julia set of any polynomial is a point if and only if its forward orbit contains no periodic critical components. It follows immediately that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each critical component of the filled-in Julia set is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:We outline a proof of a remarkable conjecture of Labastida-Mari{\~n}o-Ooguri-Vafa about certain new algebraic structures of quantum link invariants and the integrality of infinite family of new topological invariants. Our method is based on the cut-and-join analysis and a special rational ring characterizing the structure of the Chern-Simons partition function.

Abstract:We prove two new cases of the Broué-Malle-Rouquier freeness conjecture for the Hecke algebras associated to complex reflection groups. These two cases are the complex reflection groups of rank 2 called $G_{20}$ and $G_{21}$ in the Shephard and Todd classification. This reduces the number of remaining unproven cases to 3.

One of the proofs utilizes Helly's theorem to provide a concise and elegant proof of the inequality in Godbersen's conjecture. The other proof utilizes the Brunn-Minkowski inequality to provide a completely new proof of the inclusion $-K\subset nK$ for convex bodies $K$ with centroid at the origin, thereby proving Godbersen's conjecture.

Abstract: In 1933, Borsuk proposed the following problem: Can every bounded set in $\mathbb{E}^n$ be divided into $n+1$ subsets of smaller diameters? This problem has been studied by many authors, and a lot of partial results have been discovered. In particular, Kahn and Kalai's counterexamples surprised the mathematical community in 1993. Nevertheless, the problem is still far away from being completely resolved. This paper presents a broad review on related subjects and, based on a novel reformulation, introduces a computer proof program to deal with this well-known problem.

Abstract:Recently, Chan and Wang proved numerous congruences satisfied by $$p_{a/b}(n)$$, where $$p_{a/b}(n)$$ denotes the coefficient of $$q^n$$ in the series expansion of $$(q;q)_\infty ^{\frac{a}{b}}$$. Moreover, they presented many conjectures on the congruences for $$p_{a/b}(n)$$. In this paper, we not only prove some conjectures of Chan and Wang, but also discover new congruences for $$p_{a/b}(n)$$ in light of Ramanujan’s modular equations of fifth, seventh and thirteenth orders.

Abstract:We adapt Wei Zhang's proof of Kolyvagin's conjecture for modular abelian varieties over $\mathbb{Q}$ to rely on the BDP main conjecture instead of on the cyclotomic main conjecture. The main ingredient is a reduction to a case that is tractable by the BDP main conjecture, in a similar spirit to Zhang's reduction to the rank one case. By using the BDP main conjecture instead of the cyclotomic main conjecture, our approach is more suitable than Zhang's to extend to modular abelian varieties over totally real fields.

Abstract:We present a generalization of Brouwer's conjectural family of inequalities -- a popular family of inequalities in spectral graph theory bounding the partial sum of the Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs -- for the case of abstract simplicial complexes of any dimension. We prove that this family of inequalities holds for shifted simplicial complexes, which generalize threshold graphs, and give tighter bounds (linear in the dimension of the complexes) for simplicial trees. We prove that the conjecture holds for the the first, second, and last partial sums for all simplicial complexes, generalizing many known proofs for graphs to the case of simplicial complexes. We also show that the conjecture holds for the tth partial sum for all simplicial complexes with dimension at least t and matching number greater than $t$. Returning to the special case of graphs, we expand on a known proof to show that the Brouwer's conjecture holds with equality for the tth partial sum where t is the maximum clique size of the graph minus one (or, equivalently, the number of cone vertices). Along the way, we develop machinery that may give further insights into related long-standing conjectures.

Abstract:We give an elementary proof of Brouwer's fixed-point theorem. The only mathematical prerequisite is a version of the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem: a sequence in a compact subset of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space has a convergent subsequence with a limit in that set. Our main tool is a `no-bullying' lemma for agents with preferences over indivisible goods. What does this lemma claim? Consider a finite number of children, each with a single indivisible good (a toy) and preferences over those toys. Let's say that a group of children, possibly after exchanging toys, could bully some poor kid if all group members find their own current toy better than the toy of this victim. The no-bullying lemma asserts that some group $S$ of children can redistribute their toys among themselves in such a way that all members of $S$ get their favorite toy from $S$, but they cannot bully anyone.
