Abstract:This paper mainly studied the influence of the Si/Al ratio on the performance of the Cu/SSZ-13 catalyst synthesized by the ion exchange method. NH3-SCR experimental results show that the catalyst SAR10 has the best catalytic performance, and it can maintain a 100% conversion rate in the range of 250 degrees C to 600 degrees C. Although SAR6 samples with low Si/Al ratios have abundant active centers, their low temperature activity is poor due to their poor crystallinity. The decrease of the number of active sites available for exchange in the SAR25 sample with too high an Si/Al ratio results in a decrease in catalytic activity throughout the temperature range. The results of the in situ DRIFTS experiment show that the order of the number of Lewis acid sites and the content of monodentate nitrate adsorption sites is the same as the order of catalytic activity.

Abstract:AbstractThe Cu/SSZ-13 catalyst with Si/Al ratio of 10 and Cu/Al ratio in the range of 0.005 to 0.5 was synthesized by ion exchange method. The effect of Cu/Al ratio on the performance, selectivity, and active center of the catalyst SCR was studied. The samples with too low Cu/Al ratio have low catalytic activity in the entire temperature range due to the small number of active sites. The samples with too high Cu/Al ratio have good performance in the low temperature range due to the large number of active sites. However, a large amount of copper that has not undergone ion exchange will generate CuO, which greatly enhances the oxidation of NH3 at high temperatures, which in turn leads to a decrease in catalytic performance at high temperatures. XRD and BET experiments show that all catalyst samples have good CHA crystal structure and microporous structure, and the pore size is mostly about 2 nm. In situ DRIFTS analysis shows that when the Cu/Al ratio is low, the proportion of Z2Cu in the active sites is higher, and the stability of the catalyst is enhanced. When the copper–aluminum ratio is high, the proportion of ZCuOH increases, and the low-temperature activity of the catalyst is higher.

Abstract:Effects Si/Al ratio on catalytic performance for NH3-SCR of one-pot synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts are investigated. Catalysts are characterized using various analytical techniques, including H2-TPR, XRD and XRD Rietveld. The result demonstrated that Si/Al ratio had an important impact on content and distribution of active copper species. The best catalyst with Si/Al molar ratio of 10 showed excellent activity and stability. It had the widest temperature window for NH3-SCR.

Study on the Performance of the Zr-Modified Cu-SSZ-13 Catalyst for Low-Temperature NH3-SCR

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 and Zr-modified Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with different Zr/Cu mass ratios were prepared by ion-exchange and impregnation methods, respectively. The NH3-SCR performance tests were performed using the catalyst performance evaluation device to investigate the effects of different Zr/Cu mass ratios on the catalyst ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) performance. X-ray diffraction, ICP-OES, BET, NH3 temperature-programed desorption (NH3-TPD), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) were used to characterize the catalysts. The results show that the prepared Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst had good catalytic activity. Zr introduction was carried out on this basis. The results showed that proper Zr doping improved the catalytic activity at low temperatures and widened the high-temperature stage, with an optimal activity stage at a Zr/Cu mass ratio of 0.2. The NO x conversion efficiency was close to 100% at 200 °C and over 80% at 450 °C. The active species were well dispersed on the catalyst surface, and the metal modification did not change the crystal structure of the zeolite. The NH3-TPD results showed that the Zr-modified catalyst had more abundant acid sites, and the H2-TPR results indicated that the Cu species on the catalyst had excellent reducibility at low temperatures. The interaction between Cu and Zr could regulate the Cu+ and Cu2+ proportion on the catalyst surface, which facilitated the increase in the Cu+ for fast SCR reaction at low temperatures. With abundant acid sites and both SCR reactions following the Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism on the catalyst surface at a low temperature of 150 °C, more abundant acid sites and reaction paths created favorable conditions for NH3-SCR reactions at low temperatures.

Abstract:The effect of Mn impregnation on the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3) activity of in situ synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 was investigated in this work. It was found that Mn addition could efficiently improve the low-temperature activity of Cu-SSZ-13. The optimal amount of Mn was 5 wt.%, and NOx conversion was improved by more than 20% over a temperature range of 120 °C to 150 °C. SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-TPR (temperature programmed reduction of H2), NH3-TPD (temperature programmed desorption of NH3) and in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) experiments were conducted to investigate the changes in the zeolite structure, active sites, acid sites and reaction mechanism. The impregnated MnOx species caused a decline in the crystallinity of Cu-SSZ-13 but markedly improved the redox ability. Nitrate and nitrite species were observed in the Mn-modified Cu-SSZ-13, and the formation of these species was thought to cause the observed increase in low-temperature NH3-SCR activity. The results show that the addition of Mn is a promising method for promoting the low-temperature catalytic activity of Cu-SSZ-13.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 has been evidenced to perform well during low temperature range while Fe-SSZ-13 exhibits high NOx conversion at relative high temperatures in standard selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3. Considering the respective advantages of Cu and Fe species, we attempt to combine these two elements to overcome single metal deficiency and to construct a more efficient catalyst for NH3-SCR over a broader temperature window. A series of Fe-Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts were prepared by ion exchange method on the basis of one-pot synthesized CuSSZ-13. The influence of concentrations of Fe(NO3)3 and exchanging time was considered in the preparing process, and the obtained catalysts were applied to test activity under standard SCR reaction. The superior performance with a moderate Fe/Cu ratio of 1.29 could be attributed to the co-effect of multiple active species, namely Cu(OH)+ and Fe(OH)2+ as well as oligomeric iron. The dominant Cu(OH)+ species in Fe-Cu-SSZ-13-1.29 may account for the excellent low temperature (< 200 oC) performance, while isolated Cu2+ and abundance of Fe ion monomers/oligomer species may be active at higher temperatures. Larger Fe2O3 particles descend the NOx elimination either by blocking the pores in zeolites or increasing the NH3 oxidation ability at high temperature. In-situ DRIFTS studies showed several important intermediates (ad-NO2, NO+, NO3- , NO2- , Cu(Fe)-NH3, NH4NO3), and both nitrite and nitrate route are proposed to be the standard SCR reaction mechanism at low temperatures.

Abstract:The catalytic performances and mechanism differences of model catalysts Cu–SSZ-13 and Fe–SSZ-13 with similar metal content and Si/Al ratio were compared. In the NH3-SCR reaction, Cu–SSZ-13 had a good NO conversion at low temperature, broad active temperature windows and better hydrothermal stability. Fe–SSZ-13 showed better high-temperature NO conversion rate and better resistance to sulfur poisoning, but poorer low-temperature NH3-SCR activity. NH3-TPD verified the content difference of L-NH3 and B-NH3 of Cu- and Fe–SSZ-13. UV–Vis DRS, EPR, H2-TPR indicated the active species of Cu- and Fe–SSZ-13. Results showed that Cu–SSZ-13 only had one type active species of Cu2+, Fe–SSZ-13 had Fe3+ species that acted as active centers at low temperature and reactivity oligomeric Fe species at high temperature. The diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform spectrum (DRIFTS) results showed that the reactions of Cu–SSZ-13 and Fe–SSZ-13 at low temperature both followed the Eley–Rideal (E–R) mechanism and the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) mechanism. Cu–SSZ-13 could perform the catalytic process well under both mechanisms, but when Fe–SSZ-13 followed the E–R mechanism, there were many B-NH3 species, which was not conducive to the reaction. When following the L–H mechanism, the speed of NO3− participating in the reaction was slow due to ammonia inhibition, resulting in poor low-temperature activity.

The coal fly ash-derived zeolite acted as a raw material rather than the chemical silicon and aluminum source. A series of catalysts were prepared using the in-situ IZT method with different ratios of the two template agents. The NO conversion of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts was above 90% within the temperature range of 200-700 °C, whereas the N2 selectivity was maintained at about 100%. The as-synthesized catalysts had higher conversion rates for Si and Al, higher copper loading and more isolated Cu2+. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction mechanisms of Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst prepared using the in-situ IZT method followed both the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism, though it was mainly based on the E-R reaction. In this study, the Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts were synthesized using coal fly ash based zeolite in one step. This study further improved the synthesis process route from coal based solid waste to SCR catalyst, shortened the preparation cycle, and improved catalyst performance.

Abstract:This study focuses on investigating the influence of ion-exchange method (ION-F and ION-A) and one-pot method (ONE-F and ONE-A) on catalytic properties and hydrothermal stability of Cu/SSZ-13. It was found that ONE-F catalyst showed better SCR activity, especially at low temperature range below 400 degrees C. After hydrothermal aging, ION-A exhibited higher low temperature efficiency than ONE-A. The effect of synthesis method on the physicochemical structure, acidity intensity, and Cu species migration or transformation of the fresh and aged Cu/SSZ-13 catalysts were comprehensively characterized by NH3-TPO, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD, ICP, XRF, BET, XRD, SEM, and TEM. ONE-F has more isolated Cu2(+) sites, higher ratio of active sites Cu2+-2ZACu(OH)](+)-Z, more Lewis acid sites, and smaller particle size than ION-F. However, hydrothermal aging had severe effect on Cu/SSZ-13 prepared by one-pot method, leading to particle aggregation and decrease of active copper sites. According to NH3-SCR kinetic studies, smaller particle size and more uniformly distributed active sites over ONE-F resulted in less effect of pore diffusion limitation. Furthermore, in situ DRIFTS results indicated that more monodentate nitrates adsorbed sites and Lewis acid sites existed in ONE-F. On the other hand, monodentate nitrates were identified to be the most active nitrate species, and Lewis acid sites were ascertained to be more active than Bronsted acid sites. Therefore, ONE-F showed more excellent SCR performance than ION-F. However, hydrothermal aging resulted in loss of majority of nitrate adsorbed sites and acid sites over catalyst prepared by one-pot method, leading to lower SCR performance. In conclusion, Cu/SSZ-13 prepared by ion-exchange method has higher hydrothermal stability, however, fresh Cu/SSZ-13 prepared by one-pot method has excellent catalytic properties.

Abstract:The Cu‐SSZ‐13 catalysts with different copper content are prepared by one‐pot method and changing the mole ratio of Cu‐tetraethylenepentamine/Al2O3. Cu‐SSZ‐13 catalyst with 3.25 wt.% Cu exhibits excellent catalytic activity (operation temperature window of 145–490 °C), adaptability to high GHSV (gas hourly space velocity) and hydrothermal stability in NH3‐SCR reaction. The results of XRD Rietveld refinement coupled with H2‐TPR and EPR show that three active Cu2+ species (Cu1, Cu2 and Cu3) locate in various sites in the CHA (chabazite) structure and play different action in NH3‐SCR reaction. Cu1 species situated close to an eight‐membered‐ring play a crucial role in the low temperature activity for its optimum reduction ability. While Cu3 species located in the center of the hexagonal prism are the most stable and its content basically remains unchanged after SO2 pretreatment, which contributes to the excellent SO2 resistance.
Redistributing Cu species in Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite as NH3-SCR catalyst via a simple ion-exchange

Abstract:The nature and distribution of Cu species in Cu-SSZ-13 play a vital role in selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR), but existing methods for adjusting the Cu distribution are complex and difficult to control. Herein, we report a simple and effective ion-exchange approach to regulate the Cu distribution in the one-pot synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 that possesses sufficient initial Cu species and thus provides a “natural environment” for adjusting Cu distribution precisely. By using this proposed strategy, a series of Cu-SSZ-13 x zeolites with different Cu contents and distributions were obtained. It is shown that the dealumination of the as-synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 during the ion-exchange generates abundant vacant sites in the double six-membered-rings of the SSZ-13 zeolite for relocating Cu2+ species and thus allows the redistribution of the Cu species. The catalytic results showed that the ion-exchanged Cu-SSZ-13 zeolites exhibit quite different catalytic performance in NH3-SCR reaction but superior to the parent counterpart. The structure–activity relationship analysis indicates that the redistribution of Cu species rather than other factors (e.g., crystallinity, chemical composition, and porous structure) is responsible for the improved NH3-SCR performance and SO2 and H2O resistance. Our work offers an effective method to precisely adjust the Cu distribution in preparing the industrial SCR catalysts.

Abstract:Different Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts are prepared by one-pot synthesis by changing the crystallization time during the reaction and characterized using various analytical techniques, including H-2-temperature program reduction (H-2-TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result demonstrated that the crystallization time had an important impact on the content and distribution of active copper species. The catalysts with proper crystallization time showed excellent activity and hydrothermal stability for the NH3 selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) reaction and the best crystallization time was about 4 d. In the zeolite, the unstable Cu-A(2+) species may be converted to stable Cu-B(2+) species and the Cu2+ species agglomerated together under high-temperature hydrothermal conditions. In conclusion, the collapse of the zeolite structure and the agglomeration of active Cu2+ species were the main reason for the deterioration of the hydrothermal stability.
Insight into solid-state ion-exchanged Cu-based zeolite (SSZ-13, SAPO-18, and SAPO-34) catalysts for the NH3-SCR reaction: The promoting role of NH4-form zeolite substrates

Abstract:In this paper, Cu-exchanged SSZ-13, SAPO-18, and SAPO-34 were synthesized via a novel green and sustainable solid-state ion-exchange (SSIE) route with excellent NH3-SCR activities, which could simplify the preparation process and reduce the wastewater production in comparison to conventional aqueous ion-exchange route. The results also proved that Cu-exchanged zeolites synthesized by SSIE technology presented higher Cu ion-exchange (IE) levels and better SCR activities than those prepared via the traditional incipient impregnation route. In the case of SSIE, the usage of NH4-form substrates could achieve more Cu2+ ions and fewer CuOx than those H-form substrates since the formation of Cu(NH3)x2+ intermediate could promote the Cu2+ mobility to facilitate Cu2+ occupying IE sites, which was favorable for the SCR reaction. The combined DFT data confirmed the SSIE reaction energy barriers between Cu(NO3)2 and the NH4-form substrates were almost identical, whereas the higher reaction energy was required for H-form substrates. In-situ DRIFTS results manifested the labile species like NH4+, –NH2, NO2–, NO3–, NO2, etc were the reaction intermediates over the catalysts prepared from NH4-form substrates. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood ("L-H") and Eley-Rideal ("E-R") mechanisms contributed collectively over both Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-18 in the SCR reaction, however, the "L-H" mechanism dominated over Cu-SAPO-34.

Abstract:To improve the alkali metal resistance of commercial catalyst Cu/SSZ-13 for ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) reaction, a simple method to synthesize Cu/SSZ-13 with a core–shell like structure was developed. Compared with smaller-sized counterparts, Cu/SSZ-13 with a crystal size of 2.3 μm exhibited excellent resistance to Na poisoning. To reveal the influence of the crystal size on Cu/SSZ-13, physical structure characterization (XRD, BET, SEM, NMR) and chemical acidic distribution (H2-TPR, UV-Vis, Diethylamine-TPD, pyridine-DRIFTs, EDS) were investigated. It was found that the larger the crystal size of the molecular sieve, the more Cu is distributed in the crystal core, and the less likely it was to be replaced by Na to generate CuO. Therefore, a 2.3 μm sized Cu/SSZ-13 well-controlled the reactivity of the side reaction NH3 oxidation and the generation of N2O. The result was helpful to guide the extension of the service life of Cu/SSZ-13.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 represents one of the most promising catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia (NH3-SCR), but it has remained challenging to gain superior low-temperature activity and hydrothermal stability for meeting the stringent emission regulations. Here, Cu/Y-x-SSZ-13 have been prepared by in situ doping of Y and subsequent ion-exchanging with Cu ions. The combined analysis of various energy spectra techniques unveils that Y ions are mainly located in the six-membered rings (6MRs) of chabazite framework and have a strong interaction with Cu cations in 8MRs, resulting in the remarkable low-temperature NOx abatement efficiency and hydrothermal stability. Mechanism studies reveal that the interplay between Y and Cu not only enhances the electron transfer from Cu to Y ions that favors the ammonia solvation process and reduces the reaction barrier, but also inhibits the aggregation of Cu sites. This work paves the way for next generation of advanced NH3-SCR catalysts.
