Abstract:Submerged gravel bed scrubbers (SGBSs) are used as air cleaning systems for removing combustion aerosols from carrier air, under the accidental event of sodium fire. In-house experimental investigations show that semiempirical models used till date underpredict sodium fire aerosol removal efficiencies at low air flow rates. This brings in the requirement for advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to capture SGBS efficiency. The model has been validated using experimental data available in literature. Parametric studies carried out show that increasing the bed height from 50 mm to 150 mm increases the scrubbing efficiency of 5 μm aerosols by 5.5% and 4.2% in nonsubmerged and submerged cases respectively at an inlet concentration of 0.073 wt% and air flow rate of 1.87 × 10−6 kg/s. The study will be useful for improving the aerosol removal in air cleaning systems related to sodium-cooled fast reactors.
