Abstract:Let $A$ be a finite nonempty set of integers. An asymptotic estimate of several dilates sum size was obtained by Bukh. The unique known exact bound concerns the sum $|A+k\cdot A|,$ where $k$ is a prime and $|A|$ is large. In its full generality, this bound is due to Cilleruelo, Serra and the first author. Let $k$ be an odd prime and assume that $|A|>8k^{k}.$ A corollary to our main result states that $|2\cdot A+k\cdot A|\ge (k+2)|A|-k^2-k+2.$ Notice that $|2\cdot P+k\cdot P|=(k+2)|P|-2k,$ if $P$ is an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:Given a set of integers $A$ and an integer $k$, write $A+k\cdot A$ for the set $\{a+kb:a\in A,b\in A\}$. Hanson and Petridis showed that if $|A+A|\le K|A|$ then $|A+2\cdot A|\le K^{2.95}|A|$. At a presentation of this result, Petridis stated that the highest known value for $\frac{\log(|A+2\cdot A|/|A|)}{\log(|A+A|/|A|)}$ (bounded above by 2.95) was $\frac{\log 4}{\log 3}$. We show that, for all $\epsilon>0$, there exist $A$ and $K$ with $|A+A|\le K|A|$ but with $|A+2\cdot A|\ge K^{2-\epsilon}|A|$. Further, we analyse a method of Ruzsa, and generalise it to give continuous analogues of the sizes of sumsets, differences and dilates. We apply this method to a construction of Hennecart, Robert and Yudin to prove that, for all $\epsilon>0$, there exists a set $A$ with $|A-A|\ge |A|^{2-\epsilon}$ but with $|A+A|<|A|^{1.7354+\epsilon}$. Abstract:For $p$ prime, $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ and $\lambda \in \mathbb{Z}$, the sum of dilates $A + \lambda \cdot A$ is defined by \[A + \lambda \cdot A = \{a + \lambda a' : a, a' \in A\}.\] The basic problem on such sums of dilates asks for the minimum size of $|A + \lambda \cdot A|$ for given $\lambda$, $A$ of given density $\alpha$, and $p$ tending to infinity. We investigate this problem for $\alpha$ fixed and $\lambda$ tending to infinity, proving near-optimal bounds in this case.

On the sum of two affine Cantor sets

Abstract:Suppose that $K$ and $ K'$ are two affine Cantor sets. It is shown that the sum set $K+K'$ has equal box and Hausdorff dimensions and in this number named $s$, $H^s(K+K')<\infty$. Moreover, for almost every pair $(K,K')$ satisfying $HD(K)+HD(K')\leq 1$, there is a dense subset $D\subset \mathbb R$ such that $H^s(K+\lambda K')=0$, for all $\lambda\in D$. It also is shown that in the context of affine Cantor sets with two increasing maps, there are generically (topological and almost everywhere) five possible structures for their sum: a Cantor set, an L, R, M-Cantorval or a finite union of closed intervals.

Abstract:We prove a Johns theorem for simplices in $R^d$ with positive dilation factor $d+2$, which improves the previously known $d^2$ upper bound. This bound is tight in view of the $d$ lower bound. Furthermore, we give an example that $d$ isn't the optimal lower bound when $d=2$. Our results answered both questions regarding Johns theorem for simplices with positive dilation raised by \cite{leme2020costly}.

Abstract:The article deals with isometric dilation and commutant lifting for a class of $n$-tuples $(n \geq 3)$ of commuting contractions. We show that operator tuples in the class dilate to tuples of commuting isometries of BCL type. As a consequence of such an explicit dilation, we show that their von Neumann inequality holds on a one dimensional variety of the closed unit polydisc. On the basis of such a dilation, we prove a commutant lifting theorem of Sarason's type by establishing that every commutant can be lifted to the dilation space in a commuting and norm preserving manner. This further leads us to find yet another class of $n$-tuples $(n\geq 3)$ of commuting contractions each of which possesses isometric dilation.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:In this paper and its sequel we classify the set $S$ of all real parameter pairs $(\alpha,\beta)$ such that the dilated floor functions $f_\alpha(x) = \lfloor{\alpha x}\rfloor$ and $f_\beta(x) = \lfloor{\beta x}\rfloor$ have a nonnegative commutator, i.e. $ [ f_{\alpha}, f_{\beta}](x) = \lfloor{\alpha \lfloor{\beta x}\rfloor}\rfloor - \lfloor{\beta \lfloor{\alpha x}\rfloor}\rfloor \geq 0$ for all real $x$. The relation $[f_\alpha,f_\beta]\geq 0$ induces a preorder on the set of non-zero dilation factors $\alpha, \beta$, which extends the divisibility partial order on positive integers. This paper treats the cases where at least one of the dilation parameters $\alpha$ or $\beta$ is nonnegative. The analysis of the positive dilations case is related to the theory of Beatty sequences and to the Diophantine Frobenius problem in two generators.

Zygmund dilations: bilinear analysis and commutator estimates

Abstract:We develop both bilinear theory and commutator estimates in the context of entangled dilations, specifically Zygmund dilations $(x_1, x_2, x_3) \mapsto (\delta_1 x_1, \delta_2 x_2, \delta_1 \delta_2 x_3)$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We construct bilinear versions of recent dyadic multiresolution methods for Zygmund dilations and apply them to prove a paraproduct free $T1$ theorem for bilinear singular integrals invariant under Zygmund dilations. Independently, we prove linear commutator estimates even when the underlying singular integrals do not satisfy weighted estimates with Zygmund weights. This requires new paraproduct estimates.

Abstract:The aim of this note is to exploit a new relationship between additive combinatorics and the geometry of monomial projective curves. We associate to a finite set of non-negative integers a monomial projective curve such that the Hilbert function of and the cardinalities of agree. The singularities of determines the asymptotic behaviour of | sA |, equivalently the Hilbert polynomial of , and the asymptotic structure of sA . We show that some additive inverse problems can be translate to the rigidity of Hilbert polynomials and we improve an upper bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of monomial projective curves by using results of additive combinatorics.

Abstract:We show that if $\mathcal{L}_1$ and $\mathcal{L}_2$ are linear transformations from $\mathbb{Z}^d$ to $\mathbb{Z}^d$ satisfying certain mild conditions, then, for any finite subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $$|\mathcal{L}_1 A+\mathcal{L}_2 A|\geq \left(|\det(\mathcal{L}_1)|^{1/d}+|\det(\mathcal{L}_2)|^{1/d}\right)^d|A|- o(|A|).$$ This result corrects and confirms the two-summand case of a conjecture of Bukh and is best possible up to the lower-order term for certain choices of $\mathcal{L}_1$ and $\mathcal{L}_2$. As an application, we prove a lower bound for $|A + \lambda \cdot A|$ when $A$ is a finite set of real numbers and $\lambda$ is an algebraic number. In particular, when $\lambda$ is of the form $(p/q)^{1/d}$ for some $p, q, d \in \mathbb{N}$, each taken as small as possible for such a representation, we show that $$|A + \lambda \cdot A| \geq (p^{1/d} + q^{1/d})^d |A| - o(|A|).$$ This is again best possible up to the lower-order term and extends a recent result of Krachun and Petrov which treated the case $\lambda = \sqrt{2}$.

Abstract:We show that if V is a subvariety of the affine N-space defined by polynomials of degree at most d, then the sum of its $\ell$-adic Betti numbers does not exceed $2(N + 1)^{2N +1}(d+ 1)^N$. This answers a question of Katz (FFA 2001).

Abstract:Let denote the d-dimensional vector space over the finite field with q elements. Define for . Let , A be a nonempty subset of and , where . If , our main result demonstrates that when the size of the set E satisfies , where is a constant depending solely on k, it is possible to find two -tuples in E such that one of them is dilated by r with respect to the other, but only along edges. To be more precise, we establish the existence of and such that, for , we have , with the conditions that and for , provided that and . We provide two distinct proofs of this result. The first uses the technique of group actions, a powerful method for addressing such problems, while the second is based on elementary combinatorial reasoning. Additionally, we establish that in dimension 2, the threshold is sharp when . As a corollary of the main result, by varying the underlying set A, we determine thresholds for the existence of dilated k-cycles, k-paths and k-stars (where ) with a dilation ratio of . These results improve and generalise the findings of Xie and Ge ['Some results on similar configurations in subsets of ', Finite Fields Appl.91 (2023), Article no. 102252, 20 pages].

On the theorem of Davenport and generalized Dedekind sums

Abstract:A symmetrized lattice of $2n$ points in terms of an irrational real number $\alpha$ is considered in the unit square, as in the theorem of Davenport. If $\alpha$ is a quadratic irrational, the square of the $L^2$ discrepancy is found to be $c( \alpha ) \log n + O \left( \log \log n \right)$ for a computable positive constant $c( \alpha )$. For the golden ratio $\varphi$, the value $\sqrt{c (\varphi ) \log n}$ yields the smallest $L^2$ discrepancy of any sequence of explicitly constructed finite point sets in the unit square. If the partial quotients $a_k$ of $\alpha$ grow at most polynomially fast, the $L^2$ discrepancy is found in terms of $a_k$ up to an explicitly bounded error term. It is also shown that certain generalized Dedekind sums can be approximated using the same methods. For a special generalized Dedekind sum with arguments $a, b$ an asymptotic formula in terms of the partial quotients of $\frac{a}{b}$ is proved.

$k$ Summands of Syzygies over Rings of Positive Burch Index Via Canonical Resolutions

Abstract:In recent work, Dao and Eisenbud define the notion of a Burch index, expanding the notion of Burch rings of Dao, Kobayashi, and Takahashi, and show that for any module over a ring of Burch index at least 2, its $n$th syzygy contains direct summands of the residue field for $n=4$ or $5$ and all $n\geq 7$. We investigate how this behavior is explained by the bar resolution formed from appropriate differential graded (dg) resolutions, yielding a new proof that includes all $n\geq 5$, which is sharp. When the module is Golod, we use instead the bar resolution formed from $A_\infty$ resolutions to identify such $k$ summands explicitly for all $n\geq 4$ and show that the number of these grows exponentially as the homological degree increases.
