Abstract:We expand the classic result that $\mathsf{AC}_{\mathsf{WO}}$ is equivalent to the statement "For all $X$, $\aleph(X)=\aleph^*(X)$" by proving the equivalence of many more related statements. Then, we introduce the Hartogs-Lindenbaum spectrum of a model of $\mathsf{ZF}$, and inspect the structure of these spectra in models that are obtained by a symmetric extension of a model of $\mathsf{ZFC}$. We prove that all such spectra fall into a very rigid pattern.

Abstract:We give the site-theoretic account of the spectral construction as first introduced by Coste. We provide a detailed examination of the geometric properties of the spectrum, in particular what classes of topoi it produces when applied to the different classes of objects and maps in a geometry. We also give a new proof of the spectral adjunction for set-valued models and the classifying property of the structure sheaf. We also discuss the opposition between ``gros and petit" spectra and relation with some canonical classifying sites. We then describe the general case of a modelled topos. We also prove that the spectrum of a locally modelled topos is local over its base and deduce a new proof of the spectral adjunction for the general case. We finally give several examples from the world of propositional algebras, and in particular recover classifying topoi of first order theories in various fragment of logic as spectra of some suitably modelled topoi.

The vanishing levels of a tree

Abstract:We initiate the study of the spectrum $Vspec(\kappa)$ of sets that can be realized as the vanishing levels $V(T)$ of a normal $\kappa$-tree $T$. The latter is an invariant in the sense that if $T$ and $T'$ are club-isomorphic, then the symmetric difference of $V(T)$ and $V(T')$ is nonstationary. Additional features of this invariant imply that $Vspec(\kappa)$ is closed under finite unions and intersections. The set $V(T)$ must be stationary for an homogeneous normal $\kappa$-Aronszajn tree $T$, and if there exists a special $\kappa$-Aronszajn tree, then there exists one $T$ that is homogeneous and satisfies $V(T)=\kappa$ (modulo clubs). It is consistent (from large cardinals) that there is an $\aleph_2$-Souslin tree, and yet $V(T)$ is co-stationary for every $\aleph_2$-tree $\mathbf T$. Both $V(T)=\emptyset$ and $V(T)=\kappa$ (modulo clubs) are shown to be feasible using $\kappa$-Souslin trees even at some large cardinal close to a weakly compact. It is also possible to have a family of $2^\kappa$ many $\kappa$-Souslin trees for which the corresponding family of vanishing levels forms an antichain modulo clubs.

Abstract:We prove a thick subcategory theorem for the category of $d$-excisive functors from finite spectra to spectra. This generalizes the Hopkins-Smith thick subcategory theorem (the $d=1$ case) and the $C_2$-equivariant thick subcategory theorem (the $d=2$ case). We obtain our classification theorem by completely computing the Balmer spectrum of compact $d$-excisive functors. A key ingredient is a non-abelian blueshift theorem for the generalized Tate construction associated to the family of non-transitive subgroups of products of symmetric groups. Also important are the techniques of tensor triangular geometry and striking analogies between functor calculus and equivariant homotopy theory. In particular, we introduce a functor calculus analogue of the Burnside ring and describe its Zariski spectrum à la Dress. The analogy with equivariant homotopy theory is strengthened further through two applications: We explain the effect of changing coefficients from spectra to ${\mathrm{H}\mathbb{Z}}$-modules and we establish a functor calculus analogue of transchromatic Smith-Floyd theory as developed by Kuhn-Lloyd. Our work offers a new perspective on functor calculus which builds upon the previous approaches of Arone-Ching and Glasman.

Ranks for families of theories and their spectra

Abstract:We define ranks and degrees for families of theories, similar to Morley rank and degree, as well as Cantor-Bendixson rank and degree, and the notion of totally transcendental family of theories. Bounds for $e$-spectra with respect to ranks and degrees are found. It is shown that the ranks and the degrees are preserved under $E$-closures and values for the ranks and the degrees are characterized. Criteria for totally transcendental families in terms of cardinality of $E$-closure and of the $e$-spectrum value, for a countable language, are proved.

Abstract:The Cantor measures μq,b$$\mu _{q, b}$$ with 2=q,b/q∈Z$$2 = q, b/q \in {\mathbb Z}$$ are few of known singular continuous measures that admits a spectrum. The spectra of Cantor measures μq,b$$\mu _{q, b}$$ are not unique and their structure is not well-studied. It has been observed that maximal orthogonal sets of the Cantor measure μq,b$$\mu _{q, b}$$ have tree structure and they can be built by selecting maximal tree appropriately. A challenging problem is when a maximal orthogonal set becomes a spectrum. In this paper, we introduce a measurement on the tree structure associated with a maximal orthogonal set Λ$$\Lambda $$ of the Cantor measure μq,b$$\mu _{q, b}$$, and we use boundedness and linear increment of that measurement to justify whether Λ$$\Lambda $$ is a spectrum or not. As applications of our justification, we provide a characterization for the expanding set KΛ$$K\Lambda $$ of a spectrum Λ$$\Lambda $$ to be a spectrum again. Furthermore, we construct a spectrum Λ$$\Lambda $$ such that for some integer K, the shrinking set Λ/K$$\Lambda /K$$ is a maximal orthogonal set but not a spectrum.

Abstract:In \cite{PS}, for a stably framed Liouville manifold $X$ we defined a Donaldson-Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X;\mathbb{S})$ over the sphere spectrum, and developed an obstruction theory for lifting quasi-isomorphisms from $\mathcal{F}(X;\mathbb{Z})$ to $\mathcal{F}(X;\mathbb{S})$. Here, we define a spectral Donaldson-Fukaya category for any `graded tangential pair' $\Theta \to \Phi$ of spaces living over $BO \to BU$, whose objects are Lagrangians $L\to X$ for which the classifying maps of their tangent bundles lift to $\Theta \to \Phi$. The previous case corresponded to $\Theta = \Phi = \{\mathrm{pt}\}$. We extend our obstruction theory to this setting. The flexibility to `tune' the choice of $\Theta$ and $\Phi$ increases the range of cases in which one can kill the obstructions, with applications to bordism classes of Lagrangian embeddings in the corresponding bordism theory $\Omega^{(\Theta,\Phi),\circ}_*$. We include a self-contained discussion of when (exact) spectral Floer theory over a ring spectrum $R$ should exist, which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a transchromatic phenomenon for Hill--Hopkins--Ravenel and Lubin--Tate theories. This establishes a direct relationship between the equivariant slice spectral sequences of height-$h$ and height-$(h/2)$ theories. As applications of this transchromatic phenomenon, we prove periodicity and vanishing line results for these theories.

Spectrum in alternative topological algebras and a new look at old theorems

Abstract:In this paper, we consider real and complex algebras as well as algebras over general fields. In Section 2, we revisit and prove several results on (quadratic) algebras over general fields. In Section 3, we show how to develop the spectral theory in the context of complex (resp. real) one-sided alternative topological algebras. As an application of the existence of spectrum, we prove the existence of nontrivial hyperinvariant linear manifolds for nonscalar (resp. nonquadratic) continuous linear operators acting on complex (resp. real) Fréchet spaces. Along the way, spectral theory is used to prove several topological counterparts of the well-known theorems of Frobenius, Hurwitz, Gelfand-Mazur, and Zorn. This is done, for example, in the context of left (resp. right) alternative topological algebras whose duals separate their elements. In Section 4, we consider real and complex algebras in various topological settings and reconsider and prove several results. For instance, it is shown that given a $ 1 < k \in \mathbb{N}$, on any locally complex algebra, there exists a unique nonzero vector space norm, say, $\|.\|$, satisfying the identity $\|a^k\| = \|a\|^k$ on the algebra. In Section 5, among other things, we revisit and slightly strengthen the celebrated theorems of Frobenius, Zorn, Gelfand-Mazur, and Hurwitz, and also give slight extensions of their topological counterparts, e.g., theorems of Albert, Kaplansky, and Urbanik-Wright to name a few, in several settings.

Abstract:It is well-known that the stable model structure on symmetric spectra cannot be transferred from the one on sequential spectra through the forgetful functor. We use the fibrant transfer theorem of Guetta--Moser--Sarazola--Verdugo to show it can be transferred between fibrant objects, providing a new, short and conceptual proof of its existence.

Abstract:We show that quadratic and symmetric L-theory of the integers are related by Anderson duality and show that both spectra split integrally into the L-theory of the real numbers and a generalised Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum. As a consequence, we obtain a corresponding splitting of the space G/Top. Finally, we prove analogous results for the genuine L-spectra recently devised for the study of Grothendieck--Witt theory.

Abstract:A Thom spectrum model for a $C_2$-equivariant analogue of integral Brown--Gitler spectra is established and shown to have a multiplicative property. The $C_2$-equivariant spectra constructed enjoy properties analogous to classical nonequivariant integral Brown--Gitler spectra and thus may prove useful for producing $C_2$-equivariant analogues of splittings of $BP \langle 1 \rangle \wedge BP \langle 1 \rangle$ and $bo \wedge bo.$

Abstract:We study the tensor-triangular geometry of the category of equivariant $G$-spectra for $G$ a profinite group, $\mathsf{Sp}_G$. Our starting point is the construction of a ``continuous'' model for this category, which we show agrees with all other models in the literature. We describe the Balmer spectrum of finite $G$-spectra up to the ambiguity that is present in the finite group case; in particular, we obtain a thick subcategory theorem when $G$ is abelian. By verifying the bijectivity hypothesis for $\mathsf{Sp}_G$, we prove a nilpotence theorem for all profinite groups.

Abstract:We consider general structures where formulas have truth values in the real unit interval as in continuous model theory, but whose predicates and functions need not be uniformly continuous with respect to a distance predicate. Every general structure can be expanded to a pre-metric structure by adding a distance predicate that is a uniform limit of formulas. Moreover, that distance predicate is unique up to uniform equivalence. We use this to extend the central notions in the model theory of metric structures to general structures, and show that many model-theoretic results from the literature about metric structures have natural analogues for general structures.

Abstract:Inspired by recent work <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.11227" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.11227">arXiv:2301.11227</a> on massive ambitwistor strings this paper examines the spectrum of such models using oscillator expansions. The spectrum depends heavily on the constant related to the normal ordering of the zero mode operator ${L_0}$ of the Virasoro algebra. The supergravity model is investigated in more detail, and two anomaly-free variations are presented, both with a rich spectrum and with tree scattering amplitudes that include a kinematic Parke-Taylor factor for particles other than gravitons without a need for an external current algebra. The spectrum of some of the models can also be interpreted as containing three generations of the Pati-Salam model.

Abstract:We prove that any spectrum is equivalent to the nonconnective K-theory of a stable $\infty$-category. We use these results to construct a stable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ with a bounded t-structure such that $\operatorname{K}(\mathcal{C})$ is not equivalent to $\operatorname{K}(\mathcal{C}^\heartsuit)$, disproving a conjecture of Antieau, Gepner, and Heller.

Abstract:In recent work, the authors developed a simple method of constructing topological spaces from certain well-behaved partially ordered sets -- those coming from sequences of relations between finite sets. This method associates a given poset with its spectrum, which is a compact T_1 topological space. In this paper, we focus on the case where such finite sets have a graph structure and the relations belong to a given graph category. We relate topological properties of the spectrum to combinatorial properties of the graph categories involved. We then utilise this to exhibit elementary combinatorial constructions of well-known continua as Fraïssé limits of finite graphs in categories with relational morphisms.
