Abstract:Let (X, tau(1)) and (Y, tau(2)) be two Hausdorff locally convex spaces with continuous duals X, and Y', respectively, L (X, Y) be the space of all continuous linear operators from X into Y, K (X, Y) be the space of all compact operators of L (X, Y). Let WOT and UOT be the weak operator topology and uniform operator topology on K (X, Y), respectively. In this paper, we characterize a full-invariant property of K (X, Y); that is, if the sequence space X has the signed-weak gliding hump property, then each; lambda-multiplier WOT-convergent series Sigma(i) T-i in K(X, Y) must be X-multiplier convergent with respect to all topologies between WOT and UOT if and only if each continuous linear operator T: (X, tau(1)) --> or (lambda(beta), sigma(lambda(beta),lambda)) is compact. Uniform convergence for convexification of dominated pointwise convergent continuous functions

Abstract:The Lebesgue dominated convergence theorem of the measure theory implies that the Riemann integral of a bounded sequence of continuous functions over the interval [ 0,1] pointwise converging to zero, also converges to zero. The validity of this result is independent of measure theory, on the other hand, this result together with only elementary functional analysis, can generate measure theory itself. The mentioned result was also known before the appearance of measure theory, but the original proof was very complicated. For this reason this result, when presented in teaching, is generally obtained based on measure theory. Later, Eberlein gave an elementary, but still relatively complicated proof, and there were other simpler proofs but burdened with complicated concepts, like measure theory. In this paper we give a short and elementary proof even for the following strenghened form of the mentioned result: a bounded sequence of continuous functions defined on a compact topological space K pointwise converging to zero, has a suitable convexification converging also uniformly to zero on $K,$ thus, e.g., the original sequence converges weakly to zero in C(K). This fact can also be used in the proof of the Krein-Smulian theorem. The usual proof beyond the simple tools of the functional analysis, uses heavy embedding theorems and the Riesz' representation theorem with the whole apparatus of measure theory. Our main result, however, reduces the cited proof to a form in which we need abstract tools only, namely the Hahn-Banach separation theorem and Alaoglu's theorem, without Riesz' representation or any statement of measure theory.

Abstract:In this paper we consider Kakutani's extension of the Brouwer fixed point theorem within the framework of Bishop's constructive mathematics. Kakutani's fixed point theorem is classically equivalent to Brouwer's fixed point theorem. The constructive proof of (an approximate) Brouwer's fixed point theorem relies on a finite combinatorial argument; consequently we must restrict our attention to uniformly continuous functions. Since Brouwer's fixed point theorem is a special case of Kakutani's, the mappings in any constructive version of Kakutani's fixed point theorem must also satisfy some form of uniform continuity. We discuss the difficulties involved in finding an appropriate notion of uniform continuity, before giving a constructive version of Kakutani's fixed point theorem which is classically equivalent to the standard formulation. We also consider the reverse constructive mathematics of Kakutani's fixed point theorem, and provide a constructive proof of Kakutani's first application of his theorem---a generalisation of von Neumann's minimax theorem.
A finitary Kronecker's lemma and large deviations in the Strong Law of Large numbers on Banach spaces

Abstract:We explore the computational content of Kronecker's lemma via the proof-theoretic perspective of proof mining and utilise the resulting finitary variant of this fundamental result to provide new rates for the Strong Law of Large Numbers for random variables taking values in type $p$ Banach spaces, which in particular are very uniform in the sense that they do not depend on the distribution of the random variables. Furthermore, we provide computability-theoretic arguments to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of Kronecker's lemma and investigate the result from the perspective of Reverse Mathematics. In addition, we demonstrate how this ineffectiveness from Kronecker's lemma trickles down to the Strong Law of Large Numbers by providing a construction that shows that computable rates of convergence are not always possible. Lastly, we demonstrate how Kronecker's lemma falls under a class of deterministic formulas whose solution to their Dialectica interpretation satisfies a continuity property and how, for such formulas, one obtains an upgrade principle that allows one to lift computational interpretations of deterministic results to quantitative results for their probabilistic analogue. This result generalises the previous work of the author and Pischke.

Abstract:The Machado--Bishop theorem for weighted vector-valued functions vanishing at infinity has been extensively studied. In this paper, we give an analogue of Machado's distance formula for bounded weighted vector-valued functions. A number of applications are given; in particular, some types of the Bishop--Stone--Weierstrass theorem for bounded vector-valued continuous spaces in the uniform topology are discussed; the splitting of $C(I \times J, X \otimes Y)$ as the closure of $C(I, X) \otimes C(J, Y)$ in different senses and the extension of continuous vector-valued functions are studied.

Abstract:Abstract Let be a subset of a Hilbert space. We prove that if is such that for all and all non‐negative that add up to one, then for any 1‐Lipschitz , with , there exists a 1‐Lipschitz extension of such that the uniform distance on between and is the same as the uniform distance on between and . Moreover, if either or is convex, we prove the converse: We show that a map that allows for a 1‐Lipschitz, uniform distance preserving extension of any 1‐Lipschitz map on a subset of also satisfies the above set of inequalities. We also prove a similar continuity result concerning extensions of monotone maps. Our results hold true also for maps taking values in infinite‐dimensional spaces.

Abstract:In this paper we study important quantities defined from solutions of first order linear systems of ordinary differential equations. It will be proved that many quantities, such as solutions, eigenvalues of one-dimensional Dirac operators, Lyapunov exponents and rotation numbers, depend on the coefficients in a very strong way. That is, they are not only continuous in coefficients with respect to the usual L p topologies, but also with respect to the weak topologies of the L p spaces. The continuity results of this paper are a basis to study these quantities in a quantitative way.

Abstract:The enterprise of comparing mathematical theorems according to their logical strength is an active area in mathematical logic, with one of the most common frameworks for doing so being reverse mathematics. In this setting, one investigates which theorems provably imply which others in a weak formal theory roughly corresponding to computable mathematics. Since the proofs of such implications take place in classical logic, they may in principle involve appeals to multiple applications of a particular theorem, or to non-uniform decisions about how to proceed in a given construction. In practice, however, if a theorem Q \mathsf {Q} implies a theorem P \mathsf {P} , it is usually because there is a direct uniform translation of the problems represented by P \mathsf {P} into the problems represented by Q \mathsf {Q} , in a precise sense formalized by Weihrauch reducibility. We study this notion of uniform reducibility in the context of several natural combinatorial problems, and compare and contrast it with the traditional notion of implication in reverse mathematics. We show, for instance, that for all n , j , k ≥ 1 n,j,k \geq 1 , if j > k j > k , then Ramsey’s theorem for n n -tuples and k k many colors is not uniformly, or Weihrauch, reducible to Ramsey’s theorem for n n -tuples and j j many colors. The two theorems are classically equivalent, so our analysis gives a genuinely finer metric by which to gauge the relative strength of mathematical propositions. We also study Weak König’s Lemma, the Thin Set Theorem, and the Rainbow Ramsey’s Theorem, along with a number of their variants investigated in the literature. Weihrauch reducibility turns out to be connected with sequential forms of mathematical principles, where one wishes to solve infinitely many instances of a particular problem simultaneously. We exploit this connection to uncover new points of difference between combinatorial problems previously thought to be more closely related.

Abstract:We investigate limit theorems for Birkhoff sums of locally Hölder functions under the iteration of Gibbs-Markov maps. Aaronson and Denker have given sufficient conditions to have limit theorems in this setting. We show that these conditions are also necessary: there is no exotic limit theorem for Gibbs-Markov maps. Our proofs, valid under very weak regularity assumptions, involve weak perturbation theory and interpolation spaces. For L2 observables, we also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions to control the speed of convergence in the central limit theorem.

Abstract:We show how critical point linking theory can be carried over to situations (such as infinite-dimensional splitting) where linking does not occur, provided an additional assumption is made on the functional. Abstract:We prove conservativity results for weak Kőnig's lemma that extend the celebrated result of Harrington (for $\Pi^1_1$-statements) and are somewhat orthogonal to the extension by Simpson, Tanaka and Yamazaki (for statements of the form $\forall X\exists!Y\psi$ with arithmetical $\psi$). In particular, we show that $\mathsf{WKL}_0$ is conservative over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$ for well-ordering principles. We also show that compactness (which characterizes weak Kőnig's lemma) is dispensable for certain results about continuous functions with isolated singularities.

Abstract:This paper describes Fatou's lemma for a sequence of measures converging weakly to a finite measure and for a sequence of functions whose negative parts are uniformly integrable with respect to these measures. The paper also provides new formulations of uniform Fatou's lemma, uniform Lebesgue's convergence theorem, the Dunford--Pettis theorem, and the fundamental theorem for Young measures based on the equivalence of uniform integrability and the apparently weaker property of asymptotic uniform integrability for sequences of functions and finite measures.

Abstract:We prove a generalization of van der Corput's Difference Theorem in the theory of uniform distribution by establishing a connection with unitary operators that have Lebesgue spectrum. This allows us to show, for example, that if $(x_n)_{n = 1}^\infty \subseteq [0,1]$ is such that $(x_{n+h}-x_n)_{n = 1}^\infty$ is uniformly distributed for all $h \in \mathbb{N}$, then $(x_{n_k})_{k = 1}^\infty$ is uniformly distributed, where $(n_k)_{k = 1}^\infty$ is an enumeration of the $1s$ in the classical Thue-Morse sequence. We also establish a variant of van der Corput's Difference Theorem that is connected to unitary operators with continuous spectrum. Lastly, we obtain a new characterization of those sequence $(x_n)_{n = 1}^\infty \subseteq [0,1]$ for which $(x_{n+h},x_n)_{n = 1}^\infty$ is uniformly distributed in $[0,1]^2$ for all $h \in \mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:We derive new variants of the quantitative Borel--Cantelli lemma and apply them to analysis of statistical properties for some dynamical systems. We consider intermittent maps of $(0,1]$ which have absolutely continuous invariant probability measures. In particular, we prove that every sequence of intervals with left endpoints uniformly separated from zero is the strong Borel--Cantelli sequence with respect to such map and invariant measure.

Abstract:The behavior of physical systems is typically modeled using differential equations which are too complex to solve analytically. In practical problems, these equations are discretized on a computational domain, and numerical solutions are computed. A numerical scheme is called convergent, if in the limit of infinitesimal discretization, the bounds on the discretization error is also infinitesimally small. The approximate solution converges to the "true solution" in this limit. The Lax equivalence theorem enables a proof of convergence given consistency and stability of the method. In this work, we formally prove the Lax equivalence theorem using the Coq Proof Assistant. We assume a continuous linear differential operator between complete normed spaces, and define an equivalent mapping in the discretized space. Given that the numerical method is consistent (i.e., the discretization error tends to zero as the discretization step tends to zero), and the method is stable (i.e., the error is uniformly bounded), we formally prove that the approximate solution converges to the true solution. We then demonstrate convergence of the difference scheme on an example problem by proving both its consistency and stability, and then applying the Lax equivalence theorem. In order to prove consistency, we use the Taylor-Lagrange theorem by formally showing that the discretization error is bounded above by the nth power of the discretization step, where n is the order of the truncated Taylor polynomial.

Abstract:The main aim of this paper is to prove a Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás type theorem on the unital uniform algebra A_{w^*u}(B_{X^*}) consisting of all w^*-uniformly continuous functions on the closed unit ball B_{X^*} which are holomorphic on the interior of B_{X^*}. We show that this result holds for A_{w^*u}(B_{X^*}) if X^* is uniformly convex or X^* is the uniformly complex convex dual space of an order continuous absolute normed space.
