Abstract:We discuss the recent result by Xiang Chen (Int. J. Mod. Phys. 27(14) 1350066 (2013)) and show that the formula obtained for the Casimir torque in the systems of two isotropic rotating particles (plates) is incorrect.

Abstract:The Casimir effect for parallel plates within the frame of the five-dimensional Randall-Sundrum model with two branes is re-examined. We argue that the nature of Casimir force is repulsive if the distance between the plates is not extremely tiny, which is not consistent with the experimental phenomena, meaning that the Randall-Sundrum I model can not be acceptable. We also point out that the estimation of the separation between the two branes, by means of Casimir effect for two-parallel-plate system, is not feasible, in contrast to another recent study.

Abstract:We have reviewed the Comment of Geyer et al. [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0708.1548" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0708.1548">arXiv:0708.1548</a>] concerning our recent work [Phys. Rev. A 75, 060102 (R) (2007)], and while we disagree with their criticisms, we acknowledge them for giving us the opportunity to add interesting addition material and a more detailed description of our experiment. We describe further our calculation and explain why a more sophisticated model is not warranted. We also present detailed experiments on the effects of electrostatic forces in our measurements and show that the contribution due to work function differences is small and that the residual electrostatic force is dominated by trapped charges and external fields. Finally, we estimate the effect of double layer interactions. These additional calculations and measurements support our original conclusion that the experimental results are consistent with the Lifshitz theory.

Abstract:We proceed with the study of the Casimir force for parallel plates at finite temperature in the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. We find that the HL exponent can not be chosen as an integer, or the Casimir energy will be a constant and further the Casimir force between two parallel plates will vanish. The higher temperature makes the attractive Casimir force weaker, which is consistent with the original consequence confirmed theoretically and experimentally. We can select the HL factor adequately to lead the thermally revised Casimir force to be similar to the standard results for the parallel plates.

Abstract:We investigate the implications of a fundamental length scale on the centripetal force on a rotating Casimir apparatus in $\kappa$-space-time. We model the Casimir apparatus rotating with constant angular speed using appropriate $\kappa$-deformed coordinates. We find the $\kappa$-deformed centripetal force on a single plate, as well as for parallel plates. We show that the Casimir energy, including the divergent part (self energies of the plates) experiences centripetal forces like a conventional mass. We also find centripetal force on oriented parallel plates rotating with constant angular speed in $\kappa$-space-time. Results show that the mass-energy equivalence principle holds in the $\kappa$-space-time.

Abstract:We examine recent prescriptions for estimating the thermal Casimir force between two metallic plates from the point of view of their consistency with the Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem of classical statistical physics. We find that prescriptions including the effect of ohmic dissipation satisfy the theorem, while prescriptions that neglect ohmic dissipation do not.

Abstract:In this paper, the Casimir effect for parallel plates in the presence of one compactified universal extra dimension is re-examined in detail. Having regularized the expressions of Casimir force, we show that the nature of Casimir force is repulsive if the distance between the plates is large enough, which does not agree with the experimental phenomena.

Abstract:The Casimir effect for parallel plates satisfying the Dirichlet boundary condition in the context of effective QED coming from a six-dimensional Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution of the Abelian Higgs model with fermions coupled to gravity is studied at finite temperature. We find that the sign of the Casimir energy remains negative under the thermal influence. It is also shown that the Casimir force between plates will be weaker in the higher-temperature surroundings while keeps attractive. This Casimir effect involving the thermal influence is still inconsistent with the known experiments. We find that the thermal correction can not compensate or even reduce the modification from this kind of vortex model to make the Casimir force to be in less conflict with the measurements.
Casimir Effect for Parallel Plates Involving Massless Majorana Fermions at Finite Temperature

Abstract:We study the Casimir effect for parallel plates with massless Majorana fermions obeying the bag boundary conditions at finite temperature. The thermal influence will modify the effect. It is found that the sign of the Casimir energy keeps negative if the product of plate distance and the temperature is larger than a special value or the energy will change to be positive. The Casimir energy rises with the stronger thermal influence. We show that the attractive Casimir force between two parallel plates becomes greater with the increasing temperature. In the case of piston system involving the same Majorana fermions with the same boundary conditions, the attractive force on the piston will weaker in the hotter surrounding.

Abstract:In this paper I investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the Casimir effect due to a massless and charged fermion field that violates Lorentz invariance according to the Horava-Lifshitz theory. I focus on the case of a fermion field that obeys MIT bag boundary conditions on a pair of parallel plates. I carry out this investigation using the $\zeta$-function technique that allows me to obtain Casimir energy and pressure in the presence of a uniform magnetic field orthogonal to the plates. I investigate the cases of the parameter associated with the violation of Lorentz invariance being even or odd and the cases of weak and strong magnetic field, examining all possible combinations of the above quantities. In all cases I obtain simple and very accurate analytic expressions of the magnetic field dependent Casimir energy and pressure.

Abstract:The zero-temperature Casimir-Lifshitz force between two plates moving parallel to each other at arbitrary constant speed was found in [New J. Phys. 11, 033035 (2009)]. The solution is here generalized to the case where the plates are at different temperatures. The Casimir-Lifshitz force is obtained by calculating the electromagnetic stress tensor, using the method employed by Antezza et al. [Phys. Rev. A 77, 022901 (2008)] for non-moving plates at different temperatures. The perpendicular force on the plates has contributions from the quantum vacuum and from the thermal radiation; both of these contributions are influenced by the motion. In addition to the perpendicular force, thermal radiation from the moving plates gives rise to a lateral component of the Casimir-Lifshitz force, an effect with no quantum-vacuum contribution. The zero-temperature results are reproduced, in particular the non-existence of a quantum-vacuum friction between the plates.

Abstract:We study the finite temperature Casimir effect on a pair of parallel perfectly conducting plates in Randall-Sundrum model without using the scalar field analogy. Two different ways of interpreting perfectly conducting conditions are discussed. The conventional way that uses perfectly conducting condition induced from 5D leads to three discrete mode corrections. This is very different from the result obtained from imposing 4D perfectly conducting conditions on the 4D massless and massive vector fields obtained by decomposing the 5D electromagnetic field. The latter only contains two discrete mode corrections, but it has a continuum mode correction that depends on the thicknesses of the plates. It is shown that under both boundary conditions, the corrections to the Casimir force make the Casimir force more attractive. The correction under the 4D perfectly conducting condition is always smaller than the correction under the 5D induced perfectly conducting condition. These statements are true at any temperature.

Abstract:In this note, we reply to the comment made by <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://E.I.Kats" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://V.V.Lebedev" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1407.4298" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1407.4298">arXiv:1407.4298</a>] on our recent work "Thermodynamics of quantum crystalline membranes" [Phys. Rev. B 89, 224307 (2014)]. Kats and Lebedev question the validity of the calculation presented in our work, in particular on the use of a Debye momentum as a ultra-violet regulator for the theory. We address and counter argue the criticisms made by Kats and Lebedev to our work.

Abstract:In response to the comment by Zhu and Berakdar (arXiv:1207.3457) that the physical system considered by them in their previous work [Ding et al., PRB 84, 115433 (2011)] is conceptually different from ours in the appendix of our latest paper [Zhou and Wu, arXiv:1206.3435], we show why they are relevant and further point out conceptually the problems in their work.
