Abstract:Brouwer's fan theorem states that every bar is a uniform bar. We give an overview of the status of this axiom in Bishop's constructive mathematics. In particular, we describe the relationship between the fan theorem, the weak König lemma, and the uniform continuity theorem.

Abstract:The paper is a contribution to intuitionistic reverse mathematics. We introduce a formal system called Basic Intuitionistic Mathematics BIM, and then search for statements that are, over BIM, equivalent to Brouwer's Fan Theorem or to its positive denial, Kleene's Alternative to the Fan Theorem. The Fan Theorem is true under the intended intuitionistic interpretation and Kleene's Alternative is true in the model of BIM consisting of the Turing-computable functions. The task of finding equivalents of Kleene's Alternative is, intuitionistically, a nontrivial extension of finding equivalents of the Fan Theorem, although there is a certain symmetry in the arguments that we shall try to make transparent. We introduce closed-and-separable subsets of Baire space and of the set of the real numbers. Such sets may be compact and also positively noncompact. The Fan Theorem is the statement that Cantor space, or, equivalently, the unit interval, is compact, and Kleene's Alternative is the statement that Cantor space, or, equivalently, the unit interval is positively noncompact. The class of the compact closed-and-separable sets and also the class of the closed-and-separable sets that are positively noncompact are characterized in many different ways and a host of equivalents of both the Fan Theorem and Kleene's Alternative is found.

Abstract:In the context of a weak formal theory called Basic Intuitionistic Mathematics , we study Brouwer's Fan Theorem and a strong negation of the Fan Theorem, Kleene's Alternative (to the Fan Theorem) . We prove that the Fan Theorem is equivalent to contrapositions of a number of intuitionistically accepted axioms of countable choice and that Kleene's Alternative is equivalent to strong negations of these statements. We discuss finite and infinite games and introduce a constructively useful notion of determinacy . We prove that the Fan Theorem is equivalent to the Intuitionistic Determinacy Theorem . This theorem says that every subset of Cantor space is, in our constructively meaningful sense, determinate. Kleene's Alternative is equivalent to a strong negation of a special case of this theorem. We also consider a uniform intermediate value theorem and a compactness theorem for classical propositional logic . The Fan Theorem is equivalent to each of these theorems and Kleene's Alternative is equivalent to strong negations of them. We end with a note on 'stronger' Fan Theorems. The paper is a sequel to Veldman (Arch Math Logic 53:621–693, 2014).

Abstract:The paper is a contribution to intuitionistic reverse mathematics. We work in a weak formal system for intuitionistic analysis. The Principle of Open Induction on Cantor space is the statement that every open subset of Cantor space that is progressive with respect to the lexicographical ordering of Cantor space coincides with Cantor space. The Approximate-Fan Theorem is an extension of the Fan Theorem that follows from Brouwer's principle of induction on bars in Baire space and implies the Principle of Open Induction on Cantor space. The Principle of Open Induction in Cantor space implies the Fan Theorem, but, conversely the Fan Theorem does not prove the Principle of Open Induction on Cantor space. We list a number of equivalents of the Principle of Open Induction on Cantor space and also a number of equivalents of the Approximate-Fan Theorem.

Abstract:Extending Martín Escardó's effectful forcing technique, we give a new proof of a well-known result: Brouwer's monotone bar theorem holds for any bar that can be realized by a functional of type $(\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}) \to \mathbb{N}$ in Gödel's System T. Effectful forcing is an elementary alternative to standard sheaf-theoretic forcing arguments, using ideas from programming languages, including computational effects, monads, the algebra interpretation of call-by-name ${\lambda}$-calculus, and logical relations. Our argument proceeds by interpreting System T programs as well-founded dialogue trees whose nodes branch on a query to an oracle of type $\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$, lifted to higher type along a call-by-name translation. To connect this interpretation to the bar theorem, we then show that Brouwer's famous "mental constructions" of barhood constitute an invariant form of these dialogue trees in which queries to the oracle are made maximally and in order.

Fan's lemma via bistellar moves

Abstract:Pachner proved that all closed combinatorially equivalent combinatorial manifolds can be transformed into each other by a finite sequence of bistellar moves. We prove an analogue of Pachner's theorem for combinatorial manifolds with a free Z2-action, and use it to give a combinatorial proof of Fan's lemma about labellings of centrally symmetric triangulations of spheres. Similarly to other combinatorial proofs, we must assume an additional property of the triangulation for the proof to work. However, unlike the other combinatorial proofs, no such assumption is needed for dimensions at most 3.

Uniform Borel amenability is equivalent to randomized hyperfiniteness

Abstract:Whether Borel amenability implies hyperfiniteness is a main open question in the theory of Borel equivalence relations. Under a mild extra uniformity condition, we prove that Borel amenability of bounded degree Borel graphs is equivalent to a randomized version of hyperfiniteness. Our new approach yields simple proofs and generalizations for the Ornstein-Weiss theorem, the Quasi-Tiling theorem and the Connes-Feldman-Weiss theorem. One result is that the main conjecture holds up to a compressible set (that is, a set that admits no invariant probability measure).

Abstract:We show that if $G$ is amenable and $A\subseteq G$ has positive upper Banach density, then there is an identity neighborhood $B$ in the Bohr topology on $G$ that is almost contained in $AA^{-1}$ in the sense that $B\backslash AA^{-1}$ has upper Banach density $0$. This generalizes the abelian case (due to Følner) and the countable case (due to Beiglböck, Bergelson, and Fish). The proof is indirectly based on local stable group theory in continuous logic. The main ingredients are Grothendieck's double-limit characterization of relatively weakly compact sets in spaces of continuous functions, along with results of Ellis and Nerurkar on the topological dynamics of weakly almost periodic flows.

Bishop-like theorems for non-subnormal operators

Abstract:The celebrated Bishop theorem states that an operator is subnormal if and only if it is the strong limit of a net (or a sequence) of normal operators. By the Agler-Stankus theorem, $2$-isometries behave similarly to subnormal operator in the sense that the role of subnormal operators is played by $2$-isometries, while the role of normal operators is played by Brownian unitaries. In this paper we give Bishop-like theorems for $2$-isometries. Two methods are involved, the first of which goes back to Bishop's original idea and the second refers to Conway and Hadwin's result of general nature. We also investigate the strong and $*$-strong closedness of the class of Brownian unitaries.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to prove a Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás type theorem on the unital uniform algebra A_{w^*u}(B_{X^*}) consisting of all w^*-uniformly continuous functions on the closed unit ball B_{X^*} which are holomorphic on the interior of B_{X^*}. We show that this result holds for A_{w^*u}(B_{X^*}) if X^* is uniformly convex or X^* is the uniformly complex convex dual space of an order continuous absolute normed space. The vector-valued case is also studied.

Abstract:The Machado--Bishop theorem for weighted vector-valued functions vanishing at infinity has been extensively studied. In this paper, we give an analogue of Machado's distance formula for bounded weighted vector-valued functions. A number of applications are given; in particular, some types of the Bishop--Stone--Weierstrass theorem for bounded vector-valued continuous spaces in the uniform topology are discussed; the splitting of $C(I \times J, X \otimes Y)$ as the closure of $C(I, X) \otimes C(J, Y)$ in different senses and the extension of continuous vector-valued functions are studied.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of Lorentzian fans, which form a special class of tropical fans that are particularly well-suited for proving Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities. To demonstrate the utility of Lorentzian fans, we prove a practical characterization of them in terms of their two-dimensional star fans. We also show that Lorentzian fans are closed under many common tropical fan operations, and we discuss how the Lorentzian property descends to the underlying tropical variety, allowing us to deduce Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities in the general setting of tropical intersection theory on tropical fan varieties.

An embedding of the Cantor fan into the Lelek fan

Abstract:The Lelek fan $L$ is usually constructed as a subcontinuum of the Cantor fan in such a way that the set of the end-points of $L$ is dense in $L$. It easily follows that the Lelek fan is embeddable into the Cantor fan. {It is also a well-known fact that the Cantor fan is embeddable into the Lelek fan, but this is less obvious. When proving this, one usually uses the well-known result by Dijkstra and van Mill that the Cantor set is embeddable into the complete Erdös space, and the well-known fact by Kawamura, Oversteegen, and Tymchatyn that the set of end-points of the Lelek fan is homeomorphic to the complete Erdös space. Then, the subcontinuum of the Lelek fan that is induced by the embedded Cantor set into the set of end-points of the Lelek fan, is a Cantor fan. In our paper, we give an alternative straightforward construction of a Cantor fan into the Lelek fan. We do not use the fact that the Cantor set is embeddable into the complete Erdös space and that it is homeomorphic to the set of end-points of the Lelek fan. Instead, we use our recent techniques of Mahavier products of closed relations to produce an embedding of the Cantor fan into the Lelek fan. Since the Cantor fan is universal for the family of all smooth fans, it follows that also the Lelek fan is universal for smooth fans.

Abstract:Equipartition theory, beginning with the classical ham sandwich theorem, seeks the fair division of finite point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by the full-dimensional regions determined by a prescribed geometric dissection of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Here we examine $\textit{equidistributions}$ of finite point sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by prescribed $\textit{low dimensional}$ subsets. Our main result states that if $r\geq 3$ is a prime power, then for any $m$-coloring of a sufficiently small point set $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, there exists an $r$-fan in $\mathbb{R}^d$ -- that is, the union of $r$ ``half-flats'' of codimension $r-2$ centered about a common $(r-1)$-codimensional affine subspace -- which captures all the points of $X$ in such a way that each half-flat contains at most an $r$-th of the points from each color class. The number of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ we require for this is essentially tight when $m\geq 2$. Additionally, we extend our equidistribution results to ''piercing'' distributions in a similar fashion to Dolnikov's hyperplane transversal generalization of the ham sandwich theorem. By analogy with recent work of Frick et al., our results are obtained by applying Gale duality to linear cases of topological Tverberg-type theorems. Finally, we extend our distribution results to multiple $r$-fans after establishing a multiple intersection version of a topological Tverberg-type theorem due to Sarkaria.

Abstract:A new class of full fans in an euclidean space - tight fans - is introduced. Such fans are defined using a property of local symmetry in a face of a tiling. Tight fans are related to the theory of parallelotopes in an euclidean space. A theorem is proved that a fan of cells meeting in a given face of a tiling by parallelotopes is a tight fan. A new proof was given for a theorem by Delone on 5 combinatorial types of parallelotopes meeting in a common face of codimension 3. Canonical scalings of an euclidean space tiling are special functions defined on hyperfaces of the tiling. Existance of such functions for a given tiling is known to be related to existance of a generatix of a tiling. Generatix is a polyhedral surface with an orthogonal projection coinciding with a given tiling. A theroem is proved that a fan has a canonical scaling iff it is polytopical.

Abstract:The classical Brouwer fixed point theorem states that in R-d every continuous function from a convex, compact set on itself has a fixed point. For an arbitrary probability space, let L-0 = L-0(Omega, A, P) be the set of random variables. Abstract:Many continua that admit a transitive homeomorphism may be found in the literature. The circle is probably the simplest non-degenerate continuum that admits such a homeomorphism. On the other hand, most of the known examples of such continua have a complicated topological structure. For example, they are {indecomposable} (such as the pseudo-arc or the Knaster bucket-handle continuum), or they are {not indecomposable} but have some other complicated topological structure, such as a dense set of ramification points (such as the Sierpi\' nski carpet) or a dense set of end-points (such as the Lelek fan). In this paper, we continue our mission of finding continua with simpler topological structures that admit a transitive homeomorphism.} We construct a transitive homeomorphism on the Cantor fan. {In our approach, we use four different techniques, each of them giving a unique construction of a transitive homeomorphism on the Cantor fan:} two techniques using quotient spaces of products of compact metric spaces and Cantor sets, and two using Mahavier products of closed relations on compact metric spaces. {We also demonstrate how our technique using Mahavier products of closed relations may be used to } construct a transitive function $f$ on a Cantor fan $X$ such that $\varprojlim(X,f)$ is a Lelek fan.
