We also introduce a weaker version of madness, and we strengthen the result from [HwSh:1090] by showing that no such families exist in our model.

Abstract:We study some connections between definability in generalized descriptive set theory and large cardinals, particularly measurable cardinals and limits thereof, working in ZFC. We show that if $\kappa$ is a limit of measurable cardinals then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ wellorder of a subset of $P(\kappa)$ of length $\geq\kappa^+$; this answers a question of Lücke and Müller. However, in $M_1$, the minimal proper class mouse with a Woodin cardinal, for every uncountable cardinal $\kappa$ which is not a limit of measurables, there is a $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\{\kappa\})$ good wellorder of $H_{\kappa^+}$. If $\kappa$ is a limit of measurables then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ mad family $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$, and if also $\mathrm{cof}(\kappa)>\omega$ then there is no $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\mathrm{OR})$ almost disjoint family $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$. However, relative to the consistency of large cardinals, $\Pi_1(\{\kappa\})$ mad families and maximal independent families $F\subseteq P(\kappa)$ can exist, when $\kappa$ is a limit of measurables, and even more. We also examine some of the features of $L[U]$, and answer another question of Lücke and Müller, showing that if $\kappa$ is a weakly compact cardinal such that every $\Sigma_1(H_\kappa\cup\{\kappa\})$ subset of $P(\kappa)$ of cardinality $>\kappa$ has a subset which is the range of a perfect function, then there is an inner model satisfying "there is a weakly compact limit of measurable cardinals".

Abstract:We investigate the mathematics of a model of the human mind which has been proposed by the psychologist Jens Mammen. Mathematical realizations of this model consist of so-called \emph{Mammen spaces}, where a Mammen space is a triple $(U,\mathcal S,\mathcal C)$, where $U$ is a non-empty set ("the universe"), $\mathcal S$ is a perfect Hausdorff topology on $U$, and $\mathcal C\subseteq\mathcal P(U)$ together with $\mathcal S$ satisfy certain axioms. We refute a conjecture put forward by J. Hoffmann-Jørgensen, who conjectured that the existence of a "complete" Mammen space implies the Axiom of Choice, by showing that in the first Cohen model, in which ZF holds but AC fails, there is a complete Mammen space. We obtain this by proving that in the first Cohen model, every perfect topology can be extended to a maximal perfect topology. On the other hand, we also show that if all sets are Lebesgue measurable, or all sets are Baire measurable, then there are no complete Mammen spaces with a countable universe. Finally, we investigate two new cardinal invariants $\mathfrak u_M$ and $\mathfrak u_T$ associated with complete Mammen spaces and maximal perfect topologies, and establish some basic inequalities that are provable in ZFC. We show $\mathfrak u_M=\mathfrak u_T=2^{\aleph_0}$ follows from Martin's Axiom, and, contrastingly, we show that $\aleph_1=\mathfrak u_M=\mathfrak u_T<2^{\aleph_0}=\aleph_2$ in the Baumgartner-Laver model.

Abstract:We consider the definability of mad families in vector spaces of the form $\underset{n<\omega}{\bigoplus} F$ where $F$ is a field of cardinality $\leq \aleph_0$. We show that there is no analytic mad family of subspaces when $F=\mathbb{F}_2$, partially answering a question of Smythe. Our proof relies on a variant of Mathias forcing restricted to a certain idempotent ultrafilter whose existence follows from Glazer's proof of Hindman's theorem.

Abstract:We throw some light on the question: is there a MAD family (= a family of infinite subsets of N, the intersection of any two is finite) which is completely separable (i.e. any X subseteq N is included in a finite union of members of the family or include a member of the family). We prove that it is hard to prove the consistency of the negation: (a) if 2^{aleph_0} < aleph_omega, then there is such a family (b) if there is no such families then some situation related to pcf holds whose consistency is large.

Abstract:We investigate the provability of classical combinatorial theorems in ZF. Using combinatorial arguments, we establish the following results for each infinite cardinal ${\kappa}\in On$, (1) ${\kappa}^+\to ({\kappa},{\omega}+1)$, (2) any family $\mathcal A\subset [{On}]^{<{\omega}}$ of size ${\kappa}^+$ contains a $\Delta$-system of size ${\kappa}$, (3) given a set mapping $F:{\kappa}\to {[{\kappa}]}^{<{\omega}}$, the set ${\kappa}$ has a partition into ${\omega}$-many $F$-free sets, By employing Karagila's method of absoluteness, we prove the following for each uncountable cardinal ${\kappa}\in On$, (4) given a set mapping $F:{\kappa}\to {[{\kappa}^]}^{<{\omega}}$, there is an $F$-free set of cardinality ${\kappa}$, (5) for each natural number $n$, every family $\mathcal A\subset {[{\kappa}]}^{\omega}$with $|A\cap B|\le n$ for $\{A,B\}\in {[\mathcal A]}^{2}$ has property $B$, In contrast to (5), we show that the following statement is not provable from ZF + $cf({\omega}_1)={\omega}_1$: (6*) every family $\mathcal A\subset {[{\omega}_1]}^{\omega}$ with $|A\cap B|\le 1$ for $\{A,B\}\in {[\mathcal A]}^{2}$ is "essentially disjoint" . The following statements are not provable in ZF, but they are equivalent in ZF: (i) $cf({\omega}_1)={\omega}_1$, (ii) ${\omega}_1\to ({\omega}_1,{\omega}+1)^2$, (iii) any family $\mathcal A\subset [{On}]^{<{\omega}}$ of size ${\omega}_1$ contains a $\Delta$-system of size ${\omega}_1$. A function $f$ is a "uniform denumeration on ${\omega}_1$" iff $dom(f)={\omega}_1$ and for every ${\alpha}<{\omega}_1$, $f({\alpha})$ is a function from ${\omega}$ onto ${\alpha}$. It is evident that the existence of a uniform denumeration of ${\omega}_1$ implies $cf({\omega}_1)={\omega}_1$. We prove that the failure of the reverse implication is equiconsistent with the existence of an inaccessible cardinal.

Abstract:The theory ZFC implies the scheme that for every cardinal $\delta$ we can make $\delta$ many dependent choices over any definable relation without terminal nodes. Friedman, the first author, and Kanovei constructed a model of ZFC$^-$ (ZFC without power set) with largest cardinal $\omega$ in which this principle fails for $\omega$ many choices. In this article we study failures of dependent choice principles over ZFC$^-$ by considering the notion of big proper classes. A proper class is said to be big if it surjects onto every non-zero ordinal. We shall see that if one assumes the scheme of dependent choices of any arbitrary set length then every proper class is indeed big. However, by building on work of Zarach, we provide a general framework for separating dependent choice schemes of various lengths by producing models of ZFC$^-$ with proper classes that are not big. Using a similar idea, we then extend the earlier result by producing a model of ZFC$^-$ in which there are unboundedly many cardinals but the scheme of dependent choices of length $\omega$ still fails. Finally, the second author has proven that a model of ZFC$^-$ cannot have a non-trivial, cofinal, elementary self-embedding for which the von-Neumann hierarchy exists up to its critical point. We answer a related question posed by the second author by showing that the existence of such an embedding need not imply the existence of any non-trivial fragment of the von-Neumann hierarchy. In particular, that in such a situation $\mathcal{P}(\omega)$ can be a proper class.

Abstract:Intersection models of generic extensions obtained from a commutative projection systems of notions of forcing has recently regained interest, especially in the study of descriptive set theory. Here, we show that it provides a fruitful framework that opens the door to solving some open problems concerning compactness principles of small cardinals. To exemplify, from suitable assumptions, we construct intersection models satisfying ZFC and any of the following: 1. There is a weakly compact cardinal $\kappa$ carrying an indecomposable ultrafilter, yet $\kappa$ is not measurable. This answers a question of Ketonen from the late 1970's. 2. For proper class many cardinals $\lambda$, the least $\lambda$-strongly compact cardinal is singular. This answers a question of Bagaria and Magidor who asked for merely two such cardinals. 3. There is a strongly inaccessible cardinal whose $C$-sequence number is a singular cardinal. This answers a question of Lambie-Hanson and the first author.

Abstract:In the absence of the Axiom of Choice, necessary and sufficient conditions for a locally compact Hausdorff space to have all non-empty second-countable compact Hausdorff spaces as remainders are given in $\mathbf{ZF}$. Among other independence results, the characterization of locally compact Hausdorff spaces having all non-empty metrizable compact spaces as remainders, obtained by Hatzenhuhler and Mattson in $\mathbf{ZFC}$, is proved to be independent of $\mathbf{ZF}$. Urysohn's Metrization Theorem is generalized to the following theorem: every $T_3$-space which admits a base expressible as a countable union of finite sets is metrizable. Applications to solutions of problems concerning the existence of some special metrizable compactifications in $\mathbf{ZF}$ are shown. New concepts of a strongly filterbase infinite set and a dyadically filterbase infinite set are introduced, both stemming from the investigations on compactifications. Set-theoretic and topological definitions of the new concepts are given, and their relationship with certain known notions of infinite sets is investigated in $\mathbf{ZF}$. A new permutation model is introduced in which there exists a strongly filterbase infinite set which is weakly Dedekind-finite. All $\mathbf{ZFA}$-independence results of this article are transferable to $\mathbf{ZF}$.

Abstract:In this paper we show how to build a model of $ZFC$ such that all its inner models satisfying the Axiom of Choice are well-ordered with respect to inclusion, and that said ordering is of arbitrary height (including possibly $Ord$ high). We do this by iterating $\kappa$-Sacks forcing for ever-increasing $\kappa$, while showing that such forcings do not add any unexpected intermediate inner models.

Abstract:While maximal independent families can be constructed from ZFC via Zorn's lemma, the presence of a maximal $\sigma$-independent family already gives an inner model with a measurable cardinal, and Kunen has shown that from a measurable cardinal one can construct a forcing extension in which there is a maximal $\sigma$-independent family. We extend this technique to construct proper classes of maximal $\theta$-independent families for various uncountable $\theta$. In the first instance, a single $\theta^+$-strongly compact cardinal has a set-generic extension with a proper class of maximal $\theta$-independent families. In the second, we take a class-generic extension of a model with a proper class of measurable cardinals to obtain a proper class of $\theta$ for which there is a maximal $\theta$-independent family.

Abstract:Journal of Mathematical Logic, Ahead of Print. According to a theorem due to Kenneth Kunen, under ZFC, there is no ordinal [math] and nontrivial elementary embedding [math]. His proof relied on the Axiom of Choice (AC), and no proof from ZF alone is has been discovered. [math] is the assertion, introduced by Hugh Woodin, that [math] is an ordinal and there is an elementary embedding [math] with critical point [math]. And [math] asserts that [math] holds for some [math]. The axiom [math] is one of the strongest large cardinals not known to be inconsistent with AC. It is usually studied assuming ZFC in the full universe [math] (in which case [math] must be a limit ordinal), but we assume only ZF. We prove, assuming ZF [math] [math] [math] "[math] is an even ordinal", that there is a proper class transitive inner model [math] containing [math] and satisfying ZF [math] [math] [math] "there is an elementary embedding [math]"; in fact we will have [math] ⊆[math], where [math] witnesses [math] in [math]. This result was first proved by the author under the added assumption that [math] exists; Gabe Goldberg noticed that this extra assumption was unnecessary. If also [math] is a limit ordinal and [math]-DC holds in [math], then the model [math] will also satisfy [math]-DC. We show that ZFC [math] "[math] is even" [math] [math] implies [math] exists for every [math], but if consistent, this theory does not imply [math] exists.

Abstract:We show that, consistently, every MAD family has cardinality strictly bigger than the dominating number, that is a > d, thus solving one of the oldest problems on cardinal invariants of the continuum. The method is a contribution to the theory of iterated forcing for making the continuum large.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of almost disjoint families which we call fin-intersecting almost disjoint families. They are related to almost disjoint families whose Vietoris Hyperspace of their Isbell-Mrówka spaces are pseudocompact. We show that under $\mathfrak p=\mathfrak c$ fin-intersecting MAD families exist generically and they also exist if $\mathfrak{a<s}$, but that there are also non fin-intersecting MAD families in ZFC. We also show that under CH, there exists fin intersecting MAD families which remain like that after adding an arbitrary quantity of Cohen reals and Random reals. These results give more models in which pseudocompact MAD families exist.
