Abstract:The mad spectrum is the set of all cardinalities of infinite maximal almost disjoint families on omega. We treat the problem to characterize those sets A which, in some forcing extension of the universe, can be the mad spectrum. We solve this problem to some extent. What remains open is the possible values of min(A) and max(A).

Abstract:We throw some light on the question: is there a MAD family (= a family of infinite subsets of N, the intersection of any two is finite) which is completely separable (i.e. any X subseteq N is included in a finite union of members of the family or include a member of the family). We prove that it is hard to prove the consistency of the negation: (a) if 2^{aleph_0} < aleph_omega, then there is such a family (b) if there is no such families then some situation related to pcf holds whose consistency is large.

Abstract:We consider the definability of mad families in vector spaces of the form $\underset{n<\omega}{\bigoplus} F$ where $F$ is a field of cardinality $\leq \aleph_0$. We show that there is no analytic mad family of subspaces when $F=\mathbb{F}_2$, partially answering a question of Smythe. Our proof relies on a variant of Mathias forcing restricted to a certain idempotent ultrafilter whose existence follows from Glazer's proof of Hindman's theorem.

Abstract:In 2006, Gudder [Math. Slovaca 56, 573 (2006)] introduced a logic order ≼ on bounded quantum observable set S(H). In 2007, Pulmannova and Vincekova [Math Slovaca 57, 589 (2007)] proved that for each subset D of S(H), the infimum of D exists with respect to the logic order ≼. In 2008, Liu and Wu [J. Math. Phys. 49, 073521 (2008)] found a representation of the infimum A∧B for A,B∊S(H), and by using the limit methods, they gave out a representation for the infimum of D. But, that representation is complicated. In this paper, we present a simpler spectral representation for the infimum of D with respect to the logic order ≼.

Abstract:We prove in ZFC that there is a MAD family of functions in omega^omega which is also maximal with respect to infinite partial functions. This solves a 20 year old question of Van Douwen. We also strengthen a result of J. Steprans stating that strongly MAD families of functions cannot be analytic. We show that analytic MAD families of functions, if they exist, must satisfy some strong constraints.

Abstract:The Cantor measures μq,b$$\mu _{q, b}$$ with 2=q,b/q∈Z$$2 = q, b/q \in {\mathbb Z}$$ are few of known singular continuous measures that admits a spectrum. The spectra of Cantor measures μq,b$$\mu _{q, b}$$ are not unique and their structure is not well-studied. It has been observed that maximal orthogonal sets of the Cantor measure μq,b$$\mu _{q, b}$$ have tree structure and they can be built by selecting maximal tree appropriately. A challenging problem is when a maximal orthogonal set becomes a spectrum. In this paper, we introduce a measurement on the tree structure associated with a maximal orthogonal set Λ$$\Lambda $$ of the Cantor measure μq,b$$\mu _{q, b}$$, and we use boundedness and linear increment of that measurement to justify whether Λ$$\Lambda $$ is a spectrum or not. As applications of our justification, we provide a characterization for the expanding set KΛ$$K\Lambda $$ of a spectrum Λ$$\Lambda $$ to be a spectrum again. Furthermore, we construct a spectrum Λ$$\Lambda $$ such that for some integer K, the shrinking set Λ/K$$\Lambda /K$$ is a maximal orthogonal set but not a spectrum.

Abstract:We show that, consistently, every MAD family has cardinality strictly bigger than the dominating number, that is a > d, thus solving one of the oldest problems on cardinal invariants of the continuum. The method is a contribution to the theory of iterated forcing for making the continuum large.

Abstract:Call a subset of $\mathbf{FIN}_k$ small if it does not contain a copy of $\langle{P\rangle}$ for some infinite block sequence $P \in \mathbf{FIN}_k^{[\infty]}$. Gowers' $\mathbf{FIN}_k$ theorem asserts that the set of small subsets of $\mathbf{FIN}_k$ forms an ideal, so it is sensible to consider almost disjoint families of $\mathbf{FIN}_k$ with respect to the ideal of small subsets of $\mathbf{FIN}_k$. We shall show that $\mathfrak{a}_{\mathbf{FIN}_k}$, the smallest possible cardinality of an infinite mad family of $\mathbf{FIN}_k$, is uncountable.

Abstract:We introduce an analog of the Ziegler spectrum for maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a complete Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We define a topology on the space of isomorphism classes of indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules and investigate the topological structure. We also calculate the Cantor-Bendixson rank for a ring which is of CM_+-finite representation type.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of almost disjoint families which we call fin-intersecting almost disjoint families. They are related to almost disjoint families whose Vietoris Hyperspace of their Isbell-Mrówka spaces are pseudocompact. We show that under $\mathfrak p=\mathfrak c$ fin-intersecting MAD families exist generically and they also exist if $\mathfrak{a<s}$, but that there are also non fin-intersecting MAD families in ZFC. We also show that under CH, there exists fin intersecting MAD families which remain like that after adding an arbitrary quantity of Cohen reals and Random reals. These results give more models in which pseudocompact MAD families exist.

Spectra of Cardinality Queries over Description Logic Knowledge Bases

Abstract:Recent works have explored the use of counting queries coupled with Description Logic ontologies. The answer to such a query in a model of a knowledge base is either an integer or $\infty$, and its spectrum is the set of its answers over all models. While it is unclear how to compute and manipulate such a set in general, we identify a class of counting queries whose spectra can be effectively represented. Focusing on atomic counting queries, we pinpoint the possible shapes of a spectrum over $\mathcal{ALCIF}$ ontologies: they are essentially the subsets of $\mathbb{N} \cup \{ \infty \}$ closed under addition. For most sublogics of $\mathcal{ALCIF}$, we show that possible spectra enjoy simpler shapes, being $[ m, \infty ]$ or variations thereof. To obtain our results, we refine constructions used for finite model reasoning and notably rely on a cycle-reversion technique for the Horn fragment of $\mathcal{ALCIF}$. We also study the data complexity of computing the proposed effective representation and establish the $\mathsf{FP}^{\mathsf{NP}[\log]}$-completeness of this task under several settings.

Abstract:We investigate the mathematics of a model of the human mind which has been proposed by the psychologist Jens Mammen. Mathematical realizations of this model consist of so-called \emph{Mammen spaces}, where a Mammen space is a triple $(U,\mathcal S,\mathcal C)$, where $U$ is a non-empty set ("the universe"), $\mathcal S$ is a perfect Hausdorff topology on $U$, and $\mathcal C\subseteq\mathcal P(U)$ together with $\mathcal S$ satisfy certain axioms. We refute a conjecture put forward by J. Hoffmann-Jørgensen, who conjectured that the existence of a "complete" Mammen space implies the Axiom of Choice, by showing that in the first Cohen model, in which ZF holds but AC fails, there is a complete Mammen space. We obtain this by proving that in the first Cohen model, every perfect topology can be extended to a maximal perfect topology. On the other hand, we also show that if all sets are Lebesgue measurable, or all sets are Baire measurable, then there are no complete Mammen spaces with a countable universe. Finally, we investigate two new cardinal invariants $\mathfrak u_M$ and $\mathfrak u_T$ associated with complete Mammen spaces and maximal perfect topologies, and establish some basic inequalities that are provable in ZFC. We show $\mathfrak u_M=\mathfrak u_T=2^{\aleph_0}$ follows from Martin's Axiom, and, contrastingly, we show that $\aleph_1=\mathfrak u_M=\mathfrak u_T<2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_2$ in the Baumgartner-Laver model.

It is proved that it is sufficient, in a certain sense, to consider the interval $[1,\dots, n]$. The study continues the work of Komlós, Sulyok, and Szemerédi.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 585-600, March 2024. It is widely believed that typical finite families of [math] matrices admit finite products that attain the joint spectral radius. This conjecture is supported by computational experiments and it naturally leads to the following question: are these spectrum maximizing products typically unique, up to cyclic permutations and powers? We answer this question negatively. As discovered by Horowitz around fifty years ago, there are products of matrices that always have the same spectral radius despite not being cyclic permutations of one another. We show that the simplest Horowitz products can be spectrum maximizing in a robust way; more precisely, we exhibit a small but nonempty open subset of pairs of [math] matrices [math] for which the products [math] and [math] are both spectrum maximizing.

Abstract:We show that both $\mathfrak{ap=c}$ and $\diamondsuit(\mathfrak{b})$ imply the existence of MAD families with pseudocompact Vietoris hyperspace, substantially expanding the list of models where their existence is known. We also discuss some properties on the structure of fin-intersecting MAD families by providing some new examples of non-fin-intersecting MAD families with special properties. We show that the Baire number of $\omega^*$ is strictly larger than $\mathfrak c$ if and only if for every MAD family $\mathcal A$, $\Psi(\mathcal A)$ and its Vietoris hyperspace are $p$-pseudocompact for some free ultrafilter $p$.
