Abstract:We show that, consistently, every MAD family has cardinality strictly bigger than the dominating number, that is a > d, thus solving one of the oldest problems on cardinal invariants of the continuum. The method is a contribution to the theory of iterated forcing for making the continuum large.

Abstract:This is a revised version (of late 2020) of [Sh:700], which is <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0012170" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0012170">arXiv:math/0012170</a> . First point is noting that the proof of Theorem 4.3 in [Sh:700], which says that the proof giving the consistency $ \mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{d} = \mathfrak{u} < \mathfrak{a} $ also gives $ \mathfrak{s} = \mathfrak{d} $. The proof uses a measurable cardinal and a c.c.c. forcing so it gives large $ \mathfrak{d} $ and assumes a large cardinal. Second point is adding to the results of \S2,\S3 which say that (in \S3 with no large cardinals) we can force $ {\aleph_1} < \mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{d} < \mathfrak{a}$. We like to have $ {\aleph_1} < \mathfrak{s} \le \mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{d} < \mathfrak{a} $. For this we allow in \S2,\S3 the sets $ K_t $ to be uncountable; this requires non-essential changes. In particular, we replace usually $ {\aleph_0}, {\aleph_1} $ by $ \sigma , \partial $. Naturally we can deal with $ \mathfrak{i} $ and similar invariants. Third we proofread the work again. To get $ \mathfrak{s} $ we could have retained the countability of the member of the $ I_t$-s but the parameters would change with $ A \in I_t$, well for a cofinal set of them; but the present seems simpler. We intend to continue in [Sh:F2009].

Abstract:We throw some light on the question: is there a MAD family (= a family of infinite subsets of N, the intersection of any two is finite) which is completely separable (i.e. any X subseteq N is included in a finite union of members of the family or include a member of the family). We prove that it is hard to prove the consistency of the negation: (a) if 2^{aleph_0} < aleph_omega, then there is such a family (b) if there is no such families then some situation related to pcf holds whose consistency is large.

Abstract:A function f from reals to reals (f:R->R) is almost continuous (in the sense of Stallings) iff every open set in the plane which contains the graph of f contains the graph of a continuous function. Natkaniec showed that for any family F of continuum many real functions there exists g:R->R such that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Let AA be the smallest cardinality of a family F of real functions for which there is no g:R->R with the property that f+g is almost continuous for every f in F. Thus Natkaniec showed that AA is strictly greater than the continuum. He asked if anything more could be said. We show that the cofinality of AA is greater than the continuum, c. Moreover, we show that it is pretty much all that can be said about AA in ZFC, by showing that AA can be equal to any regular cardinal between c^+ and 2^c (with 2^c arbitrarily large). We also show that AA = AD where AD is defined similarly to AA but for the class of Darboux functions. This solves another problem of Maliszewski and Natkaniec.

Abstract:We prove in ZFC that there is a MAD family of functions in omega^omega which is also maximal with respect to infinite partial functions. This solves a 20 year old question of Van Douwen. We also strengthen a result of J. Steprans stating that strongly MAD families of functions cannot be analytic. We show that analytic MAD families of functions, if they exist, must satisfy some strong constraints.

Abstract:It is known that the large cardinal strength of the Axiom of Determinacy when enhanced with the hypothesis that all sets of reals are universally Baire is much stronger than the Axiom of Determinacy itself. Sargsyan conjectured it to be as strong as the existence of a cardinal that is both a limit of Woodin cardinals and a limit of strong cardinals. Larson, Sargsyan and Wilson used a generalization of Woodin's derived model construction to show that this conjectured result would be optimal. In this paper we introduce a new translation procedure for hybrid mice extending work of Steel, Zhu and Sargsyan and apply it to prove Sargsyan's conjecture.

Abstract:We consider the definability of mad families in vector spaces of the form $\underset{n<\omega}{\bigoplus} F$ where $F$ is a field of cardinality $\leq \aleph_0$. We show that there is no analytic mad family of subspaces when $F=\mathbb{F}_2$, partially answering a question of Smythe. Our proof relies on a variant of Mathias forcing restricted to a certain idempotent ultrafilter whose existence follows from Glazer's proof of Hindman's theorem.

Abstract:We introduce exacting cardinals and a strengthening of these, ultraexacting cardinals. These are natural large cardinals defined equivalently as weak forms of rank-Berkeley cardinals, strong forms of Jónsson cardinals, or in terms of principles of structural reflection. However, they challenge commonly held intuition on strong axioms of infinity. We prove that ultraexacting cardinals are consistent with Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory with the Axiom of Choice (ZFC) relative to the existence of an I0 embedding. However, the existence of an ultraexacting cardinal below a measurable cardinal implies the consistency of ZFC with a proper class of I0 embeddings, thus challenging the linear-incremental picture of the large cardinal hierarchy. We show that the existence of an exacting cardinal implies that V is not equal to HOD (Gödel's universe of Hereditarily Ordinal Definable sets), showing that these cardinals surpass the current hierarchy of large cardinals consistent with ZFC. We prove that the consistency of ZFC with an exacting cardinal above an extendible cardinal refutes Woodin's HOD Conjecture and Ultimate-L Conjecture. Finally, we establish the consistency of ZFC with the existence of an exacting cardinal above an extendible cardinal from the consistency of ZF with certain large cardinals beyond choice.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of almost disjoint families which we call fin-intersecting almost disjoint families. They are related to almost disjoint families whose Vietoris Hyperspace of their Isbell-Mrówka spaces are pseudocompact. We show that under $\mathfrak p=\mathfrak c$ fin-intersecting MAD families exist generically and they also exist if $\mathfrak{a<s}$, but that there are also non fin-intersecting MAD families in ZFC. We also show that under CH, there exists fin intersecting MAD families which remain like that after adding an arbitrary quantity of Cohen reals and Random reals. These results give more models in which pseudocompact MAD families exist.

Intersections of multiplicative translates of $3$-adic Cantor sets II: two infinite families

Abstract:This paper continues the study of the structure of finite intersections of general multiplicative translates $\mathcal{C}(M_1,\ldots,M_n)=\frac{1}{M_1}\Sigma_{3,\bar{2}}\cap\cdots\cap\frac{1}{M_n}\Sigma_{3,\bar{2}}$ for integers $1\leq M_1<\cdots<M_n$, where $\Sigma_{3,\bar{2}}$ denotes the $3$-adic Cantor set. This study was motivated by questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the $3$-adic integers $\mathbb{Z}_3$ given by multiplication by $2$. The exceptional set $\mathcal{E}(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ is defined to be the set of all elements of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ whose forward orbits under this action intersect the $3$-adic Cantor set $\Sigma_{3,\bar{2}}$ infinitely many times. It is conjectured that it has Hausdorff dimension $0$. Part I showed that upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional set can be extracted from knowing Hausdorff dimensions of sets of the kind above, in cases where all $M_i$ are powers of $2$. These intersection sets were shown to be fractals whose points have $3$-adic expansions describable by labeled paths in a finite automaton, whose Hausdorff dimension is exactly computable and is of the form $\log_3(\beta)$ where $\beta$ is a real algebraic integer. It gave algorithms for determination of the automaton, and computed examples showing that the dependence of the automaton and the value $\beta$ on the parameters $(M_1,\ldots,M_n)$ is complicated. The present paper studies two new infinite families of examples, illustrating interesting behavior of the automata and of the Hausdorff dimension of the associated fractals. One family has associated automata whose directed graph has a nested sequence of strongly connected components of arbitrarily large depth. The second family leads to an improved upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of $\mathcal{E}(\mathbb{Z}_3)$ of $\log_3 \phi \approx 0.438018$, where $\phi$ denotes the Golden ratio.

Abstract:We investigate in ZFC what can be the family of large enough cardinals mu in which an a.e.c. K is categorical or even just solvable. We show that for not few cardinals lambda<mu there is a superlimit model in K_lambda. Moreover, our main result is that we can find a good lambda-frame s categorical in lambda such that K_s subseteq K_lambda. We then show how to use [Sh:705] to get categoricity in every large enough cardinality if K has cases of mu-amalgamation for enough mu and 2^mu<2^{mu^{+1}} <... < 2^{mu^{+n}}... for enough mu.

Abstract:We investigate the mathematics of a model of the human mind which has been proposed by the psychologist Jens Mammen. Mathematical realizations of this model consist of so-called \emph{Mammen spaces}, where a Mammen space is a triple $(U,\mathcal S,\mathcal C)$, where $U$ is a non-empty set ("the universe"), $\mathcal S$ is a perfect Hausdorff topology on $U$, and $\mathcal C\subseteq\mathcal P(U)$ together with $\mathcal S$ satisfy certain axioms. We refute a conjecture put forward by J. Hoffmann-Jørgensen, who conjectured that the existence of a "complete" Mammen space implies the Axiom of Choice, by showing that in the first Cohen model, in which ZF holds but AC fails, there is a complete Mammen space. We obtain this by proving that in the first Cohen model, every perfect topology can be extended to a maximal perfect topology. On the other hand, we also show that if all sets are Lebesgue measurable, or all sets are Baire measurable, then there are no complete Mammen spaces with a countable universe. Finally, we investigate two new cardinal invariants $\mathfrak u_M$ and $\mathfrak u_T$ associated with complete Mammen spaces and maximal perfect topologies, and establish some basic inequalities that are provable in ZFC. We show $\mathfrak u_M=\mathfrak u_T=2^{\aleph_0}$ follows from Martin's Axiom, and, contrastingly, we show that $\aleph_1=\mathfrak u_M=\mathfrak u_T<2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_2$ in the Baumgartner-Laver model.

Abstract:We study some connections between definability in generalized descriptive set theory and large cardinals, particularly measurable cardinals and limits thereof, working in ZFC. We show that if $\kappa$ is a limit of measurable cardinals then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ wellorder of a subset of $P(\kappa)$ of length $\geq\kappa^+$; this answers a question of Lücke and Müller. However, in $M_1$, the minimal proper class mouse with a Woodin cardinal, for every uncountable cardinal $\kappa$ which is not a limit of measurables, there is a $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\{\kappa\})$ good wellorder of $H_{\kappa^+}$. If $\kappa$ is a limit of measurables then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ mad family $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$, and if also $\mathrm{cof}(\kappa)>\omega$ then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ almost disjoint family $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$. However, relative to the consistency of large cardinals, $\Pi_1(\{\kappa\})$ mad families and maximal independent families $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ can exist, when $\kappa$ is a limit of measurables, and even more. We also examine some of the features of $L[U]$, and answer another question of Lücke and Müller, showing that if $\kappa$ is a weakly compact cardinal such that every $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\{\kappa\})$ subset of $P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$ has a subset which is the range of a perfect function, then there is an inner model satisfying "there is a weakly compact limit of measurable cardinals".

Abstract:We investigate the provability of classical combinatorial theorems in ZF. Using combinatorial arguments, we establish the following results for each infinite cardinal ${\kappa}\in On$, (1) ${\kappa}^+\to ({\kappa},{\omega}+1)$, (2) any family $\mathcal A\subset [{On}]^{<{\omega}}$ of size ${\kappa}^+$ contains a $\Delta$-system of size ${\kappa}$, (3) given a set mapping $F:{\kappa}\to {[{\kappa}]}^{<{\omega}}$, the set ${\kappa}$ has a partition into ${\omega}$-many $F$-free sets, By employing Karagila's method of absoluteness, we prove the following for each uncountable cardinal ${\kappa}\in On$, (4) given a set mapping $F:{\kappa}\to {[{\kappa}^]}^{<{\omega}}$, there is an $F$-free set of cardinality ${\kappa}$, (5) for each natural number $n$, every family $\mathcal A\subset {[{\kappa}]}^{\omega}$with $|A\cap B|\le n$ for $\{A,B\}\in {[\mathcal A]}^{2}$ has property $B$, In contrast to (5), we show that the following statement is not provable from ZF + $cf({\omega}_1)={\omega}_1$: (6*) every family $\mathcal A\subset {[{\omega}_1]}^{\omega}$ with $|A\cap B|\le 1$ for $\{A,B\}\in {[\mathcal A]}^{2}$ is "essentially disjoint" . The following statements are not provable in ZF, but they are equivalent in ZF: (i) $cf({\omega}_1)={\omega}_1$, (ii) ${\omega}_1\to ({\omega}_1,{\omega}+1)^2$, (iii) any family $\mathcal A\subset [{On}]^{<{\omega}}$ of size ${\omega}_1$ contains a $\Delta$-system of size ${\omega}_1$. A function $f$ is a "uniform denumeration on ${\omega}_1$" iff $dom(f)={\omega}_1$ and for every ${\alpha}<{\omega}_1$, $f({\alpha})$ is a function from ${\omega}$ onto ${\alpha}$. It is evident that the existence of a uniform denumeration of ${\omega}_1$ implies $cf({\omega}_1)={\omega}_1$. We prove that the failure of the reverse implication is equiconsistent with the existence of an inaccessible cardinal.

Abstract:Intersection models of generic extensions obtained from a commutative projection systems of notions of forcing has recently regained interest, especially in the study of descriptive set theory. Here, we show that it provides a fruitful framework that opens the door to solving some open problems concerning compactness principles of small cardinals. To exemplify, from suitable assumptions, we construct intersection models satisfying ZFC and any of the following: 1. There is a weakly compact cardinal $\kappa$ carrying an indecomposable ultrafilter, yet $\kappa$ is not measurable. This answers a question of Ketonen from the late 1970's. 2. For proper class many cardinals $\lambda$, the least $\lambda$-strongly compact cardinal is singular. This answers a question of Bagaria and Magidor who asked for merely two such cardinals. 3. There is a strongly inaccessible cardinal whose $C$-sequence number is a singular cardinal. This answers a question of Lambie-Hanson and the first author.

Abstract:Thin sums matroids were introduced to extend the notion of representability to non-finitary matroids. We give a new criterion for testing when the thin sums construction gives a matroid. We show that thin sums matroids over thin families are precisely the duals of representable matroids (those arising from vector spaces). We also show that the class of tame thin sums matroids is closed under duality and under taking minors, by giving a new characterisation of the matroids in this class. Finally, we show that all the matroids naturally associated to an infinite graph are tame thin sums matroids.
